This work refers to the theoretical and experimental study of the behavior of CFRP reinforced concrete columns and beams. The analysis was done considering that the pillars are reinforced by CFRP wrapping technique, resulting in a confinement effect. The beams are reinforced by the addition of bars of the same material, with shear reinforcements. The objective is to compare the analytical study of this type of reinforcement with experimental results obtained prior to the performance of this document, and draw conclusions for any differences. Notice that experimental models are not part of this study. The tests were performed on circular and square section pillars, evaluating compression fracture of the pieces, having been scaled down with a factor of 2.3. The tests were performed on rectangular section beams, focusing on evaluation of the bending fracture and being scaled down equally, but with a factor of 1:2. The document is divided into four chapters, whose content is set out concisely below. The chapter one or theoretical framework sets out the principles of behavior and types of columns and beams of reinforced concrete, the theoretical basis of its reinforcement and confinement, as well as various existing reinforcement techniques. CFRP technique it’s detailed, comparing and analyzing their advantages and disadvantages. Chapter two describes the process of manufacture, reinforcement and results of experimental models made for both structural elements. Chapter three shows the obtaining of the theoretical models, comparing them with the experimental results in the fourth chapter. Finally, the last chapter presents the conclusions to make this comparison in the strengthening of beams and columns with carbon fiber.

Although 3DTV has led the evolution of television market, its delivery by broadcast networks is still small. Now, 3DTV transmis-sions are usually done by combining both views into one common frame (side by side) to be able to use standard HDTV transmission equipment. Today, orthogonal subsampling is mostly used, but other alternatives will appear soon. Here, different subsampling schemes for both progressive and interlaced 3DTV are considered. For each possible scheme, its pre-served frequency content is analyzed and a simple interpolation filter is designed. The analysis is carried out for progressive and interlaced video and the designed filters are applied on different sequences, showing the advantages and disadvantages of the different options

At present there is much literature that refers to the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of statistical and dynamical downscaling of climate variables projected by climate models. Less attention has been paid to other indirect variables, like runoff, which play a significant role in evaluating the impact of climate change on hydrological systems. Runoff presents a much greater bias in climate models than other climate variables, like temperature or precipitation. It is very important to identify the methods that minimize bias while downscaling runoff from the gridded results of climate models to the basin scale

Currently, vehicles are often equipped with active safety systems to reduce the risk of accidents, most of which occur in urban environments. The most prominent include Antilock Braking Systems (ABS), Traction Control and Stability Control. All these systems use different kinds of sensors to constantly monitor the conditions of the vehicle, and act in an emergency. In this paper the use of ultrasonic sensors in active safety systems for urban traffic is proposed, and the advantages and disadvantages when compared to other sensors are discussed. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) for urban traffic based on ultrasounds is presented as an application example. The proposed system has been implemented in a fully-automated prototype vehicle and has been tested under real traffic conditions. The results confirm the good performance of ultrasonic sensors in these systems. ©2011 by the authors.

Cable-stayed bridges represent nowadays key points in transport networks and their seismic behavior needs to be fully understood, even beyond the elastic range of materials. Both nonlinear dynamic (NL-RHA) and static (pushover) procedures are currently available to face this challenge, each with intrinsic advantages and disadvantages, and their applicability in the study of the nonlinear seismic behavior of cable-stayed bridges is discussed here. The seismic response of a large number of finite element models with different span lengths, tower shapes and class of foundation soil is obtained with different procedures and compared. Several features of the original Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) are modified in light of cable-stayed bridge characteristics, furthermore, an extension of MPA and a new coupled pushover analysis (CNSP) are suggested to estimate the complex inelastic response of such outstanding structures subjected to multi-axial strong ground motions.

The FPAA's are programmable analog devices. These devices rely on the use of switched capacitors together with operational amplifiers. This type of technology has a number of advantages, because they combine the advantages of digital devices such as the reprogramming function of the variables of the surrounding environment, with the difference being analog devices, allowing the realization of a wide range of designs analog on a single chip. This project has conducted a study on the operation of the switched capacitor and its use in the device AN221E04 from Anadigm. Having described the architecture of AN221E04 and explained the basis for the operation of the switched capacitor, using the example models provided by Anadigm is developing an instrumentation amplifier theory model and describes the methodology for implementation in a AN221E04 with the Anadigm Designer 2 software. Once implemented this instrumentation amplifier model, have made a series of tests in order to study the ability of these devices. These tests show that the FPAA's have a number of advantages to take into account when making analog designs. The accuracy obtained by the instrumentation amplifier model is made more than acceptable, earning gain errors of less than 1% with gains of 200V / V without the need for major adjustments. The conclusions of this study are presented both advantages and disadvantages of using FPAA's in analog designs. The main advantage of this application is the cost savings, because once developed a platform for design, reconfiguration capability allows you to use this platform for a wide range of applications, reducing component count and simplifying design stages. As a disadvantage, the FPAA's have a number of limitations which must be taken into account in certain cases may make impossible a specific design, such as the maximum or minimum gain, or the magnitude of the possible settings.

