A network of 25 sonic stage sensors were deployed in the Squaw Creek basin upstream from Ames Iowa to determine if the state-of-the-art distributed hydrological model CUENCAS can produce reliable information for all road crossings including those that cross small creeks draining basins as small as 1 sq. mile. A hydraulic model was implemented for the major tributaries of the Squaw Creek where IFC sonic instruments were deployed and it was coupled to CUENCAS to validate the predictions made at small tributaries in the basin. This study demonstrates that the predictions made by the hydrological model at internal locations in the basins are as accurate as the predictions made at the outlet of the basin. Final rating curves based on surveyed cross sections were developed for the 22 IFC-bridge sites that are currently operating, and routine forecast is provided at those locations (see IFIS). Rating curves were developed for 60 additional bridge locations in the basin, however, we do not use those rating curves for routine forecast because the lack of accuracy of LiDAR derived cross sections is not optimal. The results of our work form the basis for two papers that have been submitted for publication to the Journal of Hydrological Engineering. Peer review of our work will gives a strong footing to our ability to expand our results from the pilot Squaw Creek basin to all basins in Iowa.

Antiresorptive agents such as bisphosphonates induce a rapid increase of BMD during the 1st year of treatment and a partial maintenance of bone architecture. Trabecular Bone Score (TBS), a new grey-level texture measurement that can be extracted from the DXA image, correlates with 3D parameters of bone micro-architecture. Aim: To evaluate the longitudinal effect of antiresorptive agents on spine BMD and on site-matched spine microarchitecture as assessed by TBS. Methods: From the BMD database for Province of Manitoba, Canada, we selected women age >50 with paired baseline and follow up spine DXA examinations who had not received any prior HRT or other antiresorptive drug.Women were divided in two subgroups: (1) those not receiving any HRT or antiresorptive drug during follow up (=non-users) and (2) those receiving non-HRT antiresorptive drug during follow up (=users) with high adherence (medication possession ratio >75%) from a provincial pharmacy database system. Lumbar spine TBS was derived by the Bone Disease Unit, University of Lausanne, for each spine DXA examination using anonymized files (blinded from clinical parameters and outcomes). Effects of antiresorptive treatment for users and non-users on TBS and BMD at baseline and during mean 3.7 years follow-up were compared. Results were expressed % change per year. Results: 1150 non-users and 534 users met the inclusion criteria. At baseline, users and non-users had a mean age and BMI of [62.2±7.9 vs 66.1±8.0 years] and [26.3±4.7 vs 24.7±4.0 kg/m²] respectively. Antiresorptive drugs received by users were bisphosphonates (86%), raloxifene (10%) and calcitonin (4%). Significant differences in BMD change and TBS change were seen between users and nonusers during follow-up (p<0.0001). Significant decreases in mean BMD and TBS (−0.36± 0.05% per year; −0.31±0.06% per year) were seen for non-users compared with baseline (p<0.001). A significant increase in mean BMD was seen for users compared with baseline (+1.86±0.0% per year, p<0.0018). TBS of users also increased compared with baseline (+0.20±0.08% per year, p<0.001), but more slowly than BMD. Conclusion: We observed a significant increase in spine BMD and a positive maintenance of bone micro-architecture from TBS with antiresorptive treatment, whereas the treatment naïve group lost both density and micro-architecture. This phase of the research project involved two major efforts: (1) Complete the implementation of AEC-Sync (formerly known as Attolist) on the Iowa Falls Arch Bridge project and (2) develop a web-based project management system (WPMS) for projects under $10 million. For the first major effort, AEC-Sync was provided for the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) in a software as a service agreement, allowing the Iowa DOT to rapidly implement the solution with modest effort. During the 2010 fiscal year, the research team was able to help with the implementation process for the solution. The research team also collected feedback from the Broadway Viaduct project team members before the start of the project and implementation of the solution. For the 2011 fiscal year, the research team collected the post-project surveys from the Broadway Viaduct project members and compared them to the pre-project survey results. The result of the AEC-Sync implementation in the Broadway Viaduct project was a positive one. The project members were satisfied with the performance of AEC-Sync and how it facilitated document management and transparency. In addition, the research team distributed, collected, and analyzed the pre-project surveys for the Iowa Falls Arch Bridge project. During the 2012 fiscal year, the research team analyzed the post-project surveys for the Iowa Falls Arch Bridge project AEC-Sync implementation and found a positive outcome when compared to the pre-project surveys. The second major effort for this project involved the identification and implementation of a WPMS solution for smaller bridge and highway projects. During the 2011 fiscal year, Microsoft SharePoint was selected to be implemented on these smaller highway projects. In this year, workflows for the shop/working drawings for the smaller highway projects specified in Section 1105 of the Iowa DOT Specifications were developed. These workflows will serve as the guide for the development of the SharePoint pages. In order to implement the Microsoft SharePoint pages, the effort of an integrated team proved to be vital because it brought together the expertise required from researchers, programmers, and webpage developers to develop the SharePoint pages.

