Behind the high walls of a prison, there is suffering! Suffering from those who atone to their punishment, from those who work on behalf of an alleged regeneration, suffering that has remained for over two centuries. For those who had their conducts characterized as a crime, many studies have been developed. On the other hand, little is known about the prison servants. This research focused mainly on the identification, from the perspective of the correctional officers from two prisons in different states of Brazil, of the negative influence that their jobs have on them, on the factors that serve as protection, as well as the ones that offer them risk. It was observed that hygiene and security conditions are precarious in both prisons. From the reports, scabies, tuberculosis, hepatitis, H1N1, constant violence, politicization of the working environment, doubled working hours, lack of career planning and salaries emerge as evidence of the place where the bodies who work there are subdued, not taking the differences into account. From the above, and as of the many things that still need to be said about this category, it is reiterated the importance in developing studies about the conditions and the work organization and its implications on the mental health of those workers, who lack of public policies committed to their working realities

Objectives: To compare modes and sources of infection and clinical and biosafety aspects of accidental viral infections in hospital workers and research laboratory staff reported in scientific articles. Methods: PubMed, Google Scholar, ISI Web of Knowledge, Scirus, and Scielo were searched (to December 2008) for reports of accidental viral infections, written in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or German; the authors' personal file of scientific articles and references from the articles retrieved in the initial search were also used. Systematic review was carried out with inclusion criteria of presence of accidental viral infection's cases information, and exclusion criteria of absence of information about the viral etiology, and at least probable mode of infection. Results: One hundred and forty-one scientific articles were obtained, 66 of which were included in the analysis. For arboviruses, 84% of the laboratory infections had aerosol as the source; for alphaviruses alone, aerosol exposure accounted for 94% of accidental infections. of laboratory arboviral infections, 15.7% were acquired percutaneously, whereas 41.6% of hospital infections were percutaneous. For airborne viruses, 81% of the infections occurred in laboratories, with hantavirus the leading causative agent. Aerosol inhalation was implicated in 96% of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infections, 99% of hantavirus infections, and 50% of coxsackievirus infections, but infective droplet inhalation was the leading mode of infection for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and the mucocutaneous mode of infection was involved in the case of infection with influenza B. For blood-borne viruses, 92% of infections occurred in hospitals and 93% of these had percutaneous mode of infection, while among laboratory infections 77% were due to infective aerosol inhalation. Among blood-borne virus infections there were six cases of particular note: three cases of acute hepatitis following hepatitis C virus infection with a short period of incubation, one laboratory case of human immunodeficiency virus infection through aerosol inhalation, one case of hepatitis following hepatitis G virus infection, and one case of fulminant hepatitis with hepatitis B virus infection following exposure of the worker's conjunctiva to hepatitis B virus e antigen-negative patient saliva. of the 12 infections with viruses with preferential mucocutaneous transmission, seven occurred percutaneously, aerosol was implicated as a possible source of infection in two cases, and one atypical infection with Macacine herpesvirus 1 with fatal encephalitis as the outcome occurred through a louse bite. One outbreak of norovirus infection among hospital staff had as its probable mode of infection the ingestion of inocula spread in the environment by fomites. Conclusions: The currently accepted and practiced risk analysis of accidental viral infections based on the conventional dynamics of infection of the etiological agents is insufficient to cope with accidental viral infections in laboratories and to a lesser extent in hospitals, where unconventional modes of infection are less frequently present but still have relevant clinical and potential epidemiological consequences. Unconventional modes of infection, atypical clinical development, or extremely severe cases are frequently present together with high viral loads and high virulence of the agents manipulated in laboratories. In hospitals by contrast, the only possible association of atypical cases is with the individual resistance of the worker. Current standard precaution practices are insufficient to prevent most of the unconventional infections in hospitals analyzed in this study; it is recommended that special attention be given to flaviviruses in these settings. Ostriches' erythrocytic parameters help on the diagnosis of specific pathologies and serve as basic knowledge for studies in comparative avian pathology. To obtain reference values of erythrocyte indices for ostriches (Struthio camelus) raised in a commercial system in Brazil and verify if there are differences between gender and age groups, 240 healthy from both sexes animals were bled. Heparinized blood samples were analyzed using standard techniques to determine the red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) values, besides the red cell morphometry analysis using a computer software that calculates the greater and the smaller diameters of the erythrocytes. Prior to data analysis, ostriches were divided into three different age groups: from four to 13 months, from 13 to 23 months and from 23 to 30 months the. Younger ostriches presented lower erythrocyte indices than the older ones. The age group effect was only significant in females for the erythrocyte, hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, and MCHC variables. The female ostriches presented PCV, MCV, MCH, and MCHC values significantly higher than males in some age groups. It was observed that the erythrocytes of the female ostriches are more elongated and larger than males. It was concluded that erythrocytic parameters of ostriches in São José do Rio Preto-SP, Brazil are influenced by gender and age, highlighting the importance of consider besides these factors also the geoclimatic conditions to an adequate interpretation of the erythrogram.

