Primary to secondary LOTE articulation: A local case in Australia

In this study of articulation issues related to languages other than English (LOTE), "articulation" is defined and the challenges surrounding it are overviewed. Data taken from an independent school's admission documents over a 4-year period provide insights and reveal trends concerning students' preferences for language study, LOTE study continuity, and reasons for LOTE selection. The data also provides an accounting of some multiple LOTE learning experiences. The analysis indicates that many students who begin a LOTE in the early grades are thwarted in becoming proficient, because (1) continuation in the language is impossible due to unavailability of instruction; (2) expanded learning is hampered by teachers' inability to deal with a range of learners, (3) extended learning is hampered by administrative decisions or policies, or (4) students lose interest in the first LOTE and switch to another. Finally, a call is made for data gathering and research in local contexts to gain a better understanding of LOTE articulation challenges at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Políticas para el aseguramiento de la calidad en la enseñanza obligatoria de España

La presente comunicación se enmarca en el proyecto de investigación “Evaluaciones nacionales e internacionales como política de mejora de la educación en España en el contexto Europeo” (referencia CEMU-2013-20); financiado en el marco de la segunda convocatoria competitiva de Proyectos de Investigación Multidisciplinares de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, aprobada por el Consejo de Gobierno del 8 de febrero de 2013. En este caso, el objetivo principal de la presente comunicación es presentar los sistemas de aseguramiento de la calidad que han implementado en tres Comunidades Autónomas (CCAA) de España: País Vasco, Andalucía y Madrid. En el marco del proyecto mencionado, denominamos políticas de aseguramiento de la calidad a aquellas prácticas, relativamente recientes, orientadas a generar conocimiento sobre el sistema educativo, en este caso, vinculado a la enseñanza obligatoria y acciones dirigidas a su mejora. Con mucha frecuencia, estas prácticas han terminado estando reducidas a evaluaciones externas centradas en el rendimiento de los estudiantes, sin ninguna o con escasas acciones posteriores. Por otra parte, estos sistemas de aseguramiento de la calidad han recibido diversas críticas, en gran parterelacionadas con su lógica original más próxima al mundo empresarial que al educativo. En este sentido, junto con dar a conocer, desde un punto de vista fundamentalmente descriptivo los sistemas de aseguramiento de la calidad de las cuatro CCAA mencionadas, se aborda la discusión centrada en los siguientes aspectos: ¿es posible hablar de sistemas de aseguramiento de la calidad? ¿qué concepciones de calidad subyacente predominan? ¿qué consecuencias tienen para las prácticas educativas?

Meeting the Health, Social Care and Welfare Services Information Needs of Older People

As Chairperson of the National Council on Ageing and Older People, it gives me great pleasure to introduce this report, Meeting the Health, Social Care and Welfare Services Information Needs of Older People in Ireland. The Council has asserted, in previous reports in the past, the need to improve information provision for older people in order to enable them to make informed decisions in relation to their health, social care and welfare services needs and preferences so that they can become partners in their own care. This is consistent with current policy initiatives intended to re-orientate services more towards the older person and to place him/her at the heart of service planning, delivery and evaluation. A Framework for Quality in Long-Term Residential Care for Older People in Ireland

The National Council on Ageing and Older People has long been concerned about the quality of long-term residential care for older people in Ireland. The Costs of Caring for People with Dementia and Related Cognitive Impairments

The National Council on Ageing and Older People has undertaken a programme of research into dementia in Ireland. An Action Plan for Dementia provided a framework for the provision and planning of services for people with dementia in Ireland The Costs of Caring for People with Dementia and Related Cognitive Impairments is a complementary report to the Action Plan but with a more quantitative focus. The role of carers is one that is often taken for granted and is seen by many as a free resource. Dr Oâ?TShea explores what caring for a person with dementia entails in terms of the carers time, finances and stress. Improving Quality of Life for Older People in Long-Stay Care Settings in Ireland

The quality of life of older people in all care settings is a primary concern of the National Council on Ageing and Older People (NCAOP); a concern echoed by the National Economic and Social Forum (NESF) in its recent report Care for Older Peoplein which it stated that â?~enhancing quality of life of older people in different settings should be a key policy priorityâ?T (NESF, 2005). Social Inclusion of Older People at Local Level:The Role and Contribution of the CDBs - Conference Proceedings

This is a publication of The National Council on Ageing and Older People The Conference took place on October 3, 2005 . It attracted almost 250 delegates from across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors, and from every county. The Conference provided the opportunity for delegates to focus on the issue of social inclusion of older people at local level and the challenges it presents. The Quality of Life of Older People with a Disability in Ireland For many years the National Council on Ageing and Older People (NCAOP) has advocated the importance of meaningful consultation with older people in order to inform public policy and facilitate the development of services to meet their needs. This research study was commissioned to present a picture of quality of life in older age for people with a disability in Ireland and was grounded in consultation with them. End-of-Life Care for Older People in Acute and Long-Stay Care Settings in Ireland

The National Council on Ageing and Older People (NCAOP) and the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) are pleased to present this report, End-of-Life Care for Older People in Acute and Long-Stay Care Settings in Ireland. The report details the results of research that focuses, for the first time in Ireland, on the quality oflife and quality of care at the end-of-life for older people in various care settings including acute hospitals, public extended care units, private nursing homes, voluntary nursing homes and welfare homes. The report provides a new model for care at the end-of-life which goes beyond specialist palliative care provision to embrace a compassionate approach that supports older people who are living with, or dying from, progressive, chronic and life-threatening conditions, and attends to all their needs: physical, psychological,social and spiritual. Towards an Age Friendly Society in Ireland: Conference Proceedings

Criteria for establishing shielding of multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) rooms.

The aim of this work is to compare two methods used for determining the proper shielding of computed tomography (CT) rooms while considering recent technological advances in CT scanners. The approaches of the German Institute for Standardisation and the US National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements were compared and a series of radiation measurements were performed in several CT rooms at the Lausanne University Hospital. The following three-step procedure is proposed for assuring sufficient shielding of rooms hosting new CT units with spiral mode acquisition and various X-ray beam collimation widths: (1) calculate the ambient equivalent dose for a representative average weekly dose length product at the position where shielding is required; (2) from the maximum permissible weekly dose at the location of interest, calculate the transmission factor F that must be taken to ensure proper shielding and (3) convert the transmission factor into a thickness of lead shielding. A similar approach could be adopted to use when designing shielding for fluoroscopy rooms, where the basic quantity would be the dose area product instead of the load of current (milliampere-minute).
