If religion has always historically had close ties to penitentiaries, it was until recently synonymous with Christianity. Nowadays, the religious context in prison has evolved towards secularization and pluralization, meaning that the traditional Christian chaplaincy faces new challenges. On the one hand, it is confronted with the specialization of fields of activity in prison and on the other hand, it must adapt to a growing number of prisoners from various religious origins and contribute to the respect of their religious rights. Thus, we witness the development of a duel process in prison chaplaincy. Firstly, the universalization of the role of the Christian chaplain who must assist all incarcerated men and women, regardless of their religion or confession. Secondly, the emergence of non Christian visiting minister with a linguistic, ethnic or religious specialization, like for instance Muslim representative intervening the Muslim prisoners. The aim of this contribution is to describe this duel process and discuss the legal and sociological implications.

- This thesis analyzes the "factual" and physical ordeal of a severe burn as experienced by victims of severe facial burns. In a few seconds, an accident provokes a biographical rupture and persons involved need time to integrate their new status. This thesis concentrates on the "reconstruction" modes of the relationship with oneself and with others, and on attempts to find an impossible "normal appearance" in public life. While being attentive to the modalities of interaction, the study uses comprehensive sociology based on observations and interviews. This thesis brings into sociology litde known views of those suffering severe facial burns. These views supplement certain media representations that influence perceptions and visibility of the people involved. Applying the concept of test, a key concept of pragmatic sociology, the progression of a severely burned person can be described by focusing on the initial moment: the accident. The recounting of this first challenge reveals the severely burned person's efforts to link the "before" and "after" the accident. A continuum of challenges follows. These tests occur when the severely burned person physically faces others in a public space and when visible discomfort and embarrassment show, reactions which we consider, following Erving Goffman's works, as situations of "interactional discomfort." Emphasis on interactional discomfort shows the necessity of expanding the sociology of severe burns to more than just adjustments to interactions. Based on Axel Honneth's works, we can read the management of interactions from another point of view, in which the severely burned person tries to avoid contempt. This work emphasizes interactional aptitudes, skills that act like rebounding springs, and allow the severely burned person to manage situations that might lead to contempt. Starting with descriptions of interactions, we have determined two forms of individual struggle that appear to be a search for recognition: on one hand, the "struggle against" too much visibility and against the strength of certain prejudices, and, on the other hand, a "struggle for" making known rtain invisible or less visible aspects of a severe burn.

Moissanite (natural SiC) has been recovered from podiform chromitites of several ophiolite complexes, including the Luobusa and Donqiao ophiolites in Tibet, the Semail ophiolite in Oman and the United Arab Emirates, and the Ray-Iz ophiolite of the Polar Urals, Russia. Taking these new occurrences with the numerous earlier reports of moissanite in diamondiferous kimberlites leads to the conclusion that natural SiC is a widespread mineral in the Earth's mantle, which implies at least locally extremely low redox conditions. The ophiolite moissanite grains are mostly fragments (20 to 150 mu m) with one or more crystal faces, but some euhedral hexagonal grains have also been recovered. Twinned crystals are common in chromitites from the Luobusa ophiolite. The moissanite is rarely colorless, more commonly light bluish-gray to blue or green. Many grains contain inclusions of native Si and Fe-Si alloys (FeSi(2), Fe(3)Si(7)). Secondary ion mass spectrometric (SIMS) analysis shows that the ophiolite-hosted moissanite has a distinctive (13)C-depleted isotopic composition (delta(13)C from -18 to -35 parts per thousand, n=36), much lighter than the main carbon reservoir in the upper mantle (delta(13)C near -5 parts per thousand). The compiled data from moissanite from kimberlites and other mantle settings share the characteristic of strongly (13)C-depleted isotopic composition. This suggests that moissanite originates from a separate carbon reservoir in the mantle or that its formation involved strong isotopic fractionation. The degree of fractionation needed to produce the observed moissanite compositions from the main C-reservoir would be unrealistically large at the high temperatures required for moissanite formation. Subduction of biogenic carbonaceous material could potentially satisfy both the unusual isotopic and redox constraints on moissanite formation, but this material would need to stay chemically isolated from the upper mantle until it reached the high-T stability field of moissanite. The origin of moissanite in the mantle is still unsolved, but all evidence from the upper mantle indicates that it cannot have formed there, barring special and local redox conditions. We suggest, alternatively, that moissanite may have formed in the lower mantle, where the existence of (13)C-depleted carbon is strongly supported by studies of extraterrestrial carbon (Mars, Moon, meteorites). The replication of circular DNA faces topological obstacles that need to be overcome to allow the complete duplication and separation of newly replicated molecules. Small bacterial plasmids provide a perfect model system to study the interplay between DNA helicases, polymerases, topoisomerases and the overall architecture of partially replicated molecules. Recent studies have shown that partially replicated circular molecules have an amazing ability to form various types of structures (supercoils, precatenanes, knots and catenanes) that help to accommodate the dynamic interplay between duplex unwinding at the replication fork and DNA unlinking by topoisomerases.