Contrairement aux animaux, les plantes sont des organismes sessiles qui ne possèdent pas de mécanismes de fuite quand les conditions environnementales ne sont plus optimales. Les plantes sont physiquement ancrées à l'endroit où elles ont germées et aux conditions environnementales qui parfois peuvent être extrêmes. Les possibilités d'acclimatation de différentes espèces, parfois même de groupes de plantes au sein d'une même espèce, peuvent varier mais repose sur une adaptation génétique de la plante. L'adaptation est un long processus qui repose sur l'apparition spontanée de mutations génétiques, leur mise à l'épreuve face aux conditions environnementales, et dans le cas où la mutation a un impact positif sur la survie dans cet habitat particulier, elle sera maintenue dans une population donnée de plantes. De telles populations, appelées écotypes, sont le matériel de départ pour la découverte de gènes qui induisent un bénéfice pour la plante dans un environnement donné. La plante la plus étudiée en biologie moléculaire est Arabidopsis thaliana, l'arabette des prés. Dans une étude précédente, les racines d'écotypes naturels d'Arabidopsis ont été comparées et un écotype, Uk-1, avait le système racinaire le plus particulier. Cet écotype possède des racines beaucoup plus courtes et plus ramifiées que tous les autres écotypes. Des analyses plus poussées ont montré qu'une seule mutation dans un gène était la cause de ce phénotype, le gène BREVIS RADIX (BRX), mot latin signifiant 'racine courte'. Bien que l'on connaisse le gène BRX, on connaît finalement peu de choses sur son importance adaptative. Dans cette étude, nous avons montré que la mutation dans le gène BRX rend la plante plus résistante aux sols acides. Dans l'optique de mieux comprendre cette valeur adaptative du mutant brx, nous avons analysé dans quels tissus le gène BRX jouait un rôle important. Nous avons pu mettre en évidence que BRX est important pour le développement du protophloème. Le protophloème est un élément du système vasculaire de la plante. En général, les plantes supérieures possèdent deux systèmes de transport à longue distance. L'un d'eux, appelé xylème, transporte l'eau et les nutriments absorbés du sol par les racines vers les feuilles. Les feuilles sont le siège du processus de photosynthèse au cours duquel sont produits des sucres qui devront être distribués partout dans les autres parties de la plante. Le tissu cellulaire chargé de livrer les produits de la photosynthèse, ainsi que les régulateurs de croissance, est le phloème. Ce dernier regroupe le métaphloème et le protophloème. Le protophloème est essentiel pour la livraison des sucres synthétisés ainsi que des signaux de croissance aux pointes des racines, centres organogéniques responsables de la production de nouvelles cellules durant la phase de croissance de la racine. La structure du protophloème peut être décrite comme des tubes continus, vides et résistants, faits de cellules spécialisées qui permettent un transport efficace et rapide. Nous avons montré que dans les mutants brx ces canaux de transports sont discontinus car certaines cellules n'ont pas terminé leur cycle de différenciation. Ces cellules obstruent le conduit ce qui fait que les sucres et les signaux de croissance, comme l'auxine, ne peuvent plus être transportés aux méristèmes. En conséquence, la prolifération de l'activité des méristèmes est compromise, ce qui explique les racines courtes. Au lieu d'être délivré aux méristèmes, l'auxine se concentre en amont des méristèmes où cela provoque l'apparition de nouvelles racines branchées et, très probablement, l'activation des pompes à protons. Sur des sols acides, la concentration en ion H+ est très élevée. Ces ions entrent dans les cellules de la racine par diffusion et perturbent notablement la croissance des racines et de la plante en général. Si les cellules de la racine possédaient des pompes à protons hyperactives, elles seraient capable d'évacuer le surplus d'ions H+ en dehors de la cellule, ce qui leur assurerait de meilleures chances de survie sur sols acides. De fait, le mutant brx est capable d'acidifier le milieu