The propagation of an initially planar front is studied within the framework of the photosensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction modulated by a smooth spatial variation of the local front velocity in the direction perpendicular to front propagation. Under this modulation, the wave front develops several fingers corresponding to the local maxima of the modulation function. After a transient, the wave front achieves a stationary shape that does not necessarily coincide with the one externally imposed by the modulation. Theoretical predictions for the selection criteria of fingers and steady-state velocity are experimentally validated.

We present computational approaches as alternatives to a recent microwave cavity experiment by S. Sridhar and A. Kudrolli [Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 2175 (1994)] on isospectral cavities built from triangles. A straightforward proof of isospectrality is given, based on the mode-matching method. Our results show that the experiment is accurate to 0.3% for the first 25 states. The level statistics resemble those of a Gaussian orthogonal ensemble when the integrable part of the spectrum is removed.

The behavior of chemical waves advancing through a disordered excitable medium is investigated in terms of percolation theory and autowave properties in the framework of the light-sensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. By controlling the number of sites with a given illumination, different percolation thresholds for propagation are observed, which depend on the relative wave transmittances of the two-state medium considered.

We study front propagation in stirred media using a simplified modelization of the turbulent flow. Computer simulations reveal the existence of the two limiting propagation modes observed in recent experiments with liquid phase isothermal reactions. These two modes respectively correspond to a wrinkled although sharp propagating interface and to a broadened one. Specific laws relative to the enhancement of the front velocity in each regime are confirmed by our simulations.

We investigate chaotic, memory, and cooling rate effects in the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model by doing thermoremanent (TRM) and ac susceptibility numerical experiments and making a detailed comparison with laboratory experiments on spin glasses. In contrast to the experiments, the Edwards-Anderson model does not show any trace of reinitialization processes in temperature change experiments (TRM or ac). A detailed comparison with ac relaxation experiments in the presence of dc magnetic field or coupling distribution perturbations reveals that the absence of chaotic effects in the Edwards-Anderson model is a consequence of the presence of strong cooling rate effects. We discuss possible solutions to this discrepancy, in particular the smallness of the time scales reached in numerical experiments, but we also question the validity of the Edwards-Anderson model to reproduce the experimental results.

We point out that using the heat kernel on a cone to compute the first quantum correction to the entropy of Rindler space does not yield the correct temperature dependence. In order to obtain the physics at arbitrary temperature one must compute the heat kernel in a geometry with different topology (without a conical singularity). This is done in two ways, which are shown to agree with computations performed by other methods. Also, we discuss the ambiguities in the regularization procedure and their physical consequences.

Starting from the radiative transfer equation, we obtain an analytical solution for both the free propagator along one of the axes and an arbitrary phase function in the Fourier-Laplace domain. We also find the effective absorption parameter, which turns out to be very different from the one provided by the diffusion approximation. We finally present an analytical approximation procedure and obtain a differential equation that accurately reproduces the transport process. We test our approximations by means of simulations that use the Henyey-Greenstein phase function with very satisfactory results.

It has been suggested that a solution to the transport equation which includes anisotropic scattering can be approximated by the solution to a telegrapher's equation [A.J. Ishimaru, Appl. Opt. 28, 2210 (1989)]. We show that in one dimension the telegrapher's equation furnishes an exact solution to the transport equation. In two dimensions, we show that, since the solution can become negative, the telegrapher's equation will not furnish a usable approximation. A comparison between simulated data in three dimensions indicates that the solution to the telegrapher's equation is a good approximation to that of the full transport equation at the times at which the diffusion equation furnishes an equally good approximation.

Este texto objetiva oferecer uma breve panorâmica da teoria psicossociológica das representações sociais, estabelecendo algumas pontes com as teorias feministas de gênero. Nesse sentido, percorre as origens e fundamentos da teoria de Moscovici, as suas variações e alguns pontos de convergência com as teorias feministas.

Este artigo busca salientar a importância da metacognição para os processos de aprendizagem e para o sucesso escolar. Para tanto, discute a necessidade de se construir, nas salas de aula, uma cultura do pensar, que propicie aos alunos: a. uma forma de explicitar, desde cedo, modalidades de pensamento, tornando-as, assim, passíveis de ser compartilhadas; b. um estímulo ou motivação para pensar, de forma a alcançar decisões acertadas; c. a coragem para enfrentar situações novas; d. a transferência de estratégias e conhecimentos gerados em um dado contexto para outros. Um aspecto central na implementação de uma cultura do pensamento é desenvolver habilidades metacognitivas, pois é por meio delas que se torna possível a elaboração de conhecimentos e formas de pensar que assegurem maior possibilidade de sucesso e generalização, bem como a aquisição da autonomia na gestão da aprendizagem e na construção de uma auto-imagem de aprendiz competente. Exemplos de como implementar essa proposta são fornecidos, destacando como a organização do ensino torna os alunos sujeitos de sua própria aprendizagem.
