This paper focuses on the problem of incomplete data in the applications of the circular cone-beam computed tomography. This problem is frequently encountered in medical imaging sciences and some other industrial imaging systems. For example, it is crucial when the high density region of objects can only be penetrated by X-rays in a limited angular range. As the projection data are only available in an angular range, the above mentioned incomplete data problem can be attributed to the limited angle problem, which is an ill-posed inverse problem. This paper reports a modified total variation minimisation method to reduce the data insufficiency in tomographic imaging. This proposed method is robust and efficient in the task of reconstruction by showing the convergence of the alternating minimisation method. The results demonstrate that this new reconstruction method brings reasonable performance. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A calixarene complex with tetragonal (Mn2Gd2III)-Gd-II tetranuclear units was synthesized in solvothermal conditions, where the addition of a small amount of water was crucial for the formation of the target compound. In the structure, two tail-to-tail p-tert-butylthiacalixarenes are located in a C-shaped mode with a dihedral angle of 14.29 degrees but not in the conventional antiparallel arrangement and form a sandwich-like subunit with an in-between Mn2Gd2 unit. Both calixarenes assume similar cone shapes of C-2v symmetry but are pinched to different extents.

Effects of organically modified montmorillonites (OMMTs) with different type and amount of modifiers on flame retardancy of polystyrene (PS) have been studied. The results from morphology analysis, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and cone calorimeter have showed different mechanisms for the flame retardancy of PS/OMMTs composites, depending on surface property of OMNTrs. One is the catalysis of acid sites formed on the surface of octadecylammonium modified MMT (c-MMT) via Hoffman decomposition on the carbonization of degradation products, which promotes the formation of clay-enriched char barrier.

Effects of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Ni2O3 on the flame retardancy of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) have been studied. A combination of MWCNTs and Ni2O3 showed a synergistic effect in improving the flame retardancy of LLDPE compared with LLDPE composites containing MWCNTs or Ni2O3 alone. As a result, the peak value of heat release rate measured by cone calorimeter was obviously decreased in the LLDPE/MWCNTs/Ni2O3 Composites. According to the results from rheological tests, carbonization experiments, and structural characterization of residual char, the improved flame retardancy was partially attributed to the formation of a networklike structure due to the good dispersion of MWCNTs in LLDPE matrix, and partially to the carbonization of degradation products of LLDPE catalyzed by Ni catalyst originated from Ni2O3, More importantly, both viscoelastic characteristics and catalytic carbonization behavior of LLDPE/MWCNTs/Ni2O3 composites acted in concert to result in a synergistic effect in improving the flame retardancy.

Five new compounds of sulfonylcalix[4]arenetetrasulfonate (SC4AS), [H7Na(H2O)(3)(SC4AS)(phen)(5)](H2O)(11.9) (1), [H6Mn(H2O)(4)(SC4AS)(phen)(5)] (H2O)(12.7) (2), [Cu-4(SC4AS) (phen)(6)] (H2O)(4.5) (3), {[Cu (2)(SC4AS) (bpy)(2)][Cu(bpy)(2)(H2O)](2)} (H2O)(6.6) (4), and {[Zn-2(SC4AS) (phen)(2)][Zn(phen)(2)(H2O)(2)](2)} (H2O)(7) (5) (where phen 1,10-phenanthroline and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and structurally determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The SC4AS ligand adopts partial cone conformation in compounds 1 and 2 and 1,2-alternate form in compounds 3-5. According to the structural analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we suggest that the metal can affect the conformation of SC4AS.

By introducing an effective electron injection layer (EIL) material, i.e., lead monoxide (PbO), combined with the optical design in device structure, a high efficiency inverted top-emitting organic light-emitting diode (ITOLED) with saturated and quite stable colors for different viewing angles is demonstrated. The green ITOLED based on 10-(2-benzothiazolyl)-1, 1, 7, 7-tetramethyl-2, 3, 6, 7-tetrahydro-1H, 5H, 11H-[1] benzopyrano [6, 7, 8-ij] quinolizin-11-one exhibits a maximum current efficiency of 33.8 cd/A and a maximum power efficiency of 16.6 lm/W, accompanied by a nearly Lambertian distribution as well as hardly detectable color variation in the 140 forward viewing cone. A detailed analysis on the role mechanism of PbO in electron injection demonstrates that the insertion of the PbO EIL significantly reduces operational voltage, thus greatly improving the device efficiency.

Two copper-organic framework supramolecular assemblies of p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene and 1,10-phenanthroline Cu-2[C12H8N2][C28H20S4O16][H2O](23.5) (1) and Cu-3[C12H8N2](3)[C28H19S4O16]Cl[H2O](17.6) (2) were obtained by pH-dependent synthesis at room temperature. Both structures show ID water-filled channels (rectangular shape in I and triangular in 2) with the solvent-accessible volume occupying 30.8% (1) and 24.2% (2) of the unit-cell volume, respectively. The calixarene molecules in both structures assume analogous cone shapes of C-2 nu symmetry instead of the conventional C-4 nu symmetry. Their connecting to different amounts of copper/phenanthroline cations leads to the formation of different structures.

