The finite element method is used to analyze the elastodynamic response of a columnar thermal barrier coating due to normal impact and oblique impact by an erosive particle. An assessment is made of the erosion by crack growth from preexisting flaws at the edge of each column: it is demonstrated that particle impacts can be sufficiently severe to give rise to columnar cracking. First, the transient stress state induced by the normal impact of a circular cylinder or a sphere is calculated in order to assess whether a 2D calculation adequately captures the more realistic 3D behavior. It is found that the transient stress states for the plane strain and axisymmetric models are similar. The sensitivity of response to particle diameter and to impact velocity is determined for both the cylinder and the sphere. Second, the transient stress state is explored for 2D oblique impact by a circular cylindrical particle and by an angular cylindrical particle. The sensitivity of transient tensile stress within the columns to particle shape (circular and angular), impact angle, impact location, orientation of the angular particle, and to the level of friction is explored in turn. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the effect of inclining the thermal barrier coating columns upon their erosion resistance. © 2011 The American Ceramic Society.

The damage mechanism of a cracked material due to laser beam thermal shock is an important problem when the interactions of high power laser beam with materials are studied. The transient thermal stress intensity factors (TSIFs) for a center crack in an infinite plate subjected to laser beam thermal shock are investigated. When the crack is in the heat affected zone, the compressive thermal stress causes the crack surface to come into contact with each other over a certain contact length, but the high tensile stresses around the crack tip tend to open the crack. In this case, the problem may be treated as a pair of embedded cracks problem with a smooth closure condition of the center crack. The TSIFs and the crack contact lengths are calculated with different laser beam spatial shapes. The TSIFs induced by thermal shock are in marked different from those induced by general mechanical loading.

The internal stresses in a duplex coating involving a prequenched layer are believed to change if it is exposed to thermal loading. To characterise the internal stresses in such a duplex coating, a gradient model of finite element method is set up. The initial stress within the substrate developed in as quenching and the internal stresses due to the tempering of the prequenched layer ( TPQL) in such a duplex coating are calculated. The synthetical internal stresses in coating can be estimated by superposing uniform initial stresses developed during plating. The results indicate that the residual tensile stresses due to fabrication in coating will be decreased greatly, or even synthetical compressive internal stresses may arise in the coating.

We report a previously unknown body-centered-tetragonal structure for ZnO. This structure results from a phase transformation from wurtzite in [0001]-oriented nanorods during uniaxial tensile loading and is the most stable phase for ZnO when stress is above 7 GPa. The stress-induced phase transformation has important implications for the electronic, piezoelectric, mechanical, and thermal responses of ZnO. The discovery of this polymorph brings about a more complete understanding of the extent and nature of polymorphism in ZnO. A crystalline structure-load triaxiality map is developed to summarize the relationship between structure and loading.

Flexible organic elastomeric nanoparticles (ENP) and two kinds of rigid inorganic silica nanoparticles were dispersed respectively into a bisphenol-A epoxy resin in order to tailor and compare the performance of mechanical properties. It was found that the well-dispersed flexible ENP greatly enhanced the toughness of the epoxy with the cost of modulus and strength. Comparatively, the rigid silica nanoparticles improved Young's modulus, tensile strength and fracture toughness simultaneously. Both fumed and sol-gel-formed nanosilica particles conducted similar results in reinforcing the epoxy resin, although the latter exhibited almost perfect nanoparticle dispersion in matrix. The toughening mechanisms of nanocomposites were further discussed based on fractographic analysis.

The fracture toughness and interfacial adhesion properties of a coating on its substrate are considered to be crucial intrinsic parameters determining performance and reliability of coating-substrate system. In this work, the fracture toughness and interfacial shear strength of a hard and brittle Cr coating on a normal medium carbon steel substrate were investigated by means of a tensile test. The normal medium carbon steel substrate electroplated with a hard and brittle Cr coating was quasi-statically stretched to induce an array of parallel cracks in the coating. An optical microscope was used to observe the cracking of the coating and the interfacial decohesion between the coating and the substrate during the loading. It was found that the cracking of the coating initiated at critical strain, and then the number of the cracks of the coating per unit axial distance increased with the increase in the tensile strain. At another critical strain, the number of the cracks of the coating became saturated, i.e. the number of cracks per unit axial distance became a constant after this critical strain. Based on the experiment result, the fracture toughness of the brittle coating can be determined using a mechanical model. Interestingly, even when the whole specimen fractured completely under an extreme strain of the substrate, the interfacial decohesion or buckling of the coating on its substrate was completely absent. The test result is different from that appeared in the literature though the identical test method and the brittle coating/ductile metal substrate system are taken. It was found that this difference can be attributed to an important mechanism that the Cr coating on the steel substrate has a good adhesion, and the ultimate interfacial shear strength between the Cr coating and the steel substrate has exceeded the maximum shear flow strength level of the steel substrate. This result also indicates that the maximum shear flow strength level of the ductile steel substrate can be only taken as a lower bound estimate on the ultimate shear strength of the interface. This estimation of the ultimate interfacial shear strength is consistent with the theoretical analysis and prediction presented in the literature.

