This proposal assumes that the migration process is a socio-spatial process. Where desires, goals, fears and hopes of migrating become identities, social constructs that ultimately lead to ways of belonging. Place is a form of interaction, whether between man and the environment, or the man with a specific space. Place demand belonging. Belonging demand identity. Migration then became a strategy, a resistance, an eternal possibility or impossibility of staying or leaving. The displacements eventually cause changes in the relationships and interactions of individuals in their most different spaces. In this sense, they grasp the shifting process of an individual or social group, it is seen that migration and immigration is a process beyond "of being in different social spaces", is a mode of social reproduction defined in relations of time and space, emphasizing the duality of being in motion. Therefore, this proposal seeks to emphasize the dynamics of migration and immigration process in their contexts, as well as highlight the economic social constructions arising from these proceedings, in its social, cultural, political and, thus characterizing the various identities of individuals

Digital services and communications in vehicular scenarios provide the essential assets to improve road transport in several ways like reducing accidents, improving traffic efficiency and optimizing the transport of goods and people. Vehicular communications typically rely on VANET (Vehicular Ad hoc Networks). In these networks vehicles communicate with each other without the need of infrastructure. VANET are mainly oriented to disseminate information to the vehicles in certain geographic area for time critical services like safety warnings but present very challenging requirements that have not been successfully fulfilled nowadays. Some of these challenges are; channel saturation due to simultaneous radio access of many vehicles, routing protocols in topologies that vary rapidly, minimum quality of service assurance and security mechanisms to efficiently detect and neutralize malicious attacks. Vehicular services can be classified in four important groups: Safety, Efficiency, Sustainability and Infotainment. The benefits of these services for the transport sector are clear but many technological and business challenges need to be faced before a real mass market deployment. Service delivery platforms are not prepared for fulfilling the needs of this complex environment with restrictive requirements due to the criticism of some services To overcome this situation, we propose a solution called VISIONS “Vehicular communication Improvement: Solution based on IMS Operational Nodes and Services”. VISIONS leverages on IMS subsystem and NGN enablers, and follows the CALM reference Architecture standardized by ISO. It also avoids the use of Road Side Units (RSUs), reducing complexity and high costs in terms of deployment and maintenance. We demonstrate the benefits in the following areas: 1. VANET networks efficiency. VISIONS provide a mechanism for the vehicles to access valuable information from IMS and its capabilities through a cellular channel. This efficiency improvement will occur in two relevant areas: a. Routing mechanisms. These protocols are responsible of carrying information from a vehicle to another (or a group of vehicles) using multihop mechanisms. We do not propose a new algorithm but the use of VANET topology information provided through our solution to enrich the performance of these protocols. b. Security. Many aspects of security (privacy, key, authentication, access control, revocation mechanisms, etc) are not resolved in vehicular communications. Our solution efficiently disseminates revocation information to neutralize malicious nodes in the VANET. 2. Service delivery platform. It is based on extended enablers, reference architectures, standard protocols and open APIs. By following this approach, we reduce costs and resources for service development, deployment and maintenance. To quantify these benefits in VANET networks, we provide an analytical model of the system and simulate our solution in realistic scenarios. The simulations results demonstrate how VISIONS improves the performance of relevant routing protocols and is more efficient neutralizing security attacks than the widely proposed solutions based on RSUs. Finally, we design an innovative Social Network service based in our platform, explaining how VISIONS facilitate the deployment and usage of complex capabilities.

