Measurements in a mixed flow pump of non-dimensional specific speed k = 1.89[N-S = 100 r/min (metric)] are analysed to give loss distribution and local hydraulic efficiencies at different flowrates and values of tip clearance. Fairly close agreement is obtained between the relative flow angles leaving the blading as predicted by simple deviation and slip models and derived from the measurements. The head developed is broken up into two parts: that contributed by Coriolis action and that associated with blade circulation. It is suggested that lift coefficients based on blade circulation are of limited value in selecting blade profiles. The variation of pump efficiency with tip clearance is greater than that reported for centrifugal pumps.

In this paper, the flow due to a rotating disk non-symmetrically placed with respect to the height of the enclosing stationary cylinder is analyzed numerically. The full Navier-Stokes equations expressed in terms of stream function and vorticity are solved by successive over-relaxation for different disk radii, its distance from the bottom casing and rotational Reynolds numbers. It is observed that the flow pattern is strongly influenced by the size and the position of the disk. When the disk is very close to the top casing and small in radius, there are two regions of different scales and the vortices in the region of small scale are trapped between the disk and the top casing. Further, the variation of the moment coefficient is determined for different positions and sizes of the rotating disk. The calculations shows that the frictional torque increases rapidly, when the disk approaches the top casing. This finding is of importance for the design of vertical rotating disk reactors applied in chemical vapor deposition.

Numerical results are presented for the free-convection boundary-layer equations of the Ostwald de-Waele non-Newtonian power-law type fluids near a three-dimensional (3-D) stagnation point of attachment on an isothermal surface. The existence of dual solutions that are three-dimensional in nature have been verified by means of a numerical procedure. An asymptotic solution for very large Prandtl numbers has also been derived. Solutions are presented for a range of values of the geometric curvature parameter c, the power-law index n, and the Prandtl number Pr.

The effect of surface mass transfer on buoyancy induced flow in a variable porosity medium adjacent to a heated vertical plate is studied for high Rayleigh numbers. Similarity solutions are obtained within the frame work of boundary layer theory for a power law variation in surface temperature,T Wpropx lambda and surface injectionv Wpropx(lambda–1/2). The analysis incorporates the expression connecting porosity and permeability and also the expression connecting porosity and effective thermal diffusivity. The influence of thermal dispersion on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are also analysed in detail. The results of the present analysis document the fact that variable porosity enhances heat transfer rate and the magnitude of velocity near the wall. The governing equations are solved using an implicit finite difference scheme for both the Darcy flow model and Forchheimer flow model, the latter analysis being confined to an isothermal surface and an impermeable vertical plate. The influence of the intertial terms in the Forchheimer model is to decrease the heat transfer and flow rates and the influence of thermal dispersion is to increase the heat transfer rate.

A new design technique for an SVC-based power system damping controller has been proposed. The controller attempts to place all plant poles within a specified region on the s-plane to guarantee the desired closed loop performance. The use of Horowitz's quantitative feedback theory (QFT) permits the design of a 'fixed gain controller' that maintains its performance in spite of large variations in the plant parameters during its normal course of operation. The required controller parameters are arrived at by solving an optimization problem that incorporates the control specifications. The performance of this robust controller has been evaluated on a single machine infinite bus system equipped with a mid point SVC, and the results are shown to be consistent with the expected performance of the stabilizer. The unsteady three-dimensional stagnation point Bow of a viscoelastic fluid has been studied. Both nodal and saddle point regions of How have been considered. The unsteadiness in the Bow field is caused by the free stream velocity which varies arbitrarily with time. The governing boundary layer equations represented by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations have been solved numerically using a finite-difference scheme along with the quasilinearization technique in the nodal point region and a finite-difference scheme in combination with the parametric differentiation technique in the saddle point region. The skin friction coefficients for the viscoelastic fluid are found to be significantly less than those of the Newtonian fluid. The skin friction and heat transfer increase due to suction and reduce due to injection. The heat transfer at the wall increases with the Prandtl number. There is a flow reversal in the y-component of the velocity in the saddle point region. The absolute value of c (<<<0) for which reversal takes place is less than that of the Newtonian fluid. The use of delayed coefficient adaptation in the least mean square (LMS) algorithm has enabled the design of pipelined architectures for real-time transversal adaptive filtering. However, the convergence speed of this delayed LMS (DLMS) algorithm, when compared with that of the standard LMS algorithm, is degraded and worsens with increase in the adaptation delay. Existing pipelined DLMS architectures have large adaptation delay and hence degraded convergence speed. We in this paper, first present a pipelined DLMS architecture with minimal adaptation delay for any given sampling rate. The architecture is synthesized by using a number of function preserving transformations on the signal flow graph representation of the DLMS algorithm. With the use of carry-save arithmetic, the pipelined architecture can support high sampling rates, limited only by the delay of a full adder and a 2-to-1 multiplexer. In the second part of this paper, we extend the synthesis methodology described in the first part, to synthesize pipelined DLMS architectures whose power dissipation meets a specified budget. This low-power architecture exploits the parallelism in the DLMS algorithm to meet the required computational throughput. The architecture exhibits a novel tradeoff between algorithmic performance (convergence speed) and power dissipation. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights resented.

