Background The population exposed to potentially hazardous substances through inappropriate and unsafe management practices related to disposal and recycling of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment, collectively known as e-waste, is increasing. We aimed to summarise the evidence for the association between such exposures and adverse health outcomes. Methods We systematically searched five electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycNET, and CINAHL) for studies assessing the association between exposure to e-waste and outcomes related to mental health and neurodevelopment, physical health, education, and violence and criminal behaviour, from Jan 1, 1965, to Dec 17, 2012, and yielded 2274 records. Of the 165 full-text articles assessed for eligibility, we excluded a further 142, resulting in the inclusion of 23 published epidemiological studies that met the predetermined criteria. All studies were from southeast China. We assessed evidence of a causal association between exposure to e-waste and health outcomes within the Bradford Hill framework. Findings We recorded plausible outcomes associated with exposure to e-waste including change in thyroid function, changes in cellular expression and function, adverse neonatal outcomes, changes in temperament and behaviour, and decreased lung function. Boys aged 8–9 years living in an e-waste recycling town had a lower forced vital capacity than did those living in a control town. Significant negative correlations between blood chromium concentrations and forced vital capacity in children aged 11 and 13 years were also reported. Findings from most studies showed increases in spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, and premature births, and reduced birthweights and birth lengths associated with exposure to e-waste. People living in e-waste recycling towns or working in e-waste recycling had evidence of greater DNA damage than did those living in control towns. Studies of the effects of exposure to e-waste on thyroid function were not consistent. One study related exposure to e-waste and waste electrical and electronic equipment to educational outcomes. Interpretation Although data suggest that exposure to e-waste is harmful to health, more well designed epidemiological investigations in vulnerable populations, especially pregnant women and children, are needed to confirm these associations. Particulates with specific sizes and characteristics can induce potent immune responses by promoting antigen uptake of appropriate immuno-stimulatory cell types. Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles have shown many potential bioapplications due to their biocompatibility and special characteristics. Here, superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (SPIONs) with high magnetization value (70emug-1) were stabilized with trisodium citrate and successfully conjugated with a model antigen (ovalbumin, OVA) via N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) mediated reaction, to achieve a maximum conjugation capacity at approximately 13μgμm-2. It was shown that different mechanisms governed the interactions between the OVA molecules and magnetite nanoparticles at different pH conditions. We evaluated as-synthesized SPION against commercially available magnetite nanoparticles. The cytotoxicity of these nanoparticles was investigated using mammalian cells. The reported CDI-mediated reaction can be considered as a potential approach in conjugating biomolecules onto magnetite or other biodegradable nanoparticles for vaccine delivery.

BACKGROUND The increasing cost of fossil fuels as well as the escalating social and industrial awareness of the environmental impacts associated with the use of fossil fuels has created the need for more sustainable fuel options. Bioethanol, produced from renewable biomass such as sugar and starch materials, is believed to be one of these options, and it is currently being harnessed extensively. However, the utilization of sugar and starch materials as feedstocks for bioethanol production creates a major competition with the food market in terms of land for cultivation, and this makes bioethanol from these sources economically less attractive. RESULT This study explores the suitability of microalgae (Chlorococum sp.) as a substrate for bioethanol production via yeast (Saccharomycesbayanus)under different fermentation conditions. Results show a maximum ethanol concentration of 3.83 g L -1 obtained from 10 g L-1 of lipid-extracted microalgae debris. CONCLUSION This productivity level (∼38% w/w), which is in keeping with that of current production systems endorses microalgae as a promising substrate for bioethanol production.

Polymethacrylate monoliths, specifically poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) or poly(GMA-co-EDMA) monoliths, are a new generation of chromatographic supports and are significantly different from conventional particle-based adsorbents, membranes, and other monolithic supports for biomolecule purification. Similar to other monoliths, polymethacrylate monoliths possess large pores which allow convective flow of mobile phase and result in high flow rates at reduced pressure drop, unlike particulate supports. The simplicity of the adsorbent synthesis, pH resistance, and the ease and flexibility of tailoring their pore size to that of the target biomolecule are the key properties which differentiate polymethacrylate monoliths from other monoliths. Polymethacrylate monoliths are endowed with reactive epoxy groups for easy functionalization (with anion-exchange, hydrophobic, and affinity ligands) and high ligand retention. In this review, the structure and performance of polymethacrylate monoliths for chromatographic purification of biomolecules are evaluated and compared to those of other supports. The development and use of polymethacrylate monoliths for research applications have grown rapidly in recent times and have enabled the achievement of high through-put biomolecule purification on semi-preparative and preparative scales.

