Looking for Richard e Shakespeare in love : Shakespeare pela ótica do cinema hollywoodiano pós-modernista

A presente dissertação aborda o diálogo intertextual interdisciplinar que os filmes cinematográficos Shakespeare in Love (John Madden, 1998) e Looking for Richard (Al Pacino,1996) estabelecem em relação ao conjunto da obra de William Shakespeare. A análise dos filmes demonstra que, tanto pela estruturação de suas narrativas quanto por suas posturas frente ao legado cultural shakespeariano e seu papel na cultura de massa contemporânea, tais filmes configuram-se como obras de arte pós-modernistas. Tendo por base abordagens culturais abrangentes do fenômeno pós-modernista, concluimos que Shakespeare in Love e Looking for Richard propõem um redimensionamento da obra canônica de Shakespeare e de seu legado cultural na contemporaneidade, recuperando seu forte apelo popular através do cinema de entretenimento hollywoodiano.

A simple demonstration of the existence of the jordan canonical form for any square matrix

All the demonstrations known to this author of the existence of the Jordan Canonical Form are somewhat complex - usually invoking the use of new spaces, and what not. These demonstrations are usually too difficult for an average Mathematics student to understand how he or she can obtain the Jordan Canonical Form for any square matrix. The method here proposed not only demonstrates the existence of such forms but, additionally, shows how to find them in a step by step manner. I do not claim that the following demonstration is in any way “elegant” (by the standards of elegance in fashion nowadays among mathematicians) but merely simple (undergraduate students taking a fist course in Matrix Algebra would understand how it works).

Systematic consideration of petiole anatomy of species of Echinodorus Richard (Alismataceae) from north-eastern Brazil

Petiole anatomy of the north-eastern Brazilian species Echinodorus glandulosus, E. palaefolius, E. pubescens, E subalatus, E lanceolatus and E paniculatus were examined. All species had petioles with an epidermis composed of tabular cells with thin walls. The chlorenchyma just below the epidermis alternates with collateral vascular bundles. The interior of the petiole is filled by aerenchyma with ample open spaces or lacunas. The lacunas are bridged at intervals by plates, or by diaphragm-like linkages. There are lactiferous ducts and groups of fibres throughout the entire length of the petiole, but more frequently in the chlorenchyma. Important taxonomic characteristics for the genus Echinodorus include the shape and outline of the petiole in transversal section, the presence of winged extensions, and the number of vascular bundle arcs. Exceptions occur in E. lanceolatus and E. paniculatus, whose petioles have similar anatomic patterns. A comparative chart of the petiole anatomic characteristics analyzed is presented. Chromosomal studies on five species of the genus Leptodactylus Fitzinger, 1826 (Amphibia, Anura) using differential staining

Cytogenetic studies were carried out on five species of Leptodactylus, namely L. fuscus, L, notoaktites, L. labyrinthicus, L. ocellatus, and L. podicipinus, after standard staining, Ag-NOR and C-banding as well as BrdU incorporation for three of them. The species had 2n = 22 chromosomes and two basic karyotype patterns. Chromosome 8 was a marker bearing a secondary constriction. In all species, this secondary constriction corresponded to the Ag-NOR site. The species had centromeric C-bands in all chromosomes of the complement, but some interstitial or telomeric bands seemed to differentiate some karyotypes, either at the species or the population level. In L. ocellatus, the C-banding pattern confirmed the occurrence of a heteromorphic pericentric inversion in chromosome 8 in specimens from one of the populations. The BrdU incorporation technique showed no detectable difference in the replication patterns of the major bands in the chromosomes of L. noroaktites, L. labyrinthicus, and L. ocellatus.

Etude du nerf phrenique chez le cobaye (Cavia porcellus, L., 1756)

The aim of the present study to ascertain the mode of origin of the phrenic nerve and to provide a morphological basis for experimental studies of this nerve in the guinea pig. In sketches made of the dissections, in 10 male and 10 female guinea pigs adults, the modes of origin of the phrenic roots were demonstrated to arise from the fourth to the seventh cervical nerves. Four types of origin could be distinguished. The phrenic nerve of the guinea pig has three or four roots.

Vertex operators and Jordan fields

The construction of Lie algebras in terms of Jordan algebra generators is discussed. The key to the construction is the triality relation already incorporated into matrix products. A generalisation to Kac-Moody algebras in terms of vertex operators is proposed and may provide a clue for the construction of new representations of Kac-Moody algebras in terms of Jordan fields. © 1988.

Symplectic bosons, Fermi fields and super Jordan algebras

A construction relating the structures of super Lie and super Jordan algebras is proposed. This may clarify the role played by field theoretical realizations of super Jordan algebras in constructing representations of super Kač-Moody algebras. The case of OSP(m, n) and super Clifford algebras involving independent Fermi fields and symplectic bosons is discussed in detail.
