The conditions for the preparation of luminescent materials, consisting of Eu3+ ions entrapped in a titanium matrix, in the forma of a thin film, using the sol-gel process, are described. The films were obtained from sols prepared with TEOS and TEOT, in the presence of acetylacetone as the hidrolysis-retarding agent, using the dip-coating and spin-coating techniques. The influence of these techniques on the films based on titanium and silicon are presented. The Eu3+ was used as a luminescent probe. The films have been characterized by luminescence, reflection and transmittance. The thickness of the films could be related to the preparation procedure. Transparent thin films have been prepared by dip-coating technique.

The effect of synthetic zeolites on stabilizing Zn-contaminated soil using 0.01 mol L-1 CaCl2 leaching solution in batch experiments was investigated. The zeolites were synthesized from coal ash by hydrothermal treatment with alkaline solution. The additive enhanced the sorption capacity of the soil and reduced leaching. Zinc leaching was reduced by more than 80% using a minimum of 10% additive. The higher cation exchange capacity of the zeolite/soil mixtures and higher pH were responsible for stabilizing Zn in soil. The poly(2-aminobenzenesulfonic acid)-coated mercury thin-film electrode was used for the determination of zinc.

Copper and zinc are common elements in paint residues and can be toxic to estuarine organisms. This study aims to determine the labile dissolved and labile particulate fractions (LPFs) of copper and zinc in the estuarine waters of a shipyard in southern Brazil under different salinity levels and in different seasons. The labile dissolved fraction was determined using the diffusive gradient in thin-film (DGT) technique. The variations in DGT-Cu (0.22-1.05 µg L-1), DGT-Zn (0.54-18.39 µg L-1), LPF-Cu (1.22-3.77 µg g-1), and LPF-Zn (4.29-19.12 µg g-1) concentration were related to changes in their physico-chemical parameters and as a result of boat maintenance activities.

This article describes the development of a new catalytic reactor designed to operate with nanoparticle-embedded polymer thin films. Stabilization of metal nanoparticles in films that serve as catalysts in organic reactions is relatively new; therefore, the development of reactors to facilitate their use is necessary. We describe in detail the preparation of the GDCR reactor-type "dip catalyst" and its evaluation in the Suzuki - Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of phenylboronic acid and 4-bromoanisole catalyzed by palladium nanoparticle-embedded cellulose acetate thin film (CA/PD(0)). Compared with earlier prototypes, GDCR reactor showed excellent results when operating with CA/PD(0) thin films.

The use of MT-K10 Montmorillonite immobilized onto agarose was investigated in this work as an alternative binding phase in Diffusive Gradient in Thin Film (DGT) devices for the determination of metallic labile species. In addition, agarose itself was also used as the diffusive phase. The percentage of sorption of Zn2+, Cu2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and Ni2+ onto the binding phase was higher than 80% and the desorption process for all elements was also greater than 75%. Elution factors were determined experimentally, ranging from 0.74 for Zn2+ and 0.90 for Cr3+ and Pb2+. The accumulation of all species was linear with time, in agreement with the Fick's 1st law of diffusion. The deployment of the alternative devices in natural waters was compared to commercial devices. Labile concentrations determined by the alternative devices were slightly superior compared to results obtained with the deployment of original DGT devices due to the less restrictive pores of agarose.

Ceramics are widely used in industrial applications due to their advantageous thermal and mechanical stability. Corrosion of ceramics is a great problem resulting in significant costs. Coating is one method of reducing adversities of corrosion. There are several different thin film deposition processes available such as sol-gel, Physical and Chemical Vapour Deposition (PVD and CVD). One of the CVD processes, called Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) stands out for its excellent controllability, accuracy and wide process capability. The most commonly mentioned disadvantage of this method is its slowness which is partly compensated by its capability of processing large areas at once. Several factors affect the ALD process. Such factors include temperature, the grade of precursors, pulse-purge times and flux of precursors as well as the substrate used. Wrongly chosen process factors may cause loss of self-limiting growth and thus, non-uniformities in the deposited film. Porous substrates require longer pulse times than flat surfaces. The goal of this thesis was to examine the effects of ALD films on surface properties of a porous ceramic material. The analyses applied were for permeability, bubble point pressure and isoelectric point. In addition, effects of the films on corrosion resistance of the substrate in aqueous environment were investigated. After being exposured to different corrosive media the ceramics and liquid samples collected were analysed both mechanically and chemically. Visual and contentual differences between the exposed and coated ceramics versus the untreated and uncoated ones were analysed by scanning electron microscope. Two ALD film materials, dialuminium trioxide and titanium dioxide were deposited on the ceramic substrate using different pulse times. The results of both film materials indicated that surface properties of the ceramic material can be modified to some extent by the ALD method. The effect of the titanium oxide film on the corrosion resistance of the ceramic samples was observed to be fairly small regardless of the pulse time.

