Seat belts are effective safety devices used to protect car occupants from severe injuries and fatalities during road vehicle accidents. Despite the proven effectiveness of seat belts, seat belt use rates are quite low, especially in developing countries, such as Turkey. The general aim of the present study was to investigate a large variety of factors related to seat belt use among Turkish car occupants using different perspectives and methods and therefore, to contribute to the design of effective seat belt use interventions for increasing seat belt use rates in Turkey. Five sub-studies were conducted within the present study. In the first sub-study, environmental (e.g., road type) and psycho-social factors (e.g., belt use by other car occupants) related to the seat belt use of front-seat occupants were investigated using observation techniques. Being male, of a young age, and traveling on city roads were the main factors negatively related to seat belt use. Furthermore, seat belt use by the drivers and front-seat passengers was highly correlated and a significant predictors of each other. In the second sub-study, the motivations of the car occupants for seat belt use and non-use were investigated using interview techniques. Situational conditions, such as traveling on city roads and for short distances, and not believing in the effectiveness and relevance of seat belt use for safety, were the most frequently reported reasons for not using a seat belt. Safety, habit and avoiding punishment were among the most frequently reported reasons for using a seat belt. In the third sub-study, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Health Belief Model (HBM) were applied to seat belt use using Structural Equation Modeling techniques. The TPB model showed a good fit to the data, whereas the HBM showed a poor fit to the data. Within the TPB model, attitude and subjective norm were significant predictors of intentions to use a seat belt on both urban and rural roads. In the fourth sub-study, seat belt use frequency and motivations for seat belt use among taxi drivers were investigated and compared between free-time and work-time driving using a survey. The results showed that taxi drivers used seat belts more when driving a private car in their free-times compared to when driving a taxi during their work-times. The lack of a legal obligation to use a seat belt in city traffic and fear of being attacked or robbed by the passengers were found as two specific reasons for not using a seat belt when driving a taxi. Lastly, in the fifth sub-study, the relationship of seat belt use to driver and health behaviors was investigated using a survey. Although seat belt use was related both to health and driver behaviors, factor analysis results showed that it grouped with driver behaviors. Based on the results of the sub-studies, a tentative empirical model showing different predictors of seat belt use was proposed. According to the model, safety and normative motivations and perceived physical barriers related to seat belt use are the three important predictors of seat belt use. Aggressive driving has been shown to be related to increased crash risk for car driving. However, less is known about aggressive behaviour and motorcycle riding and whether there are differences in on-road aggression as a function of vehicle type. If such differences exist, these could relate to differences in perceptions of relative vulnerability associated with characteristics of the type of vehicle such as level of protection and performance. Specifically, the relative lack of protection offered by motorcycles may cause riders to feel more vulnerable and therefore to be less aggressive when they are riding compared to when they are driving. This study examined differences in self-reported aggression as a function of two vehicle types: passenger cars and motorcycles. Respondents (n = 247) were all motorcyclists who also drove a car. Results were that scores for the composite driving aggression scale were significantly higher than on the composite riding aggression scale. Regression analyses identified different patterns of predictors for driving aggression from those for riding aggression. Safety attitudes followed by thrill seeking tendencies were the strongest predictors for driving aggression, with more positive safety attitudes being protective while greater thrill seeking was associated with greater self-reported aggressive driving behaviour. For riding aggression, thrill seeking was the strongest predictor (positive relationship), followed by self-rated skill, such that higher self rated skill was protective against riding aggression. Participants who scored at the 85th percentile or above for the aggressive driving and aggressive riding indices had significantly higher scores on thrill seeking, greater intentions to engage in future risk taking, and lower safety attitude scores than other participants. In addition participants with the highest aggressive driving scores also had higher levels of self-reported past traffic offences than other participants. Collectively, these findings suggest that people are less likely to act aggressively when riding a motorcycle than when driving a car, and that those who are the most aggressive drivers are different from those who are the most aggressive riders. However, aggressive riders and drivers appear to present a risk to themselves and others on road. Importantly, the underlying influences for aggressive riding or driving that were identified in this study may be amenable to education and training interventions.

