Different conditions of extraction using water, a methanol-water mixture and nitric acid solutions were evaluated for speciation of As(iii), As(v), DMA and MMA in plant samples that previously received As(v) after being sown and emergence was investigated. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) using diluted nitric acid solutions was also performed for arsenic extraction from chicken feed samples. The separation and determination of arsenic species were performed using HPLC-ICP-MS. The interference standard method (IFS) using 83Kr+ as the IFS probe was employed to minimize spectral interferences caused by polyatomic species, such as 40Ar 35Cl+. The extraction procedures tested presented adequate extraction efficiencies (90%), and the four arsenic species evaluated were found in plant samples. Extractions with diluted nitric acid solution at 90 °C were the most efficient strategy, with quantitative recoveries for all four As species in plant tissues. On the other hand, the methanol-water mixture was the solvent with the lowest extraction efficiency (50-60%). For chicken feed samples, MAE at 100 °C for 30 min resulted in an extraction efficiency of 97% and only As(v) was found, without any species interconversion. The IFS method contributed to improving precision and limits of detection and quantification for all tested extraction procedures. Significant improvements on accuracy were obtained by applying the IFS method and recoveries between 77 and 94%, and 82 and 93% were obtained for plant extracts and chicken feed samples, respectively. This work describes the synthesis of highly conducting antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanocrystals prepared via a nonaqueous sol–gel route in the size range of 4–6 nm and provides insights into its electrical properties. The antimony composition was varied from 1 to 18 mol% and the lowest resistivity (4.0 × 10−4Ω·cm) was observed at room temperature in the SnO2:8.8 mol% Sb composition. The samples were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope, and resistivity measurements were taken in the four-probe mode in the temperature range of 13–300 K. The results show highly crystalline nanoparticles in a monodisperse colloidal system, dependence on the shape of ATO nanoparticles as a function of Sb distribution, low resistivity, and semiconductor–metal transition.

To assess the pain intensity of patients administered midazolam and fentanyl citrate before undergoing transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy. This was a study in patients with different indications for prostate biopsy in whom 5 mg of midazolam and 50 µg of fentanyl citrate was administered intravenously 3 minutes before the procedure. After biopsy, pain was assessed by use of a visual analogue scale (VAS) in three stages: VAS 1, during probe introduction; VAS 2, during needle penetration into prostate tissue; and VAS 3, in the weeks following the exam. Pain intensity at these different times was tested with stratification by age, race, education, prostate volume, rebiopsy, and anxiety before biopsy. Pain was ranked according to the following scores: 0 (no pain), 1-3 (mild pain), 4-7 (moderate pain), and 8-10 (severe pain). Statistical analysis was performed by using Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon two-tailed tests with a significance of 5%. Pain intensity was not influenced by any risk factors. The mean VAS 1 score was 1.95±1.98, the mean VAS 2 score was 2.73±2.55, and the mean VAS 3 score was 0.3±0.9, showing greater pain at the time of needle penetration than in other situations (VAS 2>VAS 1>VAS 3, p=0.0013, p=0.0001, respectively). Seventy-five percent of patients reported a VAS pain scale of less than 3.1 or mild pain. Intravenous sedation and analgesia with midazolam and fentanyl citrate is a good method for reducing pain caused by prostate biopsy, even during probe insertion.

We report the absolute values of the c ̂-axis resistivity obtained from conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) experiments at various temperatures for a graphite-AlCl3 stage 2 compound. The agreement with d.c. measurements is quite good. The temperature dependence of the c ̂-axis resistivity previously obtained from CESR for graphite-AlCl3 is revised. © 1990.

The biogas originated from anaerobic degradation of organic matter in landfills consists basically in CH4, CO2, and H2O. The landfills represent an important depository of organic matter with high energetic potential in Brazil, although with inexpressive use in the present. The estimation of production of the productive rate of biogas represents one of the major difficulties of technical order to the planning of capture system for rational consumption of this resource. The applied geophysics consists in a set of methods and techniques with wide use in environmental and hydrogeological studies. The DC resistivity method is largely applied in environmental diagnosis of the contamination in soil and groundwater, due to the contrast of electrical properties frequent between contaminated areas and the natural environment. This paper aims to evaluate eventual relationships between biogas flows quantified in drains located in the landfill, with characteristic patterns of electrical resistivity in depth. The drain of higher flow (117 m3 /h) in depth was characterized for values between 8000 Ω⋅m and 100.000 Ω⋅m, in contrast with values below 2000 Ω⋅m, which characterize in subsurface the drain with less flow (37 m3 /h), besides intermediary flow and electrical resistivity values, attributed to the predominance of areas with accumulation or generation of biogas.
