Introduction: Fan violence is a frequent occurrence in Swiss football (Bundesamt für Polizei, 2015) leading to high costs for prevention and control (Mensch & Maurer, 2014). Various theories put forward an explanation of fan violence, such as the Elaborated Social Identity Model (Drury & Reicher, 2000) and the Aggravation Mitigation Model (Hylander & Guvå, 2010). Important observations from these theories are the multi-dimensional understanding of fan violence and the dynamics occurring in the fan group. Nevertheless, none of them deal with critical incidents (CIs) which involve a tense atmosphere combined with a higher risk of fan violence. Schumacher Dimech, Brechbühl and Seiler (2015) tackled this gap in research and explored CIs where 43 defining criteria were identified and compiled in an integrated model of CIs. The defining criteria were categorised in four higher-order themes “antecedents” (e.g. a documented history of fan rivalry), “triggers” (e.g. the arrest of a fan), “reactions” (e.g. fans masking themselves) and “consequences” (e.g. fans avoiding communication with fan social workers). Methods: An inventory based on this model is being developed including these 43 criteria. In an exploratory phase, this inventory was presented as an online questionnaire and was completed by 143 individuals. Three main questions are examined: Firstly, the individual items are tested using descriptive analyses. An item analysis is conducted to test reliability, item difficulty and discriminatory power. Secondly, the model’s four higher-order themes are tested using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Thirdly, differences between sub-groups are explored, such as gender and agerelated differences. Results: Respondents rated the items’ importance as high and the quota of incomplete responses was not systematic. Two items were removed from the inventory because of low mean or a high rate of “don’t know”-responses. EFA produced a six-factor solution grouping items into match-related factors, repressive measures, fans’ delinquent behaviour, intra-group behaviour, communication and control and inter-group factors. The item “fans consume alcohol” could not be ordered into any category but was retained since literature accentuates this factor’s influence on fan violence. Analyses examining possible differences between groups are underway. Discussion: Results exploring the adequacy of this inventory assessing defining criteria of CIs in football are promising and thus further evaluative investigation is recommended. This inventory can be used in two ways: as a standardised instrument of assessment for experts evaluating specific CIs and as an instrument for exploring differences in perception and assessment of a CI e.g. gender and age differences, differences between interest groups and stakeholders. High-energy e(-) and pi(-) were measured by the multichannel plate (MCP) detector at the PiM1 beam line of the High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facilities located at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland. The measurements provide the absolute detection efficiencies for these particles: 5.8% +/- 0.5% for electrons in the beam momenta range 17.5-300 MeV/c and 6.0% +/- 1.3% for pions in the beam momenta range 172-345 MeV/c. The pulse height distribution determined from the measurements is close to an exponential function with negative exponent, indicating that the particles penetrated the MCP material before producing the signal somewhere inside the channel. Low charge extraction and nominal gains of the MCP detector observed in this study are consistent with the proposed mechanism of the signal formation by penetrating radiation. A very similar MCP ion detector will be used in the Neutral Ion Mass (NIM) spectrometer designed for the JUICE mission of European Space Agency (ESA) to the Jupiter system, to perform measurements of the chemical composition of the Galilean moon exospheres. The detection efficiency for penetrating radiation determined in the present studies is important for the optimisation of the radiation shielding of the NIM detector against the high-rate and high-energy electrons trapped in Jupiter's magnetic field. Furthermore, the current studies indicate that MCP detectors can be useful to measure high-energy particle beams at high temporal resolution. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Forty-nine percent of pregnancies in the United States are unintended and significant numbers of pregnancies are unintended for women of all ages. One possible reason for the high rate is that while 85% of women at risk for an unintended pregnancy use contraception, negative attitudes about the method used make them poor contraceptors. Negative attitudes may prevent the remaining 15% of women from using any method of birth control. This study examined adult women's attitudes toward contraception and its use to see if attitudes correlate with unintended pregnancy. ^ To obtain a sample of women experiencing unintended pregnancies, women obtaining therapeutic abortions were surveyed since almost all women obtaining therapeutic abortions are experiencing an unintended pregnancy. The study used a cross-sectional survey design and included 312 women obtaining abortions at the Planned Parenthood Surgical Services Clinic in Houston in the latter half of 1999. ^ The responses revealed a lack of knowledge about the safety and effectiveness of contraception, particularly for methods other than oral contraceptives and condoms. Thirty-four percent of the participants were uncomfortable buying contraception. While 71% of the participants said their physician recommended their use of contraception, 17% were unsure and 35% did not talk to their physician about contraception on a regular basis. ^ The attitudes of women using contraception were compared with those not using contraception and many differences were seen. Women not using contraception responded with more ‘unsure’ answers and believed contraception was more difficult to use. They felt planning ahead for the use of contraception interfered with the enjoyment of sex (p-value = 0.06). They were less likely to use contraception if their partner disapproved (p-value = 0.01) and more of them believed their church disapproved of contraception (p-value = 0.02). In comparison, women using contraception had negative attitudes about the safety of the pill (p-values = 0.01–0.08) and the effectiveness of the condom (p-value = 0.04). Therefore, the negative attitudes women using contraception had about contraception may interfere with their effective use of birth control. Those not using contraception were found to hold attitudes that may contribute to their non-use of contraception. ^