The recession of coastal cliffs is a widespread phenomenon on the rocky shores that are exposed to the combined incidence of marine and meteorological processes that occur in the shoreline. This phenomenon is revealed violently and occasionally, as gravitational movements of the ground and can cause material or human losses. Although knowledge of the risks of erosion is vital for the proper management of the coast, the development of cliff erosion predictive models is limited by the complex interactions between environmental processes and material properties over a range of temporal and spatial scales. Published prediction models are scarce and present important drawbacks: extrapolation, that extend historical records to the future; empirical, that based on historical records studies the system response against the change in one parameter; stochastic, that represent of cliff behaviour based on assumptions regarding the magnitude and frequency of events in a probabilistic framework based on historical records; process-response, stability and error propagation unexplored; PDE´s, highly computationally expensive and not very accurate. The first part of this thesis describes the main features of the latest models of each type and, for the most commonly used, their ranges of application, advantages and disadvantages are given. Finally as a synthesis of the most relevant processes that include the revised models, a conceptual diagram of coastal recession is presented. This conceptual model includes the most influential processes that must be taken into account when using or creating a model of coastal recession to evaluate the dangerousness (time/frequency) of the phenomenon to medium-short term. A new process-response coastal recession model developed in this thesis has been designed to incorporate the behavioural and mechanical characteristics of coastal cliffs which are composed of with materials whose compressive strength is less than 5 MPa. The model simulates the spatial and temporal evolution of a cliff-2D profile that can consist of heterogeneous materials. To do so, marine dynamics: mean sea level, waves, tides, lake seasonal changes; is coupled with the evolution of land recession: erosion, cliff face failure and associated protective colluvial wedge. The model in its different variants can include analysis of material geomechanical stability, the effect of debris present at the cliff foot, groundwater effects, beach and run-up effects, changes in the mean sea level or changes (seasonal or inter-annual) in the mean lake level. Computational implementation and study of different numerical resolution techniques, in both time and space approximations, and the produced errors are exposed and analysed for the first two tidal periods. The results obtained in the errors analysis allow us to operate the model with a configuration that minimizes the error of the approximation methods. The model is validated through profile evolution assessment at various locations of coastline retreat on the Holderness Coast, Yorkshire, UK and on the north coast of Lake Erie, Ontario, Canada. The results represent an important stepforward in linking material properties to the processes of cliff recession, in considering the effect of groundwater charge and the slope oversteeping and their response to changing conditions caused by climate change (i.e. sea level, changes in lakes levels, etc.).

Fractal and multifractal are concepts that have grown increasingly popular in recent years in the soil analysis, along with the development of fractal models. One of the common steps is to calculate the slope of a linear fit commonly using least squares method. This shouldn?t be a special problem, however, in many situations using experimental data the researcher has to select the range of scales at which is going to work neglecting the rest of points to achieve the best linearity that in this type of analysis is necessary. Robust regression is a form of regression analysis designed to circumvent some limitations of traditional parametric and non-parametric methods. In this method we don?t have to assume that the outlier point is simply an extreme observation drawn from the tail of a normal distribution not compromising the validity of the regression results. In this work we have evaluated the capacity of robust regression to select the points in the experimental data used trying to avoid subjective choices. Based on this analysis we have developed a new work methodology that implies two basic steps: ? Evaluation of the improvement of linear fitting when consecutive points are eliminated based on R pvalue. In this way we consider the implications of reducing the number of points. ? Evaluation of the significance of slope difference between fitting with the two extremes points and fitted with the available points. We compare the results applying this methodology and the common used least squares one. The data selected for these comparisons are coming from experimental soil roughness transect and simulated based on middle point displacement method adding tendencies and noise. The results are discussed indicating the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology.