Oxygen isotope measurements using SIMS and laser-fluorination methods confirm the presence of concentric and sector zoning in low-temperature (200 degrees C to < 400 degrees C) hydrothermal quartz from Alpine veins. While concentric zoning is most readily explained by changes in the chemical composition of the fluid or temperature of crystallization, the reasons for sector zoning are more difficult to explain. Relative enrichment in (18)O for crystallographically different sectors of quartz corresponds to m > r > z. Sector zoning is, however, largely limited to the exterior zones of crystals and/or to crystals with large Al (> 1000 ppm) and trace element contents, probably formed at temperatures < 250 degrees C. Differences in delta(18)O between the prismatic (m) relative to the rhombohedral (r and z) growth sectors of up to 2 parts per thousand can be explained by a combination of a face-related crystallographic and/or a growth rate control. In contrast, isotopic sector zoning of up to about 1.5 parts per thousand amongst the different rhombohedral faces increases in parallel with the trace element content and is likely to represent disequilibrium growth. This is indicated by non-systematic, up to 2 parts per thousand, differences within single growth zones and the irregular, larger or smaller, delta(18)O values (of several permil) of the exterior compared to the inner zones of the same crystals. Disequilibrium growth may be related to the large trace element content incorporated into the growing quartz at lower temperatures (< 250 degrees C) and/or be related to fluid-vapour separation, allowing crystal growth from both a vapour as well as a liquid phase.

Using combined emotional stimuli, combining photos of faces and recording of voices, we investigated the neural dynamics of emotional judgment using scalp EEG recordings. Stimuli could be either combioned in a congruent, or a non-congruent way.. As many evidences show the major role of alpha in emotional processing, the alpha band was subjected to be analyzed. Analysis was performed by computing the synchronization of the EEGs and the conditions congruent vs. non-congruent were compared using statistical tools. The obtained results demonstrate that scalp EEG ccould be used as a tool to investigate the neural dynamics of emotional valence and discriminate various emotions (angry, happy and neutral stimuli).

The main objective of the proposed study is to use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools to determine the wind loads by accurate numerical simulations of air flow characteristics around large highway sign structures under severe wind speeds conditions. Fully three-dimensional Reynolds- Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations are used to estimate the total force on different panels, as well as the actual pressure distribution on the front and back faces of the panels. In particular, the present study investigates the effects of aspect ratio and sign spacing for regular panels, the effect of sign depth for the dynamic message signs that are now being used on Iowa highways, the effect induced by the presence of back-to-back signs, the effect of the presence of add-on exit signs, and the effect of the presence of trucks underneath the signs potentially creating “wind tunnel” effect.

BACKGROUND: Chronic disease management has been implemented for some time in several countries to tackle the increasing burden of chronic diseases. While Switzerland faces the same challenge, such initiatives have only emerged recently in this country. The aim of this study is to assess their feasibility, in terms of barriers, facilitators and incentives to participation. METHODS: To meet our aim, we used qualitative methods involving the collection of opinions of various healthcare stakeholders, by means of 5 focus groups and 33 individual interviews. All the data were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was then performed and five levels were determined to categorize the data: political, financial, organisational/ structural, professionals and patients. RESULTS: Our results show that, at each level, stakeholders share common opinions towards the feasibility of chronic disease management in Switzerland. They mainly mention barriers linked to the federalist political organization as well as to financing such programs. They also envision difficulties to motivate both patients and healthcare professionals to participate. Nevertheless, their favourable attitudes towards chronic disease management as well as the fact that they are convinced that Switzerland possesses all the resources (financial, structural and human) to develop such programs constitute important facilitators. The implementation of quality and financial incentives could also foster the participation of the actors. CONCLUSIONS: Even if healthcare stakeholders do not have the same role and interest regarding chronic diseases, they express similar opinions on the development of chronic disease management in Switzerland. Their overall positive attitude shows that it could be further implemented if political, financial and organisational barriers are overcome and if incentives are found to face the scepticism and non-motivation of some stakeholders.

Abstract Human experience takes place in the line of mental time (MT) created through 'self-projection' of oneself to different time-points in the past or future. Here we manipulated self-projection in MT not only with respect to one's life events but also with respect to one's faces from different past and future time-points. Behavioural and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging activity showed three independent effects characterized by (i) similarity between past recollection and future imagination, (ii) facilitation of judgements related to the future as compared with the past, and (iii) facilitation of judgements related to time-points distant from the present. These effects were found with respect to faces and events, and also suggest that brain mechanisms of MT are independent of whether actual life episodes have to be re-experienced or pre-experienced, recruiting a common cerebral network including the anteromedial temporal, posterior parietal, inferior frontal, temporo-parietal and insular cortices. These behavioural and neural data suggest that self-projection in time is a fundamental aspect of MT, relying on neural structures encoding memory, mental imagery and self.