We report results of statistical and dynamic analysis of the serrated stress-time curves obtained from compressive constant strain-rate tests on two metallic glass samples with different ductility levels in an effort to extract hidden information in the seemingly irregular serrations. Two distinct types of dynamics are detected in these two alloy samples. The stress-strain curve corresponding to the less ductile Zr65Cu15Ni10Al10 alloy is shown to exhibit a finite correlation dimension and a positive Lyapunov exponent, suggesting that the underlying dynamics is chaotic. In contrast, for the more ductile Cu47.5Zr47.5Al5 alloy, the distributions of stress drop magnitudes and their time durations obey a power-law scaling reminiscent of a self-organized critical state. The exponents also satisfy the scaling relation compatible with self-organized criticality. Possible physical mechanisms contributing to the two distinct dynamic regimes are discussed by drawing on the analogy with the serrated yielding of crystalline samples. The analysis, together with some physical reasoning, suggests that plasticity in the less ductile sample can be attributed to stick-slip of a single shear band, while that of the more ductile sample could be attributed to the simultaneous nucleation of a large number of shear bands and their mutual interactions. Flows with velocity profiles very different from the parabolic velocity profile can occur in the entrance region of a tube as well as in tubes with converging/diverging cross-sections. In this paper, asymptotic and numerical studies are undertaken to analyse the temporal stability of such 'non-parabolic' flows in a flexible tube in the limit of high Reynolds numbers. Two specific cases are considered: (i) developing flow in a flexible tube; (ii) flow in a slightly converging flexible tube. Though the mean velocity profile contains both axial and radial components, the flow is assumed to be locally parallel in the stability analysis. The fluid is Newtonian and incompressible, while the flexible wall is modelled as a viscoelastic solid. A high Reynolds number asymptotic analysis shows that the non-parabolic velocity profiles can become unstable in the inviscid limit. This inviscid instability is qualitatively different from that observed in previous studies on the stability of parabolic flow in a flexible tube, and from the instability of developing flow in a rigid tube. The results of the asymptotic analysis are extended numerically to the moderate Reynolds number regime. The numerical results reveal that the developing flow could be unstable at much lower Reynolds numbers than the parabolic flow, and hence this instability can be important in destabilizing the fluid flow through flexible tubes at moderate and high Reynolds number. For flow in a slightly converging tube, even small deviations from the parabolic profile are found to be sufficient for the present instability mechanism to be operative. The dominant non-parallel effects are incorporated using an asymptotic analysis, and this indicates that non-parallel effects do not significantly affect the neutral stability curves. The viscosity of the wall medium is found to have a stabilizing effect on this instability.

Tensile tests in the temperature range 298 to 873 K have been performed on 2.25Cr-1Mo base metal and simulated heat affected zone (HAZ) structures of its weld joint, namely coarse grain bainite, fine grain bainite and intercritical structure. Tensile flow behaviour of all the microstructural conditions could be adequately described by the Hollomon equation (sigma = K-1 epsilon(n1)) at higher (> 623 K) temperatures. Deviation from the Hollomon equation was observed at low strains and lower (< 623 K) temperatures. The Ludwigson modification of Hollomon's equation, sigma = K-1 epsilon(n1) + exp (K-2 + n(2) epsilon), was found to describe the flow curve. In general, the flow parameters n(1), K-1, n(2) and K-2 were found to decrease with increase in temperature except in the intermediate temperature range (423 to 623 K). Peaks/plateaus were observed in their variation with temperature in the intermediate temperature range coinciding with the occurrence of serrated flow in the load-elongation curve. The n(1) Value increased and the K-1 value decreased with the type of microstructure in the order: coarse grain bainite, fine grain bainite, base metal and intercritical structure. The variation of nl with microstructure has been rationalized on the basis of mean free path (MFP) of dislocations which is directly related to the inter-particle spacing. Larger MFP of dislocations lead to higher strain hardening exponents n(1).

