At the present work the bifurcational behaviour of the solutions of Rayleigh equation and corresponding spatially distributed system is being analysed. The conditions of oscillatory and monotonic loss of stability are obtained. In the case of oscillatory loss of stability, the analysis of linear spectral problem is being performed. For nonlinear problem, recurrent formulas for the general term of the asymptotic approximation of the self-oscillations are found, the stability of the periodic mode is analysed. Lyapunov-Schmidt method is being used for asymptotic approximation. The correlation between periodic solutions of ODE and PDE is being investigated. The influence of the diffusion on the frequency of self-oscillations is being analysed. Several numerical experiments are being performed in order to support theoretical findings.

The electrocardiography (ECG) QT interval is influenced by fluctuations in heart rate (HR) what may lead to misinterpretation of its length. Considering that alterations in QT interval length reflect abnormalities of the ventricular repolarisation which predispose to occurrence of arrhythmias, this variable must be properly evaluated. The aim of this work is to determine which method of correcting the QT interval is the most appropriate for dogs regarding different ranges of normal HR (different breeds). Healthy adult dogs (n=130; German Shepherd, Boxer, Pit Bull Terrier, and Poodle) were submitted to ECG examination and QT intervals were determined in triplicates from the bipolar limb II lead and corrected for the effects of HR through the application of three published formulae involving quadratic, cubic or linear regression. The mean corrected QT values (QTc) obtained using the diverse formulae were significantly different (ρ<0.05), while those derived according to the equation QTcV = QT + 0.087(1- RR) were the most consistent (linear regression). QTcV values were strongly correlated (r=0.83) with the QT interval and showed a coefficient of variation of 8.37% and a 95% confidence interval of 0.22-0.23 s. Owing to its simplicity and reliability, the QTcV was considered the most appropriate to be used for the correction of QT interval in dogs.

In recent years the analysis and synthesis of (mechanical) control systems in descriptor form has been established. This general description of dynamical systems is important for many applications in mechanics and mechatronics, in electrical and electronic engineering, and in chemical engineering as well. This contribution deals with linear mechanical descriptor systems and its control design with respect to a quadratic performance criterion. Here, the notion of properness plays an important role whether the standard Riccati approach can be applied as usual or not. Properness and non-properness distinguish between the cases if the descriptor system is exclusively governed by the control input or by its higher-order time-derivatives additionally. In the unusual case of non-proper systems a quite different problem of optimal control design has to be considered. Both cases will be solved completely.

A theory for the description of turbulent boundary layer flows over surfaces with a sudden change in roughness is considered. The theory resorts to the concept of displacement in origin to specify a wall function boundary condition for a kappa-epsilon model. An approximate algebraic expression for the displacement in origin is obtained from the experimental data by using the chart method of Perry and Joubert(J.F.M., vol. 17, pp. 193-122, 1963). This expression is subsequently included in the near wall logarithmic velocity profile, which is then adopted as a boundary condition for a kappa-epsilon modelling of the external flow. The results are compared with the lower atmospheric observations made by Bradley(Q. J. Roy. Meteo. Soc., vol. 94, pp. 361-379, 1968) as well as with velocity profiles extracted from a set of wind tunnel experiments carried out by Avelino et al.( 7th ENCIT, 1998). The measurements are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical computations. The skin-friction coefficient was calculated according to the chart method of Perry and Joubert(J.F.M., vol. 17, pp. 193-122, 1963) and to a balance of the integral momentum equation. In particular, the growth of the internal boundary layer thickness obtained from the numerical simulation is compared with predictions of the experimental data calculated by two methods, the "knee" point method and the "merge" point method.

In this work it is presented a systematic procedure for constructing the solution of a large class of nonlinear conduction heat transfer problems through the minimization of quadratic functionals like the ones usually employed for linear descriptions. The proposed procedure gives rise to an efficient and easy way for carrying out numerical simulations of nonlinear heat transfer problems by means of finite elements. To illustrate the procedure a particular problem is simulated by means of a finite element approximation.

This article discusses three possible ways to derive time domain boundary integral representations for elastodynamics. This discussion points out possible difficulties found when using those formulations to deal with practical applications. The discussion points out recommendations to select the convenient integral representation to deal with elastodynamic problems and opens the possibility of deriving simplified schemes. The proper way to take into account initial conditions applied to the body is an interesting topict shown. It illustrates the main differences between the discussed boundary integral representation expressions, their singularities and possible numerical problems. The correct way to use collocation points outside the analyzed domain is carefully described. Some applications are shown at the end of the paper, in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the technique when properly used.