Pure and Fe(III)-doped TiO2 suspensions were prepared by the sol gel method with the use of titanium isopropoxide (Ti(OPri)4) as precursor material. The properties of doped materials were compared to TiO2 properties based on the characterization by thermal analysis (TG-DTA and DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry and spectroscopy measurements (FTIR). Both undoped and doped TiO2 suspensions were used to coat metallic substrate as a mean to make thin-film electrodes. Thermal treatment of the precursors at 400ºC for 2 h in air resulted in the formation of nanocrystalline anatase TiO2. The thin-film electrodes were tested with respect to their photocatalytic performance for degradation of a textile dye in aqueous solution. The plain TiO2 remains as the best catalyst at the conditions used in this report.

ALD:llä voidaan syntetisoida tarkasti nanomittakaavan heterogeenisiä katalyyttejä, joilla on korkea dispersio tukimateriaalin pinnalla. ALD:n avulla voidaan säästää katalyyttimateriaalia menettämättä katalyytin aktiivisuutta, mikä on tärkeää monien katalyyttisovellusten taloudellisuuden kannalta, esimerkiksi polttokennot. ALD soveltuu hyvin membraanien modifiointiin, koska kaasumaiset prekursorit leviävät tasaisesti membraanin huokosiin. Membraanien pinnoittamisella pyritään vaikuttamaan, selektiivisyyteen, hydrofiilisyyteen, liuotinkestävyyteen, huokoskokoon ja sen jakaumaan. Lisäksi membraaneja voidaan pinnoittaa katalyyttisillä ohutkalvoilla, mikä on tärkeää nanoreaktoreiden kehityksen kannalta. ALD:llä voidaan pinnoittaa esimerkiksi terästä, ja vähentää täten teräksen korroosiota. Puolijohtavia metallioksideja voidaan käyttää kaasunilmaisimina, joiden valmistuksessa ALD:n tarkkuudesta on suurta hyötyä.

In this thesis, the gas sensing properties of porous silicon-based thin-film optical filters are explored. The effects of surface chemistry on the adsorption and desorption of various gases are studied in detail. Special emphasis is placed on investigating thermal carbonization as a stabilization method for optical sensing applications. Moreover, the possibility of utilizing the increased electrical conductivity of thermally carbonized porous silicon for implementing a multiparametric gas sensor, which would enable simultaneous monitoring of electrical and optical parameters, is investigated. In addition, different porous silicon-based optical filter-structures are prepared, and their properties in sensing applications are evaluated and compared. First and foremost, thermal carbonization is established as a viable method to stabilize porous silicon optical filters for chemical sensing applications. Furthermore, a multiparametric sensor, which can be used for increasing selectivity in gas sensing, is also demonstrated. Methods to improve spectral quality in multistopband mesoporous silicon rugate filters are studied, and structural effects to gas sorption kinetics are evaluated. Finally, the stability of thermally carbonized optical filters in basic environments is found to be superior in comparison to other surface chemistries currently available for porous silicon. The results presented in this thesis are of particular interest for developing novel reliable sensing systems based on porous silicon, e.g., label-free optical biosensors.

In two-phase miniature and microchannel flows, the meniscus shape must be considered due to effects that are affected by condensation and/or evaporation and coupled with the transport phenomena in the thin film on the microchannel wall, when capillary forces drive the working fluid. This investigation presents an analytical model for microchannel condensers with a porous boundary, where capillary forces pump the fluid. Methanol was selected as the working fluid. Very low liquid Reynolds numbers were obtained (Re~6), but very high Nusselt numbers (Nu~150) could be found due to the channel size (1.5 mm) and the presence of the porous boundary. The meniscus calculation provided consistent results for the vapor interface temperature and pressure, as well as the meniscus curvature. The obtained results show that microchannel condensers with a porous boundary can be used for heat dissipation with reduced heat transfer area and very high heat dissipation capabilities.

