This work aimed to explore evaluated the effects of the increased of hydrostatic pressure on a defined bacterial community on aggregates formed from an axenic culture of marine diatoms by simulating sedimentation to the deep sea by increase of hydrostatic pressure up to 30 bar (equivalent to 3000 m water depth) against control at ambient surface pressure. Our hypothesis was that microbial colonization and community composition and thus microbial OM turnover is greatly affected by changes in hydrostatic pressure during sinking to the deep ocean.

Oxygen minimum zones are expanding globally, and at present account for around 20-40% of oceanic nitrogen loss. Heterotrophic denitrification and anammox-anaerobic ammonium oxidation with nitrite-are responsible for most nitrogen loss in these low-oxygen waters. Anammox is particularly significant in the eastern tropical South Pacific, one of the largest oxygen minimum zones globally. However, the factors that regulate anammox-driven nitrogen loss have remained unclear. Here, we present a comprehensive nitrogen budget for the eastern tropical South Pacific oxygen minimum zone, using measurements of nutrient concentrations, experimentally determined rates of nitrogen transformation and a numerical model of export production. Anammox was the dominant mode of nitrogen loss at the time of sampling. Rates of anammox, and related nitrogen transformations, were greatest in the productive shelf waters, and tailed off with distance from the coast. Within the shelf region, anammox activity peaked in both upper and bottom waters. Overall, rates of nitrogen transformation, including anammox, were strongly correlated with the export of organic matter. We suggest that the sinking of organic matter, and thus the release of ammonium into the water column, together with benthic ammonium release, fuel nitrogen loss from oxygen minimum zones.

As part of the GEOTRACES Polarstern expedition ANT XXIV/3 (ZERO and DRAKE), Polonium-210 and Lead-210 have been measured in the water column and on suspended particulate matter in February to April 2008. Our goal was to resolve the affinities of 210Po and 210Pb to transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) and particulate organic carbon (POC). Polonium-210 and Lead-210 in the ocean can be used to identify the sources and sinks of suspended matter. In seawater, Polonium-210 (210Po) and Lead-210 (210Pb) are produced by stepwise radioactive decay of Uranium-238. 210Po (138 days half life) and 210Pb (22.3 years half life) have high affinities for suspended particles. Those radionuclides are present in dissolved form and adsorbed onto particles. Following adsorption onto particle surfaces, 210Po especially is transported into the interior of cells where it bonds to proteins. In this way, 210Po also accumulates in the food chain. 210Po is therefore considered to be a good tracer for POC, and traces particle export over a timescale of months. 210Pb (22.3 years half life) adsorbs preferably onto structural components of cells, biogenic silica and lithogenic particles, and is therefore a better tracer more rapidly sinking matter. Water samples were taken with Niskin bottles. Dissolved Polonium-210 and Lead-210 activities refer to the fraction < 1µm. Particulate Polonium-210 and Lead-210 refer to the activity on particles >1µm retained on nucleopore filters. Zooplankton retained on the filters was systematically removed as this study focused on phytoplankton and exudates. The data have been submitted to Pangaea following a Polonium-Lead intercalibration exercise organized by GEOTRACES, where the AWI lab results range within the data standard deviation from 10 participating labs.

INTRODUCTION: The EVA (Endoscopic Video Analysis) tracking system a new tracking system for extracting motions of laparoscopic instruments based on non-obtrusive video tracking was developed. The feasibility of using EVA in laparoscopic settings has been tested in a box trainer setup. METHODS: EVA makes use of an algorithm that employs information of the laparoscopic instrument's shaft edges in the image, the instrument's insertion point, and the camera's optical centre to track the 3D position of the instrument tip. A validation study of EVA comprised a comparison of the measurements achieved with EVA and the TrEndo tracking system. To this end, 42 participants (16 novices, 22 residents, and 4 experts) were asked to perform a peg transfer task in a box trainer. Ten motion-based metrics were used to assess their performance. RESULTS: Construct validation of the EVA has been obtained for seven motion-based metrics. Concurrent validation revealed that there is a strong correlation between the results obtained by EVA and the TrEndo for metrics such as path length (p=0,97), average speed (p=0,94) or economy of volume (p=0,85), proving the viability of EVA. CONCLUSIONS: EVA has been successfully used in the training setup showing potential of endoscopic video analysis to assess laparoscopic psychomotor skills. The results encourage further implementation of video tracking in training setups and in image guided surgery.

The numerical analysis of certain safety related problems presents serious difficulties, since the large number of components present leads to huge finite elementmodels that can only be solved by using large and expensive computers or by making rough approaches to the problem. Tangling, or clashing, in the turbine of a jet engine airplane is an example of such problems. This is caused by the crash and friction between rotor and stator blades in the turbine after an eventual shaft failure. When facing the study of an event through numerical modelling, the accurate simulation of this problem would require the engineer to model all the rotor and stator blades existing in the turbine stage, using a small element size in all pieces. Given that the number of stator and rotor blades is usually around 200, such simulations would require millions of elements. This work presents a new numerical methodology, specifically developed for the accurate modelling of the tangling problem that, depending on the turbine configuration, is able to reduce the number of nodes up to an order of magnitude without losing accuracy. The methodology, which benefits from the cyclic configuration of turbines, is successfully applied to the numerical analysis of a hypothetical tangling event in a turbine, providing valuable data such as the rotating velocity decrease of the turbine, the braking torque and the damage suffered by the blades. The methodology is somewhat general and can be applied to any problem in which damage caused by the interaction between a rotating and static piece is to be analysed.

