The two major issues in mining industry are work safety and protection of ground environment when carrying on underground mining activities. Cut-and-fill mining method is increasingly applied in China owing to its advantages of controlling ground pressure and protecting the ground environment effectively. However, some cut-and-fill mines such as Jinchuan nickel mine which has big ore body, broken rock mass and high geostress have unique characteristics on the law of ground pressure and rock mass movement that distinguish from other mining methods. There are still many problems unknown and it is necessary for the further analysis. In this dissertation, vast field survey, geology trenching and relative data analysis are carried out. The distribution of ground fissures and the correlation of the fissures with the location of underground ore body is presented. Using of monitoring data by three-dimension fissure meter and GPS in Jinchuan Deposit Ⅱ, the rule of the surface deformation and the reason of ground fissures generation are analyzed. It is shown that the stress redistribution in surrounding rocks resulting from mining, the existence of the void space underground and the influence of on-going mining activities are three main reasons for the occurrence of ground fissures. Based on actual section planes of No.1 ore body, a large-scale 3D model is established. By this model, the complete process of excavation and filling is simulated and the law of rock mass movement and stability caused by Cut-and-fill Mining is studied. According to simulation results, it is concluded that the deformation of ground surface is still going on developing; the region of subsidence on the ground surface is similar with a circle; the area on the hanging wall side is larger than one on the lower wall side; the contour plots show the centre of subsidence lay on the hanging wall side and the position is near the ore body boundary of 1150m and 1250m where ore body is the thickest. Along strike-line of Jinchuan Deposit Ⅱ, the deformation at the middle of filling body is larger than that in the two sides. Because of the irregular ore body, stress concentrates at the boundary of ore body. With the process of excavation and filling, the high stress release and the stress focus disappear on the hanging wall side. The cut-and-fill mechanism is studied based on monitoring data and numerical simulation. The functions of filling body are discussed. In this dissertation, it is concluded that the stress of filling body is just 2MPa, but the stress of surrounding rock mass is 20MPa. We study the surface movement influenced by the elastic modulus of backfill. The minimal value of the elastic modulus of backfill which can guarantee the safety production of cut-and-fill mine is obtained. Finally, based on the real survey results of the horizontal ore layer and numerical simulation, it is indicated that the horizontal ore layer has destroyed. Key words: cut-and-filling mining, 3D numerical simulation, field monitoring, rock mass movement, cut-and-filling mechanism, the elastic modulus of backfill, the horizontal ore layer

The Xiao-wan Power Station is the second highest arch dam in the world under construction. The height of the dam is about 292m. Large-scale excavation in the dam foundation of Xiao-wan Power Station has brought intensive unloading phenomenon. We collected a large number of firsthand data on unloaded rock mass in dam foundation, which supplies a natural testing ground for researching unloaded rock mass after excavation. Detailed study was carried out on the parameters of unloaded rock mass in the dam foundation of Xiao-wan Power Station. The study is not only importance for the Xiao-wan Power Station, but also has important instruction significance to similar projects in the Southwest of China. In order to study the mechanical parameters of unloaded rock mass, large field and laboratory tests were carried out. The test results showed the size effect of the sample is obvious. The change of deformation modulus of rock is not obvious. However, the Poisson's ratio of rock is increased under unloaded condition, its value is even more than 0.5. The theoretical forecasted results is accordance to the field tests including sound wave data and deformation monitoring data, which shows the forecasted results were reasonable. The soften yield criterion was adopted in the thesis to study the characteristics of the brittle rock mass in order to simulate their brittle failures. Based on the study results above, the transform of the structural plane network model to the numerical one was carried out, which made it feasible to consider the influence of large amount joints on the mechanical characteristic of rock mass in the numerical analyses. Using a factor, the degree of the damage or strengthen of rock mass can be determined rapidly, which proposed a rapid and feasible method for the determination of the parameters of rock mass.

