In the present work we use a plasma jet system with a hollow cathode to deposit thin TiO2 films on silicon substrates as alternative at sol-gel, PECVD, dip-coating e magnetron sputtering techniques. The cylindrical cathode, made from pure titanium, can be negatively polarized between 0 e 1200 V and supports an electrical current of up to 1 A. An Ar/O2 mixture, with a total flux of 20 sccm and an O2 percentage ranging between 0 and 30%, is passed through a cylindrical hole machined in the cathode. The plasma parameters and your influence on the properties of deposited TiO2 films and their deposition rate was studied. When discharge occurs, titanium atoms are sputtered/evaporated. They are transported by the jet and deposited on the Si substrates located on the substrate holder facing the plasma jet system at a distance ranging between10 and 50 mm from the cathode. The working pressure was 10-3 mbar and the deposition time was 10 -60 min. Deposited films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to check the film uniformity and morphology and by X-ray diffraction to analyze qualitatively the phases present. Also it is presented the new dispositive denominate ionizing cage, derived from the active screen plasma nitriding (ASPN), but based in hollow cathode effect, recently developed. In this process, the sample was involved in a cage, in which the cathodic potential was applied. The samples were placed on an insulator substrate holder, remaining in a floating potential, and then it was treated in reactive plasma in hollow cathode regime. Moreover, the edge effect was completely eliminated, since the plasma was formed on the cage and not directly onto the samples and uniformity layer was getting in all sampl

In this work we proposed a relative humidity (RH) sensor based on a Bragg grating written in an optical fiber, associated with a coating of organo-silica hybrid material prepared by the sol-gel method. The organo-silica-based coating has a strong adhesion to the optical fiber and its expansion is reversibly affected by the change in the RH values (15.0-95.0%) of the surrounding environment, allowing an increased sensitivity (22.2 pm/%RH) and durability due to the presence of a siliceous-based inorganic component. The developed sensor was tested in a real structure health monitoring essay, in which the RH inside two concrete blocks with different porosity values was measured over 1 year. The results demonstrated the potential of the proposed optical sensor in the monitoring of civil engineering structures.

These films were obtained by dip coating. Parameters like dislocation velocity; number of deposits, suspension concentration, and number of deposits followed or not by heat treatment between each deposit and calcination temperature were evaluated for establishing the best homogeneity. The obtained films were characterized in terms of their morphology, optical quality and photoluminescence by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis absorption spectrophotometry and luminescence spectroscopy, respectively. The morphologic and luminescent characteristics showed dip coating as good laboratory technique for development of thin films for optical applications.

SnO2 thin films were obtained by the sol-gel method starting from inorganic precursor solutions. In this work, we compare the structure of undoped and Sb-doped SnO2 films prepared by dip-coating. The films were deposited on quartz substrates and then fired at different temperatures ranging from 383 up to 1173 K. The density and the thickness of the films were determined by X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and their porous nanostructure was characterized by grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). XRR results corresponding to undoped and Sb-doped samples indicate a monotonous decrease in film thickness when they are fired at increasing temperatures. At same time, the apparent density of undoped samples exhibits a progressive increase while for Sb-doped films it remains invariant up to 973 K and then increases for T = 1173 K. Anisotropic GISAXS patterns of both films, Sb-doped and undoped, fired above 573 K indicate the presence of elongated pores with their major axis perpendicular to the film surface. For all firing temperatures the nanopores in doped samples are larger than in undoped ones. This suggests that Sb-doping favours the pore growth hindering the film densification. At the highest firing temperature (1173 K) this effect is reversed.

Strontium titanate (SrTiO3) thin films were prepared by dip-coating Si(111) single-crystal substrates in citrate solutions of ethylene glycol, considering several citric acid/ethylene glycol (CA/EG) ratios. Measurements of intrinsic viscosity indicate that increasing the amount of EG increases the precursors' polymeric chains and increases the weight loss. After deposition the substrates were dried on a hotplate (approximate to 150 degrees C); this was followed by heat treatment at temperatures ranging from 500 to 700 degrees C using heating and cooling rates of 1 degrees C min(-1). SEM and optical microscopy investigations of the sintered films obtained from different CA/EG ratios indicate that there is a critical thickness above which the films present cracks. This critical thickness for SrTiO3 films deposited on the Si(111) substrate is about 150 nm, Measurements of crack spacing as a function of film thickness indicate that the origin of cracks cannot be explained by the elastic behavior of the film but rather by the viscoelastic relaxation of the film during pyrolysis and sintering. Monodisperse spheres of silica and latex were obtained by a surfactant free styrene polimerization and the Stober method respectively. Controlling settling either by centrifugation or by dip-coating colloidal crystals could be obtained. Silica inverse opals were prepared by using the latex colloidal crystals as templates and TEOS/ethanol solution. Eu3+ containing silica spheres were obtained dispersing silica spheres in Eu(NO3)(3) isopropanol solutions. Emission spectra suggest the formation of an amorphous Eu3+ containing phase well adhered at the spheres surface. The utilization of solutions of trifluoroacetates salts of Pb2+ and Eu3+ was observed to destroy the silica spherical pattern when samples are treated at 1000degreesC. In that case nanocrystals of PbF2 and amorphous silica were obtained after heat treatment.

