A novel conducting polymer poly(phenylene sulfide-tetraaniline) (PPSTEA), with tetraaniline (TA) and phenylene sulfide (PS) segments in its repeat unit, has been synthesized through an acid-induced polycondensation reaction of 4-methylsulfinylphenyl-capped tetraaniline. The new polymer, which represents the first soluble conducting polyaniline analogue with well-defined structure, has high molecular weight, good solubility in common solvents, and good film-forming properties. Its electrical property is analogous to polyaniline. The conductivity of preliminarily, protonic-doping PPSTEA is up to 10 degrees S/cm. This synthetic strategy appears to be general for developing novel well-defined polyaniline analogue containing much longer fixed conjugation length.

A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. The effect of organic solvents on the electrochemical behavior of the soluble polyimide(PI) was studied by using cyclic voltammetry. It was found that PI can undergo electrochemical reaction in some solvents, while the electrochemical response can not be observed in other solvents. The results of IR spectra indicate that the effect of the solvents on the electrochemical behavior of PI is due to the different interactions between PI and the solvent.

A series of novel nitrogen- and sulfur-containing conjugated polymers have been synthesized via an acid-induced self polycondensation of functional monomers with methyl sulfinyl group. They exhibit good solubility in common solvents, such as CHCl3, THF, DMF, DMSO, et al; and thus show excellent film-forming properties. They are used as hole-transport layer (HTL) in two-layer light-emitting diodes (ITO/polymer/Alq3/Mg:Ag). The typical turn-on voltage of these diodes is about 4 similar to 5V. The maximum brightness is about 3440cd/m(2) at 20 V. The maximum efficiency is estimated to be 0.15 Im/W at 10V.

A new solvent, dimethylformamide (DMF), and the traditional solvent, 1,4-butanediol, were used to prepare single crystals of nylon-10,10 from a dilute solution. The lamellae grown from DMF inhabited a more perfect structure and regular shape than those crystals crystallized from traditional solvents such as 1,4-butanediol and glycerin. These thin and perfect lamellar crystals demonstrated patterns of variation in spacing different from those of melt-crystallized spherulites on heating. Specifically, the two main spacings slightly separated rather than continuously approaching each other when the temperature was greater than 180 degreesC. This is a novel phenomenon observed in nylons. Nevertheless, the usual pattern of change in spacing was observed during the cooling process. These lamellar crystals showed more compact spacing of the (002) and (010/100) planes than spherulites at room temperature. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Hemorrhagin III (AaH III) was separated and purified from the crude snake venom of Agkistrodon acutus, and its molecule weight was determined accurately to be 23; 284.4 +/- 0.1 by LDI1700-MALDI-TOF-MS. Emission spectra of AaH III showed that Trp residues were located by a great degree in the hydrophobic area. Addition of SDS and guanidine-HCl led to change of the molecular conformation of AaH III, and caused the fluorescence quenching of Trp residues. The red-shifted emission band of AaH III after adding guanidine-HCl showed that Trp residues exposed in polar solvents. The effects of pH, EDTA and metal ions on the fluorescence spectra of AaH III were also investigated.

Optically active 2,2'-bis(2-trifluoro-4-aminophenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl and its corresponding racemate were prepared by a nucleophilic substitution reaction of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol with 2-chloro-5-nitrotrifluorotoluene and subsequently by the reduction of the resulting dinitro compounds. a series of optically active and optically inactive aromatic polyimides also were prepared therefrom, These polymers readily were soluble in common organic solvents such as pyridine, N,N'-dimethylacetamide, and m-cresol and had glass-transition temperatures of 256 similar to 278 degrees C. The specific rotations of the chiral polymers ranged from 167 similar to 258 degrees, and their chiroptical properties also were studied. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons Inc.

A new kind of monomers including aromatic spirodilactone-5, 5'-carboxy-7,7'-dioxo-2,2'-spirobi(benzo-[c]tetrahydrofuran) is synthesized from m-xylene and paraformaldehyde. It is converted to a series of polyamides and polyesters by means of low-temperature solution polycondensation and interfacial polycondensation. NMR and IR spectra, solubility, mechanical and thermal properties of all these polymers are investigated. The polymers have high glass transition temperatures and good thermal oxidative properties. All polyamides have high viscosity and good solubility in strong polar organic solvents such as DMSO, DMAc, DMF and NMP. All polyamides can be cast into transparent, flexible and tough films possessing good tensile properties.