In this work we explore the application of wireless sensor technologies for the benefit of small and marginal farmers in semi-arid regions. The focus in this paper is to discuss the merits and demerits of data gathering & relay paradigms that collect localized data over a wide area. The data gathered includes soil moisture, temperature, pressure, rain data and humidity. The challenge to technology intervention comes mainly due to two reasons: (a) Farmers in general are interested in crop yield specific to their piece of land. This is because soil texture can vary rapidly over small regions. (b) Due to a high run-off, the soil moisture retention can vary from region to region depending on the topology of the farm. Both these reasons alter the needs drastically. Additionally, small and marginal farms can be sandwiched between rich farm lands. The village has very little access to grid power. Power cuts can extend up to 12 hours in a day and upto 3 or 4 days during some months in the year. In this paper, we discuss 3 technology paradigms for data relaying. These include Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and DTN (Delay and Disruption Tolerant Network) technologies. We detail the merits and demerits of each of these solutions and provide our final recommendations. The project site is a village called Chennakesavapura in the state of Karnataka, India.

Representatives of several Internet access providers have expressed their wish to see a substantial change in the pricing policies of the Internet. In particular, they would like to see content providers pay for use of the network, given the large amount of resources they use. This would be in clear violation of the network neutrality principle that had characterized the development of the wireline Internet. Our first goal in this paper is to propose and study possible ways of implementing such payments and of regulating their amount. We introduce a model that includes the internauts behavior, the utilities of the ISP and of the content providers, and the monetary flow that involves the internauts, the ISP and content provider, and in particular, the content providers revenues from advertisements. We consider various game models and study the resulting equilibrium; they are all combinations of a noncooperative game (in which the service and content providers determine how much they will charge the internauts) with a cooperative one - the content provider and the service provider bargain with each other over payments to one another. We include in our model a possible asymmetric bargaining power which is represented by a parameter (that varies between zero to one). We then extend our model to study the case of several content providers. We also provide a very brief study of the equilibria that arise when one of the content providers enters into an exclusive contract with the ISP.

Experimental study and optimization of Plasma Ac- tuators for Flow control in subsonic regime PRADEEP MOISE, JOSEPH MATHEW, KARTIK VENKATRAMAN, JOY THOMAS, Indian Institute of Science, FLOW CONTROL TEAM | The induced jet produced by a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) setup is capable of preventing °ow separation on airfoils at high angles of attack. The ef-fect of various parameters on the velocity of this induced jet was studied experimentally. The glow discharge was created at atmospheric con-ditions by using a high voltage RF power supply. Flow visualization, photographic studies of the plasma, and hot-wire measurements on the induced jet were performed. The parametric investigation of the charac- teristics of the plasma show that the width of the plasma in the uniform glow discharge regime was an indication of the velocity induced. It was observed that the spanwise and streamwise overlap of the two electrodes, dielectric thickness, voltage and frequency of the applied voltage are the major parameters that govern the velocity and the extent of plasma.e®ect of the optimized con¯guration on the performance characteristics of an airfoil was studied experimentally.

The deformation behavior of an FeAl alloy processed by hot extrusion of water atomized powder has been investigated. Compression tests are performed in the temperature range 1073–1423 K and in the strain rate range 0.001–100 s−1 up to a true plastic strain of 0.5. The flow stress has been found to be strongly dependent on temperature as well as strain rate. The stress exponent in the power law rate equation is estimated to be in the range 7.0–4.0, decreasing with temperature. The activation energy for plastic flow in the range 1073–1373 K varies from 430 kJ mol−1 at low stresses to 340 kJ mol−1 at high stresses. However, it is fairly independent of strain rate and strain. The activation area has similarly shown a stress dependence and lies in the range 160–45b2. At 1423 K and at strain rates lower than 0.1 s−1 a strain rate sensitivity of 0.3 is observed with an associated activation energy of 375 kJ mol−1. The plastic flow in the entire range of temperature and strain rate investigated appears to be controlled by a diffusion mechanism. The results have revealed that it is possible to process the alloy by superplastic forming in the range 1373–1423 K at strain rates lower than 0.1 s−1.

An unsteady flow and heat transfer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid over a rotating infinite disk in an otherwise ambient fluid are studied. The unsteadiness in the flow field is caused by the angular velocity of the disk which varies with time. The magnetic field is applied normal to the disk surface. The new self-similar solution of the Navier-Stokes and energy equations is obtained numerically. The solution obtained here is not only the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, but also of the boundary layer equations. Also, for a simple scaling factor, it represents the solution of the flow and heat transfer in the forward stagnation-point region of a rotating sphere or over a rotating cone. The asymptotic behaviour of the solution for a large magnetic field or for a large independent variable is also examined. The surface shear stresses in the radial and tangential directions and the surface heat transfer increase as the acceleration parameter increases. Also the surface shear stress in the radial direction and the surface heat transfer decrease with increasing magnetic field, but the surface shear stress in the tangential direction increases.