Background. The purpose of this study was to describe the risk factors and demographics of persons with salmonellosis and shigellosis and to investigate both seasonal and spatial variations in the occurrence of these infections in Texas from 2000 to 2004, utilizing time series analyses and the geographic information system digital mapping methods. ^ Methods. Spatial Analysis: MapInfo software was used to map the distribution of age-adjusted rates of reported shigellosis and salmonellosis in Texas from 2000–2004 by zip codes. Census data on above or below poverty level, household income, highest level of educational attainment, race, ethnicity, and urban/rural community status was obtained from the 2000 Decennial Census for each zip code. The zip codes with the upper 10% and lower 10% were compared using t-tests and logistic regression to determine whether there were any potential risk factors. ^ Temporal analysis. Seasonal patterns in the prevalence of infections in Texas from 2000 to 2003 were determined by performing time-series analysis on the numbers of cases of salmonellosis and shigellosis. A linear regression was also performed to assess for trends in the incidence of each disease, along with auto-correlation and multi-component cosinor analysis. ^ Results. Spatial analysis: Analysis by general linear model showed a significant association between infection rates and age, with young children aged less than 5 and those aged 5–9 years having increased risk of infection for both disease conditions. The data demonstrated that those populations with high percentages of people who attained a higher than high school education were less likely to be represented in zip codes with high rates of shigellosis. However, for salmonellosis, logistic regression models indicated that when compared to populations with high percentages of non-high school graduates, having a high school diploma or equivalent increased the odds of having a high rate of infection. ^ Temporal analysis. For shigellosis, multi-component cosinor analyses were used to determine the approximated cosine curve which represented a statistically significant representation of the time series data for all age groups by sex. The shigellosis results show 2 peaks, with a major peak occurring in June and a secondary peak appearing around October. Salmonellosis results showed a single peak and trough in all age groups with the peak occurring in August and the trough occurring in February. ^ Conclusion. The results from this study can be used by public health agencies to determine the timing of public health awareness programs and interventions in order to prevent salmonellosis and shigellosis from occurring. Because young children depend on adults for their meals, it is important to increase the awareness of day-care workers and new parents about modes of transmission and hygienic methods of food preparation and storage. ^