This article analyzes the operations of a sample of rental independent living senior apartments in Tampere, Finland. We compare 10 properties containing 421 units owned by one nonprofit and two for-profit housing providers. We examine costs and revenues across properties using data collected through interviews and a survey of company representatives and property managers. The results indicate that until the recent economic downturn, these senior houses generally experienced fast initial lease-up and low turnover but relatively long vacancies for some units when re-leasing. Performance varies among properties.

This is a qualitative and multimethodological comparative study, which consists of two main parts: examining the development of new media and analysing and comparing the new media strategies of the three companies studied (Alma Media, Sanoma and the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yleisradio). The study includes the first large-scale review in Finnish of the development of new media, paying attention to the birth of the Internet as well as to mobile media, web TV and any other element of new media. It also concentrates on the function of electronic distribution channels before the age of the Internet, e.g. cable text and videotext. Answers about how the three traditional Finnish media houses began spreading their content to the Internet and wireless applications in 1994–2004 are also given. In researching the new media strategies the study pays special attention to the attitudes that the three media companies adopted towards the Internet and other forms of new media in their strategies during the years in question. By analysing and comparing, e.g., the companies’ strategies and their investments, the study ascertains whether the companies had a joint functional model in adopting new media or acted totally on their own without taking too much notice of the media field overall. The study makes extensive use of previously published material. The researcher has also interviewed almost twenty people who were involved in getting the companies’ new media functions under way. The methods for the interviews were dialogue and snowball sampling. The researcher has created a classification in which he divides the business strategies into four different categories: active strategy, careful strategy, permissive strategy, and passive strategy. In comparing and analysing the companies the researcher has used the classification devised by Allan Afuah & Christopher L. Tucci. The seven element classification consists of dominant managerial logic, competency trap, fear of cannibalisation and loss of revenue, channel conflict, political power, co-opetitor power and emotional attachment. In analysing the company strategies the researcher has also noted the classifications of convergence made by Everette E. Dennis and Graham Murdock as well as the aspects formulated by Sylvia Chan-Olmsted and Louisa Ha concerning the success of the companies in adopting the Internet into their functions. Based on all these classifications and by further developing them the researcher analyses and compares the success of the new media strategies of the three Finnish companies. The outcome of the study is a conclusion as to what kind of strategies the companies have carried out their new media functions and how they have succeeded in it.

