Arsenic accumulation in rice grain has been identified as a major problem in some regions of Asia. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of increased organic matter in the soil on the release of arsenic into soil pore water and accumulation of arsenic species within rice grain. It was observed that high concentrations of soil arsenic and organic matter caused a reduction in plant growth and delayed flowering time. Total grain arsenic accumulation was higher in the plants grown in high soil arsenic in combination with high organic matter, with an increase in the percentage of organic arsenic species observed. The results indicate that the application of organic matter should be done with caution in paddy soils which have high soil arsenic, as this may lead to an increase in accumulation of arsenic within rice grains. Results also confirm that flooding conditions substantially increase grain arsenic. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Selenium, an essential micronutrient for humans, is insufficient in dietary intake for millions of people worldwide. Rice as the most popular staple food in the world is one of the dominant selenium (Se) sources for people. The distribution and translocation of Se from soil to grain were investigated in a Se-rich environment in this study. The Se levels in soils ranged widely from 0.5 to 47.7 mg kg(-1). Selenium concentration in rice bran was 1.94 times higher than that in corresponding polished rice. The total Se concentrations in the rice fractions were in the following order: straw > bran > whole grain > polished rice > husk. Significant linear relationships between different rice fractions were observed with each other, and Se in the soil has a linear relationship with different rice fractions as well. Se concentration in rice can easily be predicted by soil Se concentrations or any rice fractions and vice versa according to their linear relationships. In all rice samples for Se speciation, SeMet was the major Se species, followed by MeSeCys and SeCys. The average percentage for SeMet (82.9%) and MeSeCys (6.2%) was similar in the range of total Se from 2.2 to 8.4 mg kg(-1) tested. The percentage of SeCys decreased from 6.3 to 2.8%, although its concentration elevated with the increase in total Se in rice. This could be due to the fact that SeCys is the precursor for the formation of other organic Se compounds. The information obtained may have considerable significance for assessing translocation and accumulation of Se in plant.

Porous titanium samples were manufactured using the 3D printing and sintering method in order to determine the effects of final sintering temperature on morphology and mechanical properties. Cylindrical samples were printed and split into groups according to a final sintering temperature (FST). Irregular geometry samples were also printed and split into groups according to their FST. The cylindrical samples were used to determine part shrinkage, in compressive tests to provide stress-strain data, in microCT scans to provide internal morphology data and for optical microscopy to determine surface morphology. All of the samples were used in microhardness testing to establish the hardness. Below 1100 C FST, shrinkage was in the region of 20% but increased to approximately 30% by a FST of 1300 C. Porosity varied from a maximum of approximately 65% at the surface to the region of 30% internally. Between 97 and 99% of the internal porosity is interconnected. Average pore size varied between 24 µm at the surface and 19 µm internally. Sample hardness increased to in excess of 300 HV0.05 with increasing FST while samples with an FST of below 1250 C produced an elastic-brittle stress/strain curve and samples above this displayed elastic-plastic behaviour. Yield strength increased significantly through the range of sintering temperatures while the Young's modulus remained fairly consistent. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Rice is comparatively efficient at assimilating inorganic arsenic (As i), a class-one, non-threshold carcinogen, into its grain, being the dominant source of this element to mankind. Here it was investigated how the total arsenic (Ast) and Asi content of Italian rice grain sourced from market outlets varied by geographical origin and type. Total Cr, Cd Se, Mg, K, Zn, Ni were also quantified. Ast concentration on a variety basis ranged from means of 0.18 mg kg-1 to 0.28 mg kg -1, and from 0.11 mg kg-1 to 0.28 mg kg-1 by production region. For Asi concentration, means ranged from 0.08 mg kg-1 to 0.11 mg kg-1 by variety and 0.10 mg kg -1 to 0.06 mg kg-1 by region. There was significant geographical variation for both Ast and Asi; total Se and Ni concentration; while the total concentration of Zn, Cr, Ni and K were strongly influenced by the type of rice.

