O efeito da insularidade reflecte-se no número limitado de espécies arbóreas naturais dos Açores. As mais comuns são a Morella faya (Faia-da-terra), Picconia azorica (Pau-branco), Laurus azorica (Louro), Juniperus brevifolia (Cedro-do-mato), Ilex perado subsp. azorica (Azevinho), Erica azorica (Urze) e Frangula azorica (Sanguinho). Pelo contrário, Prunus azorica (Ginjeira-brava) é actualmente muito rara e Taxus bacatta (Teixo) encontra-se à beira da extinção. Dependendo das condições ambientais, particularmente de temperatura, pluviosidade e exposição ao vento, encontramos diferentes espécies a dominar a copa da floresta. […].

Este trabalho apresenta aspectos epidemiológicos da leishmaniose tegumentar nos municípios de Pedro de Toledo e Miracatu, região do Vale do Ribeira, estado de São Paulo, referente ao período 1973-1984. Foi feita uma análise retrospectiva de 108 e 65 casos humanos, respectivamente, para os dois municípios acima. Outro estudo prospectivo foi realizado através do exame clínico e testes de Montenegro, imunofluorescência indireta (IF) e hemaglutinação passiva (HA). Duzentos e setenta e três pessoas foram examinadas, sendo que 22 tinham leishmaniose clínica; 10,2 e 12,8% foram soropositivos à IF e HA, respectivamente. O teste de Montenegro foi aplicado em 154 indivíduos residentes em Pedra do Largo, com prevalência de 25,5% de infecção humana. Destes, 5,8% eram crianças com idade entre 0 e 9 anos. A morbidade mostrou-se variável no tempo, manifestada sob a forma de surtos epidêmicos explosivos e sugerindo feição cíclica ainda mal definida. Notou-se tendência para incidência nula em período subseqüente a cada surto. O aspecto epidemiológico geral mostra uma leishmaniose tegumentar com baixa endemicidade. O padrão de transmissão pareceu não depender do contato do homem com a floresta e a infecção humana sem distinção entre crianças e adultos

Hydatid disease in tropical areas poses a serious diagnostic problem due to the high frequence of cross-reactivity with other endemic helminthic infections. The enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the double diffusion arc 5 showed respectively a sensitivity of 73% and 57% and a specificity of 84-95% and 100%. However, the specificity of ELISA was greatly increased by using ovine serum and phosphorylcholine in the diluent buffer. The hydatic antigen obtained from ovine cyst fluid showed three main protein bands of 64,58 and 30 KDa using SDS PAGE and immunoblotting. Sera from patients with onchocerciasis, cysticercosis, toxocariasis and Strongyloides infection cross-reacted with the 64 and 58 KDa bands by immunoblotting. However, none of the analyzed sera recognized the 30 KDa band, that seems to be specific in this assay. The immunoblotting showed a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 100% when used to recognize the 30 KDa band.

The hantavirus pulmonary syndrome was first recognized in cases that occurred in the U.S. in 1993, which served as an alert not only for American physicians but also for physicians in other countries for the identification of the disease. In the city of São Paulo, Brazil, 3 cases of the syndrome were recorded in 1993. The patients were young brothers residing in the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) region submitted to recent deforestation. Two of the patients died of acute respiratory insufficiency and the third recovered without sequelae. In the surviving patient the diagnosis was established by a laboratory criterion based on the detection of specific IgM and IgG class antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence. In the two patients who died, the diagnosis was confirmed by laboratory tests using immunoperoxidase technique for hantavirus in tissue, in histological lung and heart sections in one case, and by clinical and epidemiological data in the other

We report a case of tropical pyomyositis in a boy who presented with a severe febrile illness associated with diffuse erythema, and swelling in many areas of the body which revealed on operation extensive necrotic areas of various muscles that required repeated débridement. The patient gave a history of contact with dogs, and an ELISA test for Toxocara canis was positive. He also presented eosinophilia and high serum IgE levels. Staphylococcus aureus was the sole bacteria isolated from the muscles affected. We suggest that tropical pyomyositis may be caused by the presence of migrating larvae of this or other parasites in the muscles. The immunologic and structural alterations caused by the larvae, in the presence of concomitant bacteremia, would favour seeding of the bacteria and the development of pyomyositis.
