The influence of polymer grafting on the phase behavior and elastic properties of two tail lipid bilayers have been investigated using dissipative particle dynamics simulations. For the range of polymer lengths studied, the L(c) to L(alpha) transition temperature is not significantly affected for grafting fractions, G(f) between 0.16 and 0.25. A decrease in the transition temperature is observed at a relatively high grafting fraction, G(f) = 0.36. At low temperatures, a small increase in the area per head group, a(h), at high G(f) leads to an increase in the chain tilt, inducing order in the bilayer and the solvent. The onset of the phase transition occurs with the nucleation of small patches of thinned membrane which grow and form continuous domains as the temperature increases. This region is the co-existence region between the L(beta)(thick) and the L(alpha)(thin) phases. The simulation results for the membrane area expansion as a function of the grafting density conform extremely well to the scalings predicted by self-consistent mean field theories. We find that the bending modulus shows a small decrease for short polymers (number of beads, N(p) = 10) and low G(f), where the influence of polymer is reduced when compared to the effect of the increased a(h). For longer polymers (N(p) > 15), the bending modulus increases monotonically with increase in grafted polymer. Using the results from mean field theory, we partition the contributions to the bending modulus from the membrane and the polymer and show that the dominant contribution to the increased bending modulus arises from the grafted polymer. A solid oxide galvanic cell and a gas-solid (View the MathML source) equilibration technique have been used to measure the activities of the solutes in the α-solid solutions of silver with indium and tin. The results are consistent with the information now available for the corresponding liquid alloys, the phase diagram and the heats of mixing of the solid alloy. When the results of this study are taken together with published data for the α-solid solutions in Ag + Cd system, it is found that the variation of the excess partial free energy of the solute with mole fraction can be correlated to the electron/atom ratio. The significant thennodynamic parameter that explains the Hume-Rothery findings in these alloys appears to be the rate of change of the excess partial free energy with composition near the phase boundary, and this in turn reflects the value of the solute-solute interaction energy.

Ferroelectric superlattice structures consisting of alternating layers of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 with variable interlayer thickness were grown on Pt (111)/TiO2/SiO2/Si (100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The presence of superlattice reflections in the x-ray diffraction pattern clearly showed the superlattice behavior of the fabricated structures over a range of 6.4–20 nm individual layer thicknesses. Depth profile conducted by secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis showed a periodic concentration of Ba and Sr throughout the film. Polarization hysteresis and the capacitance-voltage characteristics of these films show clear size dependent ferroelectric characteristics. The spontaneous (Ps) and remnant (Pr) polarizations increase gradually with decreasing periodicity, reach a maximum at a finite thickness and then decrease. The competition between the size effect and long-range ferroelectric interaction is suggested as a possible reason for this phenomenon. The temperature dependence of Ps and Pr shows a single ferroelectric phase transition, and the Curie temperature is estimated to be about 316 K. The curve shows that the ferroelectric superlattice tends to form an artificial material, responding as a single structure with an averaged behavior of both the parent systems.

Thin films of ZrO2 have been deposited by ALD on Si(100) and SIMOX using two different metalorganic complexes of Zr as precursors. These films are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopies, infrared spectroscopy, and electrical measurements. These show that amorphous ZrO2 films of high dielectric quality may be grown on Si(100) starting about 400degreesC. As the growth temperature is raised, the films become crystalline, the phase formed and the microstructure depending on precursor molecular structure. The phase of ZrO2 formed depends also on the relative duration of the precursor and oxygen pulses. XPS and IR spectroscopy show that films grown at low temperatures contain chemically unbound carbon, its extent depending on the precursor. C-V measurements show that films grown on Si(100) have low interface state density, low leakage current, a hysteresis width of only 10-250 mV and a dielectric constant of similar to16-25.

Surfactant protein A (SP-A), which is a lung innate immune system component, is known to bind glycolipids present at the cell surface of a mycobacterial pathogen. Lipoarabinomannan (LAM), a component of mycobacterial thick, waxy cell wall, is one of the glycolipid ligands for SP-A. In order to assess binding of synthetic glycolipids with SP-A and the glycosidic linkage preferences for the interaction, beta-arabinofuranoside trisaccharide glycolipids constituted with beta-(1 -> 2), beta-(1 -> 3) and beta-(1 -> 2), beta-(1 -> 5) linkages relevant to LAM were synthesized through chemical glycosylations. The efficacies of synthetic glycolipids to interact with SP-A were assessed by using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique, from which association-dissociation rate constants and equilibrium binding constants were derived. The equilibrium binding constants of the interaction of two constitutionally varying beta-arabinofuranoside glycolipids with SP-A were found to be in the millimolar range. A comparison of the results with few alpha-anomeric arabinofuranoside glycolipids showed that glycolipids with beta-anomeric linkages were having relatively lower equilibrium binding constants than those with alpha-anomeric linkages in binding to the protein, whereas oligosaccharides alone, without lipidic chains, exhibited higher equilibrium binding constants. Further, the synthetic compounds inhibited the growth of mycobacteria and affected sliding motilities of the bacteria, although to an extent relatively lesser than that of synthetic compounds constituted with alpha-anomeric linkages.

