Solvents represent an important group of environmental pollutants to which people are exposed daily in the workplace. The physico chemical properties of solvents may result in disturbances to cellular structures, including damage to DNA. However, the effects of mixtures of solvents are not well known. Mutations caused by environmental agents are related to cancer development and other degenerative diseases. The work in a research laboratory that uses several types of solvents is equally predisposed to these hazards. In this study, we evaluated the mutagenicity of urine from 29 subjects exposed occupationally to solvents in a chemistry research laboratory and 29 subjects without occupational exposure (controls). Urine samples were collected in polyethylene containers at the end of the work shift. For the concentration and extraction of urine samples the XAD-2 resin was used with acetone as an eluting agent. Several strains of Salmonella typhimurium (TA100, TA98, TA97a, TA1535, YG1024) should be used to assess mutagenic susceptibilities among workers exposed to organic solvents. Different doses of extract (1.5; 3.0; 6.0 and 12.0 m/ equivalents of urine per plate) were tested on S. typhimurium strains TA100 and YG 1024, with and without metabolic activation. The mutagenic activity, measured in Salmonella typhimurium YGI1024 with S9 mix, was significantly greater in urine from workers than from controls (p <= 0.05). These results indicate the relevance of using biomarkers to assess the risk of occupational exposure to organic solvents.

An efficient heuristic algorithm is presented in this work in order to solve the optimal capacitor placement problem in radial distribution systems. The proposal uses the solution from the mathematical model after relaxing the integrality of the discrete variables as a strategy to identify the most attractive bus to add capacitors to each step of the heuristic algorithm. The relaxed mathematical model is a nonlinear programming problem and is solved using a specialized interior point method, The algorithm still incorporates an additional strategy of local search that enables the finding of a group of quality solutions after small alterations in the optimization strategy. Proposed solution methodology has been implemented and tested in known electric systems getting a satisfactory outcome compared with metaheuristic methods.The tests carried out in electric systems known in specialized literature reveal the satisfactory outcome of the proposed algorithm compared with metaheuristic methods. Today's scientific interest in tissue engineering for organ transplantations and regeneration from stem cells, allied with recent observations on biostimulation of tissues and cells by laser radiation, stands as a strong motivation for the present work, in which we examine the effects of the low power laser radiation onto planarians under regenerative process. To investigate those effects, a number of 60 amputated worms were divided in three study groups: a control group and two other groups submitted to daily 1 and 3 min long laser treatment sections at similar to 910 W/m(2) power density. A 685 nm diode laser with 35 mW optical power was used. Samples were sent to histological analysis at the 4th, the 7th and the 15th (lays after amputation. A remarkable increase in stem cells counts for the fourth day of regeneration was observed when the regenerating worms was stimulated by the laser radiation. Our findings encourage further research works on the influence of optical radiation onto stem cells and tissue regeneration. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This report highlights the activities carried out by ECLAC in the Caribbean subregion between 1 January 2014 and 31 March 2015. Subprogramme 13 of the ECLAC programme of work 2014-2015 (“Subregional activities in the Caribbean”) covers the Commission’s work in Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, as well as Anguilla, Aruba, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, Sint Maarten, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the United States Virgin Islands. Subprogramme 12 (“Subregional activities in Central America, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Mexico”) includes activities conducted in the Caribbean member States of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. In addition, countries of the Caribbean were included in activities organized under the 12 other substantive subprogrammes of the ECLAC programme of work 2014-2015, namely: (i) linkages with the global economy, integration and regional cooperation; (ii) production and innovation; (iii) macroeconomic policies and growth; (iv) financing for development; (v) social development and equality; (vi) mainstreaming the gender perspective in regional development; (vii) population and development; (viii) sustainable development and human settlements; (ix) natural resources and infrastructure; (x) planning of public administration; (xi) statistics; and (xii) support for regional and subregional integration and cooperation processes and organizations.

