The objective of this paper is to propose a numerically integrated modified virtual crack closure integral (NI-MVCCI) technique for fracture analysis of cracked plate panels. NI-MVCCI technique is generalized one and the expressions for computing the strain energy release rate (SERR) are independent of the finite element employed. NI-MVCCI technique has been demonstrated for 4-noded, 8-noded (regular and quarter-point) and 9-noded isoparametric finite elements. Numerical studies on fracture analysis of 2-D crack (mode-I and mode-II) problems have been conducted employing these elements. SERR and stress intensity factors (SIF) have been computed for these problems and found to be in good agreement with the respective analytical solutions available in the literature. The appropriate Gauss numerical integration order to be employed for each of these elements for accurate computation of SERR and SIF has been recommended based on the studies.

Nanostructured TiO2 is one of the most commonly used materials in photocatalytic applications and photochemical solar cells. This article describes a method to synthesize nanoporous anatase TiO2 membranes directly on stainless steel (SS), an easily available substrate by anodization to form amorphous TiO2 and a subsequent heat treatment to convert it into anatase, the photoactive phase. To obtain adherent membranes with interfaces that are resistant to peeling, both anodization and heat treatment parameters need to be optimized to obtain a heterostructure that contains a Ti film between the TiO2 membrane and the substrate.

In this paper, the well-known Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) is modified to solve the fracture laminated multi-directional problems. The results are compared with the existing analytical/exact or experimental method. The already known existing ADM is modified to improve the accuracy and convergence. Thus, the modified method is named as Modified Adomian Decomposition Method (MADM). The results fromMADM are found to converge very quickly, simple to apply for fracture(singularity) problems and are more accurate compared to experimental and analytical methods. MADM is quite efficient and is practically well-suited for use in these problems. Several examples are given to check the reliability of the present method. In the present paper, the principle of the decomposition method is described, and its advantages form the analyses of fracture of laminated uni-directional composites.

This article presents the deformation behavior of high-strength pearlitic steel deformed by triaxial compression to achieve ultra-fine ferrite grain size with fragmented cementite. The consequent evolution of microstructure and texture has been studied using scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scatter diffraction, and X-ray diffraction. The synergistic effect of diffusion and deformation leads to the uniform dissolution of cementite at higher temperature. At lower temperature, significant grain refinement of ferrite phase occurs by deformation and exhibits a characteristic deformation texture. In contrast, the high-temperature deformed sample shows a weaker texture with cube component for the ferrite phase, indicating the occurrence of recrystallization. The different mechanisms responsible for the refinement of ferrite as well as the fragmentation of cementite and their interaction with each other have been analyzed. Viscoplastic self-consistent simulation was employed to understand deformation texture in the ferrite phase during triaxial compression.

There is a research knowledge gap for the dry wear data of nitride treated Stainless Steel in high temperature and high vacuum environment. In order to fill this gap, plasma nitriding was done on austenitic Stainless Steel type AISI 316LN (316LN SS) and dry sliding wear tests have been conducted at 25 degrees C, 200 degrees C and 400 degrees C in high vacuum of 1.6 x 10(-4) bar. The two different slider material (316LN SS and Colmonoy) and two different sliding speeds (0.0576 m/s and 0.167 m/s) have been used. The tribological parameters such as friction coefficient, wear mechanism and volume of metal loss have been evaluated. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface morphology of the worn pins and rings. Electronic balancing machine was used to record the mass of metal loss during wear tests. The 2D optical profilometer was used to measure the depth of the wear track. The Plasma Nitride treated 316LN SS rings (PN rings) exhibit excellent wear resistance against 316LN SS pin and Colmonoy pin at all temperatures. However, PN ring vs. Colmonoy pin Pair shows better wear resistance than PN ring vs. 316LN SS pin Pair at higher temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, severe plastic deformation (SPD) of Ti-bearing interstitial-free steel was carried out by multi-axial forging (MAF) technique. The grain refinement achieved was comparable to that by other SPD techniques. A considerable heterogeneity was observed in the microstructure and texture. Texture of multi-axially forged steels has been evaluated and reported for the first time. The material exhibited a six-fold increase in the yield strength after four cycles of MAF.

The concentration of a nonionic surfactant and water pH were varied in an oil-in-water emulsion to minimize the friction coefficient between a steel ball sliding on a steel flat. At a surfactant concentration near the CMC (critical micelle concentration) the oil droplet size was found to be minimum. In this paper we study the microstructure of the surfactant molecules self-assembled on the steel substrate in water to comment on the ability of the surfactant aggregate to attract and retain oil. We find that a near semicylindrical hemimiceller microstructure with hydrocarbon tails projecting into bulk water as obtained at CMC in near neutral water is best able to capture and retain oil in yielding a low coefficient of friction.

A steel ball was slid on a steel flat lubricated by molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) particles suspended in hexadecane oil at 150 degrees C. The friction data is compared with that obtained when the ball was slid on the flat sprayed apriori with nominally dry MoS2 particles. The friction in the dry experiment was found to increase with temperature while the friction in wet condition was found to decrease with increasing temperature. Micro-Raman and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy are used to explore the roles of environmental moisture and chemical degradation of oil on the formation of antifriction film on the steel substrate.

A novel method is proposed for fracture toughness determination of graded microstructurally complex (Pt,Ni)Al bond coats using edge-notched doubly clamped beams subjected to bending. Micron-scale beams are machined using the focused ion beam and loaded in bending under a nanoindenter. Failure loads gathered from the pop-ins in the load-displacement curves combined with XFEM analysis are used to calculate K-c at individual zones, free from substrate effects. The testing technique and sources of errors in measurement are described and possible micromechanisms of fracture in such heterogeneous coatings discussed.