A series of nanostructured Ni-Zn ferrites Ni1-xZnxFe2O4 (x=0, 0.5 and 1) with a grain size from 24 to 65 nm have been prepared with a sol-gel method. The effect of composition and sintering temperature on morphology, magnetic properties, Curie temperature, specific heating rate at 295 kHz and hysteresis loss have been studied. The highest coercivity of 50 and 40 Oe, were obtained for NiFe2O4 and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 samples with the grain size of 35 and 29 nm, respectively. The coercivity of Ni and Ni-Zn mixed ferrites decreased with temperature. The Bloch exponent was 1.5 for all samples. As the grain size increased, the Curie temperature of NiFe2O4 increased from 849 to 859 K. The highest saturation magnetization of 70 emu/g at 298 K and the highest specific heating rate of 1.6 K/s under radiofrequency heating at 295 kHz were observed over NiFe2O4 calcined at 1073 K. Both the magnitude of the hysteresis loss and the temperature dependence of the loss are influenced by the sintering temperature and composition.

Epitaxial tetragonal 425 and 611 nm thick Pb(ZrTi)O (PZT) films are deposited by pulsed laser deposition on SrRuO-coated (100) SrTiO 24° tilt angle bicrystal substrates to create a single PZT grain boundary with a well-defined orientation. On either side of the bicrystal boundary, the films show square hysteresis loops and have dielectric permittivities of 456 and 576, with loss tangents of 0.010 and 0.015, respectively. Using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), a decrease in the nonlinear piezoelectric response is observed in the vicinity (720-820 nm) of the grain boundary. This region represents the width over which the extrinsic contributions to the piezoelectric response (e.g., those associated with the domain density/configuration and/or the domain wall mobility) are influenced by the presence of the grain boundary. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images collected near and far from the grain boundary indicate a strong preference for (101)/(1-01) type domain walls at the grain boundary, whereas (011)/(01-1) and (101)/(1-01) are observed away from this region. It is proposed that the elastic strain field at the grain boundary interacts with the ferro-electric/elastic domain structure, stabilizing (101)/(1-01) rather than (011)/(01-1) type domain walls, which inhibits domain wall motion under applied field and decreases non-linearity. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Porous poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) scaffolds of 85 per cent and 90 per cent porosity are prepared using polymer sintering and porogen leaching method. Different weight fractions of 10 per cent, 30 per cent, and 50 per cent of hydroxyapatite (HA) are added to the PLA to control the acidity and degradation rate. The three-dimensional (3D) morphology and surface porosity are tested using micro-computer tomography (micro-CT), optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicate that the surface porosity does not change on the addition of HA. The micro-CT examinations show a slight decrease in the pore size and increase in the wall thickness accompanied by reduced anisotropy for the scaffolds containing HA. Scanning electron micrographs show detectable interconnected pores for the scaffold with pure PLA. Addition of the HA results in agglomeration of the HA particles and reduced leaching of the porogen. Compression tests of the scaffold identify three stages in the stress-strain curve. The addition of HA results in a reduction in the modulus of the scaffold at the first stage of elastic bending of the wall, but this is reversed for the second and third stages of collapse of the wall and densification in the compression tests. In the scaffolds with 85 per cent porosity, the addition of a high percentage of HA could result in 70 per cent decrease in stiffness in the first stage, 200 per cent increase in stiffness in the second stage, and 20 per cent increase in stiffness in the third stage. The results of these tests are compared with the Gibson cellular material model that is proposed for prediction of the behaviour of cellular material under compression. The pH and molecular weight changes are tracked for the scaffolds within a period of 35 days. The addition of HA keeps the pH in the alkaline region, which results in higher rate of degradation at an early period of observation, followed by a reduced rate of degradation later in the process. The final molecular weight is higher for the scaffolds with HA than for scaffolds of pure PLA. The manufactured scaffolds offer acceptable properties in terms of the pore size range and interconnectivity of the pores and porosity for non-load-bearing bone graft substitute; however, improvement to the mixing of the phases of PLA and HA is required to achieve better integrity of the composite scaffolds. © 2008 IMechE.