de culture dans lequel il est cultivé plus efficacement que la plante sauvage. Ce mutant est également capable de donner plus de progéniture sur ce type de milieu de croissance que les plantes sauvages. Finalement, nous avons trouvé d'autres mutants brx en milieu naturel poussant sur sols acides, ce qui suggère fortement que la mutation du gène BRX est une des causes de l'adaptation aux sols acides. -- Plants as sessile organisms have developed different mechanisms to cope with the complex environmental conditions in which they live. Adaptation is the process through which traits evolve by natural selection to functionally improve in a given environmental context. An adaptation to the environment is characterized by the genetic changes in the entire populations that have been fixed by natural selection over many generations. BREVIS RADIX (BRX) gene was found through natural Arabidopsis accessions screen and was characterized as a root growth regulator since loss-of-function mutants exhibit arrested post-embryonic primary root growth in addition to a more branched root system. Although brx loss-of-function causes a complete alteration in root architecture, BRX activity is only required in the root vasculature, in particular in protophloem cell file. Protophloem is a part of the phloem transport network and is responsible for delivery of photo-assimilates and growth regulators, coming from the shoot through mature phloem component - metaphloem, to the all plant primary meristems. In order to perform its function, protophloem is the first cell file to differentiate within the root meristem. During this process, protophloem cells undergo a partial programmed cell death, during which they build a thicker cell wall, degrade nucleus and tonoplast while plasma membrane stays functional. Interestingly, protophloem cells enter elongation process only after differentiation into sieve elements is completed. Here we show that brx mutants fail to differentiate protophloem cell file properly, a phenotype that can be distinguished by a presence of a "gap" cells, non-differentiated cells between two flanking differentiated cells. Discontinuity of protophloem differentiation in brx mutants is considered to be a consequence of local hyperactivity of CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION 45 (CLE45) - BARELY ANY MERISTEM 3 (BAM3) signaling module. Interestingly, a CLE45 activity, most probably at the level of receptor binding, can be modulated by apoplastic pH. Altogether, our results imply that the activity of proton pumps, expressed in non-differentiated cells of protophloem, must be maintained under certain threshold, otherwise CLE45-BAM3 signaling pathway will be stimulated and in turn protophloem will not differentiate. Based on vacuolar morphology, a premature cell wall acidification in brx mutants stochastically prevents the protophloem differentiation. Only after protophloem differentiates, proton pumps can be activated in order to acidify apoplast and to support enucleated protophloem multifold elongation driven by surrounding cells growth. Finally, the protophloem differentiation failure would result in an auxin "traffic jam" in the upper parts of the root, created from the phloem-transported auxin that cannot be efficiently delivered to the meristem. Physiologically, auxin "leakage" from the plant vasculature network could have various consequences, since auxin is involved in the regulation of almost every aspect of plant growth and development. Thus, given that auxin stimulates lateral roots initiation and growth, this scenario explains more branched brx root system. Nevertheless, auxin is considered to activate plasma membrane proton pumps. Along with this, it has been shown that brx mutants acidify media much more than the wild type plants do, a trait that was proposed as an adaptive feature of naturally occurring brx null alleles in Arabidopsis populations found on acidic soils. Additionally, in our study we found that most of accessions originally collected from acidic sampling sites exhibit hypersensitivity to CLE45 treatment. This implies that adaptation of