The great deal of joints and faults , existing in the rock mass , are the leading cause of discontinuous rock mass. Structural planes not only destroy the integrality of rock mass, but also lead nonlinearity、heterogeneity、anisotropy and failure mode on mechanical properties of rock mass. Therefore the selection of strength and deformation parameters was very difficult. In practical rock mass engineering, equivalent parameters of rock mass were selected by the method of expert experience and engineering analogy. Based on the fine description of discontinuous joints in the type Ⅳ and Ⅴ rock mass and geological survey datum in situ, models was obtained by generalizing the structure of rock mass by the method of statistical analysis. Model intensity and deformation test were carried out on the true triaxial apparatus. Intermediate principle stress effect, anisotropy and dimension effect of discontinuous rock mass were considered in the model test. 3-D correction to Hoek-Brown empirical criterion was done by analysed the test datum. Detailed works were listed as follows: (1) The factors influenced intensity and deformation of discontinuous joints rock mass were the value ofcontinuity, density and included angle of joints and anisotropy of joint plane. True triaxial intensity and deformation tests were carried out by considering above factors. The influence rule was obtained and corresponding relation formulary was established; (2) Based on the true triaxial tests under different stress path and load modes, we obtain intensity and deformation rule of rock mass; (3) Based on a great deal of true triaxial tests and other test datum, correction to the Hoek-Brown empirical criterion was done in the chapter 4. The intermediate principle stress was considered in the corrected formulary. It indicated that the formulary was applicable under a certain condition. In addition, the yield plane form of corrected Hoek-Brown empirical criterion under principle stress space was described in the paper. And the question of corner of yield plane was discussed; (4) Based on the single discontinuity theory, the three-dimensional intensity formulary of discontinuous joint rock mass was established. Correction to the intensity formulary was done considering intermediate principle stress effect. We may obtain the conclusion that the intensity of the discontinuous joint rock mass was influenced on compositive factors. They were 、 、continuity、internal frictional angle and cohesiveness of joint plane and rock; (5) The results of the true triaxial model test was applied into parameters evaluation of dam foundation rock mass of JinPing hydropower station. For there were abundant ophicalcite in the dam foundation, the interval of intensity and formation parameters influenced on continuity were determined based on test datum. (6) Especial mould for prismatic jointing model was designed. True triaxial intensity and deformation tests by Basalt with prismatic jointing were carried out. The influence of intermediate principle stress, stress path, anisotropy effect and dimensional effect to intensity and deformation was discussed in the chapter 6. The work of (3)、(4)、(6) was significative supplement and innovation to current test and theory.

As we all know, rock-like materials will absolutely show very different mechanical properties under the compressive stress and tensile stress respectively. Similarly, under the dynamic compressive stress or dynamic tensile stress, the characteristics of the dynamics showed by the rock-like materials also have great differences from the mechanical behavior under static force. Studying their similarities and differences in rock mechanics theory and practical engineering will be of great significance. Generally, there are compression modulus of elasticity and tensile modulus of elasticity corresponding to compressive stress state and the tensile stress state in the rock. Both the two kinds of elastic modulus play an extremely important role in calculation of engineering mechanics. Their reliability directly affects the accuracy and reliability of the calculation results of internal stress field and displacement field of engineering rock mass. At present, it is easy to obtain the compression modulus of elasticity in laboratory; but it is very difficult to determine the tensile modulus of elasticity with direct tensile test due to that direct tensile test is difficult to perform in laboratory in general. In order to solve this problem, this thesis invents and develops several indirect test methods to determine the static or dynamic tensile modulus of elasticity of rock-type materials with high reliability and good interoperability. For the static tensile modulus of elasticity, the analytical stress field solution has been given out for the Brazilian disc under the radial and linear concentration load with Airy stress function method. At the same time, the stress field has been modeled for the Brazilian disc test by using the finite element software of ANSYS and ADINA. The analytical stress field solution is verified to be right by comparatively researching the analytical stress field solution and the numerical stress field solution. Based on the analytical stress field solution, this thesis proposes that a strain gauge is pasted at the Brazilian disc center along the direction perpendicular to the applied force to indirectly determine the static tensile modulus of elasticity, and related measurement theory also has been developed. The method proposed here has good feasibility and high accuracy verified by the experimental results. For the dynamic tensile modulus of elasticity, two measuring methods and theories are invented here. The first one is that the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar is used to attract the Brazilian disc to generate the dynamic load, make the dynamic tensile stress is formed at the Brazilian disc center; and also a strain gauge is pasted at the Brazilian disc center to record the deformation. The second is that, in the Hopkinson effect phenomenon, the reflection tensile stress wave is formed when the shock wave propagates to the free end of cylindrical rock bar and reflect, which can make the rock bar is under dynamic tensile stress state; and some strain gauges are pasted at the appropriate place on the rock bar to record the strain coursed by the tensile or compressive stress wave. At last, the dynamic tensile modulus of elasticity can be determined by the recorded strain and the dynamic tensile stress which can be determined by related theories developed in this thesis.