Background. There is currently a push to increase the number of minorities in cancer clinical trials in an effort to reduce cancer health disparities. Overcoming barriers to clinical trial research for minorities is necessary if we are to achieve the goals of Healthy People 2010. To understand the unexpectedly high rate of attrition in the A NULIFE study, the research team examined the perceived barriers to participation among minority women. The purpose of this study was to determine if either personal or study-related factors influenced healthy pre-menopausal women aged 25-45 years to terminate their participation in the A NULIFE Study. We hypothesized that personal factors were the driving forces for attrition rates in the prevention trial.^ Methods. The target population consisted of eligible women who consented to the A NULIFE study but withdrew prior to being randomized (N= 46), as well as eligible women who completed the informed consent process for the A NULIFE study and withdrew after randomization (N= 42). Examination of attrition rates in this study occurred at a time point when 10 out of 12 participant groups had completed the A NULIFE study. Data involving the 2 groups that were actively engaged in study activities were not used in this analysis. A survey instrument was designed to query the personal and study-related factors that were believed to have contributed to the decision to terminate participation in the A NULIFE study.^ Results. Overall, the highest ranked personal reason that influenced withdrawal from the study was being “too busy” with other obligations. The second highest ranked factor for withdrawal was work obligations. Whereas, more than half of all participants agreed that they were well-informed about the study and considered the study personnel to be approachable, 54% of participants would have been inclined to remain in the study if it were located at a local community center.^ Conclusions. Time commitment was likely a major factor for withdrawal from the A NULIFE study. Future investigators should implement trials within participant communities where possible. Also, focus group settings may provide detailed insight into factors that contribute to the attrition of minorities in cancer clinical trials.^

The purpose of this study is to descriptively analyze the current program at Ben Taub Pediatric Weight Management Program in Houston, Texas, a program designed to help overweight children ages three to eighteen to lose weight. In Texas, approximately one in every three children is overweight or obese. Obesity is seen at an even greater level within Ben Taub due to the hospital's high rate of service for underserved minority populations (Dehghan et al, 2005; Tyler and Horner, 2008; Hunt, 2009). The weight management program consists of nutritional, behavioral, physical activity, and medical counseling. Analysis will focus on changes in weight, BMI, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure from 2007–2010 for all participants who attended at least two weight management sessions. Recommendations will be given in response to the results of the data analysis.^

Follicular lymphoma is the most common lymphoid malignancy in humans. The bcl-2 transgenic mice, which mimic the human follicular lymphoma, initially exhibit a polyclonal hyperplasia due to the overriding of apoptosis by deregulated bcl-2. After a latency period of 15 month 20% of the animals developed clonal lymphomas. Approximately, 50% of these high grade lymphomas presented chromosomal translocations involving c-myc, suggesting that deregulation of this gene is important in the complementation with bcl-2. E$\mu$-myc x bcl-2 double transgenic mice were generated to assess the ability of this two genes to complement in an in vivo system. The double transgenic mice presented a shortened latency (3-4 weeks) and higher incidence of tumor development. Quantification of the extent of programmed cell death indicated that bcl-2 can abrogate the high rate of apoptotic cell death that results from myc deregulation. Bcl-2-Ig, E$\mu$-myc, and bcl-2/E$\mu$-myc lymphomas were examined using PCR-SSCP to detect the presence of p53 mutations in exons 5-9. A high incidence of p53 mutations in E$\mu$-myc lymphomas suggested that inactivating lesions of p53 may represent an important step in the genetic complementation of c-myc in lymphomagenesis. Surprisingly, p53 mutations were quite uncommon in bcl-2 lymphomas suggesting that inactivating mutations of p53 and overexpression of bcl-2 may not cooperate in lymphoma progression. To assess this question, we generated mice that contained a deregulated bcl-2 gene and were nullizygous for p53 (p53KO). No reduction in the tumor latency was observed in the p53KO/bcl-2-Ig hybrid mice when compared with p53 KO mice. Using splenic mononuclear cells isolated from p53KO mice and bcl-2 transgenic mice we demonstrated that bcl-2 suppresses p53 mediated apoptosis in response to DNA damage initiated by $\gamma$-radiation even though p53 protein is induced normally in the bcl-2 overexpressing cells. Western analysis of the expression of p53 target proteins after $\gamma$-radiation showed a correlation between the p53-dependent induction of bax protein after radiation and the ability of p53 to mediate apoptosis. ^