plants to acidic soil involves a positive selection pressure against upstream negative regulators of CLE45-BAM3 signaling, such as BRX. Perspective analysis of these accessions would provide more profound understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying plant adaptation to acidic soils. All these results are suggesting that targeting of the factors that affect protophloem differentiation is a good strategy of natural selection to change the root architecture and to develop an adaptation to a certain environment. -- Les plantes comme organismes sessiles ont développé différents mécanismes pour s'adapter aux conditions environnementales complexes dans lesquelles elles vivent. L'adaptation est le processus par lequel des traits vont évoluer via la sélection naturelle vers une amélioration fonctionnelle dans un contexte environnemental donné. Une adaptation à l'environnement est caractérisée par des changements génétiques dans des populations entières qui ont été fixés par la sélection naturelle sur plusieurs générations. Le gène BREVIS RADIX (BRX) a été identifié dans le crible d'une collection d'accessions naturelles d'Arabidopsis et a été caractérisé comme un régulateur de la croissance racinaire étant donné que le mutant perte-de-fonction montre une croissance racinaire primaire arrêtée au stade post-embryonnaire et présente de plus un système racinaire plus ramifié que la plante sauvage. Bien que le mutant perte-de-fonction brx cause une altération complète de l'architecture racinaire, l'activité de BRX n'est requise que dans la vascularisation racinaire, en particulier au niveau du protophloème. Le protophloème est un composant du réseau de transport du phloème et est responsable du transit des dérivés de la photosynthèse ainsi que des régulateurs de croissances, venant de la partie aérienne par le phloème mature (métaphloème) vers tous les méristèmes primaires de la plante. Pour pouvoir réaliser sa fonction, le protophloème est la première file de cellules à se différencier à l'intérieur du méristème de la racine. Pendant ce processus, les cellules du protophloème subissent une mort cellulaire programmée partielle durant laquelle elles épaississent leur paroi cellulaire, dégradent le noyau et le tonoplaste tandis que la membrane plasmique demeure fonctionnelle. De manière intéressante, les cellules du protophloème entament le processus d'allongement seulement après que la différenciation en tubes criblés soit complète. Ce travail montre que le mutant brx est incapable de mener à bien la différenciation de la file de cellules du protophloème, phénotype qui peut être visualisé par la présence de cellules 'trous', de cellules non différenciées entourées de deux cellules différenciées. La discontinuité de la différenciation du phloème dans le mutant brx est considérée comme la conséquence de l'hyperactivité localisée du module de signalisation CLA VA TA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION 45 (CLE45) - BARELY ANY MERISTEM 3 (BAM3). De manière intéressante, l'activité de CLE45, très probablement au niveau de la liaison avec le récepteur, peut être modulé par le pH apoplastique. Pris ensemble, nos résultats impliquent que l'activité des pompes à protons, actives dans les cellules non différenciées du protophloème, doit être maintenue en dessous d'un certain seuil autrement la cascade de signalisation CLE45-BAM3 serait stimulée, en conséquence de quoi le protophloème ne pourrait se différencier. D'après la morphologie vacuolaire, une acidification prématurée de la paroi cellulaire dans le mutant brx empêche la différenciation du protophloème de manière stochastique. Une fois que le protophloème se différencie, les pompes à protons peuvent alors être activées afin d'acidifier l'apoplaste et ainsi faciliter l'allongement des cellules énuclées du protophloème, entraînées par la croissance des cellules environnantes. Finalement, la différenciation défectueuse du protophloème produit une accumulation d'auxine dans la partie supérieure de la racine car le phloème ne peut plus acheminer efficacement l'auxine au méristème. Physiologiquement, la 'fuite' d'auxine