Images and brands have been topics of great interest in both academia and practice for a long time. The companys image, which in this study is considered equivalent to the actual corporate brand, has become a strategic issue and one of the companys most valuable assets. In contrast to mainstream corporate branding research focusing on consumerimages as steered and managed by the company, in the present study a genuine consumer-focus is taken. The question is asked: how do consumers perceive the company, and especially, how are their experiences of the company over time reflected in the corporate image? The findings indicate that consumers’ corporate images can be seen as being constructed through dynamic relational processes based on a multifaceted network of earlier images from multiple sources over time. The essential finding is that corporate images have a heritage. In the thesis, the concept of image heritage is introduced, which stands for the consumer’s earlier company-related experiences from multiple sources over time. In other words, consumers construct their images of the company based on earlier recalled images, perhaps dating back many years in time. Therefore, corporate images have roots - an image heritage – on which the images are constructed in the present. For companies, image heritage is a key for understanding consumers, and thereby also a key for consumer-focused branding strategies and activities. As image heritage is the consumer’s interpretation base and context for image constructions here and now, branding strategies and activities that meet this consumer-reality has a potential to become more effective. This thesis is positioned in the tradition of The Nordic School of Marketing Thought and introduces a relational dynamic perspective into branding through consumers’ image heritage. This article discusses the potential of bio-dimethyl ether (DME) as a promising fuel for India in the transportation sector where a majority of imported petroleum in the form of diesel is used. Specifically, the suitability of DME in terms of its properties vis-a-vis those of diesel, ability to liquefy DME at low pressures similar to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and ease of production from renewable feedstock (biomass), and most importantly, very low emissions including near-zero soot levels are some of the features that make it an attractive option. A detailed review presents the state-of-the-art on various aspects such as estimates of potential bio-DME production, methods of synthesis of bio-DME, important physicochemical properties, fuel-injection system-related concerns (both conventional and common-rail system), fuel spray characteristics which have a direct bearing on the engine performance, and finally, exhaust emissions. HIGHLIGHTS FOR FY 2008 1. Completed the first of a two-year Gulf sturgeon population study on the Choctawhatchee River, Florida. The sub adult and adult Gulf sturgeon population was estimated at 2,800 fish. 2. Gulf sturgeon eggs were collected at three hard bottom sites in the Apalachicola River, Florida; two sites were previously confirmed spawning areas and one was a newly confirmed spawning area. 3. Documented 55 potential environmental threats to Gulf sturgeon spawning habitat in the Pea River, Florida and Alabama. 4. Assigned the Eglin AFB Road-Stream Crossing Working Group to guide the closure, repair and maintenance of roads and road stream crossings that impact threatened and endangered species. 5. Conducted 81 assessments of fish and stream invertebrates on and in watersheds surrounding Eglin AFB. 6. Provided technical support for the 5-year status review and reclassification proposed rule for the Okaloosa darter. 7. Initiated an intensive population genetic analysis of the Okaloosa darter throughout its range. Tissues from over 200 Okaloosa darters were collected and analyzed. 8. Established a GIS database to serve as a host for data from any sites sampled for mussels in Northeast Gulf of Mexico drainages. 9. Conducted habitat surveys at 115 locations in the Apalachicola River to assess the effects of drought-related mussel mortality and strandings, evaluate habitat conditions, and assess population demography. 10. A land use/aerial imagery threats assessment data analysis was completed for the Chipola River. A total of 266 impoundments/borrow pits and 471 unpaved road crossings were identified among the threats. 11. Okaloosa darters marked with elastomeric dyes were monitored in Mill Creek, Eglin AFB, to determine movement and habitat use following completion of a fish passage project. 3 12. Partners for Fish and Wildlife funded a streambank and riparian restoration project on Econfina Creek consisting of 3,900 feet of streambank fencing to exclude cattle access. One acre of riparian floodplain was planted with native trees. 13. We provided design and on-the-ground assistance for restoring surface hydrology at St. Vincent NWR. The project restored approximately 1.5 miles of tidal stream and 100 acres of wetlands. 14. A study was completed on 11 coastal streams to document large wood debris relationships with fluvial geomorphic characteristics. 15. We developed a Population Viability Analysis model for the fat threeridge mussel to determine current and future risk of extinction. 17. A Gulf Sturgeon Friends Group, “Gulf Sturgeon Preservation Society” was organized in FY 08. 18. Multiple outreach projects were completed to detail aquatic resource conservation needs and opportunities, including National Fishing Week, Earth Day, several festivals and school outreach.

The Los Angeles Harbor at San Pedro with its natural advantages, and the big development of these now underway, will very soon be the key to the traffic routes of Southern California. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railway company realizing this and, not wishing to be caught asleep, has planned to build a line from El Segundo to the harbor. The developments of the harbor are not the only developments taking place in these localities and the proposed new line is intended to include these also.

