Formation of nanocrystalline TiN at low temperatures was demonstrated by combining Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and ion implantation techniques. The Ti films of nominal thickness similar to 250 nm were deposited at a substrate temperature of 200 degrees C by ablating a high pure titanium target in UHV conditions using a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm. These films were implanted with 100 keV N+ ions with fluence ranging from 1.0 x 10(16) ions/cm(2) to 1.0 x 10(17) ions/cm(2). The structural, compositional and morphological evolutions were tracked using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), respectively. TEM analysis revealed that the as-deposited titanium film is an fcc phase. With increasing ion fluence, its structure becomes amorphous phase before precipitation of nanocrystalline fcc TiN phase. Compositional depth profiles obtained from SIMS have shown the extent of nitrogen concentration gradient in the implantation zone. Both as-deposited and ion implanted films showed much higher hardness as compared to the bulk titanium. AFM studies revealed a gradual increase in surface roughness leading to surface patterning with increase in ion fluence.

In the present investigation, tests were conducted on a tribological couple made of cylindrical lead pin with spherical tip against 080 M40 steel plates of different textures with varying roughness under both dry and lubricated conditions using an inclined pin-on-plate sliding tester. Surface roughness parameters of the steel plates were measured using optical profilometer. The morphologies of the worn surfaces of the pins and the formation of transfer layer on the counter surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope. It was observed that the coefficient of friction and the formation of transfer layer depend primarily on the surface texture of hard surfaces. A newly formulated non-dimensional hybrid roughness parameter called 'xi' (a product of number of peaks and maximum profile peak height) of the tool surface plays an important role in determining the frictional behaviour of the surfaces studied. The effect of surfaces texture on coefficient of friction was attributed to the variation of plowing component of friction, which in turn depends on the roughness parameter 'xi'.

A major drawback in using bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) as structural materials is their extremely poor fatigue performance. One way to alleviate this problem is through the composite route, in which second phases are introduced into the glass to arrest crack growth. In this paper, the fatigue crack growth behavior of in situ reinforced BMGs with crystalline dendrites, which are tailored to impart significant ductility and toughness to the BMG, was investigated. Three composites, all with equal volume fraction of dendrite phases, were examined to assess the influence of chemical composition on the near-threshold fatigue crack growth characteristics. While the ductility is enhanced at the cost of yield strength vis-a-vis that of the fully amorphous BMG, the threshold stress intensity factor range for fatigue crack initiation in composites was found to be enhanced by more than 100%. Crack blunting and trapping by the dendritic phases and constraining of the shear bands within the interdendritic regions are the micromechanisms responsible for this enhanced fatigue crack growth resistance.

Dimensional analysis using π-theorem is applied to the variables associated with plastic deformation. The dimensionless groups thus obtained are then related and rewritten to obtain the constitutive equation. The constants in the constitutive equation are obtained using published flow stress data for carbon steels. The validity of the constitutive equation is tested for steels with up to 1.54 wt%C at temperatures: 850–1200 °C and strain rates: 6 × 10−6–2 × 10−2 s−1. The calculated flow stress agrees favorably with experimental data.

Dispersibility of colloidal barium titanate suspensions is reviewed with an emphasis on the use of various polyelectrolytes as dispersants. The fundamentals of colloidal stability are discussed followed by the colloidal properties of barium titanate powder. Dispersion behavior of BaTiO3 in both nonaqueous and aqueous media has been reviewed. Several studies on the stabilization of micron and nano-sized barium titanate using various polymeric dispersants and a rhamnolipid biosurfactant are presented and discussed. The article attempts to provide a comprehensive review of the current state-of-the-art in the area of colloidal processing of barium titanate.

The hot deformation behavior of beta-quenched Zr-1 Nb-1Sn was studied in the temperature range 650-1050 degrees C and strain rate range 0.001-100 s(-1) using processing maps. These maps revealed three different domains: a domain of dynamic recovery at temperatures <700 degrees C and at strain rates <3 x 10(-3) s(-1), a domain of dynamic recrystallization in the temperature range 750-950 C-degrees and at strain rates <10(-2) S-1 with a peak at 910 degrees C and 10(-3) S-1 (in alpha + beta phase field), and a domain of large-grain superplasticity in the beta phase field at strain rates <10(-2) s(-1). In order to identify the rate controlling mechanisms involved in these domains, kinetic analysis was carried out to determine the various activation parameters. In addition, the processing maps showed a regime of flow instability spanning both alpha + beta and beta phase fields. The hot deformation behavior of Zr 1Nb-1Sn was compared with that of Zr, Zr-2.5Nb and Zircaloy-2 to bring out the effects of alloy additions. (C) 2006 Elsevier BN. All rights reserved.

