Purpose: To explore the natural trajectory of circadian rhythms of sedation requirement, core body temperature (CBT), pulmonary mechanics (PM), and gas exchange (GE) in mechanically ventilated swine, as these variables affect the duration of mechanical ventilation. ^ Design: A secondary analysis to describe and compare circadian rhythms of study variables in swine mechanically ventilated for ≤ 7 days. ^ Setting: Porcine Intensive Care Unit (ICU).^ Sample: Six male swine. ^ Methods: Sedation requirements were recorded hourly and the CBT, PM and GE variables were sampled every 1 s – 1 min for ≤ 7 days. The data sets for each pig with > 5 days ICU length of stay were divided into one section representing the first 3 days and one section representing subsequent days. The Lomb periodogram was used to estimate the circadian time period for each variable, and cosinor analysis with the estimated time period to obtain amplitude and mesor. Circadian to ultradian bandpower ratio to assess rhythm quality and stability over time and goodness-of-fit index to describe biological significance of a rhythm were used. Together, these two parameters were used to define rhythm robustness over time. The masking effect of sedation as a potential confounder of the circadian rhythms of CBT, PM, and GE was explored, and circadian rhythm profiles of CBT of pigs in the ICU setting were compared with those of the same pigs in the ambulatory setting. ^ Results: All pigs had significant rhythms in CBT, respiratory rate, and peripheral oxygen saturation across ICU data sets. Healthier pigs had more robust rhythms of study variables over time. Sedation did not appear to mask the circadian rhythms of CBT, PM, and GE. The circadian rhythm of CBT was less robust in the ICU setting than in the ambulatory setting. ^ Conclusions: Individual subject observations provided preliminary evidence that robustness of rhythms varies with subject acuity. Comparison of profiles of circadian rhythms among ICU subjects with similar acuity and disease processes is warranted to determine if the profiles in the present study are reproducible. Identification of consistent patterns may provide insight into subject morbidity and timing of such therapeutic interventions as weaning from mechanical ventilation. ^

Samples of drilled oceanic crust, from DSDP Holes 417A, 417D and 418A and ODP Hole 735B, and oceanic crust from the Oman and Cyprus ophiolites, were analyzed for B contents and d11B. Composite samples from DSDP Holes 417A, 417D and 418A were used to represent the upper 550 m of altered oceanic crustal Layer 2A. Whole-rock samples from the Troodos ophiolite, Cyprus, and the Oman ophiolite were selected to represent crustal Layer 2B dikes. Composite samples from ODP Hole 735B were used to represent crustal Layer 3. The B content of the DSDP composites ranges from 7.2 ppm to 104 ppm and correlates with both d1818O and K, showing that it is a good indicator of the extent of low temperature alteration. The d11B of the DSDP composites varies between -2.5? and 5.4?. The B content of the samples from the Troodos ophiolite ranges from 2.4 ppm to 8.1 ppm; d11B varies from -0.9? to 7.8?. The B content of the Oman ophiolite samples ranges from 5.0 ppm to 11.1 ppm; d11B varies from -1.6? to 16.9?. The B content of the samples from ODP Hole 735B ranges from 1.1 ppm to 7.1 ppm; d11B varies from -4.3? to 24.9?. The general pattern displayed by these samples is one of greatest (and most variable) B enrichment at the top of the crust and least enrichment at the bottom of the section. All of these samples are enriched compared to unaltered MORB, which is believed to have a B content of approximately 0.5 ppm. The d11B values of deeper samples, from Layers 2B and 3, are more variable and generally higher than those from Layer 2A. Boron contents and d11B are not correlated. The data from the DSDP Site 417/418 composites indicate that the d11B of fluid circulating in the upper crust changes only slightly during alteration, increasing by an average of 5.1? with an accompanying decrease in B concentration of 7%. Low temperature alteration appears to be a water-dominated process resulting in minor modification of circulating seawater. A minimum water-rock ratio of 400 is calculated for these samples, implying a minimum low-temperature seawater flux through the upper oceanic crust of 3.4?10**14 l/y. The average B content of altered oceanic crust, as represented by these samples, is 5.2+/-1.7 ppm and the average d11B is 3.4+/-1.1?. This average isotopic composition is measurably different from the apparent average of oceanic sediments, supporting the idea that d11B could be useful for identifying the source(s) of B in island arcs.

