Characterization by micro-Raman spectroscopy of polymeric materials used as nuclear track detectors reveals physico-chemical and morphological information on the material's molecular structure. In this work, the nuclear track detector poly(allyl diglycol carbonate), or Columbia Resin 39 (CR-39), was characterized according to the fluence of alpha particles produced by a 226Ra source and chemical etching time. Therefore, damage of the CR-39 chemical structure due to the alpha-particle interaction with the detector was analyzed at the molecular level. It was observed that the ionization and molecular excitation of the CR-39 after the irradiation process entail cleavage of chemical bonds and formation of latent track. In addition, after the chemical etching, there is also loss of polymer structure, leading to the decrease of the group density C-O-C (∼888 cm-1), CH=CH (∼960 cm -1), C-O (∼1110 cm-1), C-O-C (∼1240 cm -1), C-O (∼1290 cm-1), C-O (∼1741 cm -1), -CH2- (∼2910 cm-1), and the main band -CH2- (∼2950 cm-1). The analyses performed after irradiation and chemical etching led to a better understanding of the CR-39 molecular structure and better comprehension of the process of the formation of the track, which is related to chemical etching kinetics. The superoxide dismutase (TfSOD) gene from the extremely thermophilic bacterium Thermus filiformis was cloned and expressed at high levels in mesophilic host. The purified enzyme displayed approximately 25 kDa band in the SDS-PAGE, which was further confirmed as TfSOD by mass spectrometry. The TfSOD was characterized as a cambialistic enzyme once it had enzymatic activity with either manganese or iron as cofactor. TfSOD showed thermostability at 65, 70 and 80°C. The amount of enzyme required to inhibit 50% of pyrogallol autoxidation was 0·41, 0·56 and 13·73 mg at 65, 70 and 80°C, respectively. According to the circular dichroism (CD) spectra data, the secondary structure was progressively lost after increasing the temperature above 70°C. The 3-dimensional model of TfSOD with the predicted cofactor binding corroborated with functional and CD analysis. © 2013 The Society for Applied Microbiology.

The effect of amorphous (am-), monoclinic (m-), and tetragonal (t-) ZrO2 phase on the physicochemical and catalytic properties of supported Cu catalysts for ethanol conversion was studied. The electronic parameters of Cu/ZrO2 were determined by in situ XAS, and the surface properties of Cu/ZrO2 were defined by XPS and DRIFTS of CO-adsorbed. The results demonstrated that the kind of ZrO2 phase plays a key role in the determination of structure and catalytic properties of Cu/ZrO 2 catalysts predetermined by the interface at Cu/ZrO2. The electron transfer between support and Cu surface, caused by the oxygen vacancies at m-ZrO2 and am-ZrO2, is responsible for the active sites for acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate formation. The highest selectivity to ethyl acetate for Cu/m-ZrO2 catalyst up to 513 K was caused by the optimal ratio of Cu0/Cu+ species and the high density of basic sites (O2-) associated with the oxygen mobility from the bulk m-ZrO2. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. This paper reports the influence of Sr- and Ca-substitution on the structural and ferroelectric properties of Pb1-xSrxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 (PSZT) and Pb1-xCaxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 (PCZT) ceramic systems. The dielectric measurements show that these substitutions cause a diffuse behavior in the dielectric permittivity curves for all samples. According to the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra collected at Ti K- and LIII-edge, when Pb was replaced by Sr or Ca, a decrease in the local distortion around Ti atoms in the TiO6 octahedron could be observed. The O K-edge XANES spectra also revealed that the hybridization between O 2p and Pb 6sp states decreased as the amount of Sr or Ca atoms increased. Based on these results, it was possible to ascertain that the ferroelectric behavior in PSZT and PCZT samples bears a close correlation to the hybridization weakening between O 2p and Pb 6 sp states. © 2013 by American Scientific Publishers.

Recently soluble melanin derivatives have been obtained by a synthetic procedure carried out in DMSO (D-melanin). In this work a comparative study of the structural characteristics of synthetic melanin derivatives obtained by oxidation of L-DOPA in H2O and DMSO are presented. To this end, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy as well as proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance techniques has been employed. In addition, aging effects have been investigated for D-melanin. The results suggest that sulfonate groups (-SO2CH3) from the oxidation of DMSO, are incorporated into melanin, which confers protection to the phenolic hydroxyl group present in its structure. The solubility of D-melanin in DMSO is attributed to the presence of these groups. When D-melanin is left in air for long time periods, the sulfonate groups leave the structure, and an insoluble compound is obtained. NaOH and water have been used, in order to accelerate the release of the sulfonate groups attached to D-melanin, thereby corroborating the proposed structure and the synthesis mechanism. © 2013.