Este experimento teve como objetivo avaliar a possibilidade da utilização de fêmeas zebuínas de elevada qualidade genética, com problemas de fertilidade, adquiridos após um programa de transferência convencional de embriões, como doadoras de ovócitos em um programa de Ovum Pick Up e Produção In Vitro de embriões. Fêmeas da raça Nelore (n=16) (Bos taurus indicus), com idade média de 11 anos e 7 meses, foram submetidas às mesmas condições de ambiente, alimentação e manejo. Estes animais foram retirados do programa de T.E. por apresentarem problemas de fertilidade (cistos ovarianos, infecções genitais, mucometra e alguns casos de repetições de cio sem causa aparente). Os animais foram divididos em dois grupos conforme o tipo de patologia: GRUPO I (n=08) composto por animais que apresentaram patologias ovarianas (cistos) e GRUPO II (n=08) formado por animais com patologias extra ovarianas, ambos os grupos foram submetidos à aspiração folicular (OPU) utilizando dois tipos de agulhas (21G ; 19G ) e pressões (55 e 70mmHg) divididos em quatro tratamentos (T1 = 55/21G; T2 = 55/19G; T3 = 70/21G e T4 = 70/19G), posteriormente os ovócitos submeteramse a PIV. Foram realizadas 149 aspirações e colhidos 879 ovócitos (5,9 4,88) onde GRAU I = 16%; GRAU II = 43%; GRAU III = 21% e GRAU IV = 20%. As médias de ovócitos colhidos no GRUPO I foram (T1 = 7,06 5,10; T2= 7,00 3,64; T3 = 10,60 6,51 e T4 = 2,78 2,59) para os animais pertencentes ao GRUPO II obteve-se (T1= 4,90 4,47; T2= 2,93 3,05; T3 = 6,11 4,11 e T4 = 2,70 2,00). Para as médiasde ovócitos viáveis os resultados foram os seguintes: (T1 = 4,35 3,01; T2 = 4,88 2,96; T3 = 6,87 3,91 e T4 = 1,89 1,90) para o GRUPO I e (T1 = 2,70 2,22; T2 =1,92 1,98; T3 = 3,47 2,27 e T4 = 2,00 1,05) para o GRUPO II. Neste experimento foram levados à PIV 538 ovócitos dos quais 161 (32,85%) clivaram e 65 (13,26%) resultaram em Mórula ou Blastocistos. A análise estatística dos resultados não demonstrou diferença significativa entre os grupos quanto a colheita ovocitária. Quando analisada somente a pressão de sucção, foi observado que o tipo de agulha está diretamente relacionado a pressão da bomba de vácuo. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos com o tratamento T3 = 70/21G, além disso pode-se observar que as melhores médias de ovócitos colhidos foram as obtidas no grupo de animais que apresentaram cistos ovarianos (GRUPO I). Desta forma, concluímos neste experimento que a utilização da técnica de OPU/PIV é uma alternativa de grande utilidade no prolongamento da vida reprodutiva de animais zebuínos com alterações na fertilidade.

In this action research study of my classroom of 8th grade mathematics students, I investigated whether cooperative learning would lead to a better understanding of the mathematical concepts and thus more success for the students. I used my three eighth grade classes with two using cooperative groups and the third not. I discovered that the students who wanted to work in cooperative groups were more successful than they had been. I also discovered that the grouping itself has a great effect on how the group works together. The wrong grouping of students can lead to disaster and many headaches for the teacher. Overall the two classes that used cooperative groups did better grade wise than the one class that was taught using the traditional way of not using cooperative groups. As a result of this research, I plan to continue using cooperative groups but will be more aware of the students who are grouped together.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between working at night and increased body weight in nursing. In addition, we evaluated the differences in the proportion of variables sociodemographic, work and health, according to the work shift and their association with body mass index. Methods: Based on questionnaires, we obtained data from 446 nursing professionals about aspects of their job, health and lifestyle. We performed linear and logistic regression analysis. Results: Working at night is associated with a weight gain greater than (beta=0.24 kg/m(2)) working during the day (beta=0.15 kg/m(2)), as well as with aging (beta=0.16 kg/m(2)) and duration of working in nursing (beta=0.18 kg/m(2)). Night workers have a higher educational level, have been working for more years in nursing and also in the current shift, do not have diabetes and have reported longer sleep than day workers. There are also a higher number of smokers among the night workers than day workers. Logistic regression analysis also showed the more time to work in nursing and as an assistant was more likely to develop overweight/obesity. Conclusion: Working at the night contributes to more weight gain than the day shift, aging and duration of working in nursing.