ABSTRACT Nowadays, with the ongoing and rapid evolution of information technology and computing devices, large volumes of data are continuously collected and stored in different domains and through various real-world applications. Extracting useful knowledge from such a huge amount of data usually cannot be performed manually, and requires the use of adequate machine learning and data mining techniques. Classification is one of the most important techniques that has been successfully applied to several areas. Roughly speaking, classification consists of two main steps: first, learn a classification model or classifier from an available training data, and secondly, classify the new incoming unseen data instances using the learned classifier. Classification is supervised when the whole class values are present in the training data (i.e., fully labeled data), semi-supervised when only some class values are known (i.e., partially labeled data), and unsupervised when the whole class values are missing in the training data (i.e., unlabeled data). In addition, besides this taxonomy, the classification problem can be categorized into uni-dimensional or multi-dimensional depending on the number of class variables, one or more, respectively; or can be also categorized into stationary or streaming depending on the characteristics of the data and the rate of change underlying it. Through this thesis, we deal with the classification problem under three different settings, namely, supervised multi-dimensional stationary classification, semi-supervised unidimensional streaming classification, and supervised multi-dimensional streaming classification. To accomplish this task, we basically used Bayesian network classifiers as models. The first contribution, addressing the supervised multi-dimensional stationary classification problem, consists of two new methods for learning multi-dimensional Bayesian network classifiers from stationary data. They are proposed from two different points of view. The first method, named CB-MBC, is based on a wrapper greedy forward selection approach, while the second one, named MB-MBC, is a filter constraint-based approach based on Markov blankets. Both methods are applied to two important real-world problems, namely, the prediction of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase and protease inhibitors, and the prediction of the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) from 39-item Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39). The experimental study includes comparisons of CB-MBC and MB-MBC against state-of-the-art multi-dimensional classification methods, as well as against commonly used methods for solving the Parkinson’s disease prediction problem, namely, multinomial logistic regression, ordinary least squares, and censored least absolute deviations. For both considered case studies, results are promising in terms of classification accuracy as well as regarding the analysis of the learned MBC graphical structures identifying known and novel interactions among variables. The second contribution, addressing the semi-supervised uni-dimensional streaming classification problem, consists of a novel method (CPL-DS) for classifying partially labeled data streams. Data streams differ from the stationary data sets by their highly rapid generation process and their concept-drifting aspect. That is, the learned concepts and/or the underlying distribution are likely changing and evolving over time, which makes the current classification model out-of-date requiring to be updated. CPL-DS uses the Kullback-Leibler divergence and bootstrapping method to quantify and detect three possible kinds of drift: feature, conditional or dual. Then, if any occurs, a new classification model is learned using the expectation-maximization algorithm; otherwise, the current classification model is kept unchanged. CPL-DS is general as it can be applied to several classification models. Using two different models, namely, naive Bayes classifier and logistic regression, CPL-DS is tested with synthetic data streams and applied to the real-world problem of malware detection, where the new received files should be continuously classified into malware or goodware. Experimental results show that our approach is effective for detecting different kinds of drift from partially labeled data streams, as well as having a good classification performance. Finally, the third contribution, addressing the supervised multi-dimensional streaming classification problem, consists of two adaptive methods, namely, Locally Adaptive-MB-MBC (LA-MB-MBC) and Globally Adaptive-MB-MBC (GA-MB-MBC). Both methods monitor the concept drift over time using the average log-likelihood score and the Page-Hinkley test. Then, if a drift is detected, LA-MB-MBC adapts the current multi-dimensional Bayesian network classifier locally around each changed node, whereas GA-MB-MBC learns a new multi-dimensional Bayesian network classifier from scratch. Experimental study carried out using synthetic multi-dimensional data streams shows the merits of both proposed adaptive methods.

ABSTRACT Particular elements of the voice are printed during the speech production process and are related to anatomical and physiological factors of the phonatory system or psychosocial factors acquired by the speaker. ASR systems attempt to find those peculiar nuances of a voice and associate them to an individual or a group. Age and gender are inherent factors to the speaker which may be represented in voice. This work attempts to differentiate those characteristics, isolate them and use them to detect speaker’s gender and age. Features based on glottal pulse and vocal tract are studied and analyzed in order to achieve good results in both tasks. Classical methodologies (such as pitch and derivates) are avoided since the requirements of those techniques may be too restrictive. The final scores achieve almost 100% in gender recognition whereas in age recognition those scores are around 80%. Factors related to the gender and hormones seem to affect the voice although they are not audible.

