The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the application of allogenous bone at the maxillo-mandibular reconstructions for future rehabilitation with dental implants. The patients were submitted to reconstruction of maxilla, using allogeneic bone grafts, in 3 different techniques: onlay grafts for lateral ridge augmentation, onlay and particulate bone for sinus lift grafting, and particulate alone for sinus lift grafts. Clinical and radiographic control was done at the postoperative phase for at least 8 months, until the patient could be submitted to the installation of dental implants. The results showed success in the majority of the cases, and dental implants could be installed. This can be considered an excellent alternative when compared with the use of autogenous grafts; because handling is easier, there is a great amount of material available and a possibility of using local anesthesia, and consequently there is a reduction of patient morbidity. In previous research in Brazil, we found socioeconomic and gender differences in body mass and percent body fat, consistent with a model in which individuals in higher socioeconomic strata, especially women, could achieve a cultural ideal of body size and shape. In this article, using new data, we examine these processes more precisely using measures of cultural consonance. Cultural consonance refers to the degree to which individuals approximate, in their own beliefs and behaviors, the shared prototypes for belief and behavior encoded in cultural models. We have found higher cultural consonance in several domains to be associated with health outcomes. Furthermore, there tends to be a general consistency in cultural consonance across domains. Here we suggest that measures of body composition can be considered indicators of individuals` success in achieving cultural ideals of the body, and that cultural consonance in several domains will be associated with body composition. Using waist circumference as an outcome, smaller waist size was associated with higher cultural consonance in lifestyle (beta = -0.311, P < 0.01) and higher cultural consonance in the consumption of high prestige foods (beta = -0.260, P < 0.01) for women (n = 161), but not for men (n = 106), controlling for age, family income, tobacco use, and dietary intake of protein and carbohydrates. Similar results were obtained using the body mass index and weight as outcomes, while there were no associations with height. These results help to illuminate the cultural mediation of body composition.

This article presents data on the fortification of foods, necessary as an important public health approach for the success in reducing anemia. The use of food vehicles, iron salts and their costs, as well as recent work on iron fortification of foods in Brazil are reviewed. Recent research serves as a cornerstone for countries that attempt to implement permanent, long-lasting iron fortification programs aimed at the prevention of anemia considering cultural habits, type of iron salts and at-risk groups.

Objective: To determine whether basal levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and anti-mullerian hormone (AMH), antral follicle count (AFC), and the numbers of dominant follicles, oocytes, and mature oocytes retrieved after ovarian stimulation differed between infertile women with endometriosis and healthy women undergoing assisted reproduction techniques (ART). Method: Of 77 consecutive ART candidates, 27 were infertile and had endometriosis. A male factor caused the infertility of the other 50, who acted as controls. Results: The AMH and AFC levels were similar in the 2 groups. The FSH levels were higher (8.28 mIU/ML [range, 5.25-24.1 mIU/ML] vs 5.91 mIU/mL [range, 2.47-18.7 mIU/ML]; P<0.01) in the study group. And the numbers of retrieved (n = 5 [range, 0-12] vs n = 9 [range, 0-27]; P<0.05) and mature oocytes (n = 4 [range, 0-11] vs n = 5 [range, 0-16]; P<0.05) were less in the study group. Conclusion: Because AMH levels were unchanged, endometriosis seems not to damage the primordial pool of follicles and oocytes, but to lessen the quality of the ovarian response to the hCG injection. In this article five women explore (female) embodiment in academic work in current workplaces. In a week-long collective biography workshop they produced written memories of themselves in their various workplaces and memories of themselves as children and as students. These memories then became the texts out of which the analysis was generated. The authors examine the constitutive and seductive effects of neoliberal discourses and practices, and in particular, the assembling of academic bodies as particular kinds of working bodies. They use the concept of chiasma, or crossing over, to trouble some aspects of binary thinking about bodies and about the relations between bodies and discourses. They examine the way that we simultaneously resist and appropriate, and are seduced by and appropriated within, neoliberal discourses and practices.