The aim of this thesis was to study the surface modification of reverse osmosis membranes by surfactants and the effect of modification on rejection and flux. The surfactants included anionic and nonionic surfactants. The purpose of membrane modification was to improve pure water permeability with increasing salt rejection. The literature part of the study deals with the basic principles of reverse osmosis technology and factors affecting the membrane performance. Also the membrane surface modification by surfactants and their influence on membrane’s surface properties and efficiency (permeability and salt rejection) were discussed. In the experimental part of the thesis two thin-film composite membranes, Desal AG and LE-4040, were modified on-line with three different surfactants. The effects of process parameters (pressure, pH, and surfactant concentration) on surface modification were also examined. The characteristics of the modified membranes were determined by measuring the membranes’ contact angle and zeta potentials. The zeta potential and contact angle measurements indicate that the surfactants were adsorbed onto the both membranes. However, the adsorption did not effect on membrane’s pure water permeability and salt rejection. Thereby, the surface modification of the Desal AG and LE-4040 membranes by surfactants was not able to improve the membrane’s performance.

The etiology of functional dyspepsia is not known. The objective of the present study was to determine the characteristics of functional dyspepsia in Western Turkey. We divided 900 patients with functional dyspepsia into three subgroups according to symptoms: ulcer-like (UL), 321 (35.6%), motility disorder-like (ML), 281 (31.2%), and the combination (C) of these symptoms, 298 (33.1%). All patients were submitted to endoscopic evaluation, with two biopsies taken from the cardia and corpus, and four from the antrum of the stomach. All biopsy samples were studied for Helicobacter pylori (Hp) density, chronic inflammation, activity, intestinal metaplasia, atrophy, and the presence of lymphoid aggregates by histological examination. One antral biopsy was used for the rapid urease test. Tissue cagA status was determined by PCR from an antral biopsy specimen by a random sampling method. We also determined the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and gastrin by the same method. Data were analyzed statistically by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and by analysis of variance. Hp and cagA positivity was significantly higher in the UL subgroup than in the others. The patients in the ML subgroup had the lowest Hp and cagA positivity and Hp density. The ML subgroup also showed the lowest level of Hp-induced inflammation among all subgroups. The serum levels of TNF-alpha and gastrin did not reveal any difference between groups. Our findings show a poor association of Hp with the ML subgroup of functional dyspepsia, but a stronger association with the UL and C subgroups.

This work devotes to the theoretical investigations of spin-electromagnetic waves (SEW) propagating in a thin-film multiferroic structures that were composed of a slot-line and structures with several ferrite films. In contrast to earlier works, the spin-electromagnetic waves in the investigated structures are originated from two different electrodynamics coupling. The first one is coupling of the electromagnetic wave localized mainly in the slot-line with the spin wave excited mostly in the ferrite film. The second one is coupling of two spin waves in the different ferrite films separated by a thin ferroelectric film. For theoretical analysis of SEWs propagation in such kind of structures theories of their eigen-wave spectra were developed. Spectra of SEW in the investigated structures were calculated and analyzed. The range of electric and magnetic tunability of dispersion characteristic were investigated. Spectra of SEW in the investigated multiferroic structures are used for investigation of transfer function of periodic structures.

Thin-film photovoltaic solar cells based on the Cu(In1−xGax)Se2 (CIGS) alloys have attracted more and more attention due to their large optical absorption coefficient, long term stability, low cost, and high efficiency. Modern theoretical studies of this material with first-principles calculations can provide accurate description of the electronic structure and yield results in close agreement with experimental values, but takes a large amount of calculation time. In this work, we use first-principles calculations based on the computationally affordable meta- generalized gradient approximation of the density-functional theory to investigate electronic and structural properties of the CIGS alloys. We report on the simulation of the lattice parameters and band gaps, as a function of chemical composition. The obtained results were found to be in a good agreement with the available experimental data.