Rockmass movement due to mining steep metallic ore body is a considerable question in the surface movement and deformation issue caused by underground mining. Research on coal mining induced rockmass movement and its prediction problem have been performed for a long-term, and have achieved great progress at home and abroad. However, the rockmass movement caused by mining steep metal mine is distinctivly different from coal seam mining.. Existing surface movement laws and deformation prediction methods are not applicable to the rockmass movement caused by mining steep metal mine. So far the home and abroad research to this theory is presently at an early stage, and there isn’t mature theory or practical prediction method, which made a great impact on production. In this paper, the research object—Jinchuan nickel mine, which is typical steep metal mine, characterized by complex geological conditions, developed faults, cracked rockmass, high geostress, and prominent engineering stability problems. In addition, backfill mining method is used in the mine, the features of rockmass movement caused by this mining method are also different from other mining methods. In this paper, the laws of rock mass movement, deformation and destroy mechanism, and its prediction were analyzed based on the collection of data, detailed in-sit engineering geology survey, ground movement monitoring by GPS, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. According to the GPS monitoring of ground surface movement, ground subsidence basin with apparent asymmetry is developing, the influence scope is larger in the upper faulted block than in the lower faulted block, and the center of ground movement is moving along the upper faulted block direction with increasing depth of mining. During the past half and seven years, the largest settlement has amounted to 1287.5mm, and corresponding horizontal displacement has amounted to 664.6mm. On the ground surface, two fissure belts show a fast-growing trend of closure. To sum up, mining steep metal mine with backfill method also exist the same serious problem of rockmass movement hazards. Fault, as a low intensity zone in rockmass, when it located within the region of mining influence, the change of potential energy mainly consumed in fault deformation associated with rockmass structure surface friction, which is the essence of displacement and stress barrier effects characterized by fault rupture zone. when steep fault located in the tensile deformation region incurred by underground excavation, no matter excavation in hangingwall or in footwall of the fault, there will be additional tensile stress on the vertical fault plane and decrease in the shear strength, and always showing characteristics of normal fault slip, which is the main reason of fault escarpment appeared on the ground surface. The No.14 shaft deformation and failure is triggered by fault activation, which showed with sidewall move, rupture, and break down features as the main form of a concentrated expression of fault effects. The size and orientation of principal stress in surrounding rock changed regularly with mining; therefore, roadway deformation and damage at different stages have different characteristics and distribution models. During the process of mining, low-intensity weak structures surface always showed the most obvious reaction, accompany with surface normal stress decrease and shear strength bring down, to some extent, occurred with relative slide and deformation. Meanwhile, the impact of mining is a relatively long process, making the structure surface effect of roadway deformation and damage more prominent than others under the influence of mining. Roadway surrounding rockmass deformation caused by the change of strain energy density field after excavation mainly belongs to elastic deformation, and the correspondented damage mainly belongs to brittle rupture, in this circumstance, surrounding rockmass will not appear large deformation. The large deformation of surrounding rockmass can only be the deformation associated with structure surface friction or the plastic deformation of itself, which mainly caused by the permanent self-weigh volume force, and long-term effect of mining led to the durability of this deformation Good pitting fill effect and supporting effect of backfill, as well as the friction of rockmass structure surface lead to obvious macro-rockmass movement with long-lag characteristics. In addition, the loss of original intensity and new structure surface arisen increased flexibility in rockmass and fill deformation in structure surface, which made the time required for rockmass potential energy translate into deformation work associated with plastic deformation and structure surface friction consumed much, and to a large extent, eliminated the time needed to do those plastic work during repeated mining, all of which are the fundamental reason of rockmass movement aftereffect more significant than before. Mining steep deposits in high tectonic stress area and in gravity stress area have different movement laws and deformation mechanism. The steep deposit, when the vertical size of the mining areas is smaller than the horizontal size of the orebody, no matter mining in gravity stress area or in high tectonic stress area, they have similar features of ground movement with mining horizontal orebody; contrarily, there will appear double settlement centers on the ground surface under the condition of mining in high tectonic stress area, while there will always be a single center under the other condition. Meanwhile the ground movement