This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Oversigtskaart over grundvandstandens höjde paa Kjöbenhavns : og Frederiksbergs grund ved laveste iagttagne höjde den 16 de Juli 1883. It was published by Hoffensberg & Trap[s] Establ. in 1883. Scale [ca. 1:5,022]. Covers Copenhagen, Denmark. Map in Danish. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the European Datum 1950, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 33N projected coordinate system. All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as groundwater levels, roads, railroads and stations, drainage, built-up areas and selected buildings, fortification, docks, wharves, parks, and more. Relief shown by contours and spot heights. Depths shown by soundings. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from the Harvard Map Collection. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features. The selection represents a range of originators, ground condition dates, scales, and map purposes.

In typical theoretical or experimental studies of heat migration in discrete fractures, conduction and thermal dispersion are commonly neglected from the fracture heat transport equation, assuming heat conduction into the matrix is predominant. In this study analytical and numerical models are used to investigate the significance of conduction and thermal dispersion in the plane of the fracture for a point and line sources geometries. The analytical models account for advective, conductive and dispersive heat transport in both the longitudinal and transverse directions in the fracture. The heat transport in the fracture is coupled with a matrix equation in which heat is conducted in the direction perpendicular to the fracture. In the numerical model, the governing heat transport processes are the same as the analytical models; however, the matrix conduction is considered in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Firstly, we demonstrate that longitudinal conduction and dispersion are critical processes that affect heat transport in fractured rock environments, especially for small apertures (eg. 100 μm or less), high flow rate conditions (eg. velocity greater than 50 m/day) and early time (eg. less than 10 days). Secondly, transverse thermal dispersion in the fracture plane is also observed to be an important transport process leading to retardation of the migrating heat front particularly at late time (eg. after 40 days of hot water injection). Solutions which neglect dispersion in the transverse direction underestimate the locations of heat fronts at late time. Finally, this study also suggests that the geometry of the heat sources has significant effects on the heat transport in the system. For example, the effects of dispersion in the fracture are observed to decrease when the width of the heat source expands.

Oxygen and hydrogen isotope analyses of rainfall samples collected on the eastern Batinah coastal plain of northern Oman between 1995 and 1998 indicate two different principal water vapor sources for precipitation in the area: a northern, Mediterranean source and a southern, Indian Ocean source. As a result, two new local meteoric water lines were defined for the study area. Isotopic analyses of groundwater samples from over 200 springs and wells indicate that the main source of water to the Batinah coastal alluvial aquifer is high-altitude rainfall from the adjacent Jabal Akhdar Mountains, originating from a combination of northern and southern moisture sources. The groundwater recharged at high-altitude forms two plumes of water which is depleted in the heavy isotopes 18O and 2H and stretches from the mountains across the coastal plain to the sea, thereby retaining a chemical homogeneity horizontally and vertically down to a depth exceeding 300 m. In contrast, in areas adjacent to these two plumes the alluvial aquifer is geochemically stratified. Near the coast, saline intrusion results in abrupt changes in chloride concentrations and isotope values.

Terrestrial permafrost archives along the Yukon Coastal Plain (northwest Canada) have recorded landscape development and environmental change since the Late Wisconsinan at the interface of unglaciated Beringia (i.e. Komakuk Beach) and the northwestern limit of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (i.e. Herschel Island). The objective of this paper is to compare the late glacial and Holocene landscape development on both sides of the former ice margin based on permafrost sequences and ground ice. Analyses at these sites involved a multi-proxy approach including: sedimentology, cryostratigraphy, palaeoecology of ostracods, stable water isotopes in ground ice, hydrochemistry, and AMS radiocarbon and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) dating. AMS and IRSL age determinations yielded full glacial ages at Komakuk Beach that is the northeastern limit of ice-free Beringia. Herschel Island to the east marks the Late Wisconsinan limit of the northwest Laurentide Ice Sheet and is composed of ice-thrust sediments containing plant detritus as young as 16.2 cal ka BP that might provide a maximum age on ice arrival. Late Wisconsinan ice wedges with sediment-rich fillings on Herschel Island are depleted in heavy oxygen isotopes (mean d18O of -29.1 per mil); this, together with low d-excess values, indicates colder-than-modern winter temperatures and probably reduced snow depths. Grain-size distribution and fossil ostracod assemblages indicate that deglaciation of the Herschel Island ice-thrust moraine was accompanied by alluvial, proluvial, and eolian sedimentation on the adjacent unglaciated Yukon Coastal Plain until ~11 cal ka BP during a period of low glacio-eustatic sea level. The late glacial-Holocene transition was marked by higher-than-modern summer temperatures leading to permafrost degradation that began no later than 11.2 cal ka BP and caused a regional thaw unconformity. Cryostructures and ice wedges were truncated while organic matter was incorporated and soluble ions were leached in the thaw zone. Thermokarst activity led to the formation of ice-wedge casts and deposition of thermokarst lake sediments. These were subsequently covered by rapidly accumulating peat during the early Holocene Thermal Maximum. A rising permafrost table, reduced peat accumulation, and extensive ice-wedge growth resulted from climate cooling starting in the middle Holocene until the late 20th century. The reconstruction of palaeolandscape dynamics on the Yukon Coastal Plain and the eastern Beringian edge contributes to unraveling the linkages between ice sheet, ocean, and permafrost that have existed since the Late Wisconsinan.