The report was commissioned by the Department of Education, Science and Training to investigate the perceived efficacy of middle years programmes in all States and Territories in improving the quality of teaching, learning and student outcomes, especially in literacy and numeracy and for student members of particular target groups. These target groups included students from lower socio-economic communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, students with a language background other than English, rural and remote students, and students struggling with the transition from middle/upper primary to the junior secondary years. The project involved large scale national and international literature reviews on Australian and international middle years approaches as well as an analysis of key literacy and numeracy teaching and learning strategies being used. In the report, there is emergent evidence of the relative efficacy of a combination of explicit state policy, dedicated funding and curriculum and professional development frameworks that are focused on the improvement of classroom pedagogy in the middle years. The programs that evidenced the greatest current and potential value for target group students tended to have developed in state policy environments that encouraged a structural rather than adjunct approach to middle years innovations. The authors conclude that in order to translate the gains made into sustainable improvement of educational results in literacy and numeracy for target groups, there is a need for a second generation of middle years theorising, research, development and practice.

Objective. We compared the anesthetic efficacy of inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) plus buccal infiltration (BI) and IANB plus periodontal ligament (PDL) articaine injections in patients with irreversible pulpitis in the mandibular first molar. Study design. Fifty-seven volunteers, patients with irreversible pulpitis in the mandibular first molar admitted to the Department of Stomatology, Second Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University, randomly received conventional IANB, containing 1.7 mL 4% articaine/HCl with 1:100,000 epinephrine, plus either BI or PDL injections containing 0.4 mL articaine/HCl with 1: 100,000 epinephrine. The patients recorded the pain of the injections and endodontic access on a Heft-Parker visual analog scale (VAS). Results. According to the VAS scores, all patients experienced no or mild pain with BI and PDL injections after the application of IANB. Anesthetic success occurred in 81.48% for IANB plus BI (IANB/BI) compared with 83.33% for IANB plus PDL injection (IANB/PDL injection). None of the observed differences between the 2 groups was significant (P > .05). Conclusion. Both injection combinations resulted in high anesthetic success in patients with irreversible pulpitis in the mandibular first molar. For species that form multi-generational and territorial family groups, resource-rich areas are predicted to support family dynasties in which one genetic lineage continuously occupies an area and may even expand to occupy surrounding areas. Data from a long-term study of Tasmanian native hens (Gallinula mortierii) support this prediction. The reproductive success and dispersal patterns of 18 hen lineages were monitored for seven breeding seasons and over several generations. The founder group with the highest average territory quality produced the highest total number of fledged young and the highest number of fledged linear descendants, accounting for 24% of the combined reproductive output of these 18 lineages. In the space of 6 years, this single genetic lineage expanded from one territory to occupy 12 of the 47 territories present in the population. This rate of expansion was over four times the population average for the same period. A multivariate analysis revealed that the success of a genetic lineage depended only on the number of high-quality territories surrounding the founder group. These results further demonstrate the resource-dependent nature of reproductive success in this species, and also highlight the potential importance of family dynasties in other cooperative species with complex social dynamics and dispersal patterns.

Individuals in cooperatively breeding species face a complex set of decisions when they reach reproductive maturity. During an 8-year study, we examined the histories of 214 Tasmanian native hens (Gallinula mortierii) from hatching to examine the strategies they used to acquire breeding positions and the reproductive success they experienced in those breeding positions. Two-thirds of young delayed dispersal from their natal groups for at least a year. Ecological constraints were a partial cause of delayed dispersal; high-quality territories were rare and remained occupied due to high adult survivorship. There were also clear benefits of philopatry. Individuals that inherited breeding positions on their natal territories gained better quality positions and experienced higher reproductive success in their first breeding attempts than did individuals who dispersed to other groups. Multivariate analyses showed that the method of acquisition of breeding positions was the only factor significantly related to the quality of the breeding positions attained. Males were more likely to inherit breeding positions in their natal groups than were females. The compositions of individuals' natal groups had no effect on whether they inherited breeding positions or dispersed. In contrast, the compositions of groups did appear to affect whether other birds dispersed into them, with birds rarely moving into groups that contained breeders or nonbreeders of the same sex as the potential dispersers. Short-term removals of breeders confirmed this finding. These results suggest that both ecological constraints and benefits of philopatry explain delayed dispersal in this species.