Este proyecto tiene por objetivo la realización de un análisis comparativo de la normativa española existente para el cálculo de la carga de hundimiento de cimentaciones mediante pilotes, viendo el contenido de cada una de ellas y aplicándolo a un caso práctico. Inicialmente se realiza un planteamiento general del modo de cálculo de la carga de hundimiento de los pilotes desde el punto de vista estático. A continuación se recoge la formulación existente en el Código Técnico de la Edificación (CTE), en las Recomendaciones para Obras Marítimas y Portuarios (ROM 05-05) y en la Guía de Cimentaciones en Obras de Carretera (GCOC) viendo de donde se extraen las fórmulas empleadas en ellas. Para pasar a realizar un análisis comparativo de ellas con la ayuda de distintos gráficos y viendo la relación que presentan unos códigos con otros tanto para suelos granulares como cohesivos y pilotes hincados y excavados, que es lo que distinguen los tres códigos generalmente. Por último, se realiza un análisis comparativo de los resultados obtenidos para la cimentación de tres viaductos de la autovía Noroeste de Murcia realizando un análisis económico de esta cimentación. ABSTRACT The aim of this project is to develop a comparative analysis of the actual Spanish regulations for the calculation of sinkings load of foundation design based on timber piles, observing the contents of each and every one of them an applying it to a real and practical situation. To begin with, a general proposal is made from calculation the sinking load of the timber piles from the static point of view. Next, the actual formulation is gathering in “Código Técnico de la Edificación” (CTE), “Recomendaciones para Obras Marítimas y Portuarias” and “Guía de Cimentaciones en Obras de Carretera”, observing where the applied formulas are calculated from. Thereupon, a coparativeanalysis of them is carry out with the help of different graphics and facing the connections from some codes to anothers, not only for granular but for cohesive surface, and for drilling and digging out piles, that’s what generally distinguishes among for three codes. Finally, a comparative analysis of obtained results is carry out for the foundation of the three viaducts of Murcia’s NorthWest motorway, accomplishing economical analysis of this foundation.

Se realizará un análisis en baja frecuencia del comportamiento de sistemas vibratorios excitados principalmente por un motor eléctrico. El sistema está formado por un motor eléctrico acoplado a un volante de inercia que produce una carga sobre citado motor diferente según las configuraciones adoptadas, todo ello montado sobre una base metálica de acero, soportada esta, mediante resortes de diferente características. El estudio contemplará la identificación de frecuencias de excitación, resonancias, pérdidas de inserción de los sistemas, transmisibilidad, problemas de alineamiento, desajustes, modos propios... para cada una de las diferentes situaciones en las que opera el sistema. ABSTRACT. In this Project will proceed to an behavior analysis of vibrating systems in low frequency mainly excited by an electric motor. The system is comprised of an electric motor coupled to inertial flywheel (o flywheel) which produces a different load upon said engine according to the configurations adopted. This system is mounted on a steel metal base which is supported by springs of different characteristics. This study will consider the excitation frequency identification, system resonances, insertion loss, transmissibility, shaft dealignment, eccentricities, mismatches, modal frequencies of the plate… for each of the situations in which the system operates.

This paper presents a multi-stage algorithm for the dynamic condition monitoring of a gear. The algorithm provides information referred to the gear status (fault or normal condition) and estimates the mesh stiffness per shaft revolution in case that any abnormality is detected. In the first stage, the analysis of coefficients generated through discrete wavelet transformation (DWT) is proposed as a fault detection and localization tool. The second stage consists in establishing the mesh stiffness reduction associated with local failures by applying a supervised learning mode and coupled with analytical models. To do this, a multi-layer perceptron neural network has been configured using as input features statistical parameters sensitive to torsional stiffness decrease and derived from wavelet transforms of the response signal. The proposed method is applied to the gear condition monitoring and results show that it can update the mesh dynamic properties of the gear on line.

Este proyecto supone la actualización y modernización de un compresor volumétrico alternativo que se encuentra en el Laboratorio de Máquinas y Motores Térmicos. Para ello, el primer paso ha sido realizar una serie de adaptaciones físicas y electrónicas de las señales que producen los distintos transductores del compresor. Estas adaptaciones han sido necesarias para que las señales pudiesen ser reconocidas por el microcontrolador Arduino. Éste es el encargado de comunicar las señales a LabVIEW 2012 con el que se ha creado un programa de lectura e interpretación de datos. Después de que las señales pasen por dicho programa se obtiene la fuerza que está realizando el motor que mueve el compresor, la presión en cámara del compresor y las revoluciones por minuto a las que gira el eje del motor y por tanto, el compresor. ABSTRACT This project has carried out the updating and modernization of an alternative volumetric compressor located at the Laboratory of Heat Engines. To do so, the first step was to perform a series of physical and electronic adaptations of the signals produced by the different transducers of the compressor. These adjustments were necessary so that the signals could be recognized by the Arduino microcontroller. This is responsible for communicating signals to LabVIEW 2012, used to set up the reading and interpreting data program. Once the signals have passed through the aforementioned program, we obtain the data of the force generated by the motor driving the compressor, the pressure in the compressor chamber and the revolutions per minute of the motor’s rotating shaft, and therefore, the compressor.
