The morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene/high-density polyethylene (PP/HDPE) blends in a wide range of compositions modified by a sequential Ziegler-Natta polymerization product (PP-PE) have been investigated. PP-PE contains multiple components such as PP, ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPC), and high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE). The effects of PP-PE on the mechanical properties and morphology of the PP/HDPE blends are the aggregative results of all its individual components. Addition of PP-PE to the blends not only improved the tensile strength of the blends, but the elongation at break increased linearly while the moduli were nearly unchanged. Morphological studies show that the adhesion between the two phases in all the blends of different compositions is enhanced and the dispersed domain sizes of the blends are reduced monotonously with the increment of the content of PP-PE. PP-PE has been demonstrated to be a more effective compatibilizer than EPC. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the tensile strength of the blends depends most on the adhesion between the two phases and the elongation at break depends most on the domain size of the dispersed component. Morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP)/high density polyethylene (HDPE) blends modified by ethylene-propylene copolymers (EPC) with residual PE crystallinity were investigated. The EPC showed different interfacial behavior in PP/HDPE blends of different compositions. A 25/75 blend of PP/HDPE (weight ratio) showed improved tensile strength and elongation at break at low EPC content (5 wt %). For the PP/HDPE = 50/50 blend, the presence of the EPC component tended to make the PP dispersed phase structure transform into a cocontinuous one, probably caused by improved viscosity matching of the two components. Both tensile strength and elongation at break were improved at EPC content of 5 wt %. For PP/HDPE 75/25 blends, the much smaller dispersed HDPE phase and significantly improved elongation at break resulted from compatibilization by EPC copolymers. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The developments of physical aging in phenolphthalein poly(aryl-ether-ketone) (PEK-C) and poly(aryl-ether-sulfone) (PES-C) with time at two aging temperatures up to 20 K below their respective glass transition temperatures (T-g = 495 and 520 K) have been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Substantial relaxation within the aging course of several hours were observed by detecting T-g decreasing during physical aging process at the two aging temperatures. The relaxation processes of both polymers are extremely nonlinear and self-retarding. The time dependencies of their enthalpies during the initial stages of annealing were approximately modeled using the Narayanaswamy-Tool model. The structure relaxation parameters obtained from this fitting were used to predict the possibility of physical aging occurring at their respective using temperatures. The static and impact fracture toughness of phenolphthalein polyether ketone (PEK-C) were studied at different temperatures. The static fracture toughness of PEK-C was evaluated via the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and the J-integral analysis. Impact fracture toughness was also analyzed using the LEFM approach. Temperature and strain rate effects on the fracture toughness were also studied. The enhancement in static fracture toughness at 70 degrees C was thought to be caused by plastic crack tip blunting. The increase in impact fracture toughness with temperature was attributed two different mechanisms, namely, the relaxation process in a relatively low temperature and thermal blunting of the crack tip at higher temperature. The temperature-dependent fracture toughness data obtained in static tests could be horizontally shifted to match roughly the data for impact tests, indicating the existence of a time-temperature equivalence relationship. The Charpy impact fracture behavior of notched specimens of phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) has been studied over a range of temperature using a JJ-20 Model instrumented impact tester. For PEK-C, there exist two temperature regions which distinguish the fracture mechanism, and the brittle fracture was preferentially governed by slip or shear bands at relatively high temperatures, but by crazes at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the ductility index (DI) shows similar peaks to the tan delta loss. (C) 1995 John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

Stress relaxation and dynamic mechanical behavior of phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) have been investigated. Using Ferry's reduction method, the master curve was obtained. From the experimental results, we found that the WLF equation is not appropriate in the lower-temperature range (T < T-g). The relaxation spectrum was calculated according to the first approximation method proposed by Schwarzl and Staverman. In addition to the alpha-transition region, a second transition zone is revealed at low temperature. This transition is probably due to a restricted motion of its main chain. A series of tensile and three-point bending studies was conducted at various temperatures and loading rates using phenolphthalein polyether ketone (PEK-C). Yield stress, Young's modulus, fracture toughness, and crack opening displacement data were obtained for various conditions. In general, both yield stress and Young's modulus increase with decreasing temperature. However, the relationships between fracture toughness, loading rate, and temperature are very complex. This behavior is due to the simultaneous intersection of viscoelasticity and localized plastic deformation. The increased yield stress is the main factor contributing to the reduction in fracture toughness and crack opening displacement. The relationship between fracture toughness and yield stress are discussed. (C) 1995 John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

The intrinsic viscosities of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(vinyl acetate) blends (PEO-PVA) have been measured in chloroform as a function of molecular weights of blend components and compositions. The interaction parameters Delta b obtained from the modified Krigbaum and Wall theory and the differences between the intrinsic viscosities of polymer mixtures and the weight-average intrinsic viscosities of the two blend components were both used to characterize the extent of miscibility of the blend mixtures. The melting behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate)-grafted nascent polyethylene reactor powder by plasma irradiation was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The grafting yield ranged hom 11 to 190%. Grafting was found to lower both melting point and heat of fusion during the first run of DSC determination. The heat of fusion was used to calculate the apparent grafting yield of the samples. There was little strain induced by plasma-irradiated grafting on the surface of the polyethylene crystals. A method to determine the covalent grafting yield in the graft copolymer systems was developed. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The fracture behavior of phenolphthalein polyether-ether ketone (PEK-C) affected by physical aging at 200 degrees C was studied by tensile experiments, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry observations. The ductile-brittle fracture transition (DBT) caused by physical aging can be considered as a competition between fracture mechanisms of crazing and shear yielding. The aging time required for the DBT is found to be around 400 h, based on the morphological studies and tensile experiments. The shear yielding component of the mechanical deformation could erase the aging effect, thus a deaging phenomenon occurs. We found that the deaging phenomenon has an intrinsic relationship with the extent of aging in the specimen and as a result of the fracture behavior. (C) 1995 John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

The thermal and mechanical properties of phenolphthalein polyethersulfone/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PES-C/PPS) blends were studied using a differential scanning calorimeter, a dynamic mechanical analyzer, and mechanical characterization. The morphologies of fracture surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The blends are multiphase systems with strong interaction between the two phases. It is of interest that, although the strength and ductility of PPS are lower than those of PES-C, the addition of PPS can improve markedly the impact strength of PES-C without changing its higher strength. The PPS can also act as a flow aid for PES-C. (C) 1995 John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

Miscibility in blends of three styrene-butadiene-styrene and one styrene-isoprene-styrene triblock copolymers containing 28%, 30%, 48%, and 14% by weight of polystyrene, respectively, with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found from the optical clarity and the glass transition temperature behavior that the blends show miscibility for each kind of triblock copolymers below a certain concentration of PVME. The concentration range to show miscibility becomes wider as the polystyrene content and molecular weight of PS segment in the triblock copolymers increase. From the FTIR results, the relative peak intensity of the 1100 cm-1 region due to COCH3 band of PVME and peak position of 698 cm-1 region due to phenyl ring are sensitive to the miscibility of SBS(SIS)/PVME blends. The results show that the miscibility in SBS(SIS)/PVME blends is greatly affected by the composition of the copolymers and the polystyrene content in the triblock copolymers. Molecular weights of polystyrene segments have also affected the miscibility of the blends. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