Deleterious topological-closed-packed (tcp) phases grow in the interdiffusion zone in turbine blades mainly because of the addition of refractory elements such as Mo and W in the Ni- and Co-based superalloys. CoNi/Mo and CoNi/W diffusion couples are prepared to understand the growth mechanism of the phases in the interdiffusion zone. Instead of determining the main and cross-interdiffusion coefficients following the conventional method, we preferred to determine the average effective interdiffusion coefficients of two elements after fixing the composition of one element more or less the same in the interdiffusion zone. These parameters can be directly related to the growth kinetics of the phases and shed light on the atomic mechanism of diffusion. In both systems, the diffusion rate of elements and the phase layer thickness increased because of the addition of Ni in the solid solution phase, probably because of an increase in driving force. On the other hand, the growth rate of the mu phase and the diffusion coefficient of the species decreased because of the addition of Ni. This indicates the change in defect concentration, which assists diffusion. Further, we revisited the previously published Co-Ni-Mo and Co-Ni-W ternary phase diagrams and compared them with the composition range of the phases developed in the interdiffusion zone. Different composition ranges of the tcp phases are found, and corrected phase diagrams are shown. The outcome of this study will help to optimize the concentration of elements in superalloys to control the growth of the tcp phases.

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) of acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, and acrylamide (AM), crosslinked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization. The equilibrium swelling capacities of the SAPs were determined and these decreased with increasing AM content. The adsorption of the two cationic dyes, methylene blue and rhodamine 6G, on the dry as well as equilibrium swollen SAPs was investigated. The amount of the dye adsorbed at equilibrium per unit weight of the SAPs and the rate constants of adsorption were determined. The amount of the dye adsorbed at equilibrium by the SAPs decreased with increasing mol % of AM in the SAPs. The amount of the dye adsorbed at equilibrium was almost equal for the dry and equilibrium swollen SAPs. However, the equilibrium swollen SAPs adsorbed dyes at a higher rate than the dry SAPs. The higher rate of adsorption was attributed to the availability of all the anionic groups present in the fully elongated conformation of the SAPs in the equilibrium swollen state. The effect of initial dye concentration on the adsorption was also investigated and the adsorption was described by Langmuir adsorption isotherms. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate the phase fluctuation introduced by oscillation of scattering centers in the focal volume of an ultrasound transducer in an optical tomography experiment has a nonzero mean. The conditions to be met for the above are: (i) the frequency of the ultrasound should be in the vicinity of the most dominant natural frequency of vibration of the ultrasound focal volume, (ii) the corresponding acoustic wavelength should be much larger than l(n)*, a modified transport mean-free-path applicable for phase decorrelation and (iii) the focal volume of the ultrasound transducer should not be larger than 4 - 5 times (l(n)*)(3). We demonstrate through simulations that as the ratio of the ultrasound focal volume to (l(n)*)(3) increases, the average of the phase fluctuation decreases and becomes zero when the focal volume becomes greater than around 4(l(n)*)(3); and through simulations and experiments that as the acoustic frequency increases from 100 Hz to 1 MHz, the average phase decreases to zero. Through experiments done in chicken breast we show that the average phase increases from around 110 degrees to 130 degrees when the background medium is changed from water to glycerol, indicating that the average of the phase fluctuation can be used to sense changes in refractive index deep within tissue.

This study proposes an inverter circuit topology capable of generating multilevel dodecagonal (12-sided polygon) voltage space vectors by the cascaded connection of two-level and three-level inverters. By the proper selection of DC-link voltages and resultant switching states for the inverters, voltage space vectors whose tips lie on three concentric dodecagons, are obtained. A rectifier circuit for the inverter is also proposed, which significantly improves the power factor. The topology offers advantages such as the complete elimination of the fifth and seventh harmonics in phase voltages and an extension of the linear modulation range. In this study, a simple method for the calculation of pulse width modulation timing was presented along with extensive simulation and experimental results in order to validate the proposed concept.