We describe remarkable success in controlling dengue vectors, Aedes aegypti (L.) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse), in 6 communes with 11,675 households and 49,647 people in the northern provinces of Haiphong, Hung Yen, and Nam Dinh in Vietnam. The communes were selected for high-frequency use of large outdoor concrete tanks and wells. These were found to be the source of 49.6-98.4% of Ae. aegypti larvae, which were amenable to treatment with local Mesocyclops, mainly M. woutersi Van der Velde, M. aspericornis (Daday) and M. thermocyclopoides Harada. Knowledge, attitude, and practice surveys were performed to determine whether the communities viewed dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever as a serious health threat; to determine their knowledge of the etiology, attitudes, and practices regarding control methods including Mesocyclops; and to determine their receptivity to various information methods. On the basis of the knowledge, attitude, and practice data, the community-based dengue control program comprised a system of local leaders, health volunteer teachers, and schoolchildren, supported by health professionals. Recycling of discards for economic gain was enhanced, where appropriate, and this, plus 37 clean-up campaigns, removed small containers unsuitable for Mesocyclops treatment. A previously successful eradication at Phan Boi village (Hung Yen province) was extended to 7 other villages forming Di Su commune (1,750 households) in the current study. Complete control was also achieved in Nghia Hiep (Hung Yen province) and in Xuan Phong (Nam Dinh province); control efficacy was greater than or equal to 99.7% in the other 3 communes (Lac Vien in Haiphong, Nghia Dong, and Xuan Kien in Nam Dinh). Although tanks and wells were the key container types of Ae. aegypti productivity, discarded materials were the source of 51% of the standing crop of Ae. albopictus. Aedes albopictus larvae were eliminated from the 3 Nam Dinh communes, and 86-98% control was achieved in the other 3 communes. Variable dengue attack rates made the clinical and serological comparison of control and untreated communes problematic, but these data indicate that clinical surveillance by itself is inadequate to monitor dengue transmission.

O estudo teve como objetivo investigar as ações constituídas por uma escola pública de Ensino Fundamental para o envolvimento de alunos com deficiência e com transtornos globais do desenvolvimento no currículo escolar. Contou com as contribuições teóricas de Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Michel de Certeau e Philippe Meirieu para uma discussão sociológica, filosófica e pedagógica das situações desencadeadas pela pesquisa. No campo do currículo, aproximou-se das teorizações de Silva, Moreira, Apple e Sacristán, dentre outros, por serem teóricos que analisam o trabalho com o conhecimento no contexto escolar. Já no campo da Educação Especial, dialogou com as produções de pesquisadores que postulam pela ideia de que o processo de inclusão escolar pressupõe acesso à escola, bem como permanência e a garantia do direito de apropriação dos conhecimentos socialmente produzidos. Como aporte teórico-metodológico, apoiou-se nos pressupostos da pesquisa-ação colaborativo-crítica que advoga pela possibilidade de, por meio da pesquisa científica, produzir conhecimento sobre a realidade social, promover mudanças nas situações desafiadoras e envolver os sujeitos pesquisados em processos de formação continuada em contexto. O trabalho de pesquisa foi realizado em uma escola de Ensino Fundamental, pertencente à Rede Pública Municipal de Ensino de Vila Velha/ES, envolvendo professores, pedagogos, dirigente escolar, responsáveis pelos discentes e alunos matriculados do 1º ao 6º ano do Ensino Fundamental. O processo de produção de dados se efetivou no período de julho de 2010 a julho de 2011. O pesquisador esteve três vezes por semana no campo de pesquisa, participando das intervenções em sala de aula, dos espaços para planejamento e formação continuada e também de momentos informais na entrada, recreio e saída dos alunos. Para o desenvolvimento do estudo, trabalhou-se com três frentes correlacionadas: a observação participante e a escuta dos discursos produzidos por alunos, professores, equipe técnico-pedagógica e responsáveis pelos discentes sobre o envolvimento dos estudantes com indicativos à Educação Especial no currículo escolar; a constituição de espaços de formação continuada, tomando os dados produzidos na primeira etapa do estudo como elementos de sustentação da dinâmica formativa; o acompanhamento das ações praticadas pela escola para envolvimento das necessidades educacionais dos alunos com indicativos à Educação Especial no currículo escolar, a partir das reflexões desencadeadas nos espaços de formação continuada. Como resultados, a pesquisa aponta a necessidade de advogar pela constituição de currículos escolares mais abertos para contemplar as necessidades de aprendizagem de alunos com comprometimentos físicos, psíquicos, intelectuais ou sensoriais. Esta pesquisa se distancia de lógicas que defendem a flexibilização curricular como um esvaziamento do currículo em nome das condições existenciais dos alunos. Entende que, entre o currículo escolar e a produção de conhecimentos pelos alunos com indicativos à Educação Especial, há uma pluralidade de situações que precisam ser problematizadas pela escola: a leitura produzida sobre a aprendizagem dos alunos; a falta de conhecimento sobre a sexualidade humana; os desafios presentes na relação família e escola; e os pressupostos da normalidade/anormalidade. Esses fatores podem se configurar como elementos que impedem que os alunos obtenham sucesso em sua jornada educativa, porém, em contrapartida, podem ser utilizados como questões a subsidiar espaços de formação continuada. O estudo aponta que, por meio de atitudes colaborativas e críticas entre os profissionais da escola, é possível articular ações que garantam o direito de aprender do estudante com deficiência e com transtornos globais do desenvolvimento na escola de ensino comum.