This paper studies the effect of time delay on the active non-linear control of dynamically loaded flexible structures. The behavior of non-linear systems under state feedback control, considering a fixed time delay for the control force, is investigated. A control method based on non-linear optimal control, using a tensorial formulation and state feedback control is used. The state equations and the control forces are expressed in polynomial form and a performance index, quadratic in both state vector and control forces, is used. General polynomial representations of the non-linear control law are obtained and implemented for control algorithms up to the fifth order. This methodology is applied to systems with quadratic and cubic non-linearities. Strongly non-linear systems are tested and the effectiveness of the control system including a delay for the application of control forces is discussed. Numerical results indicate that the adopted control algorithm can be efficient for non-linear systems, chiefly in the presence of strong non-linearities but increasing time delay reduces the efficiency of the control system. Numerical results emphasize the importance of considering time delay in the project of active structural control systems.

Kombinatorisk optimering handlar om att hitta en bra eller rent av den bästa möjliga lösningen från ett känt antal lösningar eller kombinationer. Ofta är antalet lösningar så enormt att en genomgång av alla olika lösningar inte är möjlig. En av huvudorsakerna till att det forskas inom kombinatorisk optimering är att liknande frågeställningar eller problem uppkommer inom så många olika områden. Påståendet stämmer speciellt bra för kvadratiska tilldelningsproblem(eng. Quadratic Assignment Problem). Sådana problem uppstår då man försöker beskriva en stor mängd tillämpade frågeställningar. Vilken gate skall väljas för flygen på större flygplatser för att minimera den totala väg människorna behöver gå och bagaget förflyttas? Var skall olika avdelningar på en fabrik placeras för att minimera materialförflyttningar mellan avdelningarna? Hur ser ett optimalt tangentbord ut för olika språk? Var skall komponenterna placeras på ett kretskort? De här är alla frågor som kan besvaras genom att lösa kvadratiska tilldelningsproblem. Kvadratiska tilldelningsproblem är dock mycket svåra att lösa. Det beror på att problemet i den standardform det matematiskt formuleras i huvudsak består av produkter av binära variabler. I denna avhandling har problemet omformulerats till en linjär diskret form som innehåller färre variabler. Med omformuleringen har bland annat flera tidigare olösta kvadratiska tilldelningsproblem kunnat lösas till globalt optimum, den bästa möjliga lösningen, för första gången någonsin.

Global illumination algorithms are at the center of realistic image synthesis and account for non-trivial light transport and occlusion within scenes, such as indirect illumination, ambient occlusion, and environment lighting. Their computationally most difficult part is determining light source visibility at each visible scene point. Height fields, on the other hand, constitute an important special case of geometry and are mainly used to describe certain types of objects such as terrains and to map detailed geometry onto object surfaces. The geometry of an entire scene can also be approximated by treating the distance values of its camera projection as a screen-space height field. In order to shadow height fields from environment lights a horizon map is usually used to occlude incident light. We reduce the per-receiver time complexity of generating the horizon map on N N height fields from O(N) of the previous work to O(1) by using an algorithm that incrementally traverses the height field and reuses the information already gathered along the path of traversal. We also propose an accurate method to integrate the incident light within the limits given by the horizon map. Indirect illumination in height fields requires information about which other points are visible to each height field point. We present an algorithm to determine this intervisibility in a time complexity that matches the space complexity of the produced visibility information, which is in contrast to previous methods which scale in the height field size. As a result the amount of computation is reduced by two orders of magnitude in common use cases. Screen-space ambient obscurance methods approximate ambient obscurance from the depth bu er geometry and have been widely adopted by contemporary real-time applications. They work by sampling the screen-space geometry around each receiver point but have been previously limited to near- field effects because sampling a large radius quickly exceeds the render time budget. We present an algorithm that reduces the quadratic per-pixel complexity of previous methods to a linear complexity by line sweeping over the depth bu er and maintaining an internal representation of the processed geometry from which occluders can be efficiently queried. Another algorithm is presented to determine ambient obscurance from the entire depth bu er at each screen pixel. The algorithm scans the depth bu er in a quick pre-pass and locates important features in it, which are then used to evaluate the ambient obscurance integral accurately. We also propose an evaluation of the integral such that results within a few percent of the ray traced screen-space reference are obtained at real-time render times.

