Contains one sewn volume of work orders for the construction of University Hall in the hand of Loammi Baldwin between May 1813 and May 1814. The volume contains 46 completed work orders for supplies and services for "building the new Dining Halls and Chapel in Cambridge" payable to Hon. John Davis, Harvard treasurer. Completed work orders are noted with the name of the payee, amount paid, and the supplies or services fulfilled. Work orders 47 through 60 in the volume are unused.

Almanac containing one laid-in leaf and interleaved pages with entries in John Winthrop's hand. The interleaved pages include entries include brief, nearly daily notes of social engagements and travel by Winthrop during the year the Winthrops were forced to evacuate Cambridge because of the Revolutionary War. The short entries include notes of the Battle of Concord (April 19), a fire in Boston (May 17), the Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17), the choosing of councillors at Concord (June 21), and the notable entries "wth Genl Washington (August 12)" and "All day packg up Apparatus & Library" (June 16). The laid-in leaf contains an account of household purchases made while the Winthrops were living with Nehemiah Abbot Andover from May to June and later in Concord. The laid-in leaf is written on a note beginning "Mr. Winthrop presents his most respectful compliments to the Hon'ble Col. Hancock and to the rest of the Gentlemen Select-men..."

Folio-sized leaf containing a handwritten copy of stanzas 13-24 of "An elegy on the late Rt. Hon. W------ P---, Esq," a satirical poem about William Pitt first published in London in 1766. The excerpt begins "Where the dull slave, or Scycophant confess'd," and ends, "And swells quite crimson'd with Britania's Blood." The copy is marked with scribbles.

Recto of wrapper reads: "Oct. 31, 1740 to June 24, 1742. Papers relative to the charges against & defence made by Nathan Prince in 1741. Examined & done with." Verso reads "Hon. President [Josiah] Quincy." These annotations suggest that the records in this collection were consulted by Quincy, who served as Harvard's President from 1829 to 1845. It is likely that he used them when writing his two-volume History of Harvard University, which includes a lengthy passage about Prince and his trials at Harvard.

Hector Orr began recording entries in this commonplace book during his first year as a student at Harvard and continued writing in the volume sporadically until 1804. The entries written while he was a student, from 1789 to 1792, include themes written on the following topics: Time, Discontent, Patriotism, Virtue, Conscience, Patience, Avarice, Compassion, Mortality, Self-knowledge, Benevolence, Morning, Anger, Profanity, Bribery, Autumn and Winter, Hermitage, Conscience and Anticipation. He also wrote detailed entries about the forensic disputations in which he and his classmates participated, explaining both the affirmative and negative positions. One of these disputations involved discussion of the Stamp Act, which was then quite recent history. Orr's entries about the disputations list the names of students involved and specify their position in the argument.

