The number of mammalian transcripts identified by full-length cDNA projects and genome sequencing projects is increasing remarkably. Clustering them into a strictly nonredundant and comprehensive set provides a platform for functional analysis of the transcriptome and proteome, but the quality of the clustering and predictive usefulness have previously required manual curation to identify truncated transcripts and inappropriate clustering of closely related sequences. A Representative Transcript and Protein Sets (RTPS) pipeline was previously designed to identify the nonredundant and comprehensive set of mouse transcripts based on clustering of a large mouse full-length cDNA set (FANTOM2). Here we propose an alternative method that is more robust, requires less manual curation, and is applicable to other organisms in addition to mouse. RTPSs of human, mouse, and rat have been produced by this method and used for validation. Their comprehensiveness and quality are discussed by comparison with other clustering approaches. The RTPSs are available at ftp://fantom2.gsc.riken.go.jp/RTPS/. (C). 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an overlapping generations model with physical and human capital and income inequality. It shows that inequality impedes output growth by directly harming capital accumulation and indirectly raising the ratio of physical to human capital. The convergence speed of output growth equals the lower of the convergence speeds of the relative capital ratio and inequality, and varies with initial states. Among economies with the same balanced growth rate but different initial income levels, the ranking of income can switch in favor of those starting from low inequality and a low ratio of physical to human capital, particularly if the growth rate converges slowly. The mapping and sequencing of the human genome has generated a large resource for answering questions about human disease. This achievement is akin in scientific importance to developing the periodic table of elements. Plastic surgery has always been at the frontier medical research. This resource will help us to improve our understanding on the many unknown physiological and pathogical conditions we deal with daily, such as wound heating keloid scar formation, Dupuytren's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, vascular malformation and carcinogenesis. We are primed in obtaining both disease and normal tissues to use this resource and applying it to clinical use. This review is about the human genome, the basis of gene expression profiling and how it will affect our clinical and research practices in the future and for those embarking on the use of this new technology as a research tool, we provide a brief insight on its limitations and pitfalls. The respective methaemoglobin forming and GSH depleting capabilities of monoacetyl dapsone hydroxylamine (MADDS-NHOH) and dapsone hydroxylamine (DDS-NHOH) were compared in human diabetic and non-diabetic erythrocytes in vitro with a view to select the most potent agent for future oxidative stress and antioxidant evaluation studies. Administration of both metabolites to non-diabetic erythrocytes over the 20 min period of the study resulted in significantly more methaemoglobin formation at all four time points compared with the diabetic erythrocytes (P<0.0001). At all four time points, significantly more methaemoglobin was formed in response to MADDS-NHOH in non-diabetic cells compared with the effects of DDS-NHOH on diabetic erythrocytes (P<0.0001). At the 5 and 10 min time points, significantly more methaemglobin was formed in non-diabetic cells in the presence of MADDS-NHOH compared with DDS-NHOH (P<0.05). At the 5 min time point only, significantly more methaemoglobin was formed in the presence of MADDS-NHOH in diabetic cells compared with that of DDS-NHOH (P<0.01). However, compared with diabetic control GSH levels, the presence of DDS-NHOH caused a significant depletion in GSH at 5, 10 and 20 min time points in diabetic cells (P<0.001). In addition, the presence of DDS-NHOH caused a significant reduction in GSH levels in diabetic cells in comparison with those of non-diabetics at the 5, 10 and 20 min, (P<0.005). DDS-NHOH was also associated with a significant depletion of GSH levels in diabetic cells compared with those of non-diabetic control erythrocytes (P<0.0001). The presence of MADDS-NHOH in diabetic erythrocytes led to a significant reduction in GSH levels at the 20 min time point compared with those of non-diabetics (P<0.001), but there were no significant differences at the 5, 10 and 15 min points. Due to its greater GSH-depleting action, DDS-NHOH will be selected for future use in the oxidative stress assessment in diabetic erythrocytes. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The protection of stateless persons has long been understood as a challenge for the international community, yet for many of the past sixty years a prioritised focus on refugees has dominated, indeed arguably eclipsed, the plight and protection needs of stateless persons. Guy Goodwin-Gill has long argued for a refocus of international attention and effort on the plight, predicament and protection needs of stateless persons. In a seminal contribution over two decades ago he observed that at that time, statelessness was perceived by many as a mere ‘technical problem,’ yet ‘statelessness is indeed a broad human rights issue, even as it retains a distinct technical dimension.’ In this contribution, we examine the challenge set by Goodwin-Gill for the international community, namely, the need for greater recognition and protection of stateless persons, in light of developments over the more than two decades that have passed since his incisive analysis. We celebrate the positive developments and identify areas of ongoing challenge. We focus on the key initiatives he identified as requiring attention, and assess progress that has been made in relation to each, while concentrating predominantly on the need for closer attention to the relevance of developments in human rights law.

A widely diffused, engaged approach understands human rights as an opportunity to enhance moral progress. Less visible has a critical realm of research that reveals the often ambiguous social life of human rights discourses. This article draws on a specific case study from the intricate issue of how activism for Arab-Palestinian Bedouin citizens in Southern Israel engages with the global human rights discourse. It follows the implications of mobilization, focusing on events related to a campaign against house demolitions in informal, unrecognised settlements. The case shows how human rights discourses tend to silence the agency of political subjects, victimizing and patronizing those who seek emancipation. The ethnographic insights emphasize the role of a range of carnivalesque and spontaneous acts ofresistance, which subvert the patronizing implications of the human rights language.
