In much the same way we consider our house or car 'mine', we may also consider facets of employment as a possession. Psychological ownership is the state ascribed to such feelings of possession in the absence of any formal or legal claims of ownership. In the present context, the target of such feelings of ownership is directed towards the employing organisation, or individual employee's specific job. TJie aim of this research is to extend previous propositions of ownership feelings to encompass related work attitudes and behavioural outcomes of psychological ownership in an organisational context. As a result, a theory of psychological ownership in organisations is presented encompassing antecedents, consequences, and the related work attitudes of job satisfaction and organisational commitment. Questionnaire data from 68 employees and their managers was used to test hypotheses derived from the proposed theory. Results revealed that psychological ownership predicted the work attitudes of job satisfaction and organisational commitment, and mediated the relationship between autonomy and these work attitudes. Both organisation- based and job-based psychological ownership were found to be distinct work attitudes, distinguishable from job satisfaction and organisational commitment. There was no support, however, for a direct or mediated relationship between psychological ownership and behavioural outcomes, including in-role behaviour, and helping and voice extra-role behaviours. These findings have considerable theoretical and empirical implications for the field of psychological ownership, and offer support for psychological ownership as a real and important work attitude.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a subtropical to tropical fruit of high commercial value in international trade. However, harvested litchi fruit rapidly lose their bright red skin colour. Peel browning of harvested litchi fruit has largely been attributed to rapid degradation of red anthocyanin pigments. This process is associated with enzymatic oxidation of phenolics by polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and/or peroxidase (POD). PRO and POD from litchi pericarp cannot directly oxidize anthocyanins. Moreover, PPO substrates in the pericarp are not well characterised. Consequently, the roles of PPO and POD in litchi browning require further investigation. Recently, an anthocyanase catalysing the hydrolysis of sugar moieties from anthocyanin to anthocyanidin has been identified in litchi peel for the first time. Thus, litchi enzymatic browning may involve an anthocyanase-anthocyanin-phenolic-PPO reaction. Current research focus is on characterising the properties of the anthocyanase involved in anthocyanin degradation. Associated emphasis is on maintenance of membrane functions in relation to loss of compartmentation between litchi peel oxidase enzymes and their substrates. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Although the n-back task has been widely applied to neuroimagery investigations of working memory (WM), the role of practice effects on behavioural performance of this task has not yet been investigated. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of task complexity and familiarity on the n-back task. Seventy-seven participants (39 male, 38 female) completed a visuospatial n-back task four times, twice in two testing sessions separated by a week. Participants were required to remember either the first, second or third (n-back) most recent letter positions in a continuous sequence and to indicate whether the current item matched or did not match the remembered position. A control task, with no working memory requirements required participants to match to a predetermined stimulus position. In both testing sessions, reaction time (RT) and error rate increased with increasing WM load. An exponential slope for RTs in the first session indicated dual-task interference at the 3-back level. However, a linear slope in the second session indicated a reduction of dual-task interference. Attenuation of interference in the second session suggested a reduction in executive demands of the task with practice. This suggested that practice effects occur within the n-back ask and need to be controlled for in future neuroimagery research using the task.

Theoretical analyses of air traffic complexity were carried out using the Method for the Analysis of Relational Complexity. Twenty-two air traffic controllers examined static air traffic displays and were required to detect and resolve conflicts. Objective measures of performance included conflict detection time and accuracy. Subjective perceptions of mental workload were assessed by a complexity-sorting task and subjective ratings of the difficulty of different aspects of the task. A metric quantifying the complexity of pair-wise relations among aircraft was able to account for a substantial portion of the variance in the perceived complexity and difficulty of conflict detection problems, as well as reaction time. Other variables that influenced performance included the mean minimum separation between aircraft pairs and the amount of time that aircraft spent in conflict.

This paper examines the definitions and conceptual foundations of crises and distinguishes between crises and disasters. It takes a systems view of these concepts and uses the perspective of systems as organizational networks to examine implications for tourism managers. A tourism destination is perceived as consisting of a network of interacting organizations. This perspective questions the boundaries that should be used to study crisis and disasters. The paper also discusses the possibility of a crisis having a positive outcome for a destination.

The present study aimed to trial the effectiveness of 10 newly developed brief vignettes portraying typical interactions between staff and people with intellectual disabilities in residential care settings to assess the knowledge and understanding of staff about choice diversity, pre- and post-attendance at a staff training workshop. A total of 29 residential staff completed the Vignette Rating Scale and a knowledge questionnaire pre- and post-training. A t- test conducted on the vignettes revealed that respondents identified fewer choices in the post-test vignettes compared to the pre-test vignettes. Results showed no significant difference between the pre- and post-test data on the knowledge questionnaire. The questionnaire revealed a high level of knowledge about choice prior to and following training. The vignettes, however, proved effective in measuring changes in awareness of choice diversity among residential staff following participation in a staff training workshop.