Recent investigations of the southern Gulf of California (22°N) on Leg 65 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) allow important comparisons with drilled sections of ocean crust formed at different spreading rates. During Leg 65 the Glomar Challenger drilled seven basement holes at sites forming a transect across the ridge axis near the Tamayo Fracture Zone. An additional site was drilled on the fracture zone itself, where a small magnetic "diapir" was located. Together with the material from Site 474 (drilled during Leg 64) the cores recovered at these sites are representative of the upper basaltic and sedimentary crust formed since the initial opening of the Gulf. The pattern of magmatic accretion at the ridge axis is conditioned by the moderate to high rate of spreading (~6 cm/y.) and comparatively high sedimentation rates that now characterize the Gulf of California. In terms of spreading rate, this region is intermediate between the "superfast" East Pacific Rise axis to the south (up to 17 cm/y.) and the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge (2-4 cm/y.) both of which have been extensively studied by dredging and drilling.

Bulk X-ray mineralogy of 47 hemipelagic mud and clay samples from the Blake Outer Ridge has revealed that the sediments contain low magnesian calcite, calcian dolomite, ferroan dolomite, and magnesian siderite. Dolomite and siderite are authigenic and occur as rhombohedrons scattered through the sediments, whereas calcite is mostly biogenic. Pliocene dolomitic lenses are made up of interlocking polyhedral grains of ferroan dolomite. The contents of authigenic dolomite and siderite are 3 to 8% in carbonate sediments and 70 to 89% in dolomitic lenses. Dolomite occurs largely in the cores above 192 m sub-bottom depth, whereas siderite occurs in the cores below 87 m. The distribution and occurrence of dolomite and siderite have determined the diagenetic zonation of carbonates as Zone I (dolomitic zone, top-90 m), Zone II (transition zone, 90-180 m), and Zone III (sideritic zone, 180 m-bottom). Measurements of major and minor elements in the untreated total sediment samples and the insoluble residues after digestion in acid-reducing solution have revealed that the soluble fraction concentrates carbonates and ferromanganese associations (Ca, Mg, Sr, Fe, and Mn). Typical "hydrogenous elements" (Co, Cu, Ni, and V) are more concentrated in the insoluble residues rather than in the soluble fraction; the concentrations of these four elements are low and comparable to modern offshore mud, probably because the Site 533 sediments were deposited at a high rate of sedimentation. The contents of Fe2O3 and MnO are somewhat high for rapidly accumulated mud, particularly in the Pliocene sediments (8.09 and 0.26%, respectively, on a Carbonate-free basis). The high Fe and Mn contents are mainly due to the high contribution of the leacheable nonlithogenous fraction; leacheable Fe and Mn originate in the ferromanganese oxide accumulated on the seafloor. Only a small amount of ferric oxide was converted to iron sulfide in the surficial part of Zone I. Most ferromanganese oxide was reduced and precipitated as ferroan dolomite and magnesian siderite in Zones II and III under high alkalinity and high pH conditions in the organic-matter-rich sediments. Fe2+ and Mn2+ in the deeper sediments beneath Zone III possibly migrated upward and concentrated as siderite in Zone III, hence resulting in high contents of Fe and Mn in the Pliocene sediments. Analysis of carbonate zonation on the Blake Outer Ridge has revealed that the zonation is subparallel to the bedding plane rather than to the present seafloor. The sediments at Site 103 on the flank region of the Ridge are lacking Zone I and most of Zone II, probably the result of erosion of the most of the Pleistocene and Pliocene sediments by the enhanced bottom currents during the Pleistocene.

