The solubilities of butyl stearate and butyl laurate were determined in the temperature range of 308 K to 323 K and 313 K to 328 K, respectively, at pressures of 10 MPa to 16 MPa. The solubility of butyl laurate was higher than that of butyl stearate by almost an order in magnitude. Retrograde behavior was observed throughout the investigated pressure range. Semiempirical models such as Mendez-Teja, Chrastil, and other density-based models were used to correlate the experimental data of our work as well as several other liquid solutes.

An experimental investigation of sonic air, CO2 and Helium transverse jets in Mach 5 cross flow was carried out over a flat plate. The jet to freestream momentum flux ratio, J, was kept the same for all gases. The unsteady flow topology was examined using high speed schlieren visualisation and PIV. Schlieren visualisation provided information regarding oscillating jet shear layer structures and bow shock, Mach disc and barrel shocks. Two-component PIV measurements at the centreline, provided information regarding jet penetration trajectories. Barrel shocks and Mach disc forming the jet boundary were visualised/quantified also jet penetration boundaries were determined. Even though J is kept the same for all gases, the penetration patterns were found to be remarkably different both at the nearfield and the farfield. Air and CO2 jet resulted similar nearfield and farfield penetration pattern whereas Helium jet spread minimal in the nearfield.

Ag doped BaTiO3-CuO mixed oxide thin films are evaluated for their carbon-dioxide sensing characteristics. The metal oxide films of different thicknesses are deposited on oxidized p type Si < 100 > substrate by RF Sputtering. Sensing characteristics for different CO2 concentration, (300 ppm - 1000 ppm) are obtained for different operating temperatures, (100 degrees C - 400 degrees C). Optimum temperature for maximum sensitivity is found to be 250 degrees C. The effect of annealing on sensing properties is also evaluated. The unannealed films give better sensitivity than that of annealed films. Response time and recovery time are also calculated.

Manganese dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical reduction route at different growth temperatures of 40 degrees C, 80 degrees C, 100 degrees C and were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) analysis. FESEM results show that on increasing growth temperature the morphology changes from clusters into mixture of rods and flakes. XPS analysis reveals the formation of MnO2. Then these particles were immobilized on Pt electrode. A platinum (Pt) electrode modified with low dimensional MnO2 was investigated as a chronoamperometric (CA) sensor for hydrogen peroxide sensing (H2O2). The sample prepared at 100 degrees C shows good electrocatalytic ability for H2O2 sensing when compared with the samples prepared at 40 degrees C and 80 degrees C. At an operating potential of 0.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl catalytic oxidation of the analyte is measured for chronoamperometric (CA) monitoring. The CA signals are linearly proportional to the concentration of H2O2. It is also found that the morphology of the nanostructure plays a vital role in the detection of H2O2. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A mild and convenient method for the synthesis of amides has been explored by using secondary alcohols, Cu(ClO4)(2)6H(2)O as a catalyst, and trimethylsilyl azide (TMSN3) as a nitrogen source in the presence of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) at ambient temperature. This method has been successfully adapted to the preparation of azides directly from their corresponding alcohols and offers excellent chemoselectivity in the formation of -halo azides and the azidation of allylic alcohols in the presence of a benzyl alcohol moiety. In addition, this strategy provides an opportunity to synthesize azides that can serve as precursors to -amino acids.

The synthesis of high molecular weight esters such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate is of significance for its use as a lubricant. This ester is synthesized by the transesterification of dimethyl sebacate with 2-ethylhexanol. Therefore, the solubilities of bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate and dimethyl sebacate were determined at 308-328 K at pressures of 10-18 MPa in supercritical carbon dioxide. The solubility of dimethyl sebacate was always higher than bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate at a given temperature and pressure. The Mendez-Teja model was used to verify the self-consistency of data. Further, a new semi-empirical model with three parameters was developed using the solution theory coupled with Wilson activity coefficient. This model was used to correlate the experimental data of this work and solubilities of many high molecular weight esters reported in the literature. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Performance of supercapacitors based on 1:1 (by weight) composites of polyaniline (PANI) with nanosheets of nitrogenated reduced graphene oxide (NRGO), BC1.5N, MoS2 and WS2 has been investigated in detail. The highest specific capacitance is found with the 1:1 NRGO-PANI composite, the value being 561 F/g at a current density of 0.2 A/g. All the 1:1 nanocomposites show good cyclability. Increasing the PANI content increases the specific capacitance and the highest value found being 715 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g in the case of the 1:6 NRGO-PANI composite. However, all the 1:6 composites show a marked decrease in specific capacitance with increase in current density. The energy density of 1:6 NRGO-PANI is similar to 25 Wh/Kg at 0.5 A/g and 1:1 NRGO-PANI is similar to 19 Wh/Kg at 0.2 A/g. NRGO-PANI composites clearly stand out as viable materials for practical applications. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The challenge in the electrosynthesis of fuels from CO2 is to achieve durable and active performance with cost-effective catalysts. Here, we report that carbon nanotubes (CNTs), doped with nitrogen to form resident electron-rich defects, can act as highly efficient and, more importantly, stable catalysts for the conversion of CO2 to CO. The unprecedented overpotential (-0.18 V) and selectivity (80%) observed on nitrogen-doped CNTs (NCNTs) are attributed to their unique features to facilitate the reaction, including (i) high electrical conductivity, (ii) preferable catalytic sites (pyridinic N defects), and (iii) low free energy for CO2 activation and high barrier for hydrogen evolution. Indeed, DFT calculations show a low free energy barrier for the potential-limiting step to form key intermediate COOH as well as strong binding energy of adsorbed CON and weak binding energy for the adsorbed CO. The highest selective site toward CO production is pyridinic N, and the NCNT-based electrodes exhibit no degradation over 10 h of continuous operation, suggesting the structural stability of the electrode.

