In this work, porous membranes were designed by selectively etching the PEO phase, by water, from a melt-mixed PE/PEO blend. The pure water flux and the resistance across the membrane were systematically evaluated by employing an indigenously developed cross flow membrane setup. Both the phase morphology and the cross sectional morphology of the membranes was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and an attempt was made to correlate the observed morphology with the membrane performance. In order to design antibacterial membranes for water purification, partially reduced graphene oxide (rGO), silver nanoparticles (Ag) and silver nanoparticles decorated with rGO (rGO-Ag) were synthesized and incorporated directly into the blends during melt mixing. The loss of viability of bacterial cells was determined by the colony counting method using E. coli as a model bacterium. SEM images display that the direct contact with the rGO-Ag nanoparticles disrupts the cell membrane. In addition, the rGO-Ag nanoparticles exhibited a synergistic effect with respect to bacterial cell viability in comparison to both rGO and Ag nanoparticles. The possible mechanism associated with the antibacterial activity in the membranes was discussed. This study opens new avenues in designing antibacterial membranes for water purification.

An unprecedented morphology of a titanium dioxide (TiO2) and cadmium sulfide (CdS) self-assembly obtained using a `truly' one-pot and highly cost effective method with a multi-gram scale yield is reported here. The TiO2-CdS assembly, comprising of TiO2 and CdS nanoparticles residing next to each other homogeneously self-assembling into `woollen knitting ball' like microspheres, exhibited remarkable potential as a visible light photocatalyst with high recyclability.

One-step synthesis of a cyclic 2,17-dioxo3,3](4,4') biphenylophane (MC) was achieved in high yield; its structure was verified by single crystal X-ray analysis. As a first example, a microporous polymer network was formed from macrocycle MC via acid-catalysed cyclotrimerization yielding a BET surface area of ca. 570 m(2) g(-1).

In this work, it is demonstrated that the in situ growth of oriented nanometric aggregates of partially inverted zinc ferrite can potentially pave a way to alter and tune magnetocrystalline anisotropy that, in turn, dictates ferromagnetic resonance frequency (f(FMR)) by inducing strain due to aggregation. Furthermore, the influence of interparticle interaction on magnetic properties of the aggregates is investigated. Mono-dispersed zinc ferrite nanoparticles (<5 nm) with various degrees of aggregation were prepared through decomposition of metal-organic compounds of zinc (II) and iron (III) in an alcoholic solution under controlled microwave irradiation, below 200 degrees C. The nanocrystallites were found to possess high degree of inversion (>0.5). With increasing order of aggregation in the samples, saturation magnetization (at 5 K) is found to decrease from 38 emu/g to 24 emu/g, while coercivity is found to increase gradually by up to 100% (525 Oe to 1040 Oe). Anisotropy-mediated shift of f(FMR) has also been measured and discussed. In essence, the result exhibits an easy way to control the magnetic characteristics of nanocrystalline zinc ferrite, boosted with significant degree of inversion, at GHz frequencies. We use Floquet theory to study the maximum value of the stroboscopic group velocity in a one-dimensional tight-binding model subjected to an on-site staggered potential varying sinusoidally in time. The results obtained by numerically diagonalizing the Floquet operator are analyzed using a variety of analytical schemes. In the low-frequency limit we use adiabatic theory, while in the high-frequency limit the Magnus expansion of the Floquet Hamiltonian turns out to be appropriate. When the magnitude of the staggered potential is much greater or much less than the hopping, we use degenerate Floquet perturbation theory; we find that dynamical localization occurs in the former case when the maximum group velocity vanishes. Finally, starting from an ``engineered'' initial state where the particles (taken to be hard-core bosons) are localized in one part of the chain, we demonstrate that the existence of a maximum stroboscopic group velocity manifests in a light-cone-like spreading of the particles in real space.

In this paper, we consider decode-and-forward (DF) relay beamforming for secrecy with cooperative jamming (CJ) in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. The communication between a source-destination pair is aided by a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay. The source has one transmit antenna and the destination and eavesdroppers have one receive antenna each. The source and the MIMO relay are constrained with powers P-S and P-R, respectively. We relax the rank-1 constraint on the signal beamforming matrix and transform the secrecy rate max-min optimization problem to a single maximization problem, which is solved by semidefinite programming techniques. We obtain the optimum source power, signal relay weights, and jamming covariance matrix. We show that the solution of the rank-relaxed optimization problem has rank-1. Numerical results show that CJ can improve the secrecy rate.

Single crystalline LiTaO3 nanorods (length of 2.5-6 mu m and diameter of 200-500 nm) were synthesized via a facile molten-salt technique. An individual single crystalline nanorod exhibited a piezoelectric coefficient of 8 pm V-1. An improved optical frequency-doubling efficiency was observed in the case of LiTaO3 nanorods as compared to that of cubic crystallites of similar size.

The rare examples of intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HB) of the type the N-H center dot center dot center dot F-C, detected in a low polarity solvent in the derivatives of hydrazides, by utilizing one and two-dimensional solution state multinuclear NMR techniques, are reported. The observation of through-space couplings, such as, (1h)J(FH), and (1h)J(FN), provides direct evidence for the existence of intra-molecular HB. Solvent induced perturbations and the variable temperature NMR experiments unambiguously establish the presence of intramolecular HB. The existence of multiple conformers in some of the investigated molecules is also revealed by two dimensional HOESY and N-15-H-1 HSQC experiments. The H-1 DOSY experimental results discard any possibility of self or cross dimerization of the molecules. The derived NMR experimental results are further substantiated by Density Function Theory (DFT) based Non Covalent Interaction (NCI), and Quantum Theory of Atom in Molecule (QTAIM) calculations. The NCI calculations served as a very sensitive tool for detection of non-covalent interactions and also confirm the presence of bifurcated HBs.

