Material RepresentationsThrough an examination and critique of western notions of ideology, particularlythose based on Lois Althusser’s account of ideology grounded in imaginaryconditions of existence, my research aimed to propose an alternative way of thinkingabout ideology and ontology. My argument related specifically to art and culture anddemonstrated through theoretical argument and practice, how Indigenous art andculture allow us to conceive of an alternative understanding of ideology. The purposeis to attempt to overturn the amnesia condition that persists in Australia with regardsto culture. I elaborated an alternative framework of ideology based on Indigenousculture and grounded on the relationship between culture and Land and posited amaterialist ontology that resolves the opposition between “real” and the “imaginary”as they are understood within an Althussian framework. My argument is underpinnedby the crucial premise that an Indigenous ideology is grounded upon the notion of“Country” (Land) and its inextricable relation to culture.

In this study an effective nanocomposite antimicrobial agent for wool fabric was introduced. The silver loaded nano TiO(2) as a nanocomposite was prepared through UV irradiation in an ultrasonic bath. The nanocomposite was stabilized on the wool fabric surface by using citric acid as a friendly cross-linking agent. The treated wool fabrics indicated an antimicrobial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. Increasing the concentration of Ag/TiO(2) nanocomposite led to an improvement in antibacterial activities of the treated fabrics. Also increasing the amount of citric acid improved the adsorption of Ag/TiO(2) on the wool fabric surface leading to enhance antibacterial activity. The EDS spectrum, SEM images, and XRD patterns was studied to confirm the presence of existence of nanocomposite on the fabric surface. The role of both cross-linking agent and nanocomposite concentrations on the results was investigated using response surface methodology (RSM).

BACKGROUND: Present study provides clinical evidence of existence of a functional loop involving miR-21 and let-7a as potential regulators of aberrant STAT3 signaling recently reported by our group in an experimental setup (Shishodia et al. BMC Cancer 2014, 14:996). The study is now extended to a set of cervical tissues that represent natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced tumorigenic transformation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cervical tissues from histopathologically-confirmed pre-cancer (23) and cancer lesions (56) along with the normal control tissues (23) were examined for their HPV infection status, expression level of miR-21 & let-7a and STAT3 & pSTAT3 (Y705) by PCR-based genotyping, quantitative real-time PCR and immunoblotting. RESULTS: Analysis of cancer tissues revealed an elevated miR-21 and reduced let-7a expression that correspond to the level of STAT3 signaling. While miR-21 showed direct association, let-7a expression was inversely related to STAT3 expression and its activation. In contrast, a similar reciprocal expression kinetics was absent in LSIL and HSIL tissues which overexpressed let-7a. miR-21 was found differentially overexpressed in HPV16-positive lesions with a higher oncoprotein E6 level. Overexpression of miR-21 was accompanied by elevated level of other STAT3-regulated gene products MMP-2 and MMP-9. Enhanced miR-21 was found associated with decreased level of STAT3 negative regulator PTEN and negative regulator of MMPs, TIMP-3. CONCLUSION: Overall, our study suggests that the microRNAs, miR-21 and let-7a function as clinically relevant integral components of STAT3 signaling and are responsible for maintaining activated state of STAT3 in HPV-infected cells during cervical carcinogenesis.

GIVE US THIS DAY is a collection of poetry grounded in the lyrical tradition that speaks to the conflicting need for structure and the inherent desire to be free. It focuses on those moments of rupture, when the structure, whether physical, emotional, psychological or political, is broken. The title poem sets the tone for the collection, capturing the idea that today is all one can truly know. Throughout the five sections of the collection, one comes to understand a complex family story, where right and wrong is blurred in the reality of existence. The sections, representing various parts of the day, are a parallel to the individual stories, speaking to the idea that a single day contains both times of light and darkness, similar to a life. The collection takes place in several cityscapes from Moscow to Delhi, Washington, D.C. to Miami. There are correlations drawn between familial settings and political unrest and tension. Often the political atmosphere is alluded to and drawn into context through the use of intimate personal vignettes. In contrast to the urban noise, there is pervasive natural imagery of gardens and tropical locales which mimic the physical life cycle, climaxing in the blossom.

Introdução: A Gengivite Ulcerativa Necrosante (GUN) é uma das patologias orais com mais décadas de estudo. A sua designação foi evoluindo ao longo dos anos até ter sido englobada na categoria das doenças periodontais necrosantes (DPN). As lesões provocadas pela GUN são consideradas únicas entre as doenças periodontais, principalmente pela sua apresentação clínica bastante distinta (Rowland, 1999). Apesar de ser uma doença com sinais muito próprios e fatores predisponentes bem estabelecidos, a etiologia e patogénese das lesões são muito mal compreendidas. O objetivo deste trabalho é efetuar uma revisão bibliográfica dos principais conceitos relativos a esta doença, defini-la e classificá-la, assim como fazer uma abordagem ao seu diagnóstico e respetivo plano de tratamento. Materiais e Métodos: Foi realizada uma pesquisa na base de dados da PubMed e da b-ON, utilizando como palavras-chave: “Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis”, AND “Necrotizing periodontal disease”. Apenas foram pesquisados artigos em português e inglês, não tendo sido empregues quaisquer limites temporais, resultando num total de 32 artigos, complementado com uma obra literária. Resultados/Conclusões: Após análise da literatura é possível verificar que, mesmo os estudos mais recentes, revelam muitas dúvidas sobre esta doença, apesar das décadas de existência. Porém todos os estudos são unânimes em realçar um aspeto muito importante, a realização de um diagnóstico precoce é a chave para um tratamento adequado, criando, aos pacientes, as condições mínimas necessárias para uma adequada higiene oral e alimentação, que até aí a doença os obrigava a privar.

