An investigation has been conducted to examine the morphological influence on fatigue life of low carbon steel with dual phase microstructure. The results showed that dual-phase microstructure, composed by ferrite and martensite had superior symmetrical bending fatigue strength when compared with ferrite-pearlite steel. Through those tests, evidences of different mechanisms were verified (such as ferrite cyclic hardening, slip band formation and beginning of crack nucleation and propagation). Based on the fatigue tests results, various mechanisms stages were discussed associated with different microstructure morphology. Copyright (C) 1996 Published by Elsevier B.V. Limited.

The mechanical activation is one of the most effective method for obtaining highly disperse system due to mechanical action stress fields form in solids during milling procedure. This effect results in changes of free energy, leading to release of heat, formation of a new surface, formation of different crystal lattice defects and initiation of solid-state chemical reaction. The accumulated deformation energy determines irreversible changes of crystal structure and consequently microstructure resulting in the change of their properties. Mechanochemical processing route has been developed recently for the production of intermetallic and alloy compounds. The intrinsic advantage of this process is that the solid-state reaction is activated due to mechanical energy instead of the temperature. It was shown that the chemical reactivity of starting materials could be improved significantly after mechanochemical activation and, subsequently, the calcination temperature was reduced. Besides, it was apparent that the mechanochemical treatment could enhance the reactivity of constituent oxides; however, the sintering process could not be avoided to develop the desired ceramics. A novel mechanochemical technique for synthesis of fine-grained perovskite structured powders has shown that it is possible to form perovskite at room temperature. The effect of milling on the formation of perovskite structure of barium titanate (BT), lead titanate (PT), PZT, PZN, magnesium niobate (PMN) and LM ceramic materials was analyzed. The dielectric properties of sintered ceramics are comparable with those prepared by other methods in the literature. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Results on the luminescence properties of Eu3+ in Ba2SiO4 sites and the presence of Eu3+-O2- associates are reported. The Ba2SiO4:Eu3+ emission spectra showed two groups of transitions that might be assigned to the D-5(0) --> F-7(0) one. In each group at least two lines were observed. This is possibly related to the different emission centers, attributed to Eu3+ occupying the Ba2+ sites, and to Eu3+-O2- associates in interstices. Excitation spectra presented two CT bands at 270 and 340 nm related to each emission center.

Barium strontium titanate (Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3) thin films have been prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a soft solution processing. X-ray diffraction and also micro-Raman spectroscopy showed that the Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films exhibited a tetragonal structure at room temperature. The presence of Raman active modes was clearly shown at the 299 and 725 cm(-1) peaks. The tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition in the Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films is broadened, and suppressed at about 35 degreesC, with a maximum dielectric constant of 948 (100 kHz). Electrical measurements for the prepared Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 thin films showed a remnant polarization (P-r) of 6.5 muC/cm(2), a coercive field (E-c) of 41 kV/cm, and good insulating properties. The dispersion of the refractive index is interpreted in terms of a single electronic oscillator at 6.97 eV. The direct band gap energy (E-g) and the refractive index (n) are estimated to be 3.3 eV and n = 2.27-2.10, respectively. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Metallic stearates were used as precursors to obtain BaTiO3. Barium and titanium stearate mixtures were homogenized in ball mill containing some amount of ammonium stearate. The mixture of the precursors was evaluated by simultaneous TG/ DTA and TMA, and residues from thermal decomposition were characterized by XRD and SEM. It could be verified that the residues from the thermal decomposition in both oxidant and inert atmospheres were the BaTiO3 but with characteristic morphological and crystalline aspects depending on the experimental conditions in which the mixtures of precursors were obtained. The deposition of thick film pastes by screen-printing is a relatively simple and convenient method to produce thicker layers with thickness up to 100 mum. In the present work, the barium titanate thick films were prepared from mechanically activated powders based on BaC03 and TiO2. After mixing, the powders were calcined at low temperature by slow heating and cooling rates. The thick films were deposited on to Al2O3 substrates through hybrid technology. The obtained films were fired at 850 degreesC together with electrode material (silver/palladium). The electrical properties of thick films: dielectric permittivity, dielectric losses, Curie temperature, hysteresis loop were reported. The obtained BT thick films can be applied in as multilayer capacitors or in gas sensor application. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper a piezoelectric composite membranes were developed for charge generator to promoter bone regeneration on defects sites. Is known that the osteogenesis process is induced by interactions between biological mechanisms and electrical phenomena. The membranes were prepared by mixing Barium Titanate (BT) powders and PVDF-TrFE (PVDF:TrFE = 60:40 mol%) on dimethylformamide medium. This precursor solution was dried and crystallized at 100degreesC for 12 hours. Composites membranes were obtained by following methods: solvent casting (SC), spincoating (SP), solvent extraction by water addition (WS) and hot pressing (HP).The microstructural analysis performed by SEM showed connectivity type 3-0 and 3-1 with high homogeneity for samples of ceramic volume fraction major than 0.50. Powder agglomerates within the polymer matrix was evidenced were observed for composites with the BT volume fraction major than 40%. The composite of ceramic fraction of 0.55 presented the best values of remanent polarization (similar to33 muC/cm(2)), but the flexibility of these composites with the larger ceramic fraction was significantly affected.For in vivo evaluation PVDF-TrFE/BT 90/10 membranes with 3cm larger were longitudinally implanted under tibiae of male rabbit. After 21 days the animals were sacrificed. By histological analyses were observed neo formed bone with a high mitotic activity. In the interface bone-membrane was evidenced a pronounced callus formation. These results encourage further applications of these membranes in bone-repair process.