à partir du réseau vasculaire de la plante peut avoir des conséquences variées puisque l'auxine est impliquée dans la régulation de la majorité des aspects de la croissance et développement de la plante. Etant donné que l'auxine stimule l'initiation et développement des racines latérales, ce scénario pourrait expliquer le système racinaire plus ramifié du mutant brx. En plus, l'auxine est considérée comme un activateur des pompes à protons. Par ailleurs, nous avons montré que les mutants brx ont la capacité d'acidifier le milieu plus efficacement que les plantes sauvages, une caractéristique des populations sauvages <¥Arabidopsis poussant sur des sols acides et contenant les allèles délétés brx. De plus, dans nos résultats nous avons mis en évidence que la plupart des accessions collectées originellement sur des sites acidophiles montre une hypersensibilité au traitement par CLE45. Ceci implique que l'adaptation des plantes aux sols acides repose sur la pression de sélection positive à rencontre des régulateurs négatifs de CLE45- BAM3, situés en amont de la cascade, tel le produit du gène BRX. Les analyses de ces accessions pourraient aboutir à une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes moléculaires responsables de l'adaptation des plantes aux sols acides. Tous nos résultats suggèrent que le ciblage des facteurs affectant la différenciation du protophloème serait une stratégie gagnante dans la sélection naturelle pour changer l'architecture de la racine et ainsi s'adapter efficacement à un nouvel environnement.

quantiNemo is an individual-based, genetically explicit stochastic simulation program. It was developed to investigate the effects of selection, mutation, recombination and drift on quantitative traits with varying architectures in structured populations connected by migration and located in a heterogeneous habitat. quantiNemo is highly flexible at various levels: population, selection, trait(s) architecture, genetic map for QTL and/or markers, environment, demography, mating system, etc. quantiNemo is coded in C++ using an object-oriented approach and runs on any computer platform. Cognitive radio networks (CRN) sense spectrum occupancy and manage themselves to operate in unused bands without disturbing licensed users. The detection capability of a radio system can be enhanced if the sensing process is performed jointly by a group of nodes so that the effects of wireless fading and shadowing can be minimized. However, taking a collaborative approach poses new security threats to the system as nodes can report false sensing data to force a wrong decision. Providing security to the sensing process is also complex, as it usually involves introducing limitations to the CRN applications. The most common limitation is the need for a static trusted node that is able to authenticate and merge the reports of all CRN nodes. This paper overcomes this limitation by presenting a protocol that is suitable for fully distributed scenarios, where there is no static trusted node.

Cooperative transmission can be seen as a "virtual" MIMO system, where themultiple transmit antennas are in fact implemented distributed by the antennas both at the source and the relay terminal. Depending on the system design, diversity/multiplexing gainsare achievable. This design involves the definition of the type of retransmission (incrementalredundancy, repetition coding), the design of the distributed space-time codes, the errorcorrecting scheme, the operation of the relay (decode&forward or amplify&forward) and thenumber of antennas at each terminal. Proposed schemes are evaluated in different conditionsin combination with forward error correcting codes (FEC), both for linear and near-optimum(sphere decoder) receivers, for its possible implementation in downlink high speed packetservices of cellular networks. Results show the benefits of coded cooperation over directtransmission in terms of increased throughput. It is shown that multiplexing gains areobserved even if the mobile station features a single antenna, provided that cell wide reuse of the relay radio resource is possible.

