One of the most studied ceramic superconductors for application has been, undoubtedly, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. Although being a multiphasic material, it has proved to have great advantages compared to other ceramic systems. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature call distinguish among different atomic jumps that occur inside the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, mechanical loss spectra of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta bar shaped samples, made by a conventional method, have been measured between 80 and 600 K, using a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies below 50 Hz, for samples annealed in vacuum up to 600 K. Possible relaxation mechanisms are proposed to explain the origin of the mechanical-loss peaks observed 300 and 500 K. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objective of this work is to present an index which may synthesize a set of indicators of mobility for medium size cities urban centers. Three great areas were selected to compose the mobility index: pedestrians, motor vehicles and cycling. The Sampling Mobility Index is given by the sum of the punctuation the indicators selected and can to result in 700 points, the best result to mobility, and 0 points, the worse to mobility. The result obtained is given by the Sampling Mobility Index equal to 390. This result indicates a critical situation in Assis, as far as mobility is concerned. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Resin solvation properties affect the efficiency of the coupling reactions in solid-phase peptide synthesis. Here we report a novel approach to evaluate resin solvation properties, making use of spin label electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The aggregating VVLGAAIV and ING sequences were assembled in benzhydrylamine-resin with different amino group contents (up to 2.6 mmol/g) to examine the extent of chain association within the beads. These model peptidyl-resins were first labeled at their N-terminus with the amino acid spin label 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl-4-amino-4-carboxylic acid (Toac). Their solvation properties in different solvents were estimated, either by bead swelling measurement or by assessing the dynamics of their polymeric matrixes through the analysis of Toac EPR spectra, and were correlated with the yield of the acylation reaction. In most cases the coupling rate was found to depend on bead swelling. Comparatively, the EPR approach was more effective. Line shape analysis allowed the detection of more than one peptide chain population, which influenced the reaction. The results demonstrated the unique potential of EPR spectroscopy not only for improving the yield of peptide synthesis, even in challenging conditions, but also for other relevant polymer-supported methodologies in chemistry and biology.

We use singularity theory to classify forced symmetry-breaking bifurcation problemsf(z, lambda, mu) = f(1)(z, lambda) + muf(2)(z, lambda, mu) = 0,where f(1) is O(2)-equivariant and f(2) is D-n-equivariant with the orthogonal group actions on z is an element of R-2. Forced symmetry breaking occurs when the symmetry of the equation changes when parameters are varied. We explicitly apply our results to the branching of subharmonic solutions in a model periodic perturbation of an autonomous equation and sketch further applications.

Anelastic spectra (elastic energy absorption as a function of temperature) are reported which provide evidence that excess O in La2CuO4+delta starts forming two different types of defects already at very low concentrations, where no phase separation or changes in the type of O intercalation are believed to occur. The absorption peak with the lowest activation enthalpy, H/k(B) = 5600 K, is visible at lowest values of delta and is attributed to the hopping of single interstitial O2- ions. The second process, with a slightly slower dynamics, appears at higher values of delta and soon becomes preponderant over the former process. The latter process is proposed to be due to stable pairs of O atoms and is put in connection with the formation of partially covalent bonds between interstitial and apical oxygen; such bonds would reduce the doping efficiency of excess O at increasing delta. The geometry of the interstitial O defect is discussed. O 1998 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Since high-temperature superconductors were discovered, several studies have been made on their physical properties, attempting to associate them to the origin of superconductivity. Obviously, the oxygen atoms interstitially dissolved in the matrix have an important role in superconductivity, since they move easily in the lattice. In addition, they contribute to hole creation in the CuO2 planes. Anelastic spectroscopy ( internal friction) measurements are sensitive tools for the study of defects in solids, in particular for oxygen mobility. In this paper, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y samples with several different amounts of interstitial oxygen were analysed by means of anelastic spectroscopy measurements. The measurements were performed by using a torsion pendulum operating at a frequency of about 40 Hz. Complex relaxation structures were observed and attributed to the shift of the oxygen interstitial atoms in BiO chains.