In recent years, metalliferous sediments have been discovered overlying newly generated oceanic crust in the East Pacific, North Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and elsewhere (e.g., Boström, 1973; Lalou et al., 1977; Bischoff, 1969; Boström and Fisher, 1971; Cann et al., 1977, respectively). Such material has also been recovered by drilling from sediments lying upon older oceanic crust (Boström et al., 1972, 1976; Horowitz and Cronan, 1976). Hydrothermal circulation of seawater at a spreading ridge results in the leaching of Fe, Mn, and possibly other elements from the basaltic volcanic layer and their transport and discharge into ocean bottom waters, whereupon fine-grained Fe-Mn-rich precipitates form and settle into the ambient sediment (cf. Corliss, 1971; Dasch et al., 1971; Spooner and Fyfe, 1973; Bischoff and Dickson, 1975; Heath and Dymond, 1977; Corliss et al., 1979, Edmond et al., 1979). Mn-rich crusts have also been recovered from active ridges and are inferred to have formed in the vicinity of hydrothermal discharge areas (Scott et al., 1974; Moore and Vogt, 1976; Corliss et al., 1978; Hoffert et al., 1978). The source of the trace elements in the metalliferous deposits is generally not clear. They may be derived from seawater by adsorption onto the precipitates or crusts, or from hydrothermal solutions which have leached them from the basalts. Pb, however, can be used as a geochemical tracer because of the known isotopic compositional differences between oceanic basalts and seawater. Isotopic investigations of Pb in ferruginous sediments from the East Pacific have shown that it has been derived partly or mostly from a basaltic source (Bender et al., 1971; Dasch et al., 1971; Dymond et al., 1973). In the present study, Pb isotopic analyses have been made of a suite of metalliferous sediments (nontronite, Mn-oxide crust, Mn-Fe-oxide mud), pelagic sediments, and basalts from the Galapagos mounds area. The main purposes of the Pb study were to determine the source or sources of Pb in the metalliferous sediments, and whether or not stratigraphic variations exist in the isòtopic composition of Pb in the sediments.

Most deep ocean carbon flux profiles show low and almost constant fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC) in the deep ocean. However, the reason for the non-changing POC fluxes at depths is unknown. This study presents direct measurements of formation, degradation, and sinking velocity of diatom aggregates from laboratory studies performed at 15 °C and 4 °C during a three-week experiment. The average carbon-specific respiration rate during the experiment was 0.12 ± 0.03 at 15 °C, and decreased 3.5-fold when the temperature was lowered to 4 °C. No direct influence of temperature on aggregate sinking speed was observed. Using the remineralisation rate measured at 4 °C and an average particle sinking speed of 150 m d**-1, calculated carbon fluxes were similar to those collected in deep ocean sediment traps from a global data set, indicating that temperature plays a major role for deep ocean fluxes of POC.

A new microtiter-plate dilution method was applied during the expedition ANTARKTIS-XI/2 with RV Polarstern to determine the distribution of copiotrophic and oligotrophic bacteria in the water columns at polar fronts. Twofold serial dilutions were performed with an eight-channel Electrapette in 96-wells plates by mixing 150 µl of seawater with 150 µl of copiotrophic or olitrophic Trypticase-Broth, three times per well. After incubation of about 6 month at 2 °C, turbidities were measured with an eight-channel photometer at 405 nm and combinations of positive test results for three consecutive dilutions chosen and compared with a Most Probable Number table, calculated for 8 replicates and twofold serial dilutions. Densities of 12 to 661 cells/ml for copiotrophs, and 1 to 39 cells/ml for oligotrophs were found. Colony Forming Units on copiotrophic Trypticase-Agar were between 6 and 847 cells/ml, which is in the same range as determined with the MPN method.

On 20 March 2015, a total solar eclipse occurred over Ny-Ålesund (78.9° N, 11.9° E), Svalbard, in the high Arctic. It was the first time that the surface radiation components during the totality of a solar eclipse were measured by a Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) station. With the Ny-Ålesund long-term radiation data set as background (available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.150000), we present here the peculiarities of the radiation components and basic meteorology observed during the eclipse event. The supplementary data set contains the basic BSRN radiation and surface meteorological data in 1 min resolution for March 2015, and is available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.854326. The eclipse radiation data will be a useful auxiliary data set for further studies on micrometeorological surface-atmosphere exchange processes in the Svalbard environment, and may serve as a test case for radiative transfer studies.