In this work, in vitro and in vivo antioxidant properties of the marine algae Halimeda monile were assessed and the levels of some of its compounds likely to be responsible for such properties were determined. The estimated contents of total polyphenols, chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids were 179.5, 356.3, 452.8 and 42.2 mu g/g dry weight seaweed, respectively. The presence of terpenoids and flavonoids was also observed. The antioxidant activity of two polar fractions from H. monile (lyophilized aqueous extract and free phenolic acid fraction) was evaluated using three antioxidant assays: ferric reducing antioxidant power, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and lipid peroxidation. Treatment of CCl4-induced liver damage in rats with extracts resulted in lower serum thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances levels and higher hepatic glutathione concentrations compared to those observed in the CCl4-treated group. Also, a significant increase in catalase activity was detected after treatment with the extracts. These results suggest that the seaweed H. monile could be a potential source for natural antioxidants.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between multiple cryoprobes was investigated to determine whether they work in an additive or synergistic fashion in an in vivo animal model because 1.47 mm (17-gauge) cryoprobes have been introduced to the armamentarium for renal cryotherapy. METHODS Laparoscopic-guided percutaneous cryoablation was performed in both renal poles of 3 pigs using 3 IceRod cryoprobes. These 12 cryolesions were compared with 12 cryolesions using a single IceRod cryoprobe. Each cycle consisted of two 10-minute freeze cycles separated by a 5-minute thaw. The iceball volume was measured using intraoperative ultrasonography. The kidneys were harvested, and cryolesion surface area was calculated. The lesions were fixed and excised to obtain a volume measurement. Statistical analysis was used to compare the single probe results multiplied by 3 to the multiple probe group for iceball volume, cryolesion surface area, and cryolesion volume. RESULTS The iceball volume for the first freeze cycle for the single cryoprobe multiplied by 3 was 8.55 cm(3) compared with 9.79 cm(3) for the multiple cryoprobe group (P = .44) and 10.01 cm(3) versus 16.58 cm(3) for the second freeze (P = .03). The cryolesion volume for the single cryoprobe multiplied by 3 was 11.29 cm(3) versus 14.75 cm(3) for the multiple cyroprobe group (P = .06). The gross cryolesion surface area for the single cryoprobe multiplied by 3 was 13.14 cm(2) versus 13.89 cm(2) for the multiple probe group (P = .52). CONCLUSION The cryolesion created by 3 simultaneously activated 1.47-mm probes appears to be larger than that of an additive effect. The lesions were significantly larger as measured by ultrasonography and nearly so (P = .06) as measured by the gross cryolesion volume. UROLOGY 79: 484.e1-484.e6, 2012. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. This theoretical reflection intends to show the inter-subjective relationship that takes place in health and nursing practices under the following theoretical perspectives: Institutional Analysis, Psychodynamics of Labor and the Theory of Communicative Action, with an emphasis on the latter. Linking these concepts to the Marxist approach to work in the field of health emerges from recognizing the need for its continuous reconstruction-in this case, with a view to understand the interaction and communication intrinsic to work in action. The theory of Communicative Action seeks to consider these two inextricable dimensions: work as productive action and as interaction. The first corresponds to instrumental action based on technical rules with a production-guided rationale. The second refers to the interaction that takes place as communicative action and seeks understanding among subjects. We assume that adopting this theoretical perspective in the analysis of health and nursing practices opens new possibilities for clarifying its social and historical process and inter-subjective connections.