Eu3+ -doped titania-silica planar waveguides were prepared from tetraethylorthotitanate (TEOT) and modified silane 3-amino-propyltriethoxysilane (APTS). Films were deposited on borosilicate glass substrates by a dip-coating technique. The refractive index, the thickness and the total attenuation coefficient of the waveguides were measured at 632.8 and 1550 nm by prism coupling technique. Starting from pure titania films, the addition of modified silane leads to a decrease in the refractive index and an increase in thickness. Squared electric field simulation has shown that the light confinement in the waveguide increases with the silane content of the so]. Emission spectra present a broad emission band due to the modified silane and EU emission transitions arising mainly from the D-5(0) level to the F-7(J) (J = 0-4) manifolds. The dependence of transition intensities and excited state lifetimes on the initial composition and also on the heat treatment performed was interpreted in terms of structural changes occurring during the preparation process. Polymeric precursor solution was used to deposit LiNbO3 thin films by dip coating on sapphire substrates. The effects of processing variables, such as heat treatment conditions and number of deposited layers, on crystallinity and morphology of the final films were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns show the oriented growth of the films. The rocking curves, obtained around the (006) LiNbO3 peak, revealed that the shape peak and the FWHM value were influenced by the processing variables. According to these parameters, some films presented very homogeneous dense and smooth surfaces, as shown by the SEM and AFM studies.

SiO2 (1-x) - TiO2 (x) waveguides, with the mole fraction x in the range 0.07 - 0.20 and thickness of about 0.4 μm, were deposited on silica substrates by a dip-coating technique. The thermal treatments at 700-900°C, used to fully densify the xerogels, produce nucleation of TiO2 nanocrystals even for the lowest TiO2 content. The nucleation of TiO2 nanocrystals and their growth by thermal annealing up to 1300°C were studied by waveguide Raman spectroscopy, for the SiO2 (0.8) - TiO2 (0.2) composition. By increasing the annealing temperature, the Raman spectrum evolves from that typical of the silica-titania glass to that of anatase, but brookite phase is dominant at intermediate temperatures. In the low. frequency region (5-50 cm-1) of the Raman spectra, acoustic vibrations of the nanocrystals are observed. From the measured line shapes, we can deduce the size distribution of the particles. The results are compared with those obtained from the line widths in the X-ray diffraction patterns. Nanocrystals with a mean size in the range 4-20 nm are obtained, by thermal annealing in a corresponding range of 800-1300°C.

A comparative study was accomplished between two immobilization methodologies for the meldola's blue (MB), used to decrease the oxidation potential of NADH. The study was performed with glassy carbon electrode by electropolymerization of pyrrole and MB through the technique of cyclic voltammetry being evaluated the effect of the number of cycles to define the thickness and the stability of the film. With 25 cycles it was obtained the best result. They were also investigated the modification of the graphite electrode with film formed by the system sol-gel PPO 300 or PPO 4000 for the dip-coating, through two methods: occlusion and adsorption. The best method was it of adsorption of MB during 10 min, following by deposit of the film PPO 300, favored for the time of drying (24 hours). The adsorption of MB followed by PPO 300 deposition presented broader linear range than PPy methodology. ©2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

Pure and scandium doped-TiO2 thin films were prepared by the sol-gel process and coated by dip coating. The effects of scandium on the phase formation, optical properties and photoactivity of the TiO2 thin films were investigated. The lattice parameters and the crystallinity of the anatase phase, characterized by the Rietveld method, demonstrated that scandium doping affected the structural parameters and crystallinity of the films, modifying the absorption edge. A direct correlation was found between band gap energy and photodegradation efficiency, with lower values of band gap energy augmenting this efficiency. Moreover, a significant improvement in the catalyst's photodegradation efficiency was attained with a scandium concentration of 5.0 mol%. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