The energy system of Russia is the world's fourth largest measured by installed power. The largest are that of the the United States of America, China and Japan. After 1990, the electricity consumption decreased as a result of the Russian industry crisis. The vivid economic growth during the latest few years explains the new increase in the demand for energy resources within the State. In 2005 the consumption of electricity achieved the maximum level of 1990 and continues to growth. In the 1980's, the renewal of power facilities was already very slow and practically stopped in the 1990's. At present, the energy system can be very much characterized as outdated, inefficient and uneconomic because of the old equipment, non-effective structure and large losses in the transmission lines. The aim of Russia's energy reform, which was started in 2001, is to achieve a market based energy policy by 2011. This would thus remove the significantly state-controlled monopoly in Russia's energy policy. The reform will stimulateto decrease losses, improve the energy system and employ energy-saving technologies. The Russian energy system today is still based on the use of fossil fuels, and it almost totally ignores the efficient use of renewable sources such as wind, solar, small hydro and biomass, despite of their significant resources in Russia. The main target of this project is to consider opportunities to apply renewable energy production in the North-West Federal Region of Russia to partly solve the above mentioned problems in the energy system.

Tapahtumankäsittelyä pidetään yleisesti eräänä luotettavan tietojenkäsittelyn perusvaatimuksena. Tapahtumalla tarkoitetaan operaatiosarjaa, jonka suoritusta voidaan pitää yhtenä loogisena toimenpiteenä. Tapahtumien suoritukselle on asetettu neljä perussääntöä, joista käytetään lyhennettä ACID. Hajautetuissa järjestelmissä tapahtumankäsittelyn tarve kasvaa entisestään, sillä toimenpiteiden onnistumista ei voida varmistaa pelkästään paikallisten menetelmien avulla. Hajautettua tapahtumankäsittelyä on yritetty standardoida useaan otteeseen, muttayrityksistä huolimatta siitä ei ole olemassa yleisesti hyväksyttyjä ja avoimia standardeja. Lähimpänä tällaisen standardin asemaa on todennäköisesti X/Open DTP-standardiperhe ja varsinkin siihen kuuluva XA-standardi. Tässä työssä on lisäksi tutkittu, kuinka Intellitel ONE-järjestelmän valmistajariippumatonta tietokanta-arkkitehtuuria tulisi kehittää, kun tavoitteena on mahdollistaa sen avulla suoritettavien tapahtumankäsittelyä vaativien sovellusten käyttäminen.

We propose a new approach and related indicators for globally distributed software support and development based on a 3-year process improvement project in a globally distributed engineering company. The company develops, delivers and supports a complex software system with tailored hardware components and unique end-customer installations. By applying the domain knowledge from operations management on lead time reduction and its multiple benefits to process performance, the workflows of globally distributed software development and multitier support processes were measured and monitored throughout the company. The results show that the global end-to-end process visibility and centrally managed reporting at all levels of the organization catalyzed a change process toward significantly better performance. Due to the new performance indicators based on lead times and their variation with fixed control procedures, the case company was able to report faster bug-fixing cycle times, improved response times and generally better customer satisfaction in its global operations. In all, lead times to implement new features and to respond to customer issues and requests were reduced by 50%.