Oceanic sediments deposited at high rate close to continents are dominated by terrigenous material. Aside from dilution by biogenic components, their chemical compositions reflect those of nearby continental masses. This study focuses on oceanic sediments coming from the juvenile Canadian Cordillera and highlights systematic differences between detritus deriving from juvenile crust and detritus from old and mature crust. We report major and trace element concentrations for 68 sediments from the northernmost part of the Cascade forearc, drilled at ODP Sites 888 and 1027. The calculated weighted averages for each site can then be used in the future to quantify the contribution of subducted sediments to Cascades volcanism. The two sites have similar compositions but Site 888, located closer to the continent, has higher sandy turbidite contents and displays higher bulk SiO2/Al2O3 with lower bulk Nb/Zr, attributed to the presence of zircons in the coarse sands. Comparison with published data for other oceanic sedimentary piles demonstrates the existence of systematic differences between modern sediments deriving from juvenile terranes (juvenile sediments) and modern sediments derived from mature continental areas (cratonic sediments). The most striking systematic difference is for Th/Nb, Th/U, Nb/U and Th/Rb ratios: juvenile sediments have much lower ratios than cratonic sediments. The small enrichment of Th over Nb in cratonic sediments may be explained by intracrustal magmatic and metamorphic differentiation processes. In contrast, their elevated Th/U and Nb/U ratios (average values of 6.87 and 7.95, respectively) in comparison to juvenile sediments (Th/U ~ 3.09, Nb/U ~ 5.15) suggest extensive U and Rb losses on old cratons. Uranium and Rb losses are attributed to long-term leaching by rain and river water during exposure of the continental crust at the surface. Over geological times, the weathering effects create a slow but systematic increase of Th/U with exposure time.

Seawater 87Sr/86Sr values increase abruptly by 28 * 10**-6 across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary (KTB). This small, but rapid shift is superimposed on the larger scale structure of the seawater Sr isotope curve. The time scale of radiogenic Sr addition appears to be too rapid to reconcile with sources associated with volcanism, and we show that the amount of Sr required to produce even this small increase is too large to be derived from: (1) a KT bolide of the size constrained by the Ir anomaly, (2) continental crust ejecta from the impact of such a bolide, (3) soot from global wildfires initiated by an impact, or (4) any combination of these sources. The probable source of the radiogenic Sr is enhanced continental weathering, but the high rate of increase appears to rule out processes such as sea level regression, glaciation or tectonism. A plausible mechanism for rapid addition of radiogenic Sr to the oceans is enhanced weathering associated with globally distributed acid rain (pH c. 1) which is a proposed by-product of a bolide impact (Prinn and Fegley, 1987, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(87)90046-X).

The barium distribution in sediments and pore fluids from five sites drilled in the Japan Sea have been used to illustrate the geochemical behavior of this element as it pertains paleoproductivity reconstructions, diagenetic remobilization, and barite precipitation in authigenic fronts. Sites where sulfate is depleted in the pore fluids also show high concentrations of dissolved barium, reflecting dissolution of biogenic barite. The high rate of sedimentation at Sites 798 and 799 results in a rapid sulfate depletion, which in turn leads to barite dissolution and reprecipitation in diagenetic fronts. The dissolved barium distribution at these sites has been used to quantify the rate of barite dissolution; we estimate a first-order rate constant for barite dissolution to be 2*10**-6/s at Site 799 and 2*10**-7/s at Site 798. Authigenic barite has been documented in sediments from Site 799 at 323 meters below seafloor by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray fluorescence analysis. These results indicate barite precipitation in a diagenetic front near the zone of sulfate depletion by upward migration of dissolved barium and downward diffusion of sulfate. Barite precipitation has also been inferred at Sites 796 and 798 based on sedimentary and dissolved barium distributions. Sulfate is not depleted in the pore fluids of Site 794. The lack of diagenetic remobilization of biogenic barium at this site preserves the high barium signal associated with the high-productivity sequences deposited during the late Miocene to Pliocene. Significantly, the organic carbon distribution does not indicate high accumulation rates during the periods of high opal and barium deposition. Instead, higher organic carbon accumulations are recorded in the Quaternary and middle Miocene sequences; intervals that are also characterized by deposition of siliciclastic turbidites. The presence of a terrestrial component in the organic carbon record renders barium a more useful indicator than organic carbon for paleoproductivity reconstructions in this marginal sea.