In a previous report we studied theoretically the piezoelectric effect in barium titanate (BaTiO3) [O. Treu Filho, J.C. Pinheiro, R.T. Kondo, J. Mol. Struct. (THEOCHEM), 671 (2004) 71]. In this article we applied the Hartree-Fock (HF) theory in the investigation of piezoelectricity in LaFeO3. Initially, the generator coordinate HF (GCHF) method was used to build 22s14p, 30s19p13d, and 32s24p17d Gaussian basis sets for O(3p), Fe(D-5), and La(D-2) atoms. Then those basis sets were contracted to [7s6p], [13s8p6d], and [18s13p7d], respectively. The quality of the contracted basis sets in polyatomic calculations was evaluated through calculations of total and orbital energies (HOMO and HOMO-1) of (FeO1+)-Fe-2 and (LaO1+)-La-1. Finally, the contracted basis sets were supplemented with polarization and diffuse functions and used to investigate the piezoelectricity in LaFeO3. The calculated properties were dipole moment, total energy, and atomic charges and the analysis of those properties showed that covalent bonds constitute the electronic structure of [LaFCO3](2) fragment. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that LaFeO3 does not present piezoelectric properties. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The precipitation behaviour of a nickel free stainless steel containing 25% chromium, 17% manganese and 0.54% nitrogen, with duplex ferritic-austenitic microstructure, was studied using several complementary techniques of microstructural analysis after aging heat treatments between 600 and 1 000 degrees C for periods of lime between 15 and 6 000 min. During aging heat treatments, ferrite was decomposed into sigma phase and austenite by a eutectoid reaction, like in the Fe-Cr-Ni duplex stainless steel. Chromium nitride precipitation occurred in austenite, which had a high nitrogen supersaturation. Some peculiar aspects were observed in this austenite during its phase transformations. Chromium nitride precipitation occurred discontinuously in a lamellar morphology, such as pearlite in carbon steels. This kind of precipitation is not an ordinary observation in duplex stainless steels and the high levels of nitrogen in austenite can induce this type of precipitation, which has not been previously reported in duplex stainless steels. After chromium nitride precipitation in austenite, it was also observed sigma phase formation near the cells or colonies of discontinuously precipitated chromium nitride. Sigma phase formation was made possible by the depletion of nitrogen in those regions. Time-temperature-transformation (precipitation) diagrams were determined.