A new approach for the crosslinking of polyimides via the lactamization of spirodilactone unit in polyimide backbone was studied by two means: model reaction and the comparison of the properties of the polyimide precursors to those of the crosslinking polymers. Polyimides 4 and 5 were soluble in N,N'dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), N'-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), and other common organic solvents, whereas their corresponding crosslinking polymers were insoluble in these solvents. The glass transition temperatures for polyimide 5 and its crosslinking polymer were 262 degrees C and 291 degrees C, whereas those for polyimide 4 and its crosslinking polymer were 265 degrees C and 360 degrees C. The weight-loss rate of the crosslinling polymers was apparently slower than that of the precursors when the temperature was >400 degrees C. The 10% weight-loss temperature for the polyimides 4 and 5 was <500 degrees C, whereas that for the crosslinking polymers was close to or above 600 degrees C. The results indicate that this type of crosslinking polymer has good thermal properties. The temperature for the formation of lactam was above 180 degrees C. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Stable monolayer of the polyaniline doped with camphor sulfonic acid at the air-water interface has been obtained, of which multilayers have been successfully deposited by Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto CaF2 substrate. The limiting mean molecular area and collapse pressure are found to be 0.294 nm(2) and 41 mN/m, respectively. The multilayers were characterized by IR and W-Vis-NIR spectroscopies. X-ray small-angle diffraction data show that the multilayer was periodic layer structure with the layer spacing of 1.60 nm. The comparisons are also made with characterization of the casting film. The electrochemical behavior of a series of undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by first-row transition metals, ZnW11M(H2O)O-39(n-) (M=Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu or Zn), was investigated systematically and comparably in aqueous solutions by electrochemical and in situ UV-visible-near-IR spectroelectrochemical methods. These compounds exhibit not only successive reduction processes of the addenda atoms (W) in a negative potential range, but some of them also involve redox reactions originating from the substituted transition metals (M) such as the reduction of Fe-III and Cu-II at less negative potentials and the oxidation of Mn-II at a more positive potential. Some interesting results and phenomena, especially of the transition metals, were found for the first time. Moreover, possible reaction mechanisms are proposed based on the experimental results.

A series of novel PPV derivative copolymers with good solubility in common organic solvents were synthesized. The emitting color of these copolymers could range from red to blue by adjusting the structures and the compositions of monomers. Investigation on their optical properties showed that the PL quantum efficiency could be increased by energy transfer and conjugation reduction. The PL quantum efficiency of most green/blue copolymer films on slide glass was higher than 80%.

Polyaniline (PAn) was doped with phosphonic acid containing hydrophilic tails. The solubility of the doped PAn in water was controlled by changing the length of hydrophilic chain in the dopant. When poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with molecular weight M-w = 550 was used as the hydrophilic chain of the dopant, the doped PAn was entirely soluble in water. The film cast from aqueous solution showed good electrochemical redox reversibility, Aqueous solution blending of PAn with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 20 000) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 360 000) was achieved. Percolation threshold of the composite film was lower than 3 wt.%. Electrical conductivity of the composite film was in the range of 10(-1)-10(-5) S cm(-1), depending on molecular weight of the acid and the content of PAn in the composite. We here present a versatile process for the preparation of maghemite/polyaniline (gamma-Fe2O3/ PAn) nanocomposite films with macroscopic processibility, electrical conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility. The gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are coated and the PAn chains are doped by anionic surfactants of omega-methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) phosphate (PEOPA), 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), and 10-camphorsulfonic acid (CSA). Both the coated gamma-Fe2O3 and the doped PAn are soluble in common organic solvents, and casting of the homogeneous solutions gives free-standing nanocomposite films with gamma-Fe2O3 contents up to similar to 50 wt %. The morphology of the gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The gamma-Fe2O3/PAn films prepared from chloroform/m-cresol solutions of DBSA-coated gamma-Fe2O3 and CSA-doped PAn are conductive (sigma = 82-237 S/cm) and superpapamagnetic, exhibiting no hysteresis at room temperature. The zero-field-cooled magnetization experiment reveals that the nanocomposite containing 20.8 wt % gamma-Fe2O3 has a blocking temperature (T-b) in the temperature region of 63-83 K.

A poly(o-toluidine) (POT)/2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) composite was prepared. When POT and DMcT are mixed in a proper solvent, POT in a medium-oxidation state is reduced, and DMcT in turn is oxidized to its soluble dimer when the molar ratio of DMcT to POT is higher than 0.5. Therefore, the composite was soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylformamide (DMF), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and exhibited very high electroactivity, two orders of magnitude higher than that of pure POT and three orders of magnitude higher than that of pure DMcT. Molecular-level contact between POT and DMcT is the reason for the improved catalytic effect of POT on DMcT, compared to that of polyaniline on DMcT. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical Society.
