This article uses a qualitative approach to elicit the views of 31 professionals who provide services to vulnerable young men. The findings reveal six key themes following focus group interviews: (i) the importance of masculinity in explaining problematic behaviour; (ii) the misuse of alcohol and drugs; (iii) alienation and social isolation; (iv) concerns about suicide and self-harm; (v) the quality of existing services; and (vi) recommendations for changes to services. Service providers generally acknowledged the social context in explaining these behaviours and argued for enhanced services and a more developed skills base in working with vulnerable young men.

The gender based nature of suicide related behaviour is largely accepted.However, studies which report exclusively on female fatal suicides are rare.Here we demonstrate how female fatal suicide has effectively been ‘othered’ and appears ‘incidental’ in studies which compare female behaviour with that of their male counterparts. We highlight how recent studies of suicide have tended to be dominated by male only approaches,which increasingly link issues of masculinity with male death by suicide.Drawing on data collected from the GP and Coroner’s office, we then apply the Sociological Autopsy approach to a cohort of 78 deaths recorded as suicides in the UK between 2007 and 2009. By focusing on females in isolation from males, we demonstrate that as in male suicide only studies,it is similarly possible to draw out issues associated with the feminine identity which can be linked to death by suicide. We identify that bereavement, sexual violence and motherhood could all be linked to the lives and help-seeking of the females who died. In closing, we suggest are orientation towards sociological analytic approaches of female suicide may help to produce further reductions in the rate of female death by suicide.

This essay focuses on the lessons of Love’s Labour’s Lost’s pageboy-schoolboy-boy actor, Moth, to examine the production of boyhood in early modern culture. It reads Shakespeare’s boy character alongside John Marston’s schoolboy, Holofernes Pippo, in What You Will to investigate the ways in which school lessons might be deployed to produce aged and gendered identities that complicate traditional understandings of early modern masculinity. Reading the comic staging of lessons in these plays, it will suggest that while the educational system aimed to produce gendered subjects, early modern masculine identities exist as a range of categories on a developmental scale. It will propose that although Moth and Pippo comically expose the limits of many pedagogical methods to produce ‘men’, they demonstrate the ways in which these characters learn to be boys. Finally, it will consider the extent to which this production of early modern age and gender identity in the plays is paralleled by the historical boy actors performing these roles.

In Canada, it is young rural based men who are at the greatest risk for suicide. While there is no consensus on the reasons for this, evidence points to contextual social factors including isolation, lack of confidential services and pressure to uphold restrictive norms of rural masculinity. In this article we share findings drawn from an instrumental photo voice case study to distil factors contributing to the suicide of a young Canadian rural based man. Integrating photo voice methods and in-depth qualitative we conducted interviews with 7 family members and close friends of the deceased. The interviews and image data were analyzed using constant comparative methods to discern themes related to participants’ reflections on and perceptions about rural male suicide. Three inductively derived themes, “Missing the signs”, “Living up to his public image” and “Down in Rural Canada ” reflect the challenges that survivors and young rural men can experience in attempting to be comply with restrictive dominant ideals of masculinity. We conclude that community based suicide prevention efforts would benefit from gender-sensitive and place specific approaches to advancing men’s mental health by making tangibly available and affirming an array of masculinities to foster the well-being of young rural based men.

Background: Male suicide prevention strategies include diagnosis and effective management of men’s depression. Fundamental to suicide prevention efforts is public awareness, which in turn, is influenced by literacy levels about men’s depression and suicide.

Aim: To examine sex differences in mental health literacy with respect to men’s depression and suicide among a cohort of Canadian respondents.

Methods: 901 English-speaking Canadian men and women completed online survey questionnaires to evaluate mental health literacy levels using 10-item D-Lit and 8-item LOSS questionnaires, which assess factual knowledge concerning men’s depression and suicide. Statistical tests (chi-square, z-test) were used to identify significant differences between sex sub-groups at 95% confidence.

Results: Overall, respondents correctly identified 67% of questions measuring literacy levels about male depression. Respondents’ male suicide literacy was significantly poorer at 53.7%. Misperceptions were especially evident in terms of differentiating men’s depressive symptoms from other mental illnesses,
estimating prevalence and identifying factors linked to male suicide. Significant sex differences highlighted that females had higher literacy levels than men in regard to male depression.

Conclusions: Implementing gender sensitive and specific programs to target and advance literacy levels about men’s depression may be key to ultimately reducing depression and suicide among men in Canada.

The chapter argues that language and cultural communication matter in a transnational world and that the transmission of prejudices against minorities has to be closely analysed while contextualising national histories with minorities. Looking at two spatial sites (Leeds and Warsaw) and analysing interview material that was drawn from a larger study, the authors discuss the way local people address difference particularly through the axes of gendered ethnicity (Muslim men) and gendered class (male underclass). It explores how the same categories of difference are discursively produced in Poland and the UK/ England; to what degree they differ or overlap.

Sidewalks are integral features of city centres. They provide the channels through which activities and interactions evolve and in turn these interactions cause the sidewalks to evolve. They help to articulate the builtform and open spaces in tying together. However, historically sidewalks have received less attention relative to urban squares and civic spaces. Owing to the concept of walkable cities, sidewalks are gaining importance. This paper provides a critical overview on the apparent ‘amnesia’ in urban design and planning theories and visits a popular sidewalk in Belfast city centre to examine the paradox and perspectives.