Microtwins are frequently observed in face-centered-cubic (fcc) metal nanowires with low stacking fault energy. The authors have previously reported that the tensile Yield strength of copper nanowires can be increased by, the presence of twin boundaries. lit this work, simulations are carried out under both uniaxial tension and compression loading, to demonstrate that the strengthening effects are inherent to these nanowires, independent of the loading condition (tensile/compressive). It appears that the strengthening mechanism of the twinned nanowires can be attributed to stress redistribution due to the change of crystallographic orientations across twin boundaries, which requires larger external stress to make them Yield as compared to the twin-free wire.

A novel stress-strain relation with two stages of linear elastic deformation is observed in [0 0 0 1]-oriented ZnO nanorods under uniaxial tensile loading. This phenomenon results from a phase transformation from wurtzite (WZ, P6(3)mc space group) to a body-centered tetragonal structure with four-atom rings (denoted as BCT-4) belonging to the P4(2)/mnm space group. The analysis here focuses on the effects of nanorod size and temperature on the phase transformation and the associated mechanical behavior. It is found that as size is increased from 19.5 to 45.5 angstrom, the critical stress for nucleation of the transformation decreases by 25% from 21.90 to 16.50 GPa and the elastic moduli of the WZ- and BCT-4-structured nanorods decrease by 24% (from 299.49 to 227.51 GPa) and 38% (from 269.29 to 166.86 GPa), respectively. A significant temperature effect is also observed, with the critical stress for transformation initiation decreasing 87.8% from 17.89 to 2.19 GPa as temperature increases from 300 to 1500 K. Crack propagation and strain field evolution in two metallic glassy ribbons are studied using in situ scanning electron microscopy and the white digital speckle correlation method. Strain state at the crack tip, which depends heavily on the fracture toughness, plays a key role in fracture. A high degree of shear strain concentration in tough glassy ribbon can satisfy the critical shear strain, resulting in shear fracture, whereas a high degree of linear strain concentration in brittle glassy ribbon can initiate normal tensile fracture. Microstructure characterization is important for controlling the quality of laser welding. In the present work, a detailed microstructure characterization by transmission electron microscopy was carried out on the laser welding cast Ni-based superalloy K418 turbo disk and alloy steel 42CrMo shaft and an unambiguous identification of phases in the weldment was accomplished. It was found that there are gamma-FeCrNiC austenite solid solution dendrites as the matrix, (Nb, Ti) C type MC carbides, fine and dispersed Ni-3 Al gamma' phase as well as Laves particles in the interdendritic region of the seam zone. A brief discussion was given for their existence based on both kinetic and thermodynamic principles. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The transitions between the different contact models which include the Hertz, Bradley, Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR), Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) and Maugis-Dugdale (MD) models are revealed by analyzing their contact pressure profiles and surface interactions. Inside the contact area, surface interaction/adhesion induces tensile contact pressure around the contact edge. Outside the contact area, whether or not to consider the surface interaction has a significant influence on the contact system equilibrium. The difference in contact pressure due to the surface interaction inside the contact area and the equilibrium influenced by the surface interaction outside the contact area are physically responsible for the different results of the different models. A systematic study on the transitions between different models is shown by analyzing the contact pressure profiles and the surface interactions both inside and outside the contact area. The definitions of contact radius and the flatness of contact surfaces are also discussed. (C) Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2008.

Based on detailed x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy we have found body-centered-cubic (bcc) Ni upon room-temperature rolling of nanocrystalline (nc) face-centered-cubic (fcc) Ni. The bcc phase forms via the Kurdjumov-Sachs (KS) martensitic transformation mechanism when the von Mises equivalent strain exceeds similar to 0.3, much higher than accessible in tensile testing. The fcc and bcc phases keep either the KS or the Nishiyama-Wasserman orientation relationship. Our results provide insights into the deformation physics in nc Ni, namely, the fcc-to-bcc phase transformation can also accommodate plasticity at large plastic strains. Metallic nanowires have many attractive properties such as ultra-high yield strength and large tensile elongation. However, recent experiments show that metallic nanowires often contain grain boundaries, which are expected to significantly affect mechanical properties. By using molecular dynamics simulations, here, we demonstrate that polycrystalline Cu nanowires exhibit tensile deformation behavior distinctly different from their single-crystal counterparts. A significantly lowered yield strength was observed as a result of dislocation emission from grain boundaries rather than from free surfaces, despite of the very high surface to volume ratio. Necking starts from the grain boundary followed by fracture, resulting in reduced tensile ductility. The high stresses found in the grain boundary region clearly play a dominant role in controlling both inelastic deformation and fracture processes in nanoscale objects. These findings have implications for designing stronger and more ductile structures and devices on nanoscale.

Barium-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube yarns were fabricated by drawing and twisting multiwalled carbon nanotube forests through a solution containing barium nitrate. After heat activation under vacuum, the functionalized yarns were enriched in barium oxide due to the high surface-to-volume ratio of the nanotubes. The cathodes exhibited good thermionic properties, with a work function as low as 1.73-2.06 eV and thermionic current density that exceeded 185 mA/cm(2) in a field of 850 V/5 mm at 1317 K. The barium-functionalized yarns had high tensile strength of up to 420 MPa and retained strength of similar to 250 MPa after a 2 h activation process. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.