In this paper the effect of different aircraft automated descent guidance strategies on fuel burn and the temporal predictability of the executed trajectory is investigated. The paper aims to provide an understanding of how airborne automation can be permitted by Air Traffic Control to remain in control of the descent in the presence of disturbances while providing sufficient predictability. Simulations have been performed investigating different guidance strategies. While each strategy has its advantages and disadvantages, results indicate that improved temporal predictability comes at the cost of additional fuel burn and loss of predictability in other dimensions of the trajectory.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) requires integrated "all in one" electronic devices capable of performing analysis of structural integrity and on-board damage detection in aircraft?s structures. PAMELA III (Phased Array Monitoring for Enhanced Life Assessment, version III) SHM embedded system is an example of this device type. This equipment is capable of generating excitation signals to be applied to an array of integrated piezoelectric Phased Array (PhA) transducers stuck to aircraft structure, acquiring the response signals, and carrying out the advanced signal processing to obtain SHM maps. PAMELA III is connected with a host computer in order to receive the configuration parameters and sending the obtained SHM maps, alarms and so on. This host can communicate with PAMELA III through an Ethernet interface. To avoid the use of wires where necessary, it is possible to add Wi-Fi capabilities to PAMELA III, connecting a Wi-Fi node working as a bridge, and to establish a wireless communication between PAMELA III and the host. However, in a real aircraft scenario, several PAMELA III devices must work together inside closed structures. In this situation, it is not possible for all PAMELA III devices to establish a wireless communication directly with the host, due to the signal attenuation caused by the different obstacles of the aircraft structure. To provide communication among all PAMELA III devices and the host, a wireless mesh network (WMN) system has been implemented inside a closed aluminum wingbox. In a WMN, as long as a node is connected to at least one other node, it will have full connectivity to the entire network because each mesh node forwards packets to other nodes in the network as required. Mesh protocols automatically determine the best route through the network and can dynamically reconfigure the network if a link drops out. The advantages and disadvantages on the use of a wireless mesh network system inside closed aerospace structures are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to use the predictive control to take advantage of the future information in order to improve the reference tracking. The control attempts to increase the bandwidth of the conventional regulators by using the future information of the reference, which is supposed to be known in advance. A method for designing a controller is also proposed. A comparison in simulation with a conventional regulator is made controlling a four-phase Buck converter. Advantages and disadvantages are analyzed based on simulation results.

Abstract This project is aimed mainly to develop real options theory to assess a mining project start-up. The project is divided in two documents: The first document with theorical content, investments are analyzed from the clasical point of view, comparing the advantages and disadvantages of this appraisal in high uncertainity and operational flexibility conditions. Financial options are analyzed and compared to real options, in both similarities and problematics. Stochastical process that affect the project variables are also developed. Methods for estimating real options value, including the methods for volatility estimation are commented. In the second document, the Corcoesto gold deposit has been studied. A bussines plan simulation has been maked according to the characteristics of the extraction, where incomes have been simulated with a geometrical Brownian movement to estimate the gold onze behaviour. The binomial tree method has been generated to study the future project value, as well as a range of option prices, for adquiring the mine project. This interval is determined by the project uncertainity calculated with the theories from Copeland and Antikarov and Herath and Park

ABSTRACT. The technological world is changing towards optimizing resource management thanks to the powerful influence of technologies such as Virtualization and Cloud Computing. This document presents a closer approach to them, from the causes that have motivated to their last trends, as well as showing their main features, advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the Digital Home is a reality for most humans. It provides access to multiple types of telecommunication networks (3G, 4G, WI-FI, ADSL...) with more or less capacity, allowing Internet connections from anywhere, at any time, and with virtually any device (computer personal smartphones, tablets, televisions...).This is used by companies to provide all kinds of services. Some of these services offer storage on the cloud to devices with limited capacity, such as smartphones and tablets. That is normally storage space on servers under the control of important companies. Saving private documents, videos, photos, without being sure that they are not viewed by anyone without consent, can wake up suspicions in some users. For those users who want control over their privacy, it offers the possibility that it is the user himself to mount his own server and its own cloud service to share private information only with family and friends or with anyone with consent. During the project I have compared different solutions, most open source and with GNU licenses, for deploying one storage facility accessible via the Internet. Some supplement include streaming services of music , videos or photos, sharing and syncing documents across multiple devices, calendars, backups, desktop virtualization, file versioning, chats... The project ends with a demonstration of how to use our digital home devices interacting with a cloud server where one of the solutions compared is installed and configured. This server will be packaged in a virtual machine to be easily transportable and usable.