lever, scale of mining influence area and macro features of ground movement, deformation and fracture are also different from mining in gravity stress area, and the fundamental reason lies in the impact of orientation of the maximum principal stress on rock movement features in in-site rock stress field. When mining thick and steep deposit, the ground surface movement and deformation characteristic curves are significantly different from excavating the horizontal ore bed and thin steep deposit. According to the features of rockmass movement rate, the development process of mining-induced rockmass movement is divided into three stages: raising stage, steadily stage and gradually decay stage. Considering the actual exploitation situation, GPS monitoring results and macro-characteristics of surface movement, the current subsidence pattern of Jinchuan No.2 mine is in the early stage of development. Based on analysis of surface movement rate, surface subsidence rate increase rapidly when mining in double lever at the same time, and reach its peak until the exploitation model ended. When double lever mining translate into single, production decreased, surface subsidence rate suddenly start to reduce and maintain a relatively low value, and the largest subsidence center will slowly move along with the hangingwall ore body direction with increasing depth of mining, at the same time, the scope and extent of subsidence in footwall ore body will begin magnify, and a sub-settlement center will appear on ground surface, accompanied with the development and closure trend of ground fissure, the surrounding rockmass of shaft and roadway will be confronted to more frequent and severe deformation and failure, and which will have a negative impact on the overall stability of No.2 mine mining. On the premise of continuity of rockmass movement, gray system model can be used in ground rockmass movement prediction for good results. Under the condition of backfill mining step by step, the loose effect of compact status of the hard, broken rockmass led to lower energy release rate, although surrounding rockmass has high elastic energy, loose and damage occurred in the horizontal ore body, which made the mining process safety without any large geological hazards. During the period of mining the horizontal ore body to end, in view of its special “residual support role”, there will be no large scale rockmass movement hazards. Since ground surface movement mainly related to the intensity of mining speed and backfill effect, on the premise of constant mining speed, during the period of mining the horizontal ore body to end, the rate of ground surface rockmass movement and deformation won’t have sudden change.

In the engineering reinforcement of-rock and soil mass, engineers must consider how to obtain better reinforcing effect at the cost of less reinforcing expense, which, in fact, is the aim of reinforcement design. In order to accomplish the purpose, they require not only researching the material used to reinforce and its structure, but also taking into account of several important geological factors, such as the structure and property of rock and soil mass. How to improve the reinforcing effect according to engineering geomechanical principle at the respect of the reinforcement of engineering soil and rock mass is studied and discussed in this paper. The author studies the theory, technology and practice of geotechnical reinforcement based on engineering geomechanics, taking example for the soil treatment of Zhengzhou Airport, the effect analysis of reinforcement to the slope on the left bank of Wuqiangxi Hydropower Station and the reinforcing design of the No. 102 Landslide and unique sand-slide slope on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. The paper is comprised of two parts for the convenience of discussion. In the first part, from the first chapter to the fifth chapter, trying to perform the relevant research and application at the viewpoint of soil mass engineering geomechanics, the author mainly discusses the study of reinforcing soft ground soil through dynamical consolidation and its application. Then, in the second part, from the sixth chapter to the eleventh chapter, the study of new technologies in the rock slope reinforcement and their application are discussed. The author finds that not only better reinforcing effect can be gained in the research where the principle and method of rock mass engineering geomechanics is adopted, but also new reinforcing technologies can be put forward. Zhengzhou Airport is an important one in central plains. It lies on Yellow River alluvial deposit and the structure of stratum is complex and heterogeneous. The area of airport is very large, which can result in differential settlement easily, damage of airport and aircraft accident, whereas, there are no similar experiences to dispose the foundation, so the foundation treatment become a principal problem. During the process of treatment, the method of dynamic compaction was adopted after compared with other methods using the theory of synthetic integration. Dynamic compaction is an important method to consolidate foundation, which was successfully used in the foundation of Zhengzhou Airport. For fill foundation, controlling the thickness of fill so as to make the foundation treatment can reach the design demand and optimum thickness of the fill is a difficult problem. Considering this problem, the author proposed a calculation method to evaluate the thickness of fill. The method can consider not only the self-settlement of fill but also the settlement of the ground