Lobster aquaculture development in Indonesia, Vietnam and Australia

This project will support the sustainable development of lobster farming in Indonesia to meet global demand for tropical lobsters at high prices (>$US60 /kg). It will also address sustainability issues for the lobster farming industry in Vietnam and provide verification of lobster growout at commercial scale in Australia. The project will adapt technologies developed in Vietnam and apply them in Indonesia to establish a village-based industry for impoverished coastal communities. The Australian component will assess land-based growout systems to prepare for the likely availability of hatchery-reared lobster seed. Hatchery technology is currently being commercialised in Queensland through a partnership between DEEDI and Lobster Harvest Pty Ltd.

Northern Grazing Systems Bioeconomic analysis and regional assessment

This project is part of the Northern Grazing Systems (NGS) projects which aim to increase adoption of innovative best-practice grazing management by beef producers throughout Queensland, Northern Territory and the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of Western Australia.

Developing improved grazing and related practices to assist beef producters

This project will identify and evaluate grazing management and related practices for beef enterprises in northern Australia that will assist them to build resilience and adapt to a changing and more variable climate. With input from scientists and experienced producers, the trade-offs or synergies between production, sustainability and profitability indicators associated with different management practices will be evaluated in the target regions, using a bio-economic modelling framework. The latter will account for region-specific, climate-change outlooks.

Smart sorbers - value adding spent litter fertiliser. A pilot trial

Currently spent litter is not a balanced fertiliser. This project is a first step in improving the ability to reduce environmental contamination and to more fully realise the full fertilizer and soil amendment value of this material.

Queensland sedimentation and evaporation pond system (SEPS) trial

The Sedimentation and Evaporation Pond System (SEPS) is a low-capital effluent management system based primarily on shallow pond sedimentation of effluent solids and annual evaporation of the liquid to retrieve dried solids.

Development of cattle production extension materials for use in destination mark

To collate support and extension materials to ensure the recipients of Australian cattle have, at least, a minimum understanding of animal husbandry. As the number of destination markets increases, the need will also increase to produce similar material relevant and locally sensitive for these new markets.

Characterising population structure and diversity of Australian Eimeria

Develop microsatellite markers to distinguish strains of Eimeria acervulina, E. brunetti and E. maxima. Conduct nationwide sampling of chicken faeces to build baseline of Eimeria population genetic diversity for 5 economically important speces (3 species above plus E. tenella and E. necatrix). Conduct focused local screening to assess temporal changes in populations historically sampled.

Optimise efficacy of broiler house treatments for the management of lesser mealworm

The Australian chicken meat industry requires effective agents for the management of lesser mealworm in broiler houses. The only two appropriate insecticides currently registered are cyfluthrin and spinosad, with gamma cyhalothrin being developed for registration. The industry requires the efficacy of cyfluthrin to be investigated, with progress and adoption of the latter two chemicals. Optimising the efficacy of each chemical and studying them singly and in rotation will, in addition to improving their efficacy, reduce overall insecticide use and improve their cost effectiveness.

Validation and development of PigBal model - Stage 2

The proposed project involves validate and upgrading the PigBal model to improve the accuracy of manure and GHG production predictions.

DEEDI Paddock Modelling Program

The project objective is to undertake paddock modelling across the Great Barrier Reef catchments to determine magnitude of sediment and particulate nutrient reductions from agricultural lands to GBR lagoon achieved over 5 years. Discussions, development and design of a plan (including a monitoring, evaluation, reporting and improvement plan) for GRASP paddock modelling will be undertaken to determine changes in water quality as a result of land management practices adopted by pastoralists. Biophysical outputs will be derived from range of land types, starting conditions and grazing management strategies. GRASP derived outputs will then be incorporated into water models to determine sediment and nutrient estimates for the catchments.

Meso-scale movement patterns of native fish

The Murray Darling Basin Commison sought information on the movement patterns of native fish in the Murray Darling River system in Queensland. Information is needed to determine daily movement patterns, movement direction and results of flow event analysis.
