Autocatalytic duplex Ni-P/Ni-W-P coatings were deposited on AZ31B magnesium alloy using stabilizer free nickel carbonate bath. Some of the coated specimens were passivated in chromate solution with and without heat treatment. Plain Ni-P coatings were also prepared for comparison. Coatings were characterized for their surface morphology, composition and corrosion resistance. Energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDX) showed that the phosphorous content in the Ni-P coating is 6 wt.% and for Ni-W-P it reduced to 3 wt.% due to the codeposition of tungsten in the Ni-P coating. Marginal increase in P and W contents was observed on passivated coupons along with Cr (0.18 wt.%) and O (2.8 wt.%) contents. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) examination of these coating surfaces exhibited the nodular morphology. Chromate passivated surfaces showed the presence of uniformly distributed bright Ni particles along with nodules. Potenfiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies were carried out in deaerated 0.15 M NaCI solution to find out the corrosion resistance of the coatings. Among the coatings developed, duplex-heat treated-passivated (duplex-HIP) coatings showed lower corrosion current density (i(corr)) and higher polarization resistance (R-p) indicating the improved corrosion resistance. The charge transfer resistance (R-ct) value obtained for the duplex-HIP was about 170 times higher compared to that for Ni P coating. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) nanopowders were synthesised at different pH using co-precipitation method. The effect of pH on the phase formation of YIG is characterised using XRD, TEM, FTIR and TG/DTA. From the Scherer formula, the particle sizes of the powders were found to be 13, 19 and 28 nm for pH=10, 11 and 12 respectively. It is found that as the pH of the solution increase the particle size is also increases. It is also clear from the TG/DTA curves that as the pH is increasing the weight losses were found to be small. The nanopowders were sintered at 600, 700, 800 and 900 degrees C for 5 h using conventional sintering method. The phase formation is completed at 800 degrees C/5 h which is correlated with TG/DTA. The average grain size of the samples is found to be similar to 161 nm. The high values of M-s=23 emu g(-1) and H-c=22 Oe were recorded for the sample sintered at 900 degrees C.

The addition of B, up to about 0.1 wt%, to Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) reduces its as-cast grain and colony sizes by an order of magnitude. In this paper, the creep resistance of this alloy modified with 0.06 and 0.11 wt% B additions was investigated in the temperature range of 475-550 degrees C and compared with that of the base alloy. Conventional dead-weight creep tests as well as stress relaxation tests were employed for this purpose. Experimental results show that the B addition enhances both elevated temperature strength and creep properties of Ti64, especially at the lower end of the temperatures investigated. The steady state creep rate in the alloy with 0.11 wt% B was found to be an order of magnitude lower than that in the base alloy, and both the strain at failure as well as the time for rupture increases with the B content. These marked improvements in the creep resistance due to B addition to Ti64 were attributed primarily to the increased number of inter-phase interfaces - a direct consequence of the microstructural refinement that occurs with the B addition - that provide resistance to dislocation motion. Thermo-mechanically processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy, with (0.1 wt.%) and without boron addition, has been subjected to tensile test under superplastic deformation conditions (Temperature, T = 850 degrees C and initial strain rate, (epsilon) over dot = 3 x 10(-4) s(-1)). The boron added alloy exhibited higher elongation (similar to 430%) in comparison to the base alloy without boron (similar to 365%). Superior ductility of the boron added alloy has been attributed to an enhanced alpha/beta interfacial boundary sliding. This was caused by riotous dynamic globularization leading to the abundant presence of equiaxed primary alpha grains with refined sizes and narrow distribution in the deforming microstructure. Cavities do occur around TiB particles during deformation; the cavities are, however, extremely localized and do not cause macroscopic cracking. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study is aimed toward obtaining near spherical microstructural features of Rheocast A380 aluminum alloy. Cooling slope (CS) technique has been used to generate semisolid slurry from the superheated alloy melt. Spherodization of primary grains is the heart of semisolid processing which improves mechanical properties significantly in the parts cast from semisolid state compared to the conventional casting processes. Keeping in view of the desired microstructural morphology, i.e., rosette or spherical shape of primary alpha-Al phase, successive slurry samples have been collected during melt flow and oil quenched to investigate the microstructure evolution mechanism. Conventionally cast A380 Al alloy sample shows dendritic grains surrounded by large eutectic phase whereas finer, near spherical grains have been observed within the cooling slope processed slurry and also in the solidified castings which confirms the effectiveness of semisolid processing of the alloy following cooling slope technique. Grain refiner addition into the alloy melt is found to have favorable effect which leads to the generation of finer primary grains within the slurry with higher degree of sphericity.

Low cycle fatigue behavior of an O+B2 alloy was evaluated at 650 degrees C in ambient atmosphere under fully reversed total axial strain controlled mode. Three different microstructures, namely equiaxed O plus aged B2 (fine O plates in B2 matrix), lenticular O laths plus aged B2 and a pancake composite microstructure comprising equiaxed alpha 2, lenticular O and aged B2, were selected to study the effect of microstructure on low cycle fatigue behavior in this class of alloys. Distinct well-defined trends were observed in the cyclic stress-strain response curves depending on the microstructure. The cyclic stress response was examined in terms of softening or hardening and correlated with microstructural features and dislocation behavior. Fatigue life was analyzed in terms of standard Coffin-Manson and Basquin plots and for all microstructures a prevailing elastic strain regime was identified, with a single slope for microstructures equiaxed and composite and a double slope for lenticular O laths. The recrystallization behaviour of cold-rolled nanocrystalline (nc) nickel has been studied at temperatures between 573 and 1273 K using bulk texture measurements and electron back-scattered diffraction. The texture in nc nickel is different from that of its microcrystalline counterpart, consisting of a strong Goss (G) and rotated Goss (RG) components at 773 K instead of the typical cube component. The texture evolution in nc Ni has been attributed to the prior deformation textures and nucleation advantage of G and RG grains.