This paper focuses on the railway rolling stock circulation problem in rapid transit networks, in which frequencies are high and distances are relatively short. Although the distances are not very large, service times are high due to the large number of intermediate stops required to allow proper passenger flow. The main complicating issue is the fact that the available capacity at depot stations is very low, and both capacity and rolling stock are shared between different train lines. This forces the introduction of empty train movements and rotation maneuvers, to ensure sufficient station capacity and rolling stock availability. However, these shunting operations may sometimes be difficult to perform and can easily malfunction, causing localized incidents that could propagate throughout the entire network due to cascading effects. This type of operation will be penalized with the goal of selectively avoiding them and ameliorating their high malfunction probabilities. Critic trains, defined as train services that come through stations that have a large number of passengers arriving at the platform during rush hours, are also introduced. We illustrate our model using computational experiments drawn from RENFE (the main Spanish operator of suburban passenger trains) in Madrid, Spain. The results of the model, achieved in approximately 1 min, have been received positively by RENFE planners

ABSTRACT The final aim of the research involved in this doctoral thesis is the estimation of the total ice volume of the more than 1600 glaciers of Svalbard, in the Arctic region, and thus their potential contribution to sea-level rise under a global warming scenario. The most accurate calculations of glacier volumes are those based on ice-thicknesses measured by groundpenetrating radar (GPR). However, such measurements are not viable for very large sets of glaciers, due to their cost, logistic difficulties and time requirements, especially in polar or mountain regions. On the contrary, the calculation of glacier areas from satellite images is perfectly viable at global and regional scales, so the volume-area scaling relationships are the most useful tool to determine glacier volumes at global and regional scales, as done for Svalbard in this PhD thesis. As part of the PhD work, we have compiled an inventory of the radio-echo sounded glaciers in Svalbard, and we have performed the volume calculations for more than 80 glacier basins in Svalbard from GPR data. These volumes have been used to calibrate the volume-area relationships derived in this dissertation. Such GPR data have been obtained during fieldwork campaigns carried out by international teams, often lead by the Group of Numerical Simulation in Science and Engineering of the Technical University of Madrid, to which the PhD candidate and her supervisors belong. Furthermore, we have developed a methodology to estimate the error in the volume calculation, which includes a novel technique to calculate the interpolation error for data sets of the type produced by GPR profiling, which show very characteristic data distribution patterns but with very irregular data density. We have derived in this dissertation scaling relationships specific for Svalbard glaciers, exploring the sensitivity of the scaling parameters to different glacier morphologies and adding new variables. In particular, we did experiments aimed to verify whether scaling relationships obtained through characterization of individual glacier shape, slope and size imply significant differences in the estimated volume of the total population of Svalbard glaciers, and whether this partitioning implies any noticeable pattern in the scaling relationship parameters. Our results indicate that, for a fixed value of the factor in the scaling relationship, the exponent of the area in the volume-area relationship decreases as slope and shape increase, whereas size-based classifications do not reveal any clear trend. This means that steep slopes and cirque-type glaciers are less sensitive to changes in glacier area. Moreover, the volumes of the total population of Svalbard glaciers calculated according to partitioning in subgroups by size and slope are smaller (by 1-4%) than that obtained considering all glaciers without partitioning into subgroups, whereas the volumes calculated according to partitioning in subgroups by shape are 3-5% larger. We also did multivariate experiments attempting to optimally predict the volume of Svalbard glaciers from a combination of different predictors. Our results show that a simple power-type V-A model explains 98.6% of the variance. Only the predictor glacier length provides statistical significance when used in addition to the predictor glacier area, though the coefficient of determination decreases as compared with the simpler V-A model. The predictor elevation range did not provide any additional information when used in addition to glacier area. Our estimates of the volume of the entire population of Svalbard glaciers using the different scaling relationships that we have derived along this thesis range within 6890-8106 km3, with estimated relative errors in total volume of the order of 6.6-8.1% The average value of all of our estimates, which could be used as a best estimate for the volume, is 7,504 km3. In terms of sea-level equivalent (SLE), our volume estimates correspond to a potential contribution to sea-level rise within 17-20 mm SLE, averaging 19 _ 2 mm SLE, where the quoted error corresponds to our estimated relative error in volume. For comparison, the estimates using the V-A scaling relations found in the literature range within 13-26 mm SLE, averaging 20 _ 2 mm SLE, where the quoted error represents the standard deviation of the different estimates.