ABSTRACT The present doctoral thesis studies a new mineral-based composite material, composed by a gypsum matrix (based on an industrial multiphase gypsum binder) and mesoporous hydrophobic silica aerogel particles, compatibilized with a polymeric surfactant due to the high hydrophobic character of the insulating particles. This study pretends to contribute to the development of new composite insulating materials that could be used in energy renovation of existing dwellings, in order to reduce their high energy consumption, as they represent a great part of the total energy consumed in Spain, but also internationally. Between the materials used to develop de studied insulating mortars, gypsum, besides being an abundant material, especially in Spain, requires less energy for the manufacture of a mineral binder (due to lower manufacturing temperatures), compared to lime or cement, thus presenting lower carbon footprint. In other hand, the hydrophobic mesoporous silica aerogel, is, according to the existing references, the material with the highest know insulating capacity in the market. The development of new mineral mortars with higher thermal insulation capacity than traditional insulating materials, presents a relevant application in energy retrofitting of historic and cultural heritage buildings, in which implies that the insulating material should be installed as an internal layer, rather than as an external insulating system. This type of solution involves a reduced internal useful area, especially in climatic zones where the demand for thermal insulation is higher, and so the insulating layer thickness, being idealistic to use materials with very high insulating properties, in order to reach same insulating level (or higher), but in lower thickness than the provided by traditional insulating materials. This research is developed in three main stages: bibliographic, experimental and simulation. The first stage starts by studying the existing references regarding thermally insulating materials, including existing insulating mortars and insulating panels. The second stage, mainly experimental, is centered in the study of the the influence of the microstructure and macrostructure in the physical and mechanical properties, and also in the thermal conductivity of the new mineral-based material. The thirds stage, through energy simulation, consists in theoretically quantifying the energy savings potential that can provide this type of insulating material, in a particular energy retrofitting case study. The experimental research is mainly focused in the study of the factors that influence the mechanical properties and the thermal conductivity of the thermal insulating mineral composites developed in this thesis. For this, the characterization of the studied materials has been performed, as well as the development of several experimental samples, in order to study the hydration of the mineral binder within the composites, but also the final microstructure and macrostructure, fundamental aspects for the understanding of the composite’s mechanical and insulating properties. Thus, is was possible to determine and quantify the factors that influence the studied material properties, providing a knowledge base and understanding of mineral composites that comprises mesoporous hydrophobic silica aerogel particles, being the first study up to date regarding the specific approach of the present study, regarding not just multiphase calcium sulfate plaster, but also other mineral binders. Particularly, the influence of the incorporation of hydrophobic silica aerogel particles, in high volume ratios into a mineral compound, based on different phases of calcium sulfate has been determined. However, to perform mixing, it is necessary to use a surfactant in order to compatibilize these particles with the water-based mineral binder. The use of such additives has an influence, not only in the aerogel, but the overall properties of the compound, so two different surfactant concentration has been studied: the first, the minimum amount of surfactant (used in this thesis) in order to develop the slurries (0.1% concentration of the mixing water), and the second, as the upper limit, the concentration usually used industrially to stabilize air bubbles in foamed concrete (5%). One of the side effects of using such additive, was the modification of the aerogel particles, by changing their behavior in respect to water, generating a partial invasion of the aerogel’s porous structure, by the mixing water. This behavior produces a very important increase in water/binder ratios, affecting the crystal habit and negatively influencing the mechanical properties of the gypsum matrix. This effect further increased when a higher concentration of surfactant (5%) is used. Regarding final materials properties, it was possible to achieve an ultra-lightweight mineral composite (200 kg/m3), with around 60% by volume of aerogel, presenting a very high insulating capacity (0.028 W/m•K), a noticeable lower thermal conductivity compared to the insulating mortars and traditional thermal insulating panels on the market, such as mineral wool or EPS; however, the limiting factor for future’s material application in buildings, is related to the very low mechanical properties achieved. Among the main factors related to the mechanical properties, it has been found an exponential correlation to the volume of gypsum in the composite. However, second-order factors such as the degree of hydration, or a better distribution of the binder between the aerogel particles, due to the increased surface area of the mineral powder, can increase the mechanical properties between two to three times, depending aerogel volume involved. In addition, it was found that the aerogel, together with the surfactant, is able to entrain a large amount of air volume (around 0.70 m3 per m3 of aerogel), which together with the evaporated water (not consumed by the binder during hydration), can reach generally around 40% of entrained air within the gypsum matrix, regardless of the amount of aerogel in the mixture. Thus, the entrained air into the matrix displaces the volume proportions of the aerogel and gypsum, reducing both mechanical and insulating properties of the mineral composite. On the other hand, it has been observed a direct contribution of three main phases into the thermal conductivity of the composite: gypsum, aerogel and entrained air. Thus, it was possible to develop a mathematical model (adapted from an existing one), capable of calculating quite accurate the thermal conductivity of such mineral composites, from the ratio these three components and for the range of volumes and materials used in this thesis. Finally, the energy simulation performed to a typical Spanish dwelling, from the years 1900 to 1959 (mainly constructed with massive clay bricks), within three climatic zones of Spain (A, D and E), showed the energy savings potential that can provide this type of insulating material, depending on the thickness of the applied layer. Particularly, for the climatic A zone, it has been found an optimal layer thickness of 1 cm, while for zone D and E, 3.5 and 3.9 cm respectively. In this manner, the new studied materials is capable of decreasing the thickness of the insulating layer by 35% and 80%, compared with rock wool panels or mineral mortars with the highest insulating performance of the Spanish market respectively.

