This paper presents a novel approach for introducing aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at the crack interface of pre-impregnated (prepreg) carbon fibre composite plies, creating a hierarchical (three-phase) composite structure. The aim of this approach is to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness. The developed method for transplanting the aligned CNTs from the silicon wafer onto the pre-preg material is described. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyse the effects of the transplantation method. Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) specimens were prepared, according to ASTM standard D5528- 01R07E03 [1] and aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were introduced at the crack-tip. Mode I fracture tests for pristine (control) specimens and CNT-enhanced specimens were conducted and an average increase in the critical strain energy release rate (GIc) of approximately 50 % was achieved.

Multiscale micro-mechanics theory is extensively used for the prediction of the material response and damage analysis of unidirectional lamina using a representative volume element (RVE). Th is paper presents a RVE-based approach to characterize the materi al response of a multi-fibre cross-ply laminate considering the effect of matrix damage and fibre-matrix interfacial strength. The framework of the homogenization theory for periodic media has been used for the analysis of a 'multi-fibre multi-layer representative volume element' (M2 RVE) representing cross-ply laminate. The non-homogeneous stress-strain fields within the M2RVE are related to the average stresses and strains by using Gauss theorem and the Hill-Mandal strain energy equivalence principle. The interfacial bonding strength affects the in-plane shear stress-strain response significantl y. The material response predicted by M2 RVE is in good agreement with the experimental results available in the literature. The maximum difference between the shear stress predicted using M2 RVE and the experimental results is ~15% for the bonding strength of 30MPa at the strain value of 1.1%

A novel approach for introducing aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in a carbon-fibre composite pre-impregnated (prepreg) laminate, to improve the through-thickness fracture toughness, is presented. Carbon nanotube (CNT) 'forests' were grown on a silicon substrate with a thermal oxide layer, using a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process. The forests were then transferred to a pre-cured laminate interface, using a combination of pressure and heat, while maintaining through-thickness CNT alignment. Standard Mode I and four-point bend end-notched flexure Mode II tests were undertaken on a set of specimens and compared with pristine specimens. Mode I fracture toughness for T700/M21 laminates was improved by an average of 31% while for T700/SE84LV specimens, an improvement of 61% was observed. Only T700/M21 specimens were tested in Mode II which yielded an average fracture toughness improvement of 161%. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed good wetting of the CNT forest as well as evidence of penetration of the forest into the adjacent plies. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Fibre-Reinforced Plastics (FRPs) have been used in civil aerospace vehicles for decades. The current state-of-the-art in airframe design and manufacture results in approximately half the airframe mass attributable to FRP materials. The continual increase in the use of FRP materials over metallic alloys is attributable to the material's superior specific strength and stiffness, fatigue performance and corrosion resistance. However, the full potential of these materials has yet to be exploited as analysis methods to predict physical failure with equal accuracy and robustness are not yet available. The result is a conservative approach to design, but one that can bring benefit via increased inspection intervals and reduced cost over the vehicle life. The challenge is that the methods used in practice are based on empirical tests and real relationships and drivers are difficult to see in this complex process and so the trade-off decision is challenging and uncertain. The aim of this feasibility study was to scope a viable process which could help develop some rules and relationships based on the fundamental mechanics of composite material and the economics of production and operation, which would enhance understanding of the role and impact of design allowables across the life of a composite structure.

A robust finite element scheme for the micro-mechanical modeling of the behavior of fiber reinforced polymeric composites under external loads is developed. The developed model is used to simulate stress distribution throughout the composite domain and to identify the locations where maximum stress concentrations occur. This information is used as a guide to predict dominant failure and crack growth mechanisms in fiber reinforced composites. The differences between continuous fibers, which are susceptible to unidirectional transverse fracture, and short fibers have been demonstrated. To assess the validity and range of applicability of the developed scheme, numerical results obtained by the model are compared with the available experimental data and also with the values found using other methods reported in the literature. These comparisons show that the present finite element scheme can generate meaningful results in the analysis of fiber reinforced composites.