The creation of a commercially viable and a large-scale purification process for plasmid DNA (pDNA) production requires a whole-systems continuous or semi-continuous purification strategy employing optimised stationary adsorption phase(s) without the use of expensive and toxic chemicals, avian/bovine-derived enzymes and several built-in unit processes, thus affecting overall plasmid recovery, processing time and economics. Continuous stationary phases are known to offer fast separation due to their large pore diameter making large molecule pDNA easily accessible with limited mass transfer resistance even at high flow rates. A monolithic stationary sorbent was synthesised via free radical liquid porogenic polymerisation of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) with surface and pore characteristics tailored specifically for plasmid binding, retention and elution. The polymer was functionalised with an amine active group for anion-exchange purification of pDNA from cleared lysate obtained from E. coli DH5α-pUC19 pellets in RNase/protease-free process. Characterization of the resin showed a unique porous material with 70% of the pores sizes above 300 nm. The final product isolated from anion-exchange purification in only 5 min was pure and homogenous supercoiled pDNA with no gDNA, RNA and protein contamination as confirmed with DNA electrophoresis, restriction analysis and SDS page. The resin showed a maximum binding capacity of 15.2 mg/mL and this capacity persisted after several applications of the resin. This technique is cGMP compatible and commercially viable for rapid isolation of pDNA.

A monolithic stationary phase was prepared via free radical co-polymerization of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) with pore diameter tailored specifically for plasmid binding, retention and elution. The polymer was functionalized. with 2-chloro-N,N-diethylethylamine hydrochloride (DEAE-Cl) for anion-exchange purification of plasmid DNA (pDNA) from clarified lysate obtained from E. coli DH5α-pUC19 culture in a ribonuclease/ protease-free environment. Characterization of the monolithic resin showed a porous material, with 68% of the pores existing in the matrix having diameters above 300 nm. The final product isolated from a single-stage 5 min anion-exchange purification was a pure and homogeneous supercoiled (SC) pDNA with no gDNA, RNA and protein contamination as confirmed by ethidium bromide agarose gel electrophoresis (EtBr-AGE), enzyme restriction analysis and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This non-toxic technique is cGMP compatible and highly scalable for production of pDNA on a commercial level.

In this thesis a new approach for solving a certain class of anomalous diffusion equations was developed. The theory and algorithms arising from this work will pave the way for more efficient and more accurate solutions of these equations, with applications to science, health and industry. The method of finite volumes was applied to discretise the spatial derivatives, and this was shown to outperform existing methods in several key respects. The stability and convergence of the new method were rigorously established.

The novel pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine compound GU285 (4-amino-6-alpha-carbamoylethylthio-1- phenylpyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine, CAS 134896-40-5) was examined for its ability (1) to inhibit binding of adenosine (ADO) receptor ligands in rat brain membranes, (2) to antagonise functional responses to ADO agonists in rat right and left atria and coronary resistance vessels, and (3) to reduce the fall in heart rate and arterial blood pressure produced by the ADO A1 agonist N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA) in the intact, anaesthetized rat. GU285 competitively inhibited binding of the ADO A1 agonist [3H]-R-N6-phenylisopropyladenosine (R-PIA) yielding a Ki value of 11 (7-18) nmol.l-1 (geometric mean +/- 95% Cl). When assayed against the ADO A2A selective agonist [3H]-2-[p-(2-carboxyethyl)- phenethylamino]-5'-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine, (CGS21680), a Ki of 15 (10-24) nmol.l-1 was obtained. In spontaneously beating right atria, GU285 competitively antagonized negative chronotropic effects of R-PIA with a pA2 of 8.7 +/- 0.3 and in electrically paced left atria, GU285 competitively antagonized negative inotropic effects of R-PIA with a pA2 of 9.0 +/- 0.1. In the potassium-arrested, perfused rat heart GU285 (1 mumol.l-1) antagonized only the high sensitivity, ADO A2B mediated component of the biphasic relaxation of the coronary vasculature produced by NECA. The low sensitivity component was unchanged. GU285 (1 mumol.kg-1) antagonized the negative chronotropic and hypotensive effects of the adenosine A1 agonist CPA in anaesthetized rats, producing a 10-fold rightward shift in the dose-response relationship. These data demonstrate that in the rat, GU285 is a potent, non-selective adenosine receptor antagonist that maintains its activity in vivo.