Anelastic spectroscopy has been performed on a sample of superconducting oxide SmBa2Cu3O7-delta (SBCO) using a torsion pendulum operating with frequency around 10 Hz. A thermally activated relaxation peak is observed near 500 K with the activation enthalpy of 1.55 +/- 0.03 eV and the pre-exponential factor of approximately 10(-15) s, which is attributed to the mobility of non-stoichiometric oxygen by jumps in positions O1 and O5 of the lattice. In this manuscript we investigated experimentally the steady-state heat transfer to an important pseudoplastic fluid food, the soursop juice, flowing in laminar regime through circular and concentric annular ducts. The mean convection heat transfer coefficients, determined by measuring the bulk temperatures before and after the heating sections with constant temperatures of the tube walls, were used to correlate simple new empiric expressions to estimate the average Nusselt number in the thermal entrance of the considered geometries. In addition, the thermophysical properties of the tested fluid food, as well as the rheological behavior, being essential for the heat transfer analyses, were experimentally determined. In this article we examine an inverse heat convection problem of estimating unknown parameters of a parameterized variable boundary heat flux. The physical problem is a hydrodynamically developed, thermally developing, three-dimensional steady state laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid inside a circular sector duct, insulated in the flat walls and subject to unknown wall heat flux at the curved wall. Results are presented for polynomial and sinusoidal trial functions, and the unknown parameters as well as surface heat fluxes are determined. Depending on the nature of the flow, on the position of experimental points the inverse problem sometimes could not be solved. Therefore, an identification condition is defined to specify a condition under which the inverse problem can be solved. Once the parameters have been computed it is possible to obtain the statistical significance of the inverse problem solution. Therefore, approximate confidence bounds based on standard statistical linear procedure, for the estimated parameters, are analyzed and presented.

The effects of prenatal exposure of rat pups to 0.08 mg/kg deltamethrin (DTM) on physical, reflex and behavioral developmental parameters, on forced swimming and open-field behaviors, and on striatal monoamine levels at 60 days of age were observed. Maternal and offspring body weight, physical and reflex development were unaffected by the exposure to the pesticide. At 21 days of age, open-field locomotion frequency and immobility duration of male and female offspring were not different between control and exposed animals. However, male rearing frequency was increased in experimental animals. A decreased immobility latency to float and in general activity after the swimming test in male offspring was observed at adult age; no interference was detected in the float duration during the swimming test. In addition, these animals presented higher striatal 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) levels without modification in dopamine (DA) levels and an increased DOPAC/DA ratio. These data indicate a higher activity of the dopaminergic system in these animals. Noradrenaline (NA) levels were increased, while MHPG levels were not detectable in the system studied. Serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA) levels, as well as the homovanillic acid (HVA)/DA ratio, were not modified by the exposure to the pesticide. No changes were observed in swimming and open-field behaviors nor were there any changes in striatal monoamines or their metabolites in the female experimental group. In relation to the pesticide formula, the present data showing that prenatal exposure to DTM alters latency to float and the activity of striatal dopaminergic system might reflect a persistent effect of the pesticide on animal motor activity, mainly in males. on the other hand, the decrease in general activity observed in experimental male rats suggests higher levels of emotionality induced by previous exposure to the swimming behavior test in relation to control animals. Data gathered in the present study may be important for the assessment of the safety of pyrethroid insecticides. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This study was carried out to evaluate the performance and egg quality of laying hens, in their second laying cycle submitted to different forced-molting methods and three environmental temperatures. Six hundred layers were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with 15 treatments with five replicates of eight birds each, according to 5x3 factorial arrangement (molting methods vs. temperatures). The following forced-molting methods were applied: 90%, 70%, 50% dietary alfalfa inclusion, addition of 2,800 ppm zinc, and feed fasting. Temperatures were: 20 degrees C, 27 degrees C and 35 degrees C. At the end of each period of the second laying cycle, bird performance and egg quality were evaluated. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means were compared by orthogonal and polynomial contrasts. The highest alfalfa inclusion level (90% alfalfa and 10% basal diet) proved to be efficient as compared to the other methods, independently of temperature.

Time-of-flight measurements were carried out in orthorhombic sulfur for various fields, ranging from -2 to -20 kV/cm. No dependence of the mobility with the electric field was found but the current, normalized by the initial current, showed an electric field dependence at small times, decaying faster for larger electric field. After the failure of the usual models in explaining the resultsincluding the assumption of depth-dependent density of trapsa model assuming an extra mobility channel near the surface provided a reasonable set of parameters independent of the electric field. The measurements were carried out at 8.5, 29, 53, 68, and 79°C. © 1988 The American Physical Society.
