The determination of radiolarite ages of supraophiolitic rocks date the expansion age of oceanic crust. Radiolarites from the Gets nappe, a decollement cover nappe, provide the means of dating selected localities of outcropping oceanic crust based on their radiolarian faunas. Some studied samples from the ophiolitic melange (Perri re series) have a very well preserved and highly diverse radiolarian fauna of biochronological significance. The age of the radiolarites is established by correlation with the biozonation of Baumgartner et al. (1995b), which indicates a Bathonian age for the oldest radiolarian assemblages. Accordingly, these radiolarites represent remains of the oldest sediments recorded after the opening of the Piemont-Ligurian Ocean. This age is in agreement with those recently established by isotopic methods (166 +/- 1 Ma U-Pb and 165.9 +/- 2.2 Ma Ar-40/Ar-39) in the associated gabbros from the ophiolitic melange. The isotopic age and paleontological results are important because they represent the oldest dating of the oceanic crust of the Piemont-Ligurian Ocean, proving a Late Bajocian-Early Bathonian age for the oceanization in the western Tethys. The systematic part presents a complete Bathonian radiolarian assemblage from two of the best preserved samples; the illustrated assemblage contains 180 species attributed to 66 genera (44 nassellarians, 22 spumellarians and 1 entactinarian). Twenty new species and three new genera (Helvetocapsa, Plicaforacapsa and Theocapsomella) are formally described.

It is well established that T cell-deficient nude and SCID mice can be reconstituted by i.v. injection of small numbers of purified peripheral CD4+ T cells; however, the requirements for expansion of the transferred T cells in such systems are not clear. We show here that blood and lymphoid organs of MHC class II-deficient mice (which selectively lack mature CD4+ T cells) cannot be reconstituted by transfer of purified splenic CD4+ T cells, whereas TCRalpha-deficient mice (which lack both CD4+ and CD8+ mature T cells) are readily reconstituted. The failure of CD4+ T cell reconstitution in MHC class II-deficient mice was not due to the presence of CD8+ T cells, since similar results were obtained in TCRalpha-MHC class II double-deficient mice. Consistent with most previous studies CD4+ T cells in reconstituted TCRalpha-deficient mice had a diverse TCR Vbeta repertoire and were predominantly of an activated/memory (CD44high) phenotype. Collectively our data demonstrate that the expansion of peripheral CD4+ T cells in a T cell-deficient host is dependent upon interactions of the TCR with MHC class II.

According to the Taylor principle a central bank should adjust the nominal interest rate by more than one-for-one in response to changes in current inflation. Most of the existing literature supports the view that by following this simple recommendation a central bank can avoid being a source of unnecessary fluctuations in economic activity. The present paper shows that this conclusion is not robust with respect to the modelling of capital accumulation. We use our insights to discuss the desirability of alternative interest rate rules. Our results suggest a reinterpretation of monetary policy under Volcker and Greenspan: The empirically plausible characterization of monetary policy can explain the stabilization of macroeconomic outcomes observed in the early eighties for the US economy. The Taylor principle in itself cannot.

We sought to analyze, from the perspective of professors and students, the reasons and consequences of the expansion of undergraduate courses in nursing, discussing the dilemmas and the contradictions confronting the labor market. It was a qualitative study with data obtained from focus groups, conducted in 18 undergraduate nursing courses in the state of Minas Gerais, during the period of February to October of 2011. The narratives were submitted to critical discourse analysis. The results indicated that the education of the nurse was permeated by insecurity as to the future integration into the labor market. The insecurity translates into dilemmas that referred to employability and the precariousness of the working conditions. In this context, employment in the family health strategy emerges as a mirage. One glimpses the need for a political agenda with the purpose of discussion about education, the labor market and the determinants of these processes.

In this paper we study the relevance of multiple kernel learning (MKL) for the automatic selection of time series inputs. Recently, MKL has gained great attention in the machine learning community due to its flexibility in modelling complex patterns and performing feature selection. In general, MKL constructs the kernel as a weighted linear combination of basis kernels, exploiting different sources of information. An efficient algorithm wrapping a Support Vector Regression model for optimizing the MKL weights, named SimpleMKL, is used for the analysis. In this sense, MKL performs feature selection by discarding inputs/kernels with low or null weights. The approach proposed is tested with simulated linear and nonlinear time series (AutoRegressive, Henon and Lorenz series).

Although many studies have been carried out to verify the involvement of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) in dystrophia myotonica (DM1) patients, the results remain controversial. The generation of DM1 transgenic mice displaying the human DM1 phenotype provides a useful tool to investigate the type and incidence of structural abnormalities in the PNS. In the present study, the morphological and morphometric analysis of semi-thin sections of sciatic and sural nerves, lumbar dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and lumbar spinal cords revealed that in DM1 transgenic mice carrying 300 CTG repeats, there is no change in the number and diameter of myelinated axons compared to wild type. Only a non-significant reduction in the percentage of thin myelinated axons was detected in electron micrographs of ultra-thin sciatic nerve sections. Analysis of the number of neurons did not reveal a loss in number of either sensory neurons in the lumbar DRG or motor neurons in the lumbar spinal cord in these DM1 mice. Furthermore, in hind limb muscle sections, stained with a neurofilament antibody and alpha-bungarotoxin, the intramuscular axon arborization appeared normal in DM1 mice and undistinguishable from that in wild-type mice. Moreover, in DM1 mice, there was no irregularity in the structure or an increase in the endplate area. Also statistical analysis did not show an increase in endplate density or in the concentration of acetylcholine receptors. Altogether, these results suggest that 300 CTG repeats are not sufficient to induce axonopathy, demyelination or neuronopathies in this transgenic mouse model.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To relate the managerial competencies required of nurses with the process of change experienced in the expansion of the Family Health Strategy (FHS). METHOD A qualitative research conducted in primary health care in a southern Brazilian city, through interviews with 32 managerial and clinical nurses. The interviews were processed by IRAMUTEQ software. The resulting classes were examined under five managerial competencies to promote change. RESULTS The four classes obtained from data were: the Family Health Strategy expansion process; confrontations and potentialities; mobilization for the change; innovations in medical and nursing consultations. The classes were related to one or more competencies. CONCLUSION The expansion of the Family Health Strategy requires managerial competencies of implementing and sustaining change, negotiating agreements and commitments, using power and influence ethically and effectively, sponsoring and selling new ideas, and encouraging and promoting innovation.

We present simple procedures for the prediction of a real valued sequence. The algorithms are based on a combinationof several simple predictors. We show that if the sequence is a realization of a bounded stationary and ergodic random process then the average of squared errors converges, almost surely, to that of the optimum, given by the Bayes predictor. We offer an analog result for the prediction of stationary gaussian processes.

Theorem 1 of Euler s paper of 1737 'Variae Observationes Circa Series Infinitas', states the astonishing result that the series of all unit fractions whose denominators are perfect powers of integers minus unity has sum one. Euler attributes the Theorem to Goldbach. The proof is one of those examples of misuse of divergent series to obtain correct results so frequent during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. We examine this proof closelyand, with the help of some insight provided by a modern (and completely dierent) proof of the Goldbach-Euler Theorem, we present a rational reconstruction in terms which could be considered rigorous by modern Weierstrassian standards. At the same time, with a few ideas borrowed from nonstandard analysis we see how the same reconstruction can be also be considered rigorous by modern Robinsonian standards. This last approach, though, is completely in tune with Goldbach and Euler s proof. We hope to convince the reader then how, a few simple ideas from nonstandard analysis, vindicate Euler's work.