Synthesis, structural and spectroscopic characterizations, molecular modeling and antimycobacterial assays of new silver(I) complexes with two Schiff bases - MBDA and MBDB - are reported. The complexes [Ag(MBDA) 2]NO3, or AgMBDA, and [Ag(MBDB)NO3] or AgMBDB, were obtained by the reaction of the respective ligands with silver(I) nitrate in methanol. The Schiff bases were previously obtained by mixing ethylenediamine or 1,3-diaminopropane with p-anisaldehyde. The characterizations of the complexes were based on elemental (C, H and N) and thermal (TG-DTA) analyses and 13C and 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopic measurements, as well as X-ray structure determination for AgMBDA. Spectroscopic data predicted by DFT calculations are in agreement with the experimental data for the AgMBDA complex. The AgMBDA complex has a monomeric structure with a molar proportion 1:2 Ag/ligand, while AgMBDB presents a 1:1 proportion. The complexes AgMBDA and AgMBDB showed to be more effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis than antibacterial agent silver sulfadiazine - SSD. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tungsten oxide/titania (WO3/TiO2) nanopowders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method which varied the WO3 content between 0 and 10 mol%. The powders were thermally treated in a conventional furnace and their structural, microstructural and electric properties were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometry, N 2 physisorption, NH3 chemisorption, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) in situ XANES and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and Raman spectrometry confirmed the homogeneous distribution of an amorphous WO3 phase in the TiO 2 matrix which stabilized the anatase phase through the generation of [TiO5·V0] or [TiO5·V 0] complex sites. Conventional TPR-H2 (temperature programmed reduction) along with XANES TPR-H2 and XANES TPR-EtOH showed that WO3/TiO2 sample reduction occurs through the formation of these complex clusters. Moreover, the addition of WO3 promoted an increase in the surface acidity of doped samples as revealed by NH3 chemisorption. The WO3/TiO2 bulk-ceramic samples were further used to estimate their potential application in a humidity sensor in the range of 15-85% relative humidity. Probable reasons that lead to the different humidity sensor responses of samples were given based on the structural and surface characterizations. Correlation between the sensing performance of the sensor and its structural features are also discussed. Although all samples responded as a humidity sensor, the W2T sample (2 mol% added WO3) excelled for sensitivity due to the increase in acid sites, optimum mean pore size and pore size distribution. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Breast cancer is a public health problem throughout the world. Moreover, breast cancer cells have a great affinity for hydroxyapatite, leading to a high occurrence of bone metastasis. In this work we developed a bio-nanocomposite (bio-NCP) in order to use such affinity in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The bio-NCP consists of magnetic nanoparticles of Mn and Zn ferrite inside a polymeric coating (chitosan) modified with nanocrystals of apatite. The materials were characterized with synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction (XPD), Time-of-Flight Neutron Powder Diffraction (NPD), Fourier Transformed Infra-red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and magnetic measurement with a Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS). We obtained ferrite nanoparticles with a high inversion degree of the spinel structure regarding the Fe and Mn, but with all the Zn in the A site. The coating of such nanoparticles with chitosan had no notable effects to the ferrite microstructure. In addition, the polymeric surface can be easily modified with apatite nanocrystals since the hydration of the bio-NCP during synthesis can be controlled. The resulting bio-NCP presents a spherical shape with a narrow size distribution and high magnetic response at room temperature and is a very promising material for early diagnosis of breast cancer and its treatment. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

A castanha-do-Brasil (Bertholletia excelsea H. B. K.) destaca-se por seus elevados teores em lipídios e proteínas de alta qualidade biológica, parâmetros que justificam a necessidade de maiores pesquisas e incentivos para a elaboração de novos produtos comerciais. No presente estudo, busca-se identificar novas formas de aproveitamento tecnológico dessas amêndoas pela indústria alimentícia, através de seu processamento sobre a forma de farinha sem alteração do teor energético. Os resultados após sua elaboração mostraram um produto com alto valor energético 431,48 kcal.100 g–1, teor de proteína de 45,92 g.100 g–1 e fibra alimentar de 17,14%. As análises térmicas indicam que a introdução de outro componente proteico, como o isolado proteico de soja, não altera as reações e comportamentos térmicos. Já as morfológicas evidenciaram estruturas granulares semelhantes à estrutura das matrizes de proteínas globulares. Constata-se que, após o processamento e obtenção de farinha, o produto mantém seu alto teor energético-proteico e, ao ser submetido a altas temperaturas, mantém suas características.

The 4340 are classified as ultra-high strength steels used by the aviation industry and aerospace applications such as aircraft landing gear and several structural applications, usually in quenched and tempered condition. In this situation occurs reduction of toughness, which encourages the study of multiphasic and bainitic structures, in order to maintain strength without loss of toughness. In this study, ferritic-pearlitic structure was compared to bainitic and martensitic structure, identified by the reagents Nital, LePera and Sodium Metabisulfite. Sliding wear tests of the type pin-on-disk were realized and the results related to the microstructure of these materials and also to their hardnesses. It is noted that these different microstructures had very similar behavior, concluding that all three tested pairs can be used according to the request level.

Soil CO2 emission (F-CO2) is influenced by chemical, physical and biological factors that affect the production of CO2 in the soil and its transport to the atmosphere. F-CO2 varies in time and space depending on environmental conditions, including the management of the agricultural area. The aim of this study was to investigate the spatial variability structure of F-CO2 and soil attributes in a mechanically harvested sugarcane area (green harvest) using fractal dimension (D-F) derived from isotropic variograms at different scales (fractograms). F-CO2 showed an overall average of 1.51 mu mol CO2 m(-2) s(-1) and correlated significantly (P < 0.05) with soil physical attributes, such as soil bulk density, air-filled pore space, macroporosity and microporosity. Topologically significant DF values were obtained from the characterization of F-CO2 at medium and large scales (above 20 m), with values of 2.92 and 2.90, respectively. The variations in D-F with scales indicate that the spatial variability structure of F-CO2 was similar to that observed for soil temperature and total pore volume and was the inverse of that observed for other soil attributes, such as soil moisture, soil bulk density, microporosity, air-filled pore space, silt and clay content, pH, available phosphorus and the sum of bases. Thus, the spatial variability structure of F-CO2 presented a significant relationship with the spatial variability structure for most soil attributes, indicating the possibility of using fractograms as a tool to better describe the spatial dependence of variables along the scale.
