Atrocities in theory and practice: An introduction

Classical counterinsurgency theory – written before the 19th century – has generally strongly opposed atrocities, as have theoreticians writing on how to conduct insurgencies. For a variety of reasons – ranging from pragmatic to religious or humanitarian – theoreticians of both groups have particularly argued for the lenient treatment of civilians associated with the enemy camp, although there is a marked pattern of exceptions, for example, where heretics or populations of cities refusing to surrender to besieging armies are concerned. And yet atrocities – defined here as acts of violence against the unarmed (non-combatants, or wounded or imprisoned enemy soldiers), or needlessly painful and/or humiliating treatment of enemy combatants, beyond any action needed to incapacitate or disarm them – occur frequently in small wars. Examples abound where these exhortations have been ignored, both by forces engaged in an insurgency and by forces trying to put down a rebellion. Why have so many atrocities been committed in war if so many arguments have been put forward against them? This is the basic puzzle for which the individual contributions to this special issue are seeking to find tentative answers, drawing on case studies.

Textual Differences in Game Reviews Written by Men and Women

The aim of this essay is to examine the differences in language use between the genders in game reviews, to find whether there are differences in the use of the language depending on gender. Both sexist language and technical aspects are examined, the technical aspects of writing have been chosen from previous research about gendered differences in writing. The reviews are randomly chosen but the games are selected. There is an equal amount of games with male and female main characters, and the number of reviews is chosen according to the number of reviews written by females, as there are fewer of them, and thus easier to find a matching number of reviews written by males rather than vice versa. The reviews are then examined to find sexist language and differences. This essay finds that there is sexist language in the writing of both genders, such as marked language, but only when the main character of the game is female. Both genders tend to focus on the appearance of female characters and the characteristics of male characters, but there is no known previous research about male and female game characters to compare these results to. However, the technical differences remain consistent with previous research on the same subject, such as female reviewers using more pronouns than male reviewers, and male reviewers using fewer verbs than female reviewers.

Standard model: An introduction

We present a primer on the Standard Model of the electroweak interaction. Emphasis is given to the historical aspects of the theory's formulation. The radiative corrections to the Standard Model are presented and its predictions for the electroweak parameters are compared with the precise experimental data obtained at the Z pole. Finally, we make some remarks on the perspectives for the discovery of the Higgs boson, the most important challenge of the Standard Model.

Postmortem imaging-guided biopsy as an adjuvant to minimally invasive autopsy with CT and postmortem angiography: a feasibility study

Although postmortem CT suffices for diagnosing most forms of traumatic death, the examination of natural death is, to date, very difficult and error prone. The introduction of postmortem angiography has led to improved radiologic diagnoses of natural deaths. Nevertheless, histologic changes to tissues, an important aspect in traditional examination procedures, remain obscure even with CT and CT angiography. For this reason, we examined the accuracy of a minimally invasive procedure (i.e., CT angiography combined with biopsy) in diagnosing major findings and the cause of death in natural deaths.

AN APPROACH TO THE CHARACTERIZATION OF FIBRONECTIN-INTERACTION WITH MAMMALIAN CELLS

Cell adhesion is a fundamentally important process which has been implicated in morphogenesis, metastasis and wound healing. Fibronectin (Fn), a large glycoprotein present in body fluids, the extracellular matrix, and on the cell surface, mediates adhesion of fibroblastic cells. To study the interaction of Fn with Chinese Hamster Cell (CHO) cell membranes, latex beads coated with H('3)-Fn (Fn-beads) were used as surface probes. Binding of Fn-beads was independent of temperature, divalent cations, and metabolic activity. Identification of fibronectin-receptors has been problematical. To study Fn binding components, Fn-beads were pre-incubated with purified glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and glycolipids. Among the GAGs tested, heparin and heparan sulfate blocked bead binding. Only sialylated glycolipids, GT(,1) and GD(,1) were inhibitory; however, neuraminidase treatment of cells had no effect. It was further shown that Fn-bead binding could be blocked by pre-treating cells with papain. Furthermore, papain digestion releases cellular material which blocks Fn-bead-cell binding. Beads coated with a fragment of Fn which binds to cells but not heparin (F105) were also blocked by soluble papain digests. It was observed that the ability of F105-beads to bind to CHO cells was dependent on surface charge as F105 on uncharged beads did not bind to cells; whereas, F105 on positive or negative beads displayed cell binding activity. The active component in the papain digests was apparently macromolecular (i.e. non-dialysable) and heat stable (i.e. 100(DEGREES)C for 15 min.). This suggested the inhibitory factor is more likely a glycopeptide, rather than a GAG or glycolipid. The findings of this research can be summarized as follows: (1) the expression of cell binding of Fn and Fn fragments can be modulated by the chemical nature of the surface used for adsorption; (2) factors can be released by proteolytic digestion which block Fn and Fn-fragment bead binding; and (3) since bead binding can be done under conditions which reflect initial Fn-cell interaction, it seems likely that the component(s) identified in this way may play a direct role in the recognition phases of cell adhesion to Fn. ^

An approach to probe some neural systems interaction by functional MRI at neural time scale down to milliseconds

In this paper, we demonstrate an approach by which some evoked neuronal events can be probed by functional MRI (fMRI) signal with temporal resolution at the time scale of tens of milliseconds. The approach is based on the close relationship between neuronal electrical events and fMRI signal that is experimentally demonstrated in concurrent fMRI and electroencephalographic (EEG) studies conducted in a rat model with forepaw electrical stimulation. We observed a refractory period of neuronal origin in a two-stimuli paradigm: the first stimulation pulse suppressed the evoked activity in both EEG and fMRI signal responding to the subsequent stimulus for a period of several hundred milliseconds. When there was an apparent site–site interaction detected in the evoked EEG signal induced by two stimuli that were primarily targeted to activate two different sites in the brain, fMRI also displayed signal amplitude modulation because of the interactive event. With visual stimulation using two short pulses in the human brain, a similar refractory phenomenon was observed in activated fMRI signals in the primary visual cortex. In addition, for interstimulus intervals shorter than the known latency time of the evoked potential induced by the first stimulus (≈100 ms) in the primary visual cortex of the human brain, the suppression was not present. Thus, by controlling the temporal relation of input tasks, it is possible to study temporal evolution of certain neural events at the time scale of their evoked electrical activity by noninvasive fMRI methodology.