It is known the power of ideas is tremendous. But there are employees in many companies who have good ideas but not put them into practice. On the other hand, there are many others who have good ideas and are encouraged to contribute their ideas for innovation in the company. This study attempts to identify factors that contribute to success in managing ideas and consequent business innovation. The method used was the case study applied to two companies. During the investigation, factors considered essential for the success of an idea management program were identified, of which we highlight, among others, evidences the results, involvement of the top management, establishment of goals and objectives; recognition; dissemination of good results. Companies with these implemented systems, capture the best ideas from their collaborators and apply them internally. This study intends to contribute to business innovation in enterprises through creation and idea management, mainly through collecting the best ideas of their own employees. The results of this study can be used to help improving deployed suggestions systems, as well as, all managers who wish to implement suggestions systems/ideas management systems.

A presente pesquisa faz uma análise sobre o reconhecimento da necessidade da Música na Escola, levando em consideração o caráter interdisciplinar, lúdico e as restantes propriedades da música, capazes de promover cada vez mais sinapses, fato este comprovado pela Neurociência, em que o aluno passa a estar mais motivado, através da constante e percetível ativação de diversas áreas cerebrais distintas das áreas específicas do tratamento da informação musical. O ponto de partida para esta pesquisa foi a Lei 11.769/08 do Governo Federal Brasileiro que trata da obrigatoriedade do ensino da música na educação básica, a partir deste momento, houve grandes perspetivas e projetos direcionados ao retorno da música à sala de aula, focalizando a atenção para a melhor organização dos espaços, nomeadamente, estruturas, materiais e pessoal, de forma a garantir o sucesso do ensino através da música. Tendo em conta a implementação desta lei, houve a necessidade de analisar na prática, os benefícios da música na aprendizagem, bem como a formação do docente para esta atividade. Deste modo, fez-se o enquadramento teórico com base nos conhecimentos já existentes sobre políticas educativas públicas e o ensino artístico, especificamente a presença da Música no currículo escolar. Este enquadramento serviu de base para a realização de um estudo no município de Coelho Neto no Maranhão – Brasil, com base na temática: ―A Importância da Música na Motivação do Aluno‖, que demonstrou a falta de preparação dos docentes no que concerne à música. Assim, esta investigação-ação levou-nos à elaboração do Projeto ―Formar para melhor ensinar‖, no sentido de ajudar os professores a superar esta lacuna. Este projeto será implementado no próximo ano letivo.