Ce mémoire a pour but de décrire et d’analyser la diversité des expériences de jeunes Kanak et d’explorer comment ils font preuve d’agencéité en vue de prendre part au « vivre ensemble » en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Ne pouvant couvrir l’ensemble de la « jeunesse kanak », la recherche porte en particulier sur une « bande » de jeunes de Koné impliquée dans des associations régies par la loi du 1er juillet 1901 et dont les activités se déroulent autour d’une maisonnée du quartier des Cigales. L’analyse révèle qu’on ne peut réduire les expériences et pratiques des jeunes aux discours dominants qui les enferment dans une culture ancestrale immuable et qui mettent surtout l’accent sur leur inadéquation dans le monde contemporain et leurs problèmes. Les jeunes sont dotés de capacités créatives, désirent contribuer à la société, mais surtout, à y avoir un espace de parole. La recherche montre également que les expériences et initiatives des jeunes doivent être comprises en relation avec la « situation » contemporaine dans laquelle elles prennent place et qui est caractérisée par les transformations du contexte social, politique et économique de la Nouvelle-Calédonie depuis la signature de l’Accord de Nouméa (1998). Na actualidade, face ao desenvolvimento de betões de alto desempenho caracterizados por apresentarem muito baixa razão água cimento (A/C), tornou-se pertinente o estudo da retracção autogénea, por motivos relacionados com a resistência, durabilidade e estética destes materiais. Nesta dissertação foi elaborado um estudo prático com o intuito de avaliar o impacto da adição de agregado na redução da retracção autogénea, em seis misturas cimentícias. Através de ensaios foram obtidos valores reais de retracção autogénea, sendo estes posteriormente comparados com os valores obtidos teoricamente com recurso ao modelo proposto por Hobbs na década de 70. Tendo em consideração os valores teóricos e sua comparação com os valores reais obtidos nos ensaios é proposta uma alteração ao modelo teórico, que tem em conta a maior resistência à compressão dos betões actuais. Esta modificação permitiu estimar com maior exactidão os valores de retracção autogénea nas diferentes misturas. /ABSTRACT: Nowadays the development of high performance concretes characterized by a low water-to­ cement ratio (W/C), it became relevant to study the autogenous shrinkage, for reasons relating to the strength, durability and aesthetics of these materials. ln this study the effect of adding aggregate in six cementitious mixtures was evaluated. The results obtained in the experimental test were compared with theoretical values from a model propose by Hobbs in the 70's for autogenous shrinkage. Given the theoretical values and its comparison with the actual values obtained in the tests an amendment is proposed to the theoretical model that takes into account the higher compressive strength of actual concrete. This modification allowed us to estimate accurately the values of autogenous shrinkage in the different mixtures.

O presente texto pretende dar um contributo para o estudo da formação de professores do ensino primário em Évora, nos finais do século XIX e as duas primeiras décadas do Século XX. Para tal, impõe-se-nos enquadrar a formação de professores do ensino primário em Portugal, caracterizar a rede escolar e os professores do distrito de Évora da segunda metade do Século XIX e, a partir daí, descrever o funcionamento da Escola Normal de 2a classe de Évora, estabelecida no edifício da Igreja de S. Pedro e inaugurada em 1884. Após uma curta existência de oito anos, esta escola foi encerrada e deu lugar à Escola Distrital de Habilitação para o Magistério Primário de Évora, criada em 1896. Apesar de alguma instabilidade institucional (com mudanças nos curricula e na duração da formação), entre 1884 e 1919, estas duas escolas habilitaram dezenas de professores do ensino primário que leccionaram no distrito de Évora. Between art and ability: The primary teachers' formation in Évora (1884 -1919). ABSTRACT: The following text has the purpose of contributing for the study of primary teachers' formation in Évora by the end of the nineteenth century and the first two decades of the twentieth century. Therefore, we first need to understand the frame given by the teachers' formation of the primary school in Portugal, to characterize the school network and the teachers of Évora district of the second half of the nineteenth century and, from that, describe the function of Escola Normal de 2a classe of Évora, established in the building of S. Pedro's church and first opened in 1884. After a short eight years of existence, this school was closed and gave place to Escola Distrital de Habilitação for the Magistério Primário of Évora, created in 1896. Despite some institutional instability (with changes in the curricula and length of the formation), between 1884 and 1919, this two schools qualified several primary teachers for the district of Évora.

This paper provides an analysis of the key term aidagara (“betweenness”) in the philosophical ethics of Watsuji Tetsurō (1889-1960), in response to and in light of the recent movement in Japanese Buddhist studies known as “Critical Buddhism.” The Critical Buddhist call for a turn away from “topical” or intuitionist thinking and towards (properly Buddhist) “critical” thinking, while problematic in its bipolarity, raises the important issue of the place of “reason” versus “intuition” in Japanese Buddhist ethics. In this paper, a comparison of Watsuji’s “ontological quest” with that of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), Watsuji’s primary Western source and foil, is followed by an evaluation of a corresponding search for an “ontology of social existence” undertaken by Tanabe Hajime (1885-1962). Ultimately, the philosophico-religious writings of Watsuji Tetsurō allow for the “return” of aesthesis as a modality of social being that is truly dimensionalized, and thus falls prey neither to the verticality of topicalism nor the limiting objectivity of criticalism.
