The genus Intusatrium Durio & Manter, 1968 is redefined based on a re-examination of paratypes of the type-species, I. robustum Durio & Manter, 1968, and is considered monotypic with characteristic terminal genitalia: internal seminal vesicle elongate tubular, with rather thick wall, divided by slight change in wall thickness into longer proximal and shorter distal region; pars prostatica subcylindrical; ejaculatory duct relatively short, with wrinkled/wall. The genus Postlepidapedon Zdzitowiecki, 1993 is redefined and Intusatrium secundum Durio & Manter, 1968 is attributed to it as a new combination. Postlepidapedon secundum n. comb. is redescribed from a paratype and new material from Choerodon graphicus. P. spissum n. sp. from Choerodon venustus, C. cyanodus, C. fasciatus and C. schoenleinii is recognised on the basis of its thick-walled internal seminal vesicle. I! uberis n. sp. from Choerodon schoenleinii and C. venustus is distinguished by the shape and contents of the cirrus-sac with narrow, convoluted internal seminal vesicle, large vesicular pars prostatica and short, muscular ejaculatory duct. A new genus, Gibsonivermis, erected for Intusatrium berryi Gibson, 1987, is characterised by the elongate narrow cirrus-sac and a uroproct. G. berryi n. comb. is redescribed from Sillago ciliata, S. maculata and Sillago sp.

Background: Worldwide strategies have been conducted in order to guarantee longer periods of exclusive breastfeeding for most children, especially those from developing countries. The evaluation of infant feeding practices and the identification of weaning risk factors are essential for public health policy planning. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in Joinville, the biggest city of Santa Catarina State in the southern Brazilian region. The caregivers of children under 1 year of age were systematically selected for interview in previously drawn immunization units during the 2005 National Vaccination Campaign. A structured questionnaire was applied for collection of infant, maternal, and healthcare variables. A 24-hour food recall survey was included in order to evaluate infant feeding practices. Descriptive statistic analysis on breastfeeding prevalence and Poisson regression analysis of risk factors for discontinuing exclusive breastfeeding for infants up to 6 months of age were performed. Results: Caregivers of 1,470 infants were interviewed. The feeding inquiry showed an overall rate of breastfeeding of 72.5% and a frequency of exclusive breastfeeding of 43.7% and 53.9% among infants younger than 6 and 4 months of age, respectively. The findings associated with the interruption of exclusive breastfeeding for infants up to 6 months were: higher infant age (P < 0.001), pacifier use (P < 0.001), and lower maternal educational level (P = 0.013). Conclusions: In developing countries, specific strategies must be created for the delivery of information about breastfeeding and the effect of pacifier use, especially for less educated women.

Background. Fabry disease (FD) is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of -Galactosidase A (-Gal A). Fabry nephropathy typically progresses throughout the fifth decade to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), requiring hemodialysis and/or kidney transplantation. Objective. To estimate the prevalence of FD among ESRD males on hemodialysis treatment in Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. Methods. Screening for -Gal A activity was performed by a dried blood spot (normal reference value: 1.5 nmoles/hour/mL). Positive screening results were confirmed by plasma -Gal A activity assay (reference value: 3.3 nmoles/hour/mL). Results. Five hundred fifty-eight male patients on hemodialysis were evaluated. Of these, only two had low -Gal A activity and were diagnosed with Fabry disease (0.36%). One of these, age 42, had left ventricular hypertrophy and renal manifestations of Fabry disease without the classic symptoms. The other, age 46, had the classical manifestations of angiokeratomas, acroparesthesias, hypohidrosis, and ocular opacities. Conclusions. Although the prevalence of Fabry disease was very low in our study (0.36%), routine screening of male hemodialysis patients would enable earlier identification of many other affected relatives in their families who might benefit from specific clinical treatment.

Background. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the most common genetic nephropathies, affecting one in every 800-1000 individuals in the worldwide general population and 5-10% of hemodialysis patients. Little data concerning the prevalence of ADPKD in Brazil are available. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate both the frequency and clinical profile of ADPKD among hemodialysis patients in south of Brazil. Methods. This cross-sectional study consisted of patients from 24 hemodialysis centers. Patients were screened for ADPKD by clinical, laboratorial, and image examination in medical records. Results. Of 1326 patients on hemodialysis in the south of Brazil that composed this study, 99 (7.5%) had polycystic kidney as primary cause for chronic renal failure. Comparisons between ADPKD and non-ADPKD patients revealed no differences regarding mean age, gender, and ethnicity. Conclusions. Our data revealed that ADPKD is prevalent among patients on hemodialysis in the south of Brazil. In addition, the clinical profile of ADPKD is similar to reported data from North America and Europe, putatively due to the similar ethnic composition mainly based on European descents.

Background: Traffic accidents constitute the main cause of death in the first decades of life. Traumatic brain injury is the event most responsible for the severity of these accidents. The SBN started an educational program for the prevention of traffic accidents, adapted from the American model ""Think First"" to the Brazilian environment, since 1995, with special effort devoted to the prevention of TBI by using seat belts and motorcycle helmets. The objective of the present study was to set up a traffic accident prevention program based on the adapted Think First and to evaluate its impact by comparing epidemiological variables before and after the beginning of the program. Methods: The program was executed in Maringa city, from September 2004 to August 2005, with educational actions targeting the entire population, especially teenagers and young adults. The program was implemented by building a network of information facilitators and multipliers inside the organized civil society, with widespread population dissemination. To measure the impact of the program, a specific software was developed for the storage and processing of the epidemiological variables. Results: The results showed a reduction of trauma severity due to traffic accidents after the execution of the program, mainly TBI. Conclusions: The adapted Think First was systematically implemented and its impact measured for the first time in Brazil, revealing the usefulness of the program for reducing trauma and TBI severity in traffic accidents through public education and representing a standardized model of implementation in a developing country. This research explores the social distribution of food knowledge in Ribeirao Preto, a city in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Through an analysis of the distribution of individual expertise in regard to the cultural model of food along the dimensions of healthfulness, practicality, and prestige, this research demonstrates that knowledge of the cultural model of food is most strongly shared in the upper class of the city. Qualitative and quantitative ethnographic research suggests that the social patterning of health-related food knowledge in Ribeirao Preto may serve to maintain class distinction.

Susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been associated with immunologic, environmental, and genetic factors. To uncover a possible association between MBL2 gene polymorphisms and SLE, we analyzed functional polymorphisms in the promoter and first exon of the MBL2 gene in 134 Brazilian SLE patients and 101 healthy controls. Genotype and allele frequencies of MBL2 A/O polymorphism were significantly different between patients and controls, and the 0 allele was associated with an increased risk of SLE. An association between low mannose binding lectin (MBL) producer combined genotypes and increased risk for SLE was also reported. Furthermore, when stratifying SLE patients according to clinical and laboratory data, an association between the A/O genotype and nephritic disorders and between the X/Y genotype and antiphospholipid syndrome was evident. Combined genotypes responsible for low MBL production were more frequently observed in SLE patients with nephritis. Our results indicate MBL2 polymorphisms as possible risk factors for SLE development and disease-related clinical manifestations. (C) 2011 American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.