A presente dissertação assenta na análise comparativa da obra de Marcial e Juvenal e tem como principais objectivos evidenciar a natureza burlesca e satírica que lhes assiste, assim como a (a)temporalidade e o alcance pedagógico-didáctico que as suas palavras comportam. Neste sentido, a análise tomou como matéria a abordagem que ambos fazem de temáticas comuns, no âmbito da representação da sociedade imperial do século I d.C. O trabalho divide-se em duas partes: I. Contexto e Condicionalismos; II. A vida quotidiana em Roma. A primeira subdividida em dois capítulos: 1. O espírito burlesco e o espírito satírico; 2. Apologia pro opere suo, e a segunda em quatro: 3. Modus vivendi Romani: prazeres e distracções em Roma; 4. (A)masculinidade Romana; 5. A condição feminina e o seu lugar em Roma; 6. Clientelismo e patronato sob o olhar de Marcial e Juvenal. Depois de uma contextualização dos termos burlesco e satírico, fundamentalmente alicerçada no primitivo espírito romano, procedeu-se à abordagem dos condicionalismos culturais, sócio-políticos e bibliográficos que melhor contribuem para a compreensão das principais diferenças/semelhanças entre a natureza, as intenções, as estratégias discursivas e a projecção das obras em causa. Na segunda parte, a análise comparativa da representação que os autores fazem da vida quotidiana em Roma focou essencialmente quatro aspectos, abordados em capítulos distintos, conforme supra-enunciado: no primeiro, a visão global que os autores projectam de Roma, através da representação dos principais divertimentos e distracções que ocupam e agradam aos Romanos; no segundo, a moralidade/falsidade que assiste aos comportamentos masculinos; no terceiro, a invectiva à mulher e ao lugar que esta ocupa nas relações sociais, afectivas e sexuais; no quarto, a instituição patronatoclientelismo e os valores sociais e morais que a revestem. A partir desta análise atestam-se as afinidades e o alcance de um fim semelhante nas obras de Marcial e Juvenal, não obstante a natureza e as diferenças estruturais que lhes assistem. Desta dissertação constam também uma Introdução e uma Conclusão, uma Bibliografia, bem como um Índice geral e um Index auctorum et locorum latinorum.

It is now apparent that socio-cultural constructions of masculinity variously impact men’s experiences of their HIV positive status, yet how being a father can feature in this mix remains under-researched. This study employed in-depth semi-structured interviews and Foucauldian-informed discourse analysis to explore the accounts of six self-identifying heterosexual fathers (four black African migrants, two white European) who had been living with HIV from five to 24 years. While the HIV-related literature calls for the need to subvert ‘traditional’ expressions of masculinity as a means of promoting HIV prevention and HIV health, we argue that the lived experience for HIV positive men as fathers is more socially, discursively and thus more psychologically nuanced. We illustrate this by highlighting ways in which HIV positive men as fathers are not simply making sense of themselves as a HIV positive man for whom the modern (new) man and father positions are useful strategies for adapting to HIV and combating associated stigma. Discourses of modern and patriarchal fatherhoods, a gender-specific discourse of irresponsibility, and the neoliberal conflation of heath and self-responsibility are also at work in the sense making frames that HIV positive men, who are also fathers, can variously deploy. Our analysis shows how this discursive mix can underpin possibilities of often conflicted meaning and identity when living as a man and father with HIV in the UK, and specifically how discourses of fatherhood and HIV ‘positive’ health can complicate these men’s expressions and inhabitations of masculinity.

This paper addresses the question of totalising gender power relations that have led to and shaped the wars of the 1990s in Yugoslavia and the emerging ethno-national states on the ‘periphery’ of Europe. I argue that the same type of gender power relations continue to dominate the region, notably Serbia, and to perpetuate gender inequalities and gender based violence in its many everyday and structural forms, causing profound levels of human insecurity. My analysis aims to set in motion a debate on how to tackle these continuing gender inequalities and GBV in post-war societies. In so doing, I propose a shift from focusing on the hierarchy of victimisation that has characterised much of the feminist analyses, activism and scholarly work in relation to these (and other) conflicts, to a relational understanding of the gendered processes of victimisation in war and peace, that is - of both women and men. Such an approach holds a potential to undermine the power systems that engender these varied types of victimisation by ultimately reshaping the notions of masculinity and femininity, which are central to the gender power systems that generate gender unjust peace.

Este estudo tem como principal objetivo identificar e compreender quais os valores de masculinidade que são representados na publicidade impressa. Para levar este estudo a cabo foram analisados os anúncios contidos na revista impressa Men’s Health, na edição do mês de setembro, desde o ano de 2002 a 2012, num total de 174 anúncios. A escolha da revista Men’s Health prende-se com o facto de ser uma revista dirigida ao segmento masculino. Foram traçados objetivos para o estudo em que todos eles convergem para um ponto em comum: identificação e compreensão dos valores de masculinidade presentes na publicidade em revistas dirigidas ao segmento masculino. Após a construção de uma grelha de análise foi desenvolvida uma análise extensiva, realizada aos diferentes anúncios e uma análise semiótica para que desta forma possamos ter uma abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa. Por fim, na conclusão e discussão dos resultados identificámos os valores de masculinidade que mais se encontram presentes nos anúncios dirigidos ao segmento masculino e posicionamos esses valores num esquema com o objetivo de conseguirmos classificar a forma de masculinidade refletida nos anúncios.