The clever designs of natural transducers are a great source of inspiration for man-made systems. At small length scales, there are many transducers in nature that we are now beginning to understand and learn from. Here, we present an example of such a transducer that is used by field crickets to produce their characteristic song. This transducer uses two distinct components-a file of discrete teeth and a plectrum that engages intermittently to produce a series of impulses forming the loading, and an approximately triangular membrane, called the harp, that acts as a resonator and vibrates in response to the impulse-train loading. The file-and-plectrum act as a frequency multiplier taking the low wing beat frequency as the input and converting it into an impulse-train of sufficiently high frequency close to the resonant frequency of the harp. The forced vibration response results in beats producing the characteristic sound of the cricket song. With careful measurements of the harp geometry and experimental measurements of its mechanical properties (Young's modulus determined from nanoindentation tests), we construct a finite element (FE) model of the harp and carry out modal analysis to determine its natural frequency. We fine tune the model with appropriate elastic boundary conditions to match the natural frequency of the harp of a particular species-Gryllus bimaculatus. We model impulsive loading based on a loading scheme reported in literature and predict the transient response of the harp. We show that the harp indeed produces beats and its frequency content matches closely that of the recorded song. Subsequently, we use our FE model to show that the natural design is quite robust to perturbations in the file. The characteristic song frequency produced is unaffected by variations in the spacing of file-teeth and even by larger gaps. Based on the understanding of how this natural transducer works, one can design and fabricate efficient microscale acoustic devices such as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) loudspeakers.

Polycyclic aromatic molecules such as ellipticine intercalate into double-stranded DNA and interfere with physiological functions. In the present study, we evaluate the chemotherapeutic potential of MPTQ on animal models and its mode of action. In order to test the antitumor activity, monohydrochloride of MPTQ was orally administered in mice bearing tumor. Results showed a significant inhibition of tumor growth compared to that of untreated controls. More importantly, mean lifespan of tumor bearing animals treated with MPTQ was significantly higher as compared to that of untreated tumor bearing mice suggesting that the treatment affected viability of cancerous cells, but not of normal cells. Consistent with this, we find that administration of MPTQ to normal mice did not cause any major side effects as observed upon hematological and serum profiling. We also found that MPTQ induces cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines, by activating apoptosis both by intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. Thus, MPTQ could be used as a potential cancer therapeutic agent. A detailed study of tetrathiomolybdate mediated tandem regio- and stereoselective ring opening of aziridine, disulfide formation, reduction of disulfide bond and Michael reaction in a one-pot operation is reported. This constitutes four reactions that take place in one-pot operation. In the reaction of BnEt3N](4)MoS4 with an aziridine derived from cyclohexene and in the absence of Michael acceptor intermediates sulfonamidodisulfide and sulfonamidothiol were isolated and fully characterized. It has also been shown that it is possible to carry out selective opening of the aziridine ring in the presence of an epoxide. By incorporating a suitable Michael acceptor as part of the substrate, intramolecular 1,4-addition could be performed, to achieve the synthesis of sulfur containing acyclic, cyclic amino acid ester derivatives and thia-bicyclo3.3.1]nonane derivatives in good yields. Ho3+ (0.25-7 mol%) doped Sr2CeO4 nanophosphors were synthesized by solution combustion method using urea as fuel. The structural properties of the nanophosphors were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction studies (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. UV-Visible and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic techniques were used for analysing the optical properties of the nanoparticles. PXRD and TEM results revealed the formation of Sr2CeO4: Ho3+ nanocrystalline particles with orthorhombic crystal structure. From the UV-Vis studies the optical band gap energy found to decrease from 5.9 to 5.74 eV with increase in dopant concentration. The PL spectra exhibit the broad excitation band from 200 to 400 nm which concurs well with the commercial near UV LED. The PL spectra vary with the dopant content due to energy transfer from the host to the activator. In this present work we demonstrate that color tuning of phosphor can be achieved by merely varying the Ho3+ ions concentration. The CIE and CCT chromaticity coordinates suggests Sr2CeO4: Ho3+ nanophosphors may be potentially applicable as promising single - phased phosphors for lighting applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. We have synthesized a series of 4'-aryl substituted 2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (terpy) derivatives, namely 4'-(4-methylphenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (C-1), 4'-(2-furyl)-2,2':6'2 `'-terpyridine (C-2), and 4'-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2 `'-terpyridine (C-3). The synthesized terpy compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR, NMR (H-1 and C-13), and ESI-Mass spectrometry. Photophysical, electrochemical and thermal properties of terpy compounds were systematically studied. Maximum excitation band was observed between 240 and 330 nm using UV-visible spectra, and maximum emission peaks from PL spectra were observed at 385, 405 and 440 nm for C-1, C-2 and C-3 respectively. Fluorescence lifetime (tau) of the fluorophores was found to be 035 and 1.55 ns at the excitation wavelength of 406 nm for C-1 and C-2 respectively, and tau value for C-3 was found to be 0.29 ns at the excitation wavelength of 468 nm. We noticed that the calculated values of HOMO energy levels were increased from 5.96 (C-1) to 6.08 (C-3) eV, which confirms that C-3 derivative is more electrons donating in nature. The calculated electrochemical band gaps were 2.95, 2.82 and 3.02 eV for C-1, C-2 and C-3 respectively. These blue fluorescent emitter derivatives can be used as an electron transport and electroluminescent material to design the blue fluorescent organic light emitting diode (OLED) applications.
