The reaction mechanism of the Beckmann rearrangement over B2O3/gamma-Al2O3 and TS-1 in the gas phase has been investigated by isotope labeling approach. The isotopic labeled products were measured by mass spectrometry method. By exchanging oxygen with H, 180 in the rearrangement step, it was found that the exchange reaction between cyclohexanone oxime and (H2O)-O-18 over B2O3/-gamma-Al2O3 and TS-1 could only be carried out in some extent. It suggested that the dissociation of nitrilium, over solid acids be not completely free as the classical mechanism. A concept of the dissociation degree (alpha) that is defined as the ratio of the dissociated intermediate nitrilium to the total intermediate nitrilium has been proposed. By fitting the experimental values with the calculation equation of isotopic labeled products, it is obtained that a values for B2O3/-gamma-Al2O3 and TS-1 are 0.199 and 0.806 at the reaction conditions, respectively.

Combining a single-molecule study of protein binding with a coarse grained molecular dynamics model including solvent (water molecules) effects, we find that biomolecular recognition is determined by flexibilities in addition to structures. Our single-molecule study shows that binding of CBD (a fragment of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein) to Cdc42 involves bound and loosely bound states, which can be quantitatively explained in our model as a result of binding with large conformational changes. Our model identified certain key residues for binding consistent with mutational experiments. Our study reveals the role of flexibility and a new scenario of dimeric binding between the monomers: first bind and then fold.

A modified Wittig polycondensation was developed by replacing the bulky -PPh3 with -PBu3 ylide. Our studies suggested that the modified polymerization dramatically enhances trans-selectivity due to the decreased 1.3-steric interaction between butyl chain and triphenylamine group, together with the 1,2-steric interaction between the phenyl ring of the ylide and the triphenylamine group of the aldehyde. Moreover, the method also enhances high-molecular weight products by increasing the activity and solubility of the ylide.

In this work. we report the fabrication of high-quality (101)-oriented orthorhombic NaMnF3 and (100)-oriented cubic KMnF3 perovskites via an organic monolayer template at room temperature. The controlled crystallization under the organic monolayer template is explained in terms of the electrostatic interactions and beneficial lattice matching between the organic template and the ions undergoing nucleation. The present study is of great importance in the preparation of oriented perovskite materials as well as in the understanding of the mechanism for organic-template-directed crystallization.

More than 22 000 folding kinetic simulations were performed to study the temperature dependence of the distribution of first passage time (FPT) for the folding of an all-atom Go-like model of the second beta-hairpin fragment of protein G. We find that the mean FPT (MFPT) for folding has a U (or V)-shaped dependence on the temperature with a minimum at a characteristic optimal folding temperature T-opt*. The optimal folding temperature T-opt* is located between the thermodynamic folding transition temperature and the solidification temperature based on the Lindemann criterion for the solid. Both the T-opt* and the MFPT decrease when the energy bias gap against nonnative contacts increases. The high-order moments are nearly constant when the temperature is higher than T-opt* and start to diverge when the temperature is lower than T-opt*. The distribution of FPT is close to a log-normal-like distribution at T* greater than or equal to T-opt*. At even lower temperatures, the distribution starts to develop long power-law-like tails, indicating the non-self-averaging intermittent behavior of the folding dynamics. It is demonstrated that the distribution of FPT can also be calculated reliably from the derivative of the fraction not folded (or fraction folded), a measurable quantity by routine ensemble-averaged experimental techniques at dilute protein concentrations.

The molecular structural parameters of indophenol and its derivatives were calculated by semi-empirical molecular orbital quantum chemical method,The relation between molecular structural parameters and formal potentials was analyzed by principal factor analysis and multiple Linear regression method. It was found that the formal potential of indophenols has a good relation with two-center electron exchange energy, E-ex (2), resonance energy of O-C bond, E-ex (C-1-O), and molecular ionization potential, I-p, among 19 moleclular structural parameters. The regression equation is E-0' = 1. 47 x 10 (-3) E-ex (two) - 5. 74 x 10 (-2) E-ex (C-1 - O) - 1. 41 x 10 (-2) I-p with RC = 0. 9999 and SD = 0. 00424. It was confirmed by the relation between structure parameters and formal potentials, and the thermodynamic stability of its intermediate products that the H (+) ionization is prior to the electron transfer step in the oxidation mechanism.

In this work, chemical structures and molecular parameters of grafted materials of PP-g-MAH prepared by melt reactive extrusion were studied by using electrospray ionization-mass spectrometer and gel permeation chromatography. It was found that the initial radicals, due to homolitic scission of dicumyl peroxide could be combined with maleic anhydride (MAH) monomers as well as polypropylene (PP) molecular chains. The homopolymerization of MAH cannot occur and the MAH radicals undergo a dismutational reaction under the processing condition (180-190 degreesC). A modified mechanism of melt grafting MAH onto PP has been proposed tentatively on the basis of our experimental results and other experimental findings published in the literature. Electrocatalytic mechanism for the electrochemical oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) on the highly dispersed Au microparticles electrodeposited on the surface of the glass carbon (GC) electrode in the alkaline Na2CO3/NaHCO3 solution and the surface characteristics of the Au microparticle-modified glass carbon (Au/GC) electrode were studied with in situ FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was found that the final products of HCHO oxidation is HCOO- at the Au/GC electrode and CO2 at the bulk Au electrode. The difference may be ascribed to the different surface characteristics between the Au/GC electrode and the bulk Au electrode. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

By mechanism-transformation (anionic --> cationic) poly(styrene-6-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymer, PS-b-PEOx, was synthesized in two steps. The first step is the polymerization of styrene block capped with ethylene oxide and its tosylation; the second step is the cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline. The products were thoroughly characterized by various methods, such as H-1-NMR, IR, DMA, TEM and SAXS. The results show that the copolymer obtained possesses high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution.