We have synthesized FINEMET type amorphous Fe73.5Cu1Mo3Si13.5-xAlxB9 alloy by the single wheel melt spinning technique. The effect of Al substitution on the magnetic properties has been studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer, SQUID and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Magnetization and Curie temperature of the amorphous phase of the alloys were found to decrease with A] concentration. The results are attributed to the dilution effect of At on the magnetic moment of Fe and to the increase in Fe-Fe interaction distance resulting in the weakening of exchange interaction. The wear resistance of high chromium iron is well recorded. However, the same is not the case as regards the use of manganese at higher percentages in high chromium irons and its influence on wear behaviour. Hence, this work highlights the slurry wear characteristics of chromium 16–19%) iron following the introduction of manganese at two levels i.e. 5 and 10%. It is known that the wear properties are dictated by the microstructural features. To alter the structure, the cooling rate of casting has been varied by adopting two different types of moulds (i.e. sand and metal) and subsequently subjecting to thermal treatment. The as-cast and heat treated samples are examined for microstructure and then evaluated for hardness and slurry erosion properties. As the manganese content is increased from 5 to 10%, the hardness showed a decrease in value both in the as-cast and heat treated conditions. The slurry erosion loss, expectedly, showed an increase irrespective of the sample condition (i.e. mould type/heat treatment adopted). The findings are corroborated with the microstructural features obtained through optical and scanning electron microscopy.

Titanium alloys like Ti-6A-4V are the backbone materials for aerospace, energy and chemical industries. Hypoeutectic boron addition to Ti-6Al-4V alloy produces a reduction in as-cast grain size by roughly an order of magnitude resulting in the possibility of avoiding ingot breakdown step and thereby reducing the processing cost. In the present study, ISM processed as-cast boron added Ti-6Al-4V alloy is deformed in (alpha+beta)-phase field, where alpha-lath bending seemed to be the dominating deformation mechanism.

We demonstrate that irradiation may enhance the plasticity in metallic glasses by increasing the free-volume content via micropillar compression experiments on an ion-irradiated bulk metallic glass (BMG). Results show that irradiation decreases the flow stress and enhances the shear band formation by lowering the magnitude of stress serrations in plastic flow regime. These results highlight that amorphous alloys can mitigate the deleterious affects of severe ion irradiation as compared to their crystalline counterparts. (C) 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. The standard free energy of formation of titanium boride (TiB2) Was measured by the Electro Motive Force (EMF) method (by using yttria doped thoria (YDT) as the solid electrolyte). Two galvanic cells viz. Cell (I): Pt, TiB2 (s), TiO2 (s), B (s) vertical bar YDT vertical bar NiO (s), Ni (s), Pt and cell (II): Pt, TiB2 (s), TiO2 (s), B (s) vertical bar YDT vertical bar FeO (s). Fe (s), Pt were constructed in order to determine the Delta(f)G degrees, of TiB2. Enthalpy increments on TiB2 were measured by using inverse drop calorimetry over the temperature range 583-1769 K. The heat capacity, entropy and the free energy function have been derived from these experimental data in the temperature range 298-1800 K. The mean value of the standard enthalpy of formation of TiB2 (Delta H-f(298)degrees (TiB2)) was obtained by combining these Delta(f)G degrees, values and the free energy functions of TiB2 derived from the drop calorimetry data. The mean values of Delta H-f(298)degrees (TiB2) derived from the Delta(f)G degrees, data obtained from cell I and II were -322 +/- 1.2 kJ mol(-1) and -323.3 +/- 2.1 kJ mol(-1), respectively. These values were found to be in very good agreement with the assessed data. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Powder x-ray diffraction study of Mn2NiGa ferromagnetic shape memory alloy shows the existence of a 7M monoclinic modulated structure at room temperature (RT). The structure of Mn2NiGa is found to be highly dependent on residual stress. For higher stress, the structure is tetragonal at RT, and for intermediate stress it is 7M monoclinic. However, only when the stress is considerably relaxed, the structure is cubic, as is expected at RT since the martensitic transition temperature is 230 K.

Microstructure and microtexture evolution during static annealing of a hot-extruded AZ21 magnesium alloy was studied. Apart from fine recrystallized equiaxed grains and large elongated deformed grains, a new third kind of abnormal grains that are stacked one after the other in a row parallel to the extrusion direction were observed. The crystallographic misorientation inside these grains was similar to that of the fine recrystallized grains. The large elongated grains exhibited significant in-grain misorientation. A self-consistent mechanistic model was developed to describe the formation of these grain morphologies during dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The texture of pre-extruded material, although lost in DRX, leaves a unique signature which manifests itself in the form of these grain morphologies. The origin of abnormal stacked grains was associated with slow nucleation in pre-extruded grains of a certain orientation. Further annealing resulted in large secondary recrystallized grains with occasional extension twins. (c) 2009 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the effect of rhamnolipid biosurfactant on the electrokinetic and rheological behavior of nanozirconia particles is reported. The effect of pH, concentration of biosurfactant, and solids loading on ζ-potential and rheological behavior was investigated. ζ-potential measurements showed that adsorption of biosurfactant shifted the iso-electric point of zirconia with increasing biosurfactant concentration. The surface of zirconia became more electronegative in the presence of biosurfactant indicating a strong interaction. Maximum charge was obtained in the presence of about 230 ppm of biosurfactant. Rheological tests at pH 7 revealed that the zirconia suspension is viscous at high solids loading and addition of biosurfactant decreased the viscosity substantially especially at high solids loading (>50 wt%). Sedimentation tests confirmed that the biosurfactant is a good dispersant for zirconia particles at pH values of 7 and above.