This study aimed to analyze the agreement between measurements of unloaded oxygen uptake and peak oxygen uptake based on equations proposed by Wasserman and on real measurements directly obtained with the ergospirometry system. We performed an incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), which was applied to two groups of sedentary male subjects: one apparently healthy group (HG, n=12) and the other had stable coronary artery disease (n=16). The mean age in the HG was 47±4 years and that in the coronary artery disease group (CG) was 57±8 years. Both groups performed CPET on a cycle ergometer with a ramp-type protocol at an intensity that was calculated according to the Wasserman equation. In the HG, there was no significant difference between measurements predicted by the formula and real measurements obtained in CPET in the unloaded condition. However, at peak effort, a significant difference was observed between oxygen uptake (V˙O2)peak(predicted)and V˙O2peak(real)(nonparametric Wilcoxon test). In the CG, there was a significant difference of 116.26 mL/min between the predicted values by the formula and the real values obtained in the unloaded condition. A significant difference in peak effort was found, where V˙O2peak(real)was 40% lower than V˙O2peak(predicted)(nonparametric Wilcoxon test). There was no agreement between the real and predicted measurements as analyzed by Lin’s coefficient or the Bland and Altman model. The Wasserman formula does not appear to be appropriate for prediction of functional capacity of volunteers. Therefore, this formula cannot precisely predict the increase in power in incremental CPET on a cycle ergometer.

Levedura de cerveja foi submetida a estudos analíticos para determinação de sua composição química e a ensaios biológicos em ratos para determinação de seu valor protéico, na forma de células íntegras e com as paredes celulares rompidas mecanicamente, através de um moinho com esferas de vidro (Dynomill). Na composição da biomassa predominam as proteínas (48,52%), os carboidratos (32,92%), minerais (8,32%), RNA (7,52%) e lípides totais (3,4%). O perfil de aminoácidos da proteína é adequado para nutrição humana, superando as recomendações da FAO/WHO/UNU de aminoácidos essenciais, sendo particularmente rica em lisina, podendo ser indicada para complementar a proteína de cereais. O valor protéico determinado através de ensaios biológicos (PER e NPUa) representou 70-80% dos valores para caseína, utilizada como referência.
Antioxidant activity of rosemary and oregano ethanol extracts in soybean oil under thermal oxidation

Four experiments were conducted to measure the antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of rosemary and oregano compared with synthetic antioxidants such as TBHQ and BHA/BHT. The antioxidant activity was determined and results differed from those of the Oven test at 63º C. Peroxide values and absorptivities at 232 nm of soybean oil under Oven test were lower in treatments with 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 mg.Kg-1 TBHQ than in treatments with 1000 mg.Kg-1 oregano extract (O), 500 mg.Kg-1 rosemary extract (R) and their mixture R+O. All the treatments were effective in controlling the thermal oxidation of oils; the natural extracts were as effective as BHA+BHT and less effective than TBHQ. The natural extracts were mixed with 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg.Kg-1 TBHQ and then added to the oil. No improvement in antioxidative properties was observed. The best antioxidant concentration could be determined from polynomial regression and quadratic equation from the experimental data.
Farinha integral de trigo germinado: 3. Características nutricionais e estabilidade ao armazenamento

O trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) é usado principalmente para alimentação humana, na forma de farinhas. A germinação pode ser útil para melhorar a qualidade protéica, bem como a de outros nutrientes do trigo, e a estabilidade das farinhas produzidas de trigo germinado é desconhecida. Assim, este trabalho investigou, em laboratório, o efeito da germinação sobre algumas características nutricionais e sobre a estabilidade ao armazenamento de farinhas integrais de trigo germinado por 48 (FITG48), 72 (FITG72) e 96 horas (FITG96). O perfil de aminoácidos das FITGs foi considerado bom, quando comparado com o da farinha controle e com o do padrão teórico da FAO para pré-escolares (2-5 anos). Somente a lisina (primeiro aminoácido limitante) e a treonina das FITGs mostraram valores mais baixos que o do citado padrão. O escore químico (em torno de 56-57) e o escore de aminoácidos corrigido pela digestibilidade protéica (em torno de 54-58) foram mais altos nas FITGs que na farinha integral controle (48 e 42, respectivamente). Com base nesses resultados, as características nutricionais das FITGs foram melhoradas pela germinação de trigo. Com relação à estabilidade ao armazenamento, o pH diminuiu e a acidez álcool-solúvel aumentou de acordo com o tempo de germinação de trigo. As FITGs foram estáveis até 4 meses de armazenamento, com exceção da FITG96, que apresentou alto nível de acidez álcool-solúvel, provavelmente devido à rancidez hidrolítica. O hexanal, uma medida da deterioração oxidativa, foi encontrado somente na farinha controle; nas FITGs não foi detectado, indicando boa estabilidade oxidativa durante 6 meses de armazenamento.