Here, we report the synthesis of boron and nitrogen Co-doped carbon nanoparticles (BN-CNPs) by a hydrothermal method using sucrose, boric acid, and urea as the precursors. The BN-CNPs show excellent photoluminescence with a quantum yield of similar to 14.2% in aqueous solution and can be used as photoluminescent probes for selective and sensitive detection of picric acid (PA). PA quenches the photoluminescence signal remarkably, while other explosives cause a little quenching confirming the high selectivity of BN-CNPs. The sensitivity toward PA sensing is high at pH 7 and increases with temperature. The detection limit as well as the sensitivity are shown to improve by adding NaCl to the PA. The low detection limit can be as low as 10 nM at room temperature and pH 7, which indicates the BN-CNPs are superior as compared to other luminescent probes reported in the literature.

We report the synthesis of high quality vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films by a novel spray pyrolysis technique, namely ultrasonic nebulized spray pyrolysis of aqueous combustion mixture (UNSPACM). This simple and cost effective two step process involves synthesis of a V2O5 film on an LaAlO3 substrate followed by a controlled reduction to form single phase VO2. The formation of M1 phase (p21/c) is confirmed by Raman spectroscopic studies. A thermally activated metal-insulator transition (MIT) was observed at 61 degrees C, where the resistivity changes by four orders of magnitude. Activation energies for the low conduction phase and the high conduction phase were obtained from temperature variable resistance measurements. The infrared spectra also show a dramatic change in reflectance from 13% to over 90% in the wavelength range of 7-15 mu m. This indicates the suitability of the films for optical switching applications at infrared frequencies.

We report synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and thermal analysis of zinc acetylacetonate complex adducted by nitrogen donor ligands, such as pyridine, bipyridine, and phenanthroline. The pyridine adducted complex crystallizes to monoclinic crystal structure, whereas other two adducted complexes have orthorhombic structure. Addition of nitrogen donor ligands enhances the thermal property of these complexes as that with parent metal-organic complex. Zinc acetylacetonate adducted with pyridine shows much higher volatility (106 degrees C), decomposition temperature (202 degrees C) as that with zinc acetylacetonate (136 degrees C, 220 degrees C), and other adducted complexes. All the adducted complexes are thermally stable, highly volatile and are considered to be suitable precursors for metal organic chemical vapor deposition. The formation of these complexes is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The complexes are widely used as starting precursor materials for the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures by microwave irradiation assisted coating process. (c) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-kappa TiO2 thin films have been fabricated using cost effective sol-gel and spin-coating technique on p-Si (100) wafer. Plasma activation process was used for better adhesion between TiO2 films and Si. The influence of annealing temperature on the structure-electrical properties of titania films were investigated in detail. Both XRD and Raman studies indicate that the anatase phase crystallizes at 400 degrees C, retaining its structural integrity up to 1000 degrees C. The thickness of the deposited films did not vary significantly with the annealing temperature, although the refractive index and the RMS roughness enhanced considerably, accompanied by a decrease in porosity. For electrical measurements, the films were integrated in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structure. The electrical measurements evoke a temperature dependent dielectric constant with low leakage current density. The Capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of the films annealed at 400 degrees C exhibited a high value of dielectric constant (similar to 34). Further, frequency dependent C-V measurements showed a huge dispersion in accumulation capacitance due to the presence of TiO2/Si interface states and dielectric polarization, was found to follow power law dependence on frequency (with exponent `s'=0.85). A low leakage current density of 3.6 x 10(-7) A/cm(2) at 1 V was observed for the films annealed at 600 degrees C. The results of structure-electrical properties suggest that the deposition of titania by wet chemical method is more attractive and cost-effective for production of high-kappa materials compared to other advanced deposition techniques such as sputtering, MBE, MOCVD and AID. The results also suggest that the high value of dielectric constant kappa obtained at low processing temperature expands its scope as a potential dielectric layer in MOS device technology. We discuss here a semiconductors assembly comprising of titanium dioxide (TiO2) rods sensitized by cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals for potential applications in large area electronics on three dimensional (3-D) substrates. Vertically aligned TiO2 rods are grown on a substrate using a 150 degrees C process flow and then sensitized with CdS by SILAR method at room temperature. This structure forms an effective photoconductor as the photo-generated electrons are rapidly removed from the CdS via the TiO2 thereby permitting a hole rich CdS. Current-voltage characteristics are measured and models illustrate space charge limited photo-current as the mechanism of charge transport at moderate voltage bias. The stable assembly and high speed are achieved. The frequency response with a loading of 10 pF and 9 M Omega shows a half power frequency of 100 Hz. (C) 2015 The Electrochemical Society. The solubilities of 10-undecenoic acid and geraniol in supercritical carbon dioxide were measured at 308, 313,323 and 333K, and at pressures of 10-18 MPa. Solubilities (in mole fraction),ranged from 0.4 x 10(-3) to 17.4 x 10(-3) for 10-undecenoic acid and 2.7 x 10(-3) to 25 x 10(-3) for geraniol, respectively. The AARD was around 11% and 5% for these models for 10-undecenoic acid and geraniol, respectively. The solubilities of both compounds showed retrograde behavior wherein the solubilities decrease with temperature at isobaric conditions. The solubility of geraniol was higher than 10-undecenoic acid at all investigated temperatures and pressures. The data were found to be self consistent based on the Mendez-Santiago model. New models based on association theory using van Laar and Margules activity coefficient models for solute in liquid phase were derived, and used to correlate the solubilities. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