This study aimed to stablish the efficacy of a multivitamin and polyminerals supplemented with Panax ginseng extract (Natus Gerin ®) on patients subjected to common physical or mental stress. Patients were randomly divided in two groups and underwent a thorough clinical examination. Group A received Natus Gerin ® capsules and B placebo capsules. Two capsules were taken daily during meals during four weeks. Mood and physical activity were evaluated through a questionnaire assessing quality of life. From the 176 patients enrolled, 17 were excluded due to voluntary withdrawal, 81 completed the study in group A and 78 in group B. The treatment with Natus Gerin ® increased the quality of life when compared to placebo. After 15 and 30 days, group A showed a significant increase in average scoring score from 1.78 to 3.78, and finally 5.32 points. The study has shown that the daily use of Natus Gerin ® can be effective in improving quality of life in patients suffering from physical and mental stress.

There are several difficulties in the control of quick spreading and highly contagious poultry diseases such as avian influenza and Newcastle disease, which require large numbers of poultry to be rapidly killed inside the poultry houses in order to minimize human exposure and disease spreading. We have built and tested an equipment that uses a waterbased foam from high expansion fire detergent that induces poultry anoxia measured by sensorial signs, time to death, lethality and macro and microscopically lesions. Two hundred 78-weeks old hens were divided into ten groups and exposed to different times of death according to exposure to water-foam varying from 5min30s to 8min15s. All poultry died after six minutes of water-foam cover. Foam bubbles were observed in oral cavity and trachea of all poultry at each time of exposure to foam, revealing physical asphyxia. Macroscopically, congestion in oral cavity and in trachea mucosa was observed. Histopathology revealed diffuse and moderate hemorrhage in lungs and no lesion in trachea. The efficacy of water-foam procedure for poultry depopulation was demonstrated validating its recommendation in case of emergency.

The Mx1 protein is encoded by an interferon- induced gene and shares domain organization, homooligomerization capacity and membrane association with the large dynamin-like GTPases. The Mx1 protein is involved in the response to a large number of RNA viruses, such as the bunyavirus family and the influenza virus. Interestingly, it has also been found as a methylation-silenced gene in several types of neoplasm, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. In this scenario, MX1 gene silencing is associated with immortalization in several neoplastic cell lines. Thus, Mx1 stands out as one of the key proteins involved in interferon-induced immune response and also plays an important role in cell cycle control. Here we discuss some of the functions of the Mx1 protein, including its antiviral activity, protein folding and involvement in neoplasia, as well as those revealed by investigating its cellular partners.

In Latin America, adult influenza is a serious disease that exacts a heavy burden in terms of morbidity, mortality, and cost. Although much has been written about the disease itself, relatively little information has been compiled on what could be done to reduce its impact across the region, particularly from the perspective of clinicians with firsthand experience in confronting its effects. To fill this data gap, in 2011, the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the U.S.-based nonprofit Fighting Infectious Diseases in Emerging Countries (FIDEC) organized a conference and convened a panel of Latin American scientistclinicians with experience and expertise in adult influenza in the region to 1) discuss the major issues related to the disease and 2) develop and produce a consensus statement summarizing its impact as well as current efforts to diagnose, prevent, and treat it. The consensus panel concluded a more concerted and better-coordinated effort was needed to reduce the adverse impact of seasonal influenza and future pandemics, including more surveillance, more active involvement by both governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and a much greater effort to vaccinate more adults, especially those at high risk of contracting the disease. In addition, a new approach for diagnosing influenza was recommended.