DSDP Site 516 contains a complete middle Eocene to lower Miocene interval with a well-developed Oligocene sequence that is more than 300 m thick. In this paper, the most important and characteristic benthic foraminiferal species from this interval are described and illustrated, and their quantitative and biostratigraphic distribution is given. Middle Eocene benthic assemblages, derived from pelagic intercalations in a partly turbiditic sequence, are low in diversity. Benthic assemblages of fairly high diversity occur in limestones, chalks, and oozes of the upper Eocene to lower Miocene. The consistently high rate of new species appearances at Site 516 during late Eocene and Oligocene contrasted greatly with the very slow rate of change in abyssal faunas at that time; there were no significant faunal changes at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. The assemblages are dominated by Cibicidoides (mostly C. ungerianus or C. kullenbergi) and Lenticulina. Buliminids were also important during the Eocene and early Oligocene. Faunal comparison with other Atlantic DSDP sites and drill holes in the Gulf of Mexico suggest an approximately mid-bathyal (500-1500 m) depth of deposition during late Eocene and Oligocene.

During the early 2000s the Greenland Ice Sheet experienced the largest ice-mass loss of the instrumental record, largely as a result of the acceleration, thinning and retreat of large outlet glaciers in West and southeast Greenland. The quasi-simultaneous change in the glaciers suggests a common climate forcing. Increasing air and ocean temperatures have been indicated as potential triggers. Here, we present a record of calving activity of Helheim Glacier, East Greenland, that extends back to about AD 1890, based on an analysis of sedimentary deposits from Sermilik Fjord, where Helheim Glacier terminates. Specifically, we use the annual deposition of and grains as a proxy for iceberg discharge. Our record reveals large fluctuations in calving rates, but the present high rate was reproduced only in the 1930s. A comparison with climate indices indicates that high calving activity coincides with a relatively strong influence of Atlantic water and a lower influence of polar water on the shelf off Greenland, as well as with warm summers and the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation. Our analysis provides evidence that Helheim Glacier responds to short-term fluctuations of large-scale oceanic and atmospheric conditions, on timescales of 3-10 years.

A notorious advantage of wireless transmission is a significant reduction and simplification in wiring and harness. There are a lot of applications of wireless systems, but in many occasions sensor nodes require a specific housing to protect the electronics from hush environmental conditions. Nowadays the information is scarce and nonspecific on the dynamic behaviour of WSN and RFID. Therefore the purpose of this study is to evaluate the dynamic behaviour of the sensors. A series of trials were designed and performed covering temperature steps between cold room (5 °C), room temperature (23 °C) and heated environment (35 °C). As sensor nodes: three Crossbow motes, a surface mounted Nlaza module (with sensor Sensirion located on the motherboard), an aerial mounted Nlaza where the Sensirion sensor stayed at the end of a cable), and four tags RFID Turbo Tag (T700 model with and without housing), and 702-B (with and without housing). To assess the dynamic behaviour a first order response approach is used and fitted with dedicated optimization tools programmed in Matlab that allow extracting the time response (?) and corresponding determination coefficient (r2) with regard to experimental data. The shorter response time (20.9 s) is found for the uncoated T 700 tag which encapsulated version provides a significantly higher response (107.2 s). The highest ? corresponds to the Crossbow modules (144.4 s), followed by the surface mounted Nlaza module (288.1 s), while the module with aerial mounted sensor gives a response certainly close above to the T700 without coating (42.8 s). As a conclusion, the dynamic response of temperature sensors within wireless and RFID nodes is dramatically influenced by the way they are housed (to protect them from the environment) as well as by the heat released by the node electronics itself; its characterization is basic to allow monitoring of high rate temperature changes and to certify the cold chain. Besides the time to rise and to recover is significantly different being mostly higher for the latter than for the former.