Mg and its alloys become natural biomaterials as the elemental Mg is found in the human body in abundance and their mechanical properties being akin to the natural bone as well as due to their inherent bioabsorbable/bioresorbable property. This paper discusses the development of new Mg alloys and their corrosion characteristics in detail. The latest advancements in coating of Mg alloys to control their degradation rate are also reviewed along with the future challenges that need to be addressed.

This paper attempts to gain an understanding of the effect of lamellar length scale on the mechanical properties of two-phase metal-intermetallic eutectic structure. We first develop a molecular dynamics model for the in-situ grown eutectic interface followed by a model of deformation of Al-Al2Cu lamellar eutectic. Leveraging the insights obtained from the simulation on the behaviour of dislocations at different length scales of the eutectic, we present and explain the experimental results on Al-Al2Cu eutectic with various different lamellar spacing. The physics behind the mechanism is further quantified with help of atomic level energy model for different length scale as well as different strain. An atomic level energy partitioning of the lamellae and the interface regions reveals that the energy of the lamellae core are accumulated more due to dislocations irrespective of the length-scale. Whereas the energy of the interface is accumulated more due to dislocations when the length-scale is smaller, but the trend is reversed when the length-scale is large beyond a critical size of about 80 nm. In this work, a combined forming and fracture limit diagram, fractured void coalescence and texture analysis have been experimentally evaluated for the commercially available aluminum alloy Al 8011 sheet annealed at different temperatures viz. 200 degrees C, 250 degrees C, 300 degrees C and 350 degrees C. The sheets were examined at different annealing temperatures on microstructure, tensile properties, formability and void coalescence. The fractured surfaces of the formed samples were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and these images were correlated with fracture behavior and formability of sheet metals. Formability of Al 8011 was studied and examined at various annealing temperatures using their bulk X-ray crystallographic textures and ODF plots. Forming limit diagrams, void coalescence parameters and crystallographic textures were correlated with normal anisotropy of the sheet metals annealed at different temperatures. This paper highlights the role of globular microstructure on the weldability of semi-solid processed aluminum alloys via high temperature flow behavior. The investigation was carried out on the joining of thixocast A356 aluminum alloy components by friction welding. A thermomechanical model was developed to predict the temperature and stress distributions, as well as to identify the suitable and safe range of parameters. Good comparisons between numerical and experimental results were observed. In addition, metallographic examinations and hardness and tensile tests of the welded samples were carried out. It was found that the tensile strength of the joint is higher than the tensile strength of the parent material for the optimum set of parameters. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. The micromechanical aspects of rolling texture development in Ni-40 wt.% Co alloy during very large reductions (up to epsilon(t) = 3.9) have been studied. The alloy showed a typical Cu-type texture up to a true strain of epsilon(t) = 3; however, the texture undergoes an abrupt transition to Bs-type on further rolling to epsilon(t) approximate to 4. (The Bs-type texture, here, comprises almost equal fractions of Goss and Bs components.) Microstructural observations, at early stages, show that deformation is accommodated entirely by slip, and very little presence of deformation twinning is observed to explain the texture transition. However, at much higher reduction levels, micrographs show a high fraction of Cu-type shear bands. These bands are predominantly found in Cu-oriented grains and the crystallites inside the shear bands are preferentially oriented towards Goss, which could explain the final texture evolution. Grain boundary sliding remains a dominant deformation process during creep in both nanocrystalline and submicron-grained zirconia. The level of segregation of Y to grain boundaries is reduced by a factor of similar to 2 in nanocrystals. However, a scaling relationship for compression creep was valid in a 3 mol.% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia with grain sizes in the range of similar to 65-400 nm, indicating the same deformation mechanism over this range of grain sizes. A combined set of thermo-mechanical steps recommended for high strength beta Ti alloy are homogenization, deformation, recrystallization, annealing and ageing steps in sequence. Recrystallization carried out above or below beta transus temperature generates either beta annealed (lath type morphology of alpha) or bimodal (lath+globular morphology of alpha) microstructure. Through variations in heat treatment parameters at these processing steps, wide ranges of length scales of features have been generated in both types of microstructures in a near beta Ti alloy, Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti-5553). 0.2% Yield strength (YS) has been correlated to various microstructural features and associated heat treatment parameters. Relative importance of microstructural features in influencing YS has been identified. Process parameters at different steps have been identified and recommended for attaining different levels of YS for this near beta Ti alloy. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Wing morphing is one of the emerging methodology towards improving aerodynamic efficiency of flight vehicle structures. In this paper a morphing structural element is designed and studied which has its origin in the well known chiral structures. The new aspect of design and functionality explored in this paper is that the chiral cell is actuated using thermal Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator wires to provide directional motion. Such structure utilizes the potential of different actuations concepts based on actuator embedded in the chiral structure skin. This paper describes a new class of chiral cell structure with integrated SMA wire for actuation. Chiral topological constructs are obtained by considering passive and active load path decoupling and sub-optimal shape changes. Single cell of chiral honeycomb with actuators are analyzed using finite element simulation results and experiments. To this end, a multi-cell plan-form is characterized showing interesting possibilities in structural morphing applications. The applicability of the developed chiral cell to flexible wing skin, variable stiffness based design and controlling longitudinal-to-transverse stiffness ratio are discussed.