Measurement of fluorescent lifetimes of dye-tagged DNA molecules reveal the existence of different conformations. Conformational fluctuations observed by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy give rise to a relaxation behavior that is described by “stretched” exponentials and indicates the presence of a distribution of transition rates between two conformations. Whether this is an inhomogeneous distribution, where each molecule contributes with its own reaction rate to the overall distribution, or a homogeneous distribution, where the reaction rate of each molecule is time-dependent, is not yet known. We used a tetramethylrhodamine-linked 217-bp DNA oligonucleotide as a probe for conformational fluctuations. Fluorescence fluctuations from single DNA molecules attached to a streptavidin-coated surface directly show the transitions between two conformational states. The conformational fluctuations typical for single molecules are similar to those seen in single ion channels in cell membranes.

The active site of the allosteric chorismate mutase (chorismate pyruvatemutase, EC 5.4.99.5) from yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (YCM) was located by comparison with the mutase domain (ECM) of chorismate mutase/prephenate dehydratase [prephenate hydro-lyase (decarboxylating), EC 4.2.1.51] (the P protein) from Escherichia coli. Active site domains of these two enzymes show very similar four-helix bundles, each of 94 residues which superimpose with a rms deviation of 1.06 A. Of the seven active site residues, four are conserved: the two arginines, which bind to the inhibitor's two carboxylates; the lysine, which binds to the ether oxygen; and the glutamate, which binds to the inhibitor's hydroxyl group in ECM and presumably in YCM. The other three residues in YCM (ECM) are Thr-242 (Ser-84), Asn-194 (Asp-48), and Glu-246 (Gln-88). This Glu-246, modeled close to the ether oxygen of chorismate in YCM, may function as a polarizing or ionizable group, which provides another facet to the catalytic mechanism.

The guinea pig estrogen sulfotransferase gene has been cloned and compared to three other cloned steroid and phenol sulfotransferase genes (human estrogen sulfotransferase, human phenol sulfotransferase, and guinea pig 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid sulfotransferase). The four sulfotransferase genes demonstrate a common outstanding feature: the splice sites for their 3'-terminal exons are identically located. That is, the 3'-terminal exon splice sites involve a glycine that constitutes the N-terminal glycine of an invariably conserved GXXGXXK motif present in all steroid and phenol sulfotransferases for which primary structures are known. This consistency strongly suggests that all steroid and phenol sulfotransferase genes will be similarly spliced. The GXXGXXK motif forms the active binding site for the universal sulfonate donor 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulfate. Amino acid sequence alignment of 19 cloned steroid and phenol sulfotransferases starting with the GXXGXXK motif indicates that the 3'-terminal exon for each steroid and phenol sulfotransferase gene encodes a similarly sized C-terminal fragment of the protein. Interestingly, on further analysis of the alignment, three distinct amino acid sequence patterns emerge. The presence of the conserved functional GXXGXXK motif suggests that the protein domains encoded by steroid and phenol sulfotransferase 3'-terminal exons have evolved from a common ancestor. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that during the course of evolution, the 3'-terminal exon further diverged into at least three sulfotransferase subdivisions: a phenol or aryl group, an estrogen or phenolic steroid group, and a neutral steroid group.

It is no secret that Black men have struggled over the years to obtain the same level of high earning financial success as their White counterparts. Black men face an incredible challenge with regard to educational obtainment, career success, and physical health. Black men are often revered as the most dangerous, least educated, and more unhealthy than any other race or gender. This must change. This researcher investigated the lives of eight successful Black men with the hope of determining how they were able to attain their success. The findings of this research suggest that there are several factors that are key contributors in becoming a successful Black man in America. With a greater understanding of how Black men have managed to gain success, despite the obstacles they have faced, it is hopeful that this research will help other Black men reach the level of success that is often desired and seldom realized.