In this study, the effect of bismuth content on the crystal structure, morphology and electric properties of barium-bismuth-tantalate (BBT) ceramics was explored with the aid of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microcopy (SEM), dielectric properties and ferroelectric hysteresis loops. BaBi2Ta2O9 (BBT) ceramics have been successfully prepared by the solid-state reaction. The BBT phase was crystallized at 900 degreesC for 2 h. The excess of bismuth controls the grain size, affecting the density of the material. Measurements of dieletric constant and dieletric losses confirm that the material is a ferroeletric with a Curie temperature around 77 degreesC. The dieletric constant measured at room temperature was 400, with a dielectric loss of 0.03. Both the phase-transition behaviour and ferroelectric properties, such as spontaneous polarization (P-s), showed a dependence on Bi content. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, the effect of Nb2O5 addition on the microstructure of BaTiO3 was studied. From XRD diagrams, a diminution in tetragonality parameters with an increase in dopant concentration was observed. In order to determine morphology and composition of secondary phases in niobium-doped barium titanate, EDAX and SEM analyses were carried out. It was found that a concentration of dopant higher than 0.15 mol% leads to fine-grained BaTiO3 without abnormal grain growth. Otherwise, compositions of secondary phases correspond to the titanium-rich region in the BaO-TiO2 phase diagram. Besides, the titanium content in the precipitate increases with the Nb2O5 addition. Polycrystalline BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films having a tetragonal scheelite structure were prepared at different temperatures. Soluble precursors such as barium carbonate, lead acetate trihydrate and tungstic acid, as starting materials, were mixed in aqueous solution. The thin films were deposited on silicon, platinum-coated silicon and quartz substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the thin films were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction, and specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, respectively. Nucleation stages and surface morphology evolution of thin films on silicon substrates have been studied by atomic force microscopy. XRD characterization of these films showed that BaWO4 and PbWO4 phase crystallize at 500 degreesC from an inorganic amorphous phase. FTIR spectra revealed the complete decomposition of the organic ligands at 500 degreesC and the appearance of two sharp and intense bands between 1000 and 600 cm(-1) assigned to vibrations of the antisymmetric stretches resulting from the high crystallinity of both thin films. The optical properties were also studied. It was found that BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films have Eg = 5.78 eV and 4.20 eV, respectively, of a direct transition nature. The excellent microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity results confirmed that soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films. The most popular handgun in Brazil is the single round-barrel caliber 0.38 revolver. In recent years, however, owing to the modernization of police arms and their availability on the legal and illicit markets, pistols have become increasingly popular and currently represent about 20% of police seizures. In a previous paper we presented a novel collection method for gunshot residues (GSR) using a sampling procedure based on ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution as a complexing agent on moistened swabs with subsequent detection using sector field-high resolution-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (SF-HR-ICP-MS). In the present paper, we discuss the capability of this methodology to identify antimony (Sb), barium (Ba) and lead (Pb) on the hands of volunteers after shot tests with 9 mm and 0.40 in. caliber pistols. Two types of munitions were tested: 9 mm Taurus and clean range. The use of a technique with high sensitivity, such as SF-HR-ICP-MS, permits the identification of low concentrations (less than 1 mu g/L) of metals in firearm residue and constitutes a powerful tool in forensic science. We also discuss the importance of the sampling procedure, including collection from a different body part than the gun hand of the suspect. Comparison of the analytical data obtained allows clear discrimination between samples from the hands of shooters and non-shooters. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Xerogels were prepared from zirconium, barium, aluminum, lanthanum and lithium acetates, corresponding to a Li containing ZBLA composition. The study of their thermal properties (DSC, TG/DTG, FT-IR) showed that they might be used as chemically stable precursors in the preparation of fluoride glasses. Hydrofluoric acid in solution was chosen as a mild fluorinating agent. This newly proposed technique of fluorinating allowed to obtain high quality ZBLALi glass which presents the advantage of higher thermal stability and homogeneity in comparison with the glass obtained using individual commercial fluorides.

Magnesium and zinc ferrites have been prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The organic material decomposition was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The variation of crystalline phases and particle morphology with calcination temperature were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), respectively. The colors of the ferrites were evaluated using colorimetry. Magnesium ferrite crystallizes above 800 degrees C, presenting a yellow-orange color with a reflectance peak at the 600-650 nm range, while zinc ferrite crystallizes at 600 degrees C, with a reflectance peak between 650-700 nm, corresponding to the red-brick color.