O objetivo desta pesquisa acadêmica é o de compreender os aspectos que envolvem os gastos com educação dos municípios que compõe a região metropolitana do Estado do Rio de Janeiro no período de 2004 a 2008, através do estudo da sua aplicação e dos aspectos que envolvem a sociedade. Apesar do acesso às informações financeiras dos entes governamentais serem disponibilizada mediante a atuação das finanças públicas, dando cumprimento às diferentes normas legais, a necessidade de tornar transparente o patrimônio público insere a um percepção por uma demanda por modelos de indicadores que evidenciem o controle dos gastos públicos. Desta forma, pretende-se entender as relações e características que envolvem tais informações e aguça a atenção em melhor conhecê-las. A análise de diferenciados aspectos governamentais, legais e socioambiental que afetam os gastos públicos em educação dos municípios que ocupam a região metropolitana do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, impondo aos entes governamentais algumas das responsabilidades que são compartilhadas pela população, legisladores e administradores. O conhecimento dos padrões de comportamento dos envolvidos nesta relação traz esclarecimentos úteis, como fundamentais, para o planejamento e o controle a curto e longo prazo. Ao desenvolver a pesquisa bibliográfica, esta requereu uma revisão das obras literárias e nas experiências e vivências nelas contidas para satisfazer a curiosidade crítica que propelia a pesquisa. A discussão precedente das análises efetuadas neste estudo mostrou a ampla possibilidade em ressaltar-se que compreender e acompanhar os gastos públicos em educação e a elaboração de indicadores de percepção dos gastos públicos representa papel de suma importância ao exercício democrático de fiscalização do poder público pela sociedade.

Dado o crescente uso da Internet e a importância da linguagem do e-mail no ambiente corporativo, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal analisar as estratégias de polidez e os mecanismos de preservação de face em trocas de e-mails entre um grupo de gerentes de uma instituição privada de ensino de língua inglesa no Brasil. A pesquisa é um estudo de caso e faz uso de uma abordagem interpretativista, assim como, em partes, também usa dados quantitativos. Para tanto, neste estudo foram integradas à Pragmática outras áreas de pesquisa como a Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional e a Linguística de Corpus. O enfoque nos mecanismos de polidez e proteção de face tem o objetivo de estudar de que forma estes elementos da linguagem utilizada nas trocas de e-mails entre o grupo de gerentes envolvido no estudo estão refletidos na cultura organizacional da instituição. Para tal foram usados os conceitos de Brown e Levinson (1987) para polidez, o de Goffman (1998) para footing e enquadre. Na área de categorização de grupos padronizados de palavras achados frequentemente dentro de um corpus foram usados os parâmetros de Hyland (2008), parâmetros esses que são calcados nas três metafunções de Halliday. Por fim tecem-se comentários sobre as trocas escritas dentro da instituição através de e-mails, buscando entender se essas trocas fazem parte de um gênero estabelecido ou de uma forma de comunicação única e com características próprias. As análises realizadas neste estudo estudam formas de polidez e proteção de face nas saudações e fechos de e-mails do corpus de estudo, a linguagem usada em pedidos de ajuda/informações, na resolução de conflitos e em outras situações do cotidiano dos gerentes da instituição alvo. Os resultados das análises da linguagem usada nas mensagens eletrônicas trocadas pelo grupo sugerem uma relação direta entra a cultura organizacional e os típicos mecanismos característicos de proteção de face e polidez adotados nas mensagens dos gerentes da empresa