In this work, Plasma Nitriding was carried out at a temperature of 570 degrees C on nuclear grade austenitic stainless steel type AISI 316 LN (316LN SS) in a gas mixture of 20% N-2-80% H-2 to improve the surface hardness and thereby sliding wear resistance. The Plasma Nitride (PN) treated surface has been characterized by Vickers microhardness measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) examination, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and sliding wear assessment. The average thickness of the PN layer was found to be 70 mu m. Microhardness measurements showed a significant increase in the hardness from 210 HV25g (unnitrided sample) to 1040 HV25g (Plasma Nitrided sample). The XRD reveals that PN layer consists of CrN, Fe4N and Fe3N phases along with austenite phase. The tribological parameters such as the friction coefficient and wear mechanism have been evaluated at ambient conditions for PN treated ring (PN ring) vs. ASTM A453 grade 660 pin (ASTM pin), PN ring vs. Nickel based alloy hard faced pin (Colmonoy pin), PN ring vs. 316LN SS pin and 316LN SS ring vs. 316LN SS pin. The wear tracks have been analyzed by SEM, Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX) and Optical Profilometry. The untreated 316LN SS ring vs. 316LN SS pin produced severe wear and was characterized by a combination of delamination and adhesion wear mechanism, whereas wear mechanism of the PN rings reveals mild abrasion and a transfer layer from pin materials. This paper presents the details of nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of three point bending specimens made up of high strength concrete (HSC, HSC1) and ultra high strength concrete (UHSC). Brief details about characterization and experimentation of HSC, HSC1 and UHSC have been provided. Cracking strength criterion has been used for simulation of crack propagation by conducting nonlinear FEA. The description about FEA using crack strength criterion has been outlined. Bi-linear tension softening relation has been used for modeling the cohesive stresses ahead of the crack tip. Numerical studies have been carried out on fracture analysis of three point bending specimens. It is observed from the studies that the computed values from FEA are in very good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. The computed values of stress vs crack width will be useful for evaluation of fracture energy, crack tip opening displacement and fracture toughness. Further, these values can also be used for crack growth study, remaining life assessment and residual strength evaluation of concrete structural components.

In an effort to study the role of strain rate response on the tribological behavior of metals, room temperature experiments were conducted by sliding commercially pure titanium and a-iron pins against an H-11 die steel flats of various surface textures. The steel flat surface textures were specifically prepared to allow for imposing varying amounts of strain rates at the contacting interface during sliding motion. In the experiments, it was observed that titanium (a harder material than iron) formed a transfer layer on H-11 steel surface textures that produced higher strain rates. In contrast, the titanium pins abraded the steel surfaces that produced lower strain rates. The iron pins were found to abrade the H-11 steel surface regardless of the surface texture characteristics. This unique tribological behavior of titanium is likely due to the fact that titanium undergoes adiabatic shear banding at high strain rates, which creates pathways for lower resistance shear planes. These shear planes lead to fracture and transfer layer formation on the surface of the steel flat, which ultimately promotes a higher strain rate of deformation at the asperity level. Iron does not undergo adiabatic shear banding and thus more naturally abrades the surfaces. Overall, the results clear indicated that a materials strain rate response can be an important factor in controlling the tribological behavior of a plastically deforming material at the asperity level. Solid lubricant nanoparticles in suspension in oil are good lubricating options for practical machinery. In this article, we select a range of dispersants, based on their polar moieties, to suspend 50-nm molybdenum disulfide particles in an industrial base oil. The suspension is used to lubricate a steel on steel sliding contact. A nitrogen-based polymeric dispersant (aminopropyl trimethoxy silane) with a free amine group and an oxygen-based polymeric dispersant (sorbital monooleate) when grafted on the particle charge the particle negatively and yield an agglomerate size which is almost the same as that of the original particle. Lubrication of the contact by these suspensions gives a coefficient of friction in the similar to 0.03 range. The grafting of these surfactants on the particle is shown here to be of a chemical nature and strong as the grafts survive mechanical shear stress in tribology. Such grafts are superior to those of other silane-based test surfactants which have weak functional groups. In the latter case, the particles bereft of strong grafts agglomerate easily in the lubricant and give a coefficient of friction in the 0.08-0.12 range. This article investigates the mechanism of frictional energy dissipation as influenced by the chemistry of the surfactant molecule.

This paper presents the advanced analytical methodologies such as Double- G and Double - K models for fracture analysis of concrete specimens made up of high strength concrete (HSC, HSC1) and ultra high strength concrete. Brief details about characterization and experimentation of HSC, HSC1 and UHSC have been provided. Double-G model is based on energy concept and couples the Griffith's brittle fracture theory with the bridging softening property of concrete. The double-K fracture model is based on stress intensity factor approach. Various fracture parameters such as cohesive fracture toughness (4), unstable fracture toughness (K-Ic(c)), unstable fracture toughness (K-Ic(un)) and initiation fracture toughness (K-Ic(ini)) have been evaluated based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and nonlinear fracture mechanics principles. Double-G and double-K method uses the secant compliance at the peak point of measured P-CMOD curves for determining the effective crack length. Bi-linear tension softening model has been employed to account for cohesive stresses ahead of the crack tip. From the studies, it is observed that the fracture parameters obtained by using double - G and double - K models are in good agreement with each other. Crack extension resistance has been estimated by using the fracture parameters obtained through double - K model. It is observed that the values of the crack extension resistance at the critical unstable point are almost equal to the values of the unstable fracture toughness K-Ic(un) of the materials. The computed fracture parameters will be useful for crack growth study, remaining life and residual strength evaluation of concrete structural components.