surface under applied load so as to ensure the settlement occurred during the using period can satisfy the design demand. It is proved that the method is correct after using it to choose reasonable energy of dynamic compaction to treat foundation. At the same time, in order to examine the effect of dynamic compaction, many monitor methods were adopted in the test such as static loading test, modulus of resilience test, deep pore pressure -test, static cone penetration test and the variation of the pore volume measurement. Through the tests, the author summarized the discipline of the accumulation and dissipation of pore pressure in Yellow River alluvial deposit under the action of dynamic compaction, gave a correct division of the property change of silt and clay under dynamic compaction, determined the bearing capacity of foundation after treatment and weighted the reinforcing effect of dynamic consolidation from the variation of the soil particle in microcosmic and the parameter of soil mass' density. It can be considered that the compactness of soil is in proportion to the energy of dynamic compaction. This conclusion provided a reference to the research of the "Problem of Soil Structure-the Central Problem of Soil Mechanics in 21 Century ". It is also important to strengthen rock mass for water conservancy and electric power engineering. Slip-resistance pile and anchoring adit full of reinforced concrete are usually adopted in engineering experience to strengthen rock mass and very important for engineering. But there also some deficiency such as the weakest section can't be highlighted, the monitor is inconvenient and the diameter of pile and adit is very large etc. The author and his supervisor professor Yangzhifa invented prestressed slip-resistance pile and prestressed anchoring adit full of reinforced concrete, utilizing the advantage that the prestressed structure has better anti-tensile characteristic (this invention is to be published). These inventions overcome the disadvantages of general slip-resistance pile and anchoring adit full of reinforced concrete and have the functions of engineering prospecting, strengthening, drainage and monitor simultaneous, so they have better strengthened effect and be more convenient for monitor and more economical than traditional methods. Drainage is an important factor in treatments of rock mass and slop. In view of the traditional drainage method that drainage pore often be clogged so as to resulted in incident, professor Yangzhifa invented the method and setting of guide penetration by fiber bundle. It would take good effect to use it in prestressed slip-resistance pile and anchoring adit full of reinforced concrete. In this paper, the author took example for anchoring adit full of reinforced concrete used to strengthen Wuqiangxi left bank to simulate the strengthened effect after consolidated by prestressed slip-resistance pile, took example for 102 landslide occurred along Sichuan-Tibet highway to simulate the application of slip-resistance pile and the new technology of drainage. At the same time the author proposed the treatment method of flowing sand in Sichuan-Tibet highway, which will benefit the study on strengthening similar engineering. There are five novelties in the paper with the author's theoretical study and engineering practice: 1. Summarizing the role of pore water pressure accumulation and dissipation of the Yellow River alluvial and diluvial soil under the action of dynamical consolidation, which has instructive significance in the engineering construction under the analogical engineering geological conditions in the future. It has not been researched by the predecessors. 2. Putting forward the concept of density D in microcosmic based on the microcosmical structure study of the soil sample. Adopting D to weight the reinforcing effect of dynamic consolidation is considered to be appropriate by the means of comparing the D values of Zhengzhou Airport's ground soil before with after dynamically consolidating reinforcement, so a more convenient balancing method can be provided for engineering practice. 3. According to the deep research into the soil mass engineering geology, engineering rock and soil science, soil mechanics, as well as considerable field experiments, improving the consolidating method in airport construction, from the conventional method, which is dynamically compactmg original ground surface firstly, then filling soil and dynamically layer-consolidating or layer-compacting at last to the upgraded method, which is performing dynamical consolidation after filling soil to place totally at the extent of the certain earth-filling depth. The result of the dynamical consolidation not only complies with the specifications, but also reduces the soil treatment investment by 10 million RMB. 4. Proposing the method for calculating the height of the filled soil by the means of estimating the potential displacement produced in the original ground surface and the filled earth soil under the possible load, selecting the appropriate dynamically-compacting power and determining the virtual height of the filled earth soil. The method is proved to be effective and scientific. 5. According to the thought of Engineering Geomechanics Metal-Synthetic Methodology (EGMS), patenting two inventions (to the stage of roclamation, with Professor Yang Zhi-fa, the cooperative tutor, and etc.) in which multi-functions, engineering geological investigation, reinforcement, drainage and strength remedy, are integrated all over in one body at the viewpoint of the breakage mechanism of the rock slope.

