We report the control of surface relief grating parameters and roughness for phase masks produced using e-beam lithography (EBL) and reactive ion etching (RIE). The relationships between processing conditions, grating parameters, surface roughness and the diffraction efficiency of the zeroth and the two first order transmitted beams are discussed.

This paper presents a new method for the optimisation of the mirror element spacing arrangement and operating temperature of linear Fresnel reflectors (LFR). The specific objective is to maximise available power output (i.e. exergy) and operational hours whilst minimising cost. The method is described in detail and compared to an existing design method prominent in the literature. Results are given in terms of the exergy per total mirror area (W/m2) and cost per exergy (US $/W). The new method is applied principally to the optimisation of an LFR in Gujarat, India, for which cost data have been gathered. It is recommended to use a spacing arrangement such that the onset of shadowing among mirror elements occurs at a transversal angle of 45°. This results in a cost per exergy of 2.3 $/W. Compared to the existing design approach, the exergy averaged over the year is increased by 9% to 50 W/m2 and an additional 122 h of operation per year are predicted. The ideal operating temperature at the surface of the absorber tubes is found to be 300 °C. It is concluded that the new method is an improvement over existing techniques and a significant tool for any future design work on LFR systems

This paper is based upon the findings of a CIMA research project into the way which corporate performance is affected by the performance measurement system adopted. It compares and contrasts the techniques in use in a sample of large companies that use a variety of techniques. We have classified these techniques into 3 types: • Value based management techniques • Stakeholder management techniques • Traditional accounting techniques. The analysis traces the interactions between corporate objectives, decision making criteria, performance measurement systems, and executive incentive schemes in order to develop an understanding of the effects of such techniques upon corporate performance. This paper seeks to provide some answers to the following two questions: • What approach leads to superior performance for a firm? • What is different between these approaches when they are used in practice, as distinct from theory? In doing so we have drawn upon both contingency theory and sociobiology theory to develop a framework for understanding the relationship between the choke of performance measurement system and the resulting performance.

The purpose of the work described here has been to seek methods of narrowing the present gap between currently realised heat pump performance and the theoretical limit. The single most important pre-requisite to this objective is the identification and quantitative assessment of the various non-idealities and degradative phenomena responsible for the present shortfall. The use of availability analysis has been introduced as a diagnostic tool, and applied to a few very simple, highly idealised Rankine cycle optimisation problems. From this work, it has been demonstrated that the scope for improvement through optimisation is small in comparison with the extensive potential for improvement by reducing the compressor's losses. A fully instrumented heat pump was assembled and extensively tested. This furnished performance data, and led to an improved understanding of the systems behaviour. From a very simple analysis of the resulting compressor performance data, confirmation of the compressor's low efficiency was obtained. In addition, in order to obtain experimental data concerning specific details of the heat pump's operation, several novel experiments were performed. The experimental work was concluded with a set of tests which attempted to obtain definitive performance data for a small set of discrete operating conditions. These tests included an investigation of the effect of two compressor modifications. The resulting performance data was analysed by a sophisticated calculation which used that measurements to quantify each dagradative phenomenon occurring in that compressor, and so indicate where the greatest potential for improvement lies. Finally, in the light of everything that was learnt, specific technical suggestions have been made, to reduce the losses associated with both the refrigerant circuit and the compressor.

We investigate the feasibility of simultaneous suppressing of the amplification noise and nonlinearity, representing the most fundamental limiting factors in modern optical communication. To accomplish this task we developed a general design optimisation technique, based on concepts of noise and nonlinearity management. We demonstrate the immense efficiency of the novel approach by applying it to a design optimisation of transmission lines with periodic dispersion compensation using Raman and hybrid Raman-EDFA amplification. Moreover, we showed, using nonlinearity management considerations, that the optimal performance in high bit-rate dispersion managed fibre systems with hybrid amplification is achieved for a certain amplifier spacing – which is different from commonly known optimal noise performance corresponding to fully distributed amplification. Required for an accurate estimation of the bit error rate, the complete knowledge of signal statistics is crucial for modern transmission links with strong inherent nonlinearity. Therefore, we implemented the advanced multicanonical Monte Carlo (MMC) method, acknowledged for its efficiency in estimating distribution tails. We have accurately computed acknowledged for its efficiency in estimating distribution tails. We have accurately computed marginal probability density functions for soliton parameters, by numerical modelling of Fokker-Plank equation applying the MMC simulation technique. Moreover, applying a powerful MMC method we have studied the BER penalty caused by deviations from the optimal decision level in systems employing in-line 2R optical regeneration. We have demonstrated that in such systems the analytical linear approximation that makes a better fit in the central part of the regenerator nonlinear transfer function produces more accurate approximation of the BER and BER penalty. A technique for direct real-time assessment of a distributed feedback fibre laser cavity conditions during operation is demonstrated and used to provide a cavity mode conditioning feedback mechanism to optimise output performance. Negligible wavelength drift is demonstrated over a 52 mW pump power range.

In this thesis, standard algorithms are used to carry out the optimisation of cold-formed steel purlins such as zed, channel and sigma sections, which are assumed to be simply supported and subjected to a gravity load. For zed, channel and sigma section, the local buckling, distortional buckling and lateral-torsional buckling are considered respectively herein. Currently, the local buckling is based on the BS 5950-5:1998 and EN 1993-1-3:2006. The distortional buckling is calculated by the direct strength method employing the elastic distortional buckling which is calculated by three available approaches such as Hancock (1995), Schafer and Pekoz (1998), Yu (2005). In the optimisation program, the lateral-torsional buckling based on BS 5950-5:1998, AISI and analytical model of Li (2004) are investigated. For the optimisation program, the programming codes are written for optimisation of channel, zed and sigma beam. The full study has been coded into a computer-based analysis program (MATLAB).