Our world is literally and figuratively turning to ‘dust’. This work acknowledges decay and renewal and the transitional, cyclical natures of interrelated ecologies. It also suggests advanced levels of degradation potentially beyond reparation. Dust exists both on and beneath the border of our unaided vision. Dust particles are predominantly forms of disintegrating solids that often become the substance or catalyst of future forms. Like many tiny forms, dust is an often unnoticed residue with ‘planet-size consequences’. (Hanna Holmes 2001) The image depicts an ethereal, backlit body, continually circling and morphing, apparently floating, suggesting endless cycles of birth, life and death and inviting differing states of meditation, exploration, stillness and play. This never ending video work is taken from a large-scale interactive/media artwork created during a six-month research residency in England at the Institute of Contemporary Art London and at Vincent Dance Theatre Sheffield in 2006. It was originally presented on a raised floor screen made of pure white sand at the ICA in London (see). The project involved developing new interaction, engagement and image making strategies for media arts practice, drawing on the application of both kinetic and proprioceptive dance/performance knowledges. The work was further informed by ecological network theory that assesses the systemic implications of private and public actions within bounded systems. The creative methodology was primarily practice-led which fomented the particular qualities of imagery, generated through cross-fertilising embodied knowledge of Dance and Media Arts. This was achieved through extensive workshopping undertaken in theatres, working ‘on the floor’ live, with dancers, props, sound and projection. And eventually of course, all this dust must settle. Introduction Chest pain is common in emergency department (ED) patients and represents a considerable burden for rural health services. Health services reforms to improve access to care need appropriately skilled and supported clinicians in the delivery of safe and effective care, including the use of emergency nurse practitioners (ENPs). Despite increasing use of ENPs, little is known about the safety and quality of the service in the rural ED context. The aims of this study are (1) to examine the safety and quality of the ENP service model in the provision of care in the rural environment and (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of the service in the management of patients presenting with undifferentiated chest pain. Methods and analysis This is the protocol for a prospective longitudinal nested cohort study to compare the effectiveness of ENP service with that of standard care. Adults presenting to three rural EDs in Queensland, Australia with a primary presenting complaint of atraumatic chest pain will be eligible for enrolment. We will measure (1) clinician's use of evidence-based guidelines (2) diagnostic accuracy of ECG interpretation for the management of patients with suspected or confirmed ACS (3) service indicators of waiting times, length-of-stay and did-not-wait rates and (4) clinician's diagnostic accuracy as measured by rates of unplanned representation within 7 days (5) satisfaction with care, (6) quality-of-life and (7) functional status. To assess these outcomes we will use a combination of measures collected from routinely collected data, medical record review and questionnaires (with 30-day follow-up). Ethics and dissemination Queensland Health Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) has approved this protocol. The results will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at one or more scientific conferences.

This article aims to fill in the gap of the second-order accurate schemes for the time-fractional subdiffusion equation with unconditional stability. Two fully discrete schemes are first proposed for the time-fractional subdiffusion equation with space discretized by finite element and time discretized by the fractional linear multistep methods. These two methods are unconditionally stable with maximum global convergence order of $O(\tau+h^{r+1})$ in the $L^2$ norm, where $\tau$ and $h$ are the step sizes in time and space, respectively, and $r$ is the degree of the piecewise polynomial space. The average convergence rates for the two methods in time are also investigated, which shows that the average convergence rates of the two methods are $O(\tau^{1.5}+h^{r+1})$. Furthermore, two improved algorithms are constrcted, they are also unconditionally stable and convergent of order $O(\tau^2+h^{r+1})$. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical analysis. The comparisons between the present algorithms and the existing ones are included, which show that our numerical algorithms exhibit better performances than the known ones.

The maximum principle for the space and time–space fractional partial differential equations is still an open problem. In this paper, we consider a multi-term time–space Riesz–Caputo fractional differential equations over an open bounded domain. A maximum principle for the equation is proved. The uniqueness and continuous dependence of the solution are derived. Using a fractional predictor–corrector method combining the L1 and L2 discrete schemes, we present a numerical method for the specified equation. Two examples are given to illustrate the obtained results.

Subdiffusion equations with distributed-order fractional derivatives describe some important physical phenomena. In this paper, we consider the time distributed-order and Riesz space fractional diffusions on bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here, the time derivative is defined as the distributed-order fractional derivative in the Caputo sense, and the space derivative is defined as the Riesz fractional derivative. First, we discretize the integral term in the time distributed-order and Riesz space fractional diffusions using numerical approximation. Then the given equation can be written as a multi-term time–space fractional diffusion. Secondly, we propose an implicit difference method for the multi-term time–space fractional diffusion. Thirdly, using mathematical induction, we prove the implicit difference method is unconditionally stable and convergent. Also, the solvability for our method is discussed. Finally, two numerical examples are given to show that the numerical results are in good agreement with our theoretical analysis.

Nonlinear time-fractional diffusion equations have been used to describe the liquid infiltration for both subdiffusion and superdiffusion in porous media. In this paper, some problems of anomalous infiltration with a variable-order timefractional derivative in porous media are considered. The time-fractional Boussinesq equation is also considered. Two computationally efficient implicit numerical schemes for the diffusion and wave-diffusion equations are proposed. Numerical examples are provided to show that the numerical methods are computationally efficient.