Our long-term goal is the detection and characterization of vulnerable plaque in the coronary arteries of the heart using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) catheters. Vulnerable plaque, characterized by a thin fibrous cap and a soft, lipid-rich necrotic core is a precursor to heart attack and stroke. Early detection of such plaques may potentially alter the course of treatment of the patient to prevent ischemic events. We have previously described the characterization of carotid plaques using external linear arrays operating at 9 MHz. In addition, we previously modified circular array IVUS catheters by short-circuiting several neighboring elements to produce fixed beamwidths for intravascular hyperthermia applications. In this paper, we modified Volcano Visions 8.2 French, 9 MHz catheters and Volcano Platinum 3.5 French, 20 MHz catheters by short-circuiting portions of the array for acoustic radiation force impulse imaging (ARFI) applications. The catheters had an effective transmit aperture size of 2 mm and 1.5 mm, respectively. The catheters were connected to a Verasonics scanner and driven with pushing pulses of 180 V p-p to acquire ARFI data from a soft gel phantom with a Young's modulus of 2.9 kPa. The dynamic response of the tissue-mimicking material demonstrates a typical ARFI motion of 1 to 2 microns as the gel phantom displaces away and recovers back to its normal position. The hardware modifications applied to our IVUS catheters mimic potential beamforming modifications that could be implemented on IVUS scanners. Our results demonstrate that the generation of radiation force from IVUS catheters and the development of intravascular ARFI may be feasible.

In recent years international policies have aimed to stimulate the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the field of health care. Belgium has also been affected by these developments and, for example, health electronic regional networks ("HNs") are established. Thanks to a qualitative case study we have explored the implementation of such innovations (HN) to better understand how health professionals collaborate through the HN and how the HN affect their relationships. Within the HNs studied a common good unites the actors: the continuity of care for a better quality of care. However behind this objective of continuity of care other individual motivations emerge. Some controversies need also to be resolved in order to achieve cooperative relationships. HNs have notably to take national developments into account. These developments raise the question of the control of medical knowledge and medical practice. Professional issues, and not only practical changes, are involved in these innovations. © 2008 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Composites of recycled carbon fiber (CF) with up to 30 wt % loading with polyethylene (PE) were prepared via melt compounding. The morphology of the composites and the degree of dispersion of the CF in the PE matrix was examined using scanning electron microscopy, and revealed the CF to be highly dispersed at all loadings and strong interfacial adhesion to exist between the CF and PE. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface chemistry and potential bonding sites of recycled CF. Both the Young's modulus and ultimate tensile stress increased with increasing CF loading, but the percentage stress at break was unchanged up to 5 wt % loading, then decreased with further successive addition of CF. The effect of CF on the elastic modulus of PE was examined using the Halpin-Tsai and modified Cox models, the former giving a better fit with the values determined experimentally. The electrical conductivity of the PE matrix was enhanced by about 11 orders of magnitude on addition of recycled CF with a percolation threshold of 7 and 15 wt % for 500-mu m and 3-mm thick samples. Pretensioned concrete members are designed and manufactured by using at least two materials: concrete and prestressing reinforcement. Also, two main stages must be considered: prestress transfer and member loading. Hence, the behavior of these members depends strongly on the reinforcement-to-concrete bond performance and prestress losses. In this paper, a testing technique to measure the specific parameters related with the involved phenomena is presented. The testing technique is based on the analysis of series of specimens varying in embedment length to simulate several cross sections at only one end of a pretensioned concrete member. Each specimen is characterized by means of the sequential release of the prestress transfer (detensioning) and the pull-out (loading) operation. The test provides data on prestressing force, transmission length (initial and long-term), anchorage length (without and with slip), reinforcement slips, bond stresses, longitudinal concrete strains, concrete modulus of elasticity, and prestress losses (instantaneous and time-dependent).