RESUMO:O desenvolvimento entendido como um processo político, económico e social, visando uma melhoria constante do bem-estar de toda a população, requer a alocação e utilização de recursos para benefício social e económico da sociedade. Porém, em Moçambique, neste processo, o crescimento e progressão dos grupos sociais ainda é desigual, ocorrendo uma certa marginalização e menor participação nos processos de tomada de decisão, das mulheres e dos grupos desfavorecidos. O presente estudo, subordinado ao tema: “A Questão do Género em Moçambique: Contributo para uma análise da sua problemática”, procurou compreender a importância e o contributo das mulheres moçambicanas inseridas em diferentes áreas de desenvolvimento e o seu empoderamento. O estudo foi centrado nas diversas formas de luta e de intervenção contra a pobreza e a exclusão social. A metodologia do presente trabalho consistiu numa pesquisa empírica através da observação participante, onde foram feitas entrevistas, utilizando guiões pré-elaborados que permitiram recolher os perfis sociológicos das ONGs que trabalham directamente com as questões de género. Foram entrevistadas mulheres que ocupam lugares-chave nas instituições governamentais e algumas parlamentares. Foi igualmente consultada a documentação oficial bem como os dados estatísticos que abordam questões ligadas ao género. As observações feitas indicam-nos que a mulher em Moçambique busca gradualmente o seu espaço no desenvolvimento da sociedade, não se esgotando a sua participação apenas nos processos decisórios a nível governamental e das ONGs, antes estendendo-se ao associativismo nos mais diversos campos sociais. A mulher moçambicana participa hoje, individualmente ou organizada em grupo, em lutas e reivindicações colectivas, tendo crescido positivamente ao conseguir ultrapassar diversos obstáculos. A título de conclusão recomenda-se a inclusão de profissionais da área social nos programas de desenvolvimento. Seria uma forma de fortalecer os avanços já alcançados. A presença de assistentes sociais nos órgãos públicos e noutros sectores mais sensíveis, iria por certo permitir reduzir as preocupações dos que buscam estes serviços. ABSTRACT: The present study on the subject: “The Question of Gender in Mozambique: Development and Issues”, demand to understand the importance and contribution that non-governmental organizations provides on the effort of Mozambican woman in having in the society the space that on right belongs to her. The development understood as the economic, social, cultural and political process that aimed a continuous improvement of the population welfare, require the allocation and use of resources for social and economic benefit of society. However in many countries, as is the case of Mozambique, this process is the advancement of certain groups accompanied by the marginalization, exclusion and subordination of others, especially women. Despite improvement in education and combating poverty, access to education for women remains an unusual reality and poverty persists to affect much of Mozambican women, thus causing its social exclusion. On the other hand, although the law recognizes gender equality, women are still oppressed and often the only career that is destined is to be married, take care of the field and having children. However, several exceptions have occurred in which women have to take political positions and functions exclusively reserved to men before. Women's organizations and women leaders participating in favour of the defence of other women have been contributing to its success. Maonyo yaliyofanywa yanatuonyesha ya kwamba mwanamke katika Mozambika anatafuta kidogo kidogo nafasi yake maendeleoni ya watu jamii, asipojichosha tu kwa kushirika katika taratibu za kubezwa za serikali za “ONGs” na ushirikiano, ukijitanda kwa maeneo ya jamii makubwa zaidi. Mwanamke wa Mozambiki anashirika peke au kwa kundi, akiunganika mapiganoni na madaini ya pamoja, akigua na akiweza kupita vizuizi vingi. Inashauriwa kwamba kama namna ya kuimarisha maendeleo na kwa sababu mwanamke yuko katika sehemu nyingi za jamii, anaingia ndani ya sekta mbalimbali za ufundi kama kwa mfano msaidizi wa jamii. Kuwapo kwa msaidizi wa jamii katika mashirika ya umma na katika sekta nyingine mbalimbali kutaruhusu kumaliza shughuliko ya wale ambao wanatafuta kazi hizi.