Introduction: Mechanical stress is often associated to interverterbal disc (IVD) degeneration and the effect of mechanical loading on IVD has been studied and reviewed.1,2 Previously, expression of heat shock proteins, HSP70 and HSP27 has been found in pathological discs.3 However, there is no direct evidence on whether IVD cells respond to the mechanical loading by expression of HSPs. The objective of this study is to investigate the stress response of IVD cells during compressive loading in an organ culture. Materials and Methods: Fresh adult bovine caudal discs were cultured with compressive loading applied at physiological range. Effect of loading type (static and dynamic) and repeated loading (2 hours per day for 2 days) were studied. Nucleus pulposus (NP) and annulus fibrosus (AF) of the IVD were retrieved at different time points: right after loading and right after resting. Positive control discs were heat shocked (43°C). Cell activity was assessed and expression of stress response genes (HSP70 and HSF1) and matrix remodeling genes (ACAN, COL2, COL1, ADAMTS4, MMP3 and MMP13) were studied. Results: Cell activity was maintained in all groups. Both NP and AF expressed high level of HSP70 in heat shock groups, confirming their expression in response to stress. In NP, expression of HSP70 was up-regulated after static loading and dynamic loading with higher fold change was observed after static loading. During repeated loading, HSP70 appeared to be upregulated right after loading and decreased after resting. Such trend was not observed in AF and HSF1 levels. Expressions of matrix remodeling genes did not change significantly with loading except ADAMTS4 decreased in AF during static loading. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that NP cells upregulate expression of HSP70 in response to loading induced stress without changing cell activity and matrix remodeling significantly. Increased plasma fibrinogen levels are associated with shortened overall survival (OS) in some solid tumor types. In contrast, the prognostic significance of varying fibrinogen levels in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at diagnosis is unknown. In this study, we assessed the prognostic significance of fibrinogen levels in AML patients. In a comprehensive retrospective single-center study, we determined the survival rates of 375 consecutive AML patients undergoing at least one cycle of intensive chemotherapy induction treatment. Patients were dichotomized between low (<4.1 g/L) and high fibrinogen levels (≥4.1 g/L) at diagnosis of AML before initiation of treatment. Subsequently, quartile ranges were applied to analyze the association of varying fibrinogen levels on survival. We observed that the rates of complete remission, early death, and admission to intensive care unit were equal in the low versus high fibrinogen group. However, OS was significantly better in the low fibrinogen group (27.3 vs 13.5 months; p = 0.0009) as well as progression-free survival (12.3 vs 7.8 months; p = 0.0076). This survival difference remained significant in the multivariate analysis (p = 0.003). Assessing quartiles of fibrinogen values, we further confirmed this observation. Our data suggest that high fibrinogen levels at diagnosis of AML are associated with unfavorable OS and progression-free survival but not with increased mortality during induction treatment.

The present data publication provides permanent links to original and updated versions of validated data files. The data files include properties of seawater, particulate matter and dissolved matter that were measured from discrete water samples collected with Niskin bottles during the 2009-2013 Tara Oceans expedition. Properties include pigment concentrations from HPLC analysis (10 depths per vertical profile, 25 pigments per depth), the carbonate system (Surface and 400m; pH (total scale), CO2, pCO2, fCO2, HCO3, CO3, Total alkalinity, Total carbon, OmegaAragonite, OmegaCalcite, and dosage Flags), nutrients (10 depths per vertical profile; NO2, PO4, N02/NO3, SI, quality Flags), DOC, CDOM, and dissolved oxygen isotopes. The Service National d'Analyse des Paramètres Océaniques du CO2, at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, determined CT and AT potentiometrically (Edmond 1970; DOE 1994) on samples preserved according to Dickson et al. (2007). More than 250 vertical profiles of these properties were made across the world ocean. DOC, CDOM and dissolved oxygen isotopes are available only for the Arctic Ocean and Arctic Seas (2013).

The present data publication provides permanent links to original and updated versions of validated data files. The data files include properties of seawater, particulate matter and dissolved matter from physical, optical and imaging sensors mounted on a vertical sampling system (Rosette) used during the 2009-2013 tara Oceans Expedition. It comprised 2 pairs of conductivity and temperature sensors (SEABIRD components), and a complete set of WEtLabs optical sensors, including chrorophyll and CDOM fluorometers, a 25 cm transmissiometer, and a one-wavelength backscatter meter. In addition, a SATLANTIC ISUS nitrate sensor and a Hydroptic Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP) were mounted on the rosette. In the Arctic Ocean and Arctic Seas (2013), a second oxygen sensor (SBE43) and a four frequency Aquascat acoustic profiler were added. The system was powered on specific Li-Ion batteries and data were self-recorded at 24HZ. Sensors have all been factory calibrated before, during and after the four year program. Oxygen was validated using climatologies (WOA09). Nitrate and Fluorescence data were adjusted with discrete measurements from Niskin bottles mounted on the Rosette, and optical darks were performed monthly on board. A total of 839 quality checked vertical profiles were made during the tara Oceans expedition 2009-2013.