In order to increase the utilisation of Irish timber in construction and novel engineered wood products, the mechanical and physical properties of the material must be established. For timber products used for structural applications, the fundamental properties are the modulus of elasticity, bending strength, density and dimensional stability, as these define the structural grade of the material. In order to develop engineering design models for applications such as reinforced timber, knowledge of the nonlinear stress-strain behaviour in compression is also required.
The paper presents the programme and results of an ongoing research project ‘Innovation in Irish Timber Usage’ which focuses on the characterisation of Sitka spruce as it is the most widely grown species in Ireland. In the past, a number of studies have been conducted to determine the properties of Irish-grown Sitka spruce. Nevertheless, due to the changes that have taken place in silvicultural practices since the publication of these studies, there is a need to determine how these properties have changed. This paper presents the data gathered from historical studies together with the results of an extensive test programme undertaken to characterise the properties of the present resource.
Moreover, the study preliminary examines the potential use of Irish grown Sitka spruce in novel timber products. Construction applications, such as fibre-reinforced polymer reinforced timber elements and connections, and cross-laminated timber are investigated.

This review article considers Samuel Moyn’s book The Last Utopia:Human Rights in History in the context of recent trends in the writing of human rights history. A central debate among historians of human rights, in seekingto account for the genesis and spread of human rights, is how far current humanrights practice demonstrates continuity or radical discontinuity with previousattempts to secure rights. Moyn’s discontinuity thesis and the controversysurrounding it exemplify this debate. Whether Moyn is correct is importantbeyond the confines of human rights historiography, with implications for theirmeaning in law, as well as their political legitimacy. This review argues that Moyn’s book ultimately fails to convince, for two broad reasons. First, a more balanced judgment would conclude that the history of human rights is both one of continuity and discontinuity. Second, and more importantly, Moyn fails to offer a convincing account of the normativity of human rights. Undertaking a history of human rights requires a deeper engagement with debates on the nature and validity of human rights than Moyn seems prepared to contemplate.

The main purpose of this thesis was to produce new formulations of PMMA-co- EHA and study its feasibility as being an alternative to traditional PMMA bone cements. Thus, were originally produced several co-polymers of PMMA-co-EHA and its mechanical properties and in vitro behaviour were evaluated. The copolymers were obtained by radical polymerization and several formulations were produced by partial replacement of MMA (up to about 50%) for EHA. Overall, the results suggest that the partial replacement of MMA by EHA decreased the modulus of the materials and, consequently, increased its flexibility. Then, PMMA commercial beads were added to PMMA-co-EHA formulations (to get bone cement) and the general properties of the resulting bone cements were evaluated. In general, the results revealed that the partial replacement of MMA by EHA led to beneficial changes in curing parameters (there was a reduction of the peak temperature and an increase of curing/setting time), in the in vitro behaviour (the water capacity increased) and in the mechanical properties (the bending strength increased) of new cements. The in vitro cellular response of new formulations of PMMA-co-EHA was compared with that of traditional PMMA bone cement. To this end, we tested the cell adhesion and proliferation of osteoblast-like MG63 cells and human cells from bone marrow. The results revealed that both types of cells were able to attach and proliferate in both formulations. The only exception was observed for the formulation prepared with the highest percentage of EHA, where a few cells that adhere failed to proliferate. Moreover, it was found that increasing the amount of EHA in cement led to an increasing inhibition of cell growth, especially during the first week of culture. This was related to increased water uptake capacity by the new formulations and consequent release of some of its toxic components. Finally, PMMA commercial beads were partially replaced by HA particles and the influence of this substitution on the curing parameters, the mechanical properties and in vitro behaviour of the resulting composites was also evaluated. Incorporation of HA into the bone cements induced a number of significant changes in its final properties: 1) decrease the peak temperature; 2) increase of curing time, 3) increasing the value of elastic modulus accompanied by decrease of the strength/tension. This last finding was related to poor interfacial adhesion between the various components of the bone cements and a heterogeneous distribution (possible agglomeration) of HA particles.