Life science research aims to continuously improve the quality and standard of human life. One of the major challenges in this area is to maintain food safety and security. A number of image processing techniques have been used to investigate the quality of food products. In this paper,we propose a new algorithm to effectively segment connected grains so that each of them can be inspected in a later processing stage. One family of the existing segmentation methods is based on the idea of watersheding, and it has shown promising results in practice. However, due to the over-segmentation issue, this technique has experienced poor performance in various applications, such as inhomogeneous background and connected targets. To solve this problem,we present a combination of two classical techniques to handle this issue. In the first step,a mean shift filter is used to eliminate the inhomogeneous background, where entropy is used to be a converging criterion. Secondly,a color gradient algorithm is used in order to detect the most significant edges, and a marked watershed transform is applied to segment cluttered objects out of the previous processing stages. The proposed framework is capable of compromising among execution time, usability, efficiency and segmentation outcome in analyzing ring die pellets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is effectiveness and robust.

In this study, ceria-yttria co-stabilized zirconia (CYSZ) free-standing coatings, deposited by air plasma spraying (APS), were isothermally annealed at 1315 °C in order to explore the effect of sintering on the microstructure and the mechanical properties (i.e., hardness and Young's modulus). To this aim, coating microstructure, before and after heat treatment, was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, and image analysis was carried out in order to estimate porosity fraction. Moreover, Vickers microindentation and depth-sensing nanoindentation tests were performed in order to study the evolution of hardness and Young's modulus as a function of annealing time. The results showed that thermal aging of CYSZ coatings leads to noticeable microstructural modifications. Indeed, the healing of finer pores, interlamellar, and intralamellar microcracks was observed. In particular, the porosity fraction decreased from ~10 to ~5% after 50 h at 1315 °C. However, the X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that high phase stability was achieved, as no phase decomposition occurred after thermal aging. In turn, both the hardness and Young's modulus increased, in particular, the increase in stiffness (with respect to "as produced" samples) was equal to ~25%, whereas the hardness increased to up to ~60%. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The surface roughness of nominally smooth and of randomly roughened thin silver films is characterized using scanning tunneling microscopy and the metal grain size is assessed using transmission electron microscopy. On each type of substrate used, glass or CaF2-roughened glass, the silver films are deposited either very slowly (approximately 0.15 nm s-1) or quite quickly (approximately 2.0 nm s-1). Only silver films deposited on CaF2-roughened glass yield measurable surface-enhanced Raman signals for benzoic acid; the enhancement is brought about by surface field amplification due to the excitation of delocalized surface-plasmon polaritons. However, the surface-enhanced Raman signals obtained from the slow-deposited silver films are significantly better (by about a factor of 3) than those obtained from the fast-deposited silver films on a given CaF2-roughened substrate. The explanation of this observation does not lie with different surface roughness; both types of film yield closely similar data on the scanning tunneling microscope. Rather, it is suggested that the relatively small grain size of the fast-deposited silver films leads to increased elastic scattering of surface-plasmon polaritons at the grain boundaries, with a consequent increase of internal damping. This results in a reduction of the scattered Raman signal.

Bonded-in rod connections in timber possess many desirable attributes in terms of efficiency, manufacture, performance, aesthetics and cost. In recent years research has been conducted on such connections using fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) as an alternative to steel. This research programme investigates the pull-out capacity of Basalt FRP rods bonded-in in low grade Irish Sitka Spruce. Embedded length is thought to be the most influential variable contributing to pull- out capacity of bonded-in rods after rod diameter. Previous work has established an optimum embedded length of 15 times the hole diameter. However, this work only considered the effects of axial stress on the bond using a pull-compression testing system which may have given an artificially high pull out capacity as bending effects were neglected. A hinge system was utilised that allows the effects of bending force to be taken in to consideration along with axial forces in a pull-out test. This paper describes an experimental programme where such pull-bending tests were carried out on samples constructed of 12mm diameter BFRP bars with a 2mm glueline thickness and embedded lengths between 80mm and 280mm bonded-in to low-grade timber with an epoxy resin. Nine repetitions of each were tested. A clear increase in pull-out strength was found with increasing embedded length.