Esta pesquisa usou o estudo de caso para analisar os resíduos eletroeletrônicos gerados em uma Empresa prestadora de serviços atuante no setor naval. Após breve reflexão sobre a relação homem-natureza, apresenta-se o conceito de resíduos sólidos e suas classificações, introduzindo-se dados que embasam o impacto dos eletroeletrônicos na geração de resíduos no Brasil. Em seguida, discorre-se sobre a evolução da eletricidade e da eletrônica até os dias atuais, passando-se a comentar os aspectos e impactos da produção e descarte dos dispositivos eletroeletrônicos, que utilizam algumas substâncias tóxicas em sua manufatura. Destacam-se alguns caminhos alternativos para os resíduos eletroeletrônicos como o reuso, o reaproveitamento e a reciclagem que abriram caminhos para novos negócios. O estudo se volta para uma abordagem da legislação ambiental, mencionando aspectos da legislação dos Estados Unidos e da Europa, além de discorrer sobre fatos relevantes do ordenamento jurídico ambiental brasileiro, com ênfase na Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos. Esta Seção se encerra com um breve resumo do alinhamento do setor naval à legislação ambiental, através do uso das normas ISO da série 14.000. Prossegue-se com a descrição da Empresa onde se realizou o estudo de caso, apresentando-se um resumo acerca de sua trajetória, estrutura de funcionamento e a situação da gestão ambiental. Em seguida, é descrita a metodologia usada para o desenvolvimento do estudo de caso, detalhando-se os tipos de pesquisa e procedimentos utilizados para a caracterização dos resíduos eletroeletrônicos, bem como as ferramentas de gestão usadas para sua análise. Discorre-se, então, sobre o estudo de caso realizado na Empresa, com a apresentação das ações e pesquisas realizadas acerca de seus processos de geração e descarte de resíduos eletroeletrônicos. Os dados obtidos neste estudo foram analisados à luz do conhecimento ambiental e gestor e, com o auxílio de algumas ferramentas de gestão, foram selecionados os resíduos eletroeletrônicos mais impactantes e os com possibilidade de serem gerenciados pela Empresa. Encerrando o trabalho, as conclusões sobre o estudo e as sugestões para a melhoria do gerenciamento dos resíduos eletroeletrônicos são disponibilizadas para uso da Empresa, propondo-se também a implementação de um sistema de gerenciamento integrado para todos os resíduos nela gerados.

[ES]En la situación actual, en que las empresas han tenido que automatizar los procesos a nivel mundial para hacer frente a los nuevos retos de la competitividad, pone de manifiesto la necesidad de nuevas tecnologías para innovar y redefinir sus procesos. Este proyecto se centra en la aplicación de las nuevas tecnologías en un proceso de laminación en caliente para así a aumentar la capacidad de producción y la calidad de la empresa. Para ello, en primer lugar, se analiza la planta y el proceso a automatizar, se señalan los problemas y se procede a estudiar la solución más adecuada. Después de seleccionar la solución, se colocan sensores y actuadores a lo largo del proceso en función de los pasos a seguir por la fabricación. Con todo ello se ha diseñado una secuencia de control para que el proceso sea autónomo. Además, se diseña un algoritmo para controlar el arranque de los motores, reduciendo así el consumo de energía. En conclusión, se desea mejorar un viejo proceso de producción a través de la automatización y las nuevas tecnologías. Breve descripción del trabajo (cinco líneas). El trabajo que se presenta a continuación es un plan de marketing para la empresa Gastronomía Vasca, concretamente, para el desarrollo de uno de sus servicios, Menú 2.0, el cual se creó en 2012 y para el que se pretende establecer el camino de crecimiento para el periodo 2015/2016. Para la determinación del modo en el que desarrollar este crecimiento, en primer lugar, se va a analizar la situación en la que se encuentra actualmente tanto a nivel interno como respecto del entorno. Esto nos permitirá detectar las fortalezas y las debilidades que presenta la empresa, así como las amenazas y las oportunidades que le ofrece el entorno, y a partir de las cuales se definirán los objetivos que deben establecerse para Menú 2.0. Por último, tras la definición de los objetivos, se establecerán las estrategias y las acciones que se han de realizar para el cumplimiento de éstos. Además, se establecerán métodos de control para que la empresa pueda medir durante el desarrollo del plan, el cumplimiento de los objetivos planteados.

El presente trabajo se centra en la realización de un Plan Estratégico para la Editorial Pentagon, empresa establecida y que actúa en el mercado de los Países Bajos. La empresa realizó un plan previamente, por lo que en algunos aspectos se realizan aportaciones a dicho plan. Se lleva a cabo un análisis de la situación actual de la empresa, y la evolución sufrida por la misma y la del sector, con el fin de poder determinar los aspectos que la empresa está trabajando de forma adecuada o, los que por el contrario, no está explotando o gestionando de una forma eficiente o que le permita alcanzar sus objetivos. Se analizan en profundidad los factores determinantes del sector de actuación de la empresa, para posteriormente poder fijar unos objetivos y estrategias a seguir por parte de la misma para poder enfrentarse de la mejor forma a dicho entorno.