The basic framework and - conceptual understanding of the metallurgy of Ti alloys is strong and this has enabled the use of titanium and its alloys in safety-critical structures such as those in aircraft and aircraft engines. Nevertheless, a focus on cost-effectiveness and the compression of product development time by effectively integrating design with manufacturing in these applications, as well as those emerging in bioengineering, has driven research in recent decades towards a greater predictive capability through the use of computational materials engineering tools. Therefore this paper focuses on the complexity and variety of fundamental phenomena in this material system with a focus on phase transformations and mechanical behaviour in order to delineate the challenges that lie ahead in achieving these goals. The present study is focussed at establishing an appropriate electrolyte system for developing electrochemically stable and fluorine (F) containing titania (F-TiO2) films on Cp Ti by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. To fabricate the F-TiO2 films on Cp Ti, different electrolyte solutions of chosen concentrations of tri-sodium orthophosphate (TSOP, Na3PO4 center dot I2H2O), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and various F-containing compounds such as ammonium fluoride (NH4F), potassium fluoride (KF), sodium fluoride (NaF) and potassium fluorotitanate (K2TiF6) are employed. The structural and morphological characteristics, thickness and elemental composition of the developed films have been assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The in-vitro electrochemical corrosion behavior of the films was studied under Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) environment by potentiodynamic polarization, long term potential measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. The XRD and SEM-EDS results show that the rutile content in the films vary in the range of 15-37 wt% and the F and P contents in the films is found to be in the range of 2-3 at% and 2.9-4.7 at% respectively, suggesting that the anatase to rutile phase transformation and the incorporation of F and P into the films are significantly controlled by the respective electrolyte solution. The SEM elemental mapping results show that the electrolyte borne F and P elements are incorporated and distributed uniformly in all the films. Among all the films under study, the film developed with 5 g TSOP+2 g KOH+3 g K2TiF6 electrolyte system exhibits considerably improved in-vitro corrosion resistance and therefore best suited for biomedical applications. We study here different regions in phase diagrams of the spin-1/2, spin-1 and spin-3/2 one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg systems with frustration (next-nearest-neighbor interaction J(2)) and dimerization (delta). In particular, we analyze the behaviors of the bipartite entanglement entropy and fidelity at the gapless to gapped phase transitions and across the lines separating different phases in the J(2)-delta plane. All the calculations in this work are based on numerical exact diagonalizations of finite systems.

Tissue injury during therapeutic ultrasound or lithotripsy is thought, in cases, to be due to the action of cavitation bubbles. Assessing this and mitigating it is challenging since bubble dynamics in the complex confinement of tissues or in small blood vessels are challenging to predict. Simulations tools require specialized algorithms to simultaneously represent strong acoustic waves and shocks, topologically complex liquid‐vapor phase boundaries, and the complex viscoelastic material dynamics of tissue. We discuss advances in a simulation tool for such situations. A single‐mesh Eulerian solver is used to solve the governing equations. Special sharpening terms maintain the liquid‐vapor interface in face of the finite numerical dissipation included in the scheme to accurately capture shocks. A recent enhancement to this formulation has significantly improved this interface capturing procedure, which is demonstrated for simulation of the Rayleigh collapse of a bubble. The solver also transports elastic stresses and can thus be used to assess the effects of elastic properties on bubble dynamics. A shock‐induced bubble collapse adjacent to a model elastic tissue is used to demonstrate this and draw some conclusions regarding the injury suppressing role that tissue elasticity might play.

We present a unified study of the effect of periodic, quasiperiodic, and disordered potentials on topological phases that are characterized by Majorana end modes in one-dimensional p-wave superconducting systems. We define a topological invariant derived from the equations of motion for Majorana modes and, as our first application, employ it to characterize the phase diagram for simple periodic structures. Our general result is a relation between the topological invariant and the normal state localization length. This link allows us to leverage the considerable literature on localization physics and obtain the topological phase diagrams and their salient features for quasiperiodic and disordered systems for the entire region of parameter space. We report on the synthesis, microstructure and thermal expansion studies on Ca0 center dot 5 + x/2Sr0 center dot 5 + x/2Zr4P6 -aEuro parts per thousand 2x Si-2x O-24 (x = 0 center dot 00 to 1 center dot 00) system which belongs to NZP family of low thermal expansion ceramics. The ceramics synthesized by co-precipitation method at lower calcination and the sintering temperatures were in pure NZP phase up to x = 0 center dot 37. For x a parts per thousand yen 0 center dot 5, in addition to NZP phase, ZrSiO4 and Ca2P2O7 form as secondary phases after sintering. The bulk thermal expansion behaviour of the members of this system was studied from 30 to 850 A degrees C. The thermal expansion coefficient increases from a negative value to a positive value with the silicon substitution in place of phosphorous and a near zero thermal expansion was observed at x = 0 center dot 75. The amount of hysteresis between heating and cooling curves increases progressively from x = 0 center dot 00 to 0 center dot 37 and then decreases for x > 0 center dot 37. The results were analysed on the basis of formation of the silicon based glassy phase and increase in thermal expansion anisotropy with silicon substitution.