The compatibilization effect of poly(styrene-b-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymer, P(S-b-EOx), on immiscible blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) is examined in terms of phase structure and thermal, rheological and mechanical properties, and its compatibilizing mechanism is investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The block copolymer, synthesized by a mechanism transformation copolymerization, is used in solution blending of PPO/EAA. Scanning electron micrographs show that the blends exhibit a more regular and finer dispersion on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). Thermal analysis indicates that the grass transition of PPO and the lower endothermic peal; of EAA components become closer on adding P(S-b-EOx), and the added diblock copolymer is mainly located at the interface between the PPO and EAA phases. The interfacial tension estimated by theological measurement is significantly reduced on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). The tensile strength and elongation at break increase with the addition of the diblock copolymer for PPO-rich blends, whereas the tensile strength increases but the elongation at break decreases for EAA-rich blends. This effect is interpreted in terms of interfacial activity and the reinforcing effect of the diblock copolymer, and it is concluded that the diblock copolymer plays a role as an effective compatibilizer for PPO/EAA blends. The specific interaction between EAA and polar parts of P(S-b-EOx) is mainly hydrogen bonding. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Iron(II)-8-quinolino/MCM-41 is prepared. Its catalysis is studied in phenol hydroxylation using H2O2 (30%) as oxidant. The experiment shows that Iron(II)-8-quinolinol/MCM-41 has good catalytic activity and desired stability. Based on cyclic voltammetry, ESR, and UV-visible spectra studies of iron(II)-8-quinolinol complex in liquid phase, a radical substitution mechanism is proposed and used to demonstrate the experimental facts clearly. The thermosetting polyimide PMR-I5 and its blends with thermoplastic polyimides have been studied by dynamic mechanical analysis. The results obtained indicate that the level of beta relaxations in PMR-15 are increased with an increase in cross-linking density. This phenomenon is interpreted as a change of chemical structure during the cross-linking process. Addition of thermoplastic polyimide makes the magnitude of beta relaxations increase when PMR-15 is the major component. This might be due to the strong intermolecular charge-transfer interaction between PI and PI or PMR-15 and PMR-15 molecular chains being partly replaced by the weak intermolecular interaction between PI and PMR-15 in PMR-15/PI blends, resulting in some phenylene rings or imide groups in PIs and PMR-15 chains being able to participate in beta relaxation. However, this increment in beta relaxation magnitude can be reduced by heat treatment of the sample, as a result of phase separation. Hence, it is concluded that the beta relaxation magnitude is determined by the number of groups which can participate in relaxation per unit length, i.e. the magnitude of beta relaxation increases with decreasing interaction between the molecular chains. Phenol hydroxylation catalyzed by iron(II)-1,10-phenanthroline is investigated through kinetics, ESR, W-Vis as well as cyclic voltammogram studies. The optimum reaction conditions are obtained for diphenols production. Radical substitution mechanism is first proposed to explain the effects of pH, reaction medium and other factors on the phenol hydroxylation with H2O2 as oxidant, and found that the coexisting of iron(II)-1,10-phenanthroline and iron(III)-1,10-phenanthroline is the key for phenol hydroxylation to occur with H2O2 as oxygen donor.

Using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, stearic acid (SA) monolayers were deposited onto the surface of an iron (Fe) electrode to study the inhibition effect and the mechanism of SA in a neutral medium. Molecular orientation and the number of deposited monolayers of SA were shown to have marked effects on inhibition of Fe corrosion. The inhibition mechanism depended mainly on blocking.

Lectin is regarded as a potential molecule involved in immune recognition and phagocytosis through opsonization in crustacean. Knowledge on lectin at molecular level would help us to understand its regulation mechanism in crustacean immune system. A novel C-type lectin gene (Fclectin) was cloned from hemocytes of Chinese shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis by 3' and 5' rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) PCR. The full-length cDNA consists of 1482 bp with an 861 bp open reading frame, encoding 287 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence contains a putative signal peptide of 19 amino acids. It also contains two carbohydrate recognition domains/C-type lectin-like domains (CRD1 and CRD2), which share 78% identity with each other. CRD1 and CRD2 showed 34% and 30% identity with that of mannose-binding lectin from Japanese lamprey (Lethenteron japonicum), respectively. Both CRD1 and CRD2 of Fclectin have I I amino acids residues, which are relatively invariant in animals' C-type lectin CRDs. Five residues at Ca2+ binding site I are conserved in Fclectin. The potential Ca2+/carbohydrate-binding (site 2) motif QPD, E, NP (Gln-Pro-Asp, Glu, Asn-Pro) presented in the two CRDs of Fclectin may support its ability to bind galactose-type sugars. It could be deduced that Fclectin is a member of C-type lectin superfamily. Transcripts of Fclectin were found only in hemocytes by Northern blotting and RNA in situ hybridization. The variation of mRNA transcription level in hemocytes during artificial infection with bacteria and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) was quantitated by capillary electrophoresis after RT-PCR. An exploration of mRNA expression variation after LPS stimulation was carried out in primarily cultured hemocytes in vitro. Expression profiles of Fclectin gene were greatly modified after bacteria, LPS or WSSV challenge. The above-stated data can provide us clues to understand the probable role of C-type lectin in innate immunity of shrimp and would be helpful to shrimp disease control. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