Abstract The solvability of the problem of fair exchange in a synchronous system subject to Byzantine failures is investigated in this work. The fair exchange problem arises when a group of processes are required to exchange digital items in a fair manner, which means that either each process obtains the item it was expecting or no process obtains any information on, the inputs of others. After introducing a novel specification of fair exchange that clearly separates safety and liveness, we give an overview of the difficulty of solving such a problem in the context of a fully-connected topology. On one hand, we show that no solution to fair exchange exists in the absence of an identified process that every process can trust a priori; on the other, a well-known solution to fair exchange relying on a trusted third party is recalled. These two results lead us to complete our system model with a flexible representation of the notion of trust. We then show that fair exchange is solvable if and only if a connectivity condition, named the reachable majority condition, is satisfied. The necessity of the condition is proven by an impossibility result and its sufficiency by presenting a general solution to fair exchange relying on a set of trusted processes. The focus is then turned towards a specific network topology in order to provide a fully decentralized, yet realistic, solution to fair exchange. The general solution mentioned above is optimized by reducing the computational load assumed by trusted processes as far as possible. Accordingly, our fair exchange protocol relies on trusted tamperproof modules that have limited communication abilities and are only required in key steps of the algorithm. This modular solution is then implemented in the context of a pedagogical application developed for illustrating and apprehending the complexity of fair exchange. This application, which also includes the implementation of a wide range of Byzantine behaviors, allows executions of the algorithm to be set up and monitored through a graphical display. Surprisingly, some of our results on fair exchange seem contradictory with those found in the literature of secure multiparty computation, a problem from the field of modern cryptography, although the two problems have much in common. Both problems are closely related to the notion of trusted third party, but their approaches and descriptions differ greatly. By introducing a common specification framework, a comparison is proposed in order to clarify their differences and the possible origins of the confusion between them. This leads us to introduce the problem of generalized fair computation, a generalization of fair exchange. Finally, a solution to this new problem is given by generalizing our modular solution to fair exchange

This thesis examines the history and evolution of information system process innovation (ISPI) processes (adoption, adaptation, and unlearning) within the information system development (ISD) work in an internal information system (IS) department and in two IS software house organisations in Finland over a 43-year time-period. The study offers insights into influential actors and their dependencies in deciding over ISPIs. The research usesa qualitative research approach, and the research methodology involves the description of the ISPI processes, how the actors searched for ISPIs, and how the relationships between the actors changed over time. The existing theories were evaluated using the conceptual models of the ISPI processes based on the innovationliterature in the IS area. The main focus of the study was to observe changes in the main ISPI processes over time. The main contribution of the thesis is a new theory. The term theory should be understood as 1) a new conceptual framework of the ISPI processes, 2) new ISPI concepts and categories, and the relationships between the ISPI concepts inside the ISPI processes. The study gives a comprehensive and systematic study on the history and evolution of the ISPI processes; reveals the factors that affected ISPI adoption; studies ISPI knowledge acquisition, information transfer, and adaptation mechanisms; and reveals the mechanismsaffecting ISPI unlearning; changes in the ISPI processes; and diverse actors involved in the processes. The results show that both the internal IS department and the two IS software houses sought opportunities to improve their technical skills and career paths and this created an innovative culture. When new technology generations come to the market the platform systems need to be renewed, and therefore the organisations invest in ISPIs in cycles. The extent of internal learning and experiments was higher than the external knowledge acquisition. Until the outsourcing event (1984) the decision-making was centralised and the internalIS department was very influential over ISPIs. After outsourcing, decision-making became distributed between the two IS software houses, the IS client, and itsinternal IT department. The IS client wanted to assure that information systemswould serve the business of the company and thus wanted to co-operate closely with the software organisations.

Technological development brings more and more complex systems to the consumer markets. The time required for bringing a new product to market is crucial for the competitive edge of a company. Simulation is used as a tool to model these products and their operation before actual live systems are built. The complexity of these systems can easily require large amounts of memory and computing power. Distributed simulation can be used to meet these demands. Distributed simulation has its problems. Diworse, a distributed simulation environment, was used in this study to analyze the different factors that affect the time required for the simulation of a system. Examples of these factors are the simulation algorithm, communication protocols, partitioning of the problem, distributionof the problem, capabilities of the computing and communications equipment and the external load. Offices offer vast amounts of unused capabilities in the formof idle workstations. The use of this computing power for distributed simulation requires the simulation to adapt to a changing load situation. This requires all or part of the simulation work to be removed from a workstation when the owner wishes to use the workstation again. If load balancing is not performed, the simulation suffers from the workstation's reduced performance, which also hampers the owner's work. Operation of load balancing in Diworse is studied and it is shown to perform better than no load balancing, as well as which different approaches for load balancing are discussed.