This investigation aims to characterise the damping properties of the nonwoven materials with potential applications in automotive and aerospace industry. Nonwovens are a popular choice for many applications due to their relatively low manufacturing cost and unique properties. It is known that nonwovens are efficient energy dispersers for certain applications such as acoustic damping and ballistic impact. It is anticipated that these energy absorption properties could eventually be used to provide damping for mechanical vibrations. However the behaviour of nonwovens under dynamic load and vibration has not been investigated before. Therefore we intend to highlight these aspects of the behaviour of the nonwovens through this research. In order to obtain an insight to the energy absorption properties of the nonwoven fabrics, a range of tests has been performed. Forced vibration of the cantilever beam is used to explore damping over a range of resonance modes and input amplitudes. The tests are conducted on aramid, glass fibre and polyester fabrics with a range of area densities and various coatings. The tests clarified the general dynamic behaviour of the fabrics tested and the possible response in more real application condition as well. The energy absorption in both thickness and plane of the fabric is tested. The effects of the area density on the results are identified. The main absorption mechanism is known to be the friction. The frictional properties are improved by using a smaller fibre denier and increasing fibre length, this is a result of increasing contact surface between fibres. It is expected the increased friction result in improving damping. The results indicate different mechanism of damping for fiber glass fabrics compared to the aramid fabrics. The frequency of maximum efficiency of damping is identified for the fabrics tested. These can be used to recommend potential applications.

The mechanical behavior of microfibrilar composites (MFC), consisting of a matrix of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and reinforcement of polyamide 6 (PA6) fibrils, with and without compatibilization, was studied. The composites were produced by conventional processing techniques with various shape and arrangement of the PA6 reinforcing entities: long, unidirectional, or crossed bundles of fibrils (UDP and CPC, respectively), middle-length, randomly oriented bristles (MRB), or non-oriented micrometric PA6 spheres (NOM). The tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the MFC materials (UDP, CPC, and MRB) were determined as a function of the PA6 reinforcement shape, alignment and content, and compared with those of NOM, the non-fibrous composite. It was concluded that the in-situ MFC materials based on HDPE/PA6 blends display improvements in the mechanical behavior when compared with the neat HDPE matrix, e.g., up to 33% for the Young modulus, up to 119% for the ultimate tensile strength, and up to 80% for the flexural stiffness. Improvements in the structural performance of glulam timber beams by the inclusion of reinforcing materials can improve both the service performance and ultimate capacity. In recent years research focusing on the addition of fibre reinforced polymers to strengthen members has yielded positive results. However, the FRP material is still a relatively expensive material and its full potential has not been realised in combination with structural timber. This paper describes a series of four-point bending tests that were conducted, under service and ultimate loads, on post-tensioned glulam timber beams where the reinforcing tendon used was 12 mm diameter Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer (BFRP). The research was designed to evaluate the additional benefits of including an active type of reinforcement, by post-tensioning the BFRP tendon, as opposed to the passive approach of simply reinforcing the timber beam.
From the laboratory investigations, it was established that there was a 16% increase in load carrying capacity, in addition to a 14% reduction in deflection under service loads when members containing the post-tensioned BFRP composite are compared with control timber specimens. Additionally a more favourable ductile failure mode was witnessed compared to the brittle failure of an unreinforced timber beam. The results support the assumption that by initially stressing the embedded FRP tendon the structural benefits experienced by the timber member increase in a number of ways, indicating that there is significant scope for this approach in practical applications.

Improvements in the structural performance of glulam timber beams by the inclusion of reinforcing materials can increase both the service performance and ultimate capacity. In recent years research focusing on the addition of fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) to strengthen members has yielded positive results. However, the FRP material is still relatively expensive and its full potential in combination with structural timber has not been realised. This paper describes a series of four-point bending tests that were conducted, under service loads and to failure, on unreinforced, reinforced and post-tensioned glulam timber beams, where the reinforcing tendon used was 12mm diameter basalt fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP). The research was designed to evaluate the benefits offered by including an active reinforcement in contrast to the passive reinforcement typically used within timber strengthening works, in addition to establishing the affect that bonding the reinforcing tendon has on the material’s performance. Further experimental tests have been developed to investigate the long-term implications of this research, with emphasis placed upon creep and loss of post-tensioning.
The laboratory investigations established that the flexural strength and stiffness increased for both the unbonded and bonded post-tensioned timbers compared to the unreinforced beams. Timber that was post-tensioned with an unbonded BFRP tendon showed a flexural strength increase of 2.8% and an increase in stiffness of 8.7%. Post-tensioned beams with a bonded BFRP tendon showed increases in flexural strength and stiffness of 16.6% and 11.5% respectively.

A carbon nanotube free-standing linearly dichroic polariser is developed using solid-state extrusion. Membrane cohesion is experimentally and numerically demonstrated to derive from inter-tube van der Waals interactions in this family of planar metastable morphologies, controlled by the chemical vapour deposition conditions. Ultra-broadband polarisation (400 nm – 2.5 mm) is shown and corroborated by effective medium and full numerical simulations.