The degradation and flame retardancy of polypropylene/organically modified montmorillonite (PP/OMMT) nanocomposite were studied by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and cone calorimeter. The catalysis of hydrogen proton containing montmorillonite (H-MMT) derived from thermal decomposition of (alkyl) ammonium in the OMMT on degradation of PP strongly influence carbonization behavior of PP and then flame retardancy. Bronsted acid sites on the H-MMT could catalyze degradation reaction of PP via cationic mechanism, which leads to the formation of char during combustion of PP via hydride transfer reaction. A continuous carbonaceous MMT-rich char on the surface of the burned residues, which work as a protective barrier to heat and mass transfer, results from the homogeneous dispersion of OMMT in the PP matrix and appropriate char produced.

A novel engineering thermoplastic, phenolphthalein poly (ether-ether-sulfone) (PES-C) was blended with a commercial thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP), Vectra A950, up to 30 weight percent of TLCP. A rheometrics dynamic spectrometer (RDS-I) and a CEAST capillary rheometer, a rheoscope 1000 were employed to investigate the melt rheology and extrusion behaviour at both the low and high shearing rates. The morphologies of the blends under different shearing were observed with a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and correlated to the observed rheology. The principal normal stress differences measured with cone-and-plate geometry give a temperature-independent correlation for both blend and PES-C when they are plotted against shear stress. But the extrudate swell of the blends showed a strong temperature dependence at each shear stress. The concentration dependence of extrudate swell shows a contrary behaviour to that of the inorganic filled system. A reasonable hypothesis based on the relaxation and disorientation of TLCP during flowing in the capillary and exiting was given to explain it. The melt fracture was checked after extrusion from capillary and was discussed.

Blends of HDPE in more LDPE, with appropriate heat treatment, produce a dispersion of separate entities of HDPE in a matrix of LDPE. The system offered an especially favourable means of studying the deformation of melt-crystallized lamellae. It has been found that sheaf-like spherulites are transformed under tensile deformation into hourglass shapes i.e. a double cone aligned along the drawing direction with origin in the center of the object. This is a consequence of different modes of deformation according to the relation of an individual lamella to the tensile axis. The work shows that the lamellae have not undergone melting and recrystallization in the deformation process at room temperature.

Chemorheology and corresponding models for an epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) system were investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a cone-and-plate rheometer. For this system, the reported four-parameter chemorheological model and modified WLF chemorheological model can only be used in an isothermal or nonisothermal process, respectively. In order to predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle actually used, a new model based on the combination of the four-parameter model and the modified WLF model was developed. The combined model can predict the resin viscosity variation during a stepwise temperature cure cycle more accurately than the above two models. In order to simplify the establishment of this model, a new five-parameter chemorheological model was then developed. The parameters in this five-parameter model can be determined through very few rheology and DSC experiments. This model is practicable to describe the resin viscosity variation for isothermal, nonisothermal, or stepwise temperature cure cycles accurately. The five-parameter chemorheological model has also successfully been used in the E-PEK systems with two other curing agents, i.e., the diamine curing agent with the addition of a boron trifluride monoethylamine (BF3-MEA) accelerator and an anhydride curing agent (hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride). The rheological properties and crystallization characteristics of low ethylene content poly propylene (EPM) with and without Yittrium oxide (Y2O3) as a filler was investigated by cone-plate viscometer and differential scanning calorimetry. Yittrium oxide had a profound effect on the viscosities of the systems. To determine the nonisothermal crystallization rate of the materials, a new estimation method was used. From the results, we can conclude that Y2O3 acts as a nucleating agent, which increased the crystallization rate of the EPM. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Laboratory studies have shown that Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) shrink if maintained in conditions of low food availability. Recent studies have also demonstrated that E. superba individuals may be shrinking in the field during winter. If krill shrink during the winter, conclusions reached by length-frequency analysis may be unreliable because smaller animals may not necessarily be younger animals. In this study, the correlation between the body-length and the crystalline cone number of the compound eye was examined. Samples collected in the late summer show an apparent linear relationship between crystalline cone number and body-length. From a laboratory population, it appears that when krill shrink the crystalline cone number remains relatively unchanged. If crystalline cone number is little affected by shrinking, then the crystalline cone number may be a more reliable indicator of age than body-length alone. The ratio of crystalline cone number to body-length offers a method for detecting the effect of shrinking in natural populations of krill. On the basis of the crystalline cone number count, it appears from a field collection in early spring that E. superba do shrink during winter.

Seismic While Drilling (SWD) is a new wellbore seismic technique. It uses the vibrations produced by a drill-bit while drilling as a downhole seismic energy source. The continuous signals generated by the drill bit are recorded by a pilot sensor attached to the top of the drill-string. Seismic wave receivers positioned in the earth near its surface receive the seismic waves both directly and reflection from the geologic formations. The pilot signal is cross-correlated with the receiver signals to compute travel-times of the arrivals (direct arrival and reflected arrival) and attenuate incoherent noise. No downhole intrusmentation is required to obtain the data and the data recording does not interfere with the drilling process. These characteristics offer a method by which borehole seismic data can be acquired, processed, and interpreted while drilling. As a Measure-While-Drill technique. SWD provides real-time seismic data for use at the well site . This can aid the engineer or driller by indicating the position of the drill-bit and providing a look at reflecting horizons yet to be encountered by the drill-bit. Furthermore, the ease with which surface receivers can be deployed makes multi-offset VSP economically feasible.