The Actively Heated Fiber Optic (AHFO) method is shown to be capable of measuring soil water content several times per hour at 0.25 m spacing along cables of multiple kilometers in length. AHFO is based on distributed temperature sensing (DTS) observation of the heating and cooling of a buried fiber-optic cable resulting from an electrical impulse of energy delivered from the steel cable jacket. The results presented were collected from 750 m of cable buried in three 240 m colocated transects at 30, 60, and 90 cm depths in an agricultural field under center pivot irrigation. The calibration curve relating soil water content to the thermal response of the soil to a heat pulse of 10 W m−1 for 1 min duration was developed in the lab. This calibration was found applicable to the 30 and 60 cm depth cables, while the 90 cm depth cable illustrated the challenges presented by soil heterogeneity for this technique. This method was used to map with high resolution the variability of soil water content and fluxes induced by the nonuniformity of water application at the surface.

ABSTRACT Biochar is a carbon-rich material obtained after a biomass pyrolysis procedure. This material has aroused in recent years a great interest in the scientific community, mainly for its ability to improve the productivity of soils, influencing the physico-chemical properties of soils and as means of carbon storage, reducing emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere). Despite the interest that may raise this matter, the fact is that to date, no clear conclusions or definitive progress have been done to create a standardization for the commercialization of biochar, due to the variability of its properties (considering the raw material and the reaction conditions in the pyrolysis). This study, based on a thorough analysis of the various existing literature on the subject and, leaving other approaches that could have been taken of the interest of the subject in question, attempts to provide answers to the question about what would be the true potential production of biochar in Spain and what would be the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, which would entail waste management through pyrolysis. In particular, this study has identified the reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and has analyzed whether the production of biochar could increase the organic matter content of Spanish agricultural soils. Firstly, regarding the quantification of emissions reductions, by referring to the values contained in the work, it can be concluded that the reduction of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere would be really remarkable, ranging from 22.53% to 96.12%. Secondly, to increase by 1% the average content of organic matter in the spanish agricultural area would require a contribution of 2.03816*108 t of organic matter, which would demand a minimum of 255.408.361 t of cattle manure biochar and a maximum demand of 1.746.494.190 t of deinking sludge pyrolyzed at 500C. On the other hand, to reach a 3.5%, the demand for biochar would vary from a minimum of 158.937 t, in case of cattle manure biochar at C applied to the Canary Islands (Autonomous Community with less need for input of organic matter), and a maximum of 694.695.081 in case of applying deinking sludge biochar at C to Castilla la Mancha (Autonomous Region, which needs the highest contribution).

RNAs that undergo a rapid site-specific cleavage at low pH have been selected by in vitro selection (the SELEX process). The cleavage does not require the addition of any divalent metal ions, and is in fact inhibited by divalent metal ions, spermine, or high concentrations of monovalent metal ions. This low pH catalyzed cleavage results in a 2′,3′-cyclic phosphate at the 3′ end and a free hydroxyl at the 5′ end. The reaction proceeds with a calculated rate of 1.1 min−1 at room temperature in cacodylate buffer at pH 5.0. The rate of cleavage is dependent on the pH and shows an optimum around pH 4.0. The rate constant is independent of RNA concentration, indicating to an intramolecular reaction. Autocatalytic cleavage at low pH, in the absence of a metal ion requirement, adds to the reaction possibilities that may have existed on the prebiotic earth.

The function of dendritic spines, postsynaptic sites of excitatory input in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS), is still not well understood. Although changes in spine morphology may mediate synaptic plasticity, the extent of basal spine motility and its regulation and function remains controversial. We investigated spine motility in three principal neurons of the mouse CNS: cerebellar Purkinje cells, and cortical and hippocampal pyramidal neurons. Motility was assayed with time-lapse imaging by using two-photon microscopy of green fluorescent protein-labeled neurons in acute and cultured slices. In all three cell types, dendritic protrusions (filopodia and spines) were highly dynamic, exhibiting a diversity of morphological rearrangements over short (<1-min) time courses. The incidence of spine motility declined during postnatal maturation, but dynamic changes were still apparent in many spines in late-postnatal neurons. Although blockade or induction of neuronal activity did not affect spine motility, disruption of actin polymerization did. We hypothesize that this basal motility of dendritic protrusions is intrinsic to the neuron and underlies the heightened plasticity found in developing CNS.
