We show how certain N-dimensional dynamical systems are able to exploit the full instability capabilities of their fixed points to do Hopf bifurcations and how such a behavior produces complex time evolutions based on the nonlinear combination of the oscillation modes that emerged from these bifurcations. For really different oscillation frequencies, the evolutions describe robust wave form structures, usually periodic, in which selfsimilarity with respect to both the time scale and system dimension is clearly appreciated. For closer frequencies, the evolution signals usually appear irregular but are still based on the repetition of complex wave form structures. The study is developed by considering vector fields with a scalar-valued nonlinear function of a single variable that is a linear combination of the N dynamical variables. In this case, the linear stability analysis can be used to design N-dimensional systems in which the fixed points of a saddle-node pair experience up to N21 Hopf bifurcations with preselected oscillation frequencies. The secondary processes occurring in the phase region where the variety of limit cycles appear may be rather complex and difficult to characterize, but they produce the nonlinear mixing of oscillation modes with relatively generic features

New chemical systems have been recently designed for the study of complex phenomena such as oscillatory dynamics in the temporal domain and spatiotemporal pattern formation. Systems derived from oscillators based on the chemistry of bromate are the most extensively studied, with the celebrated Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction being the most popular example. Problems such as the formation of bubbles (CO2) and solid precipitate in the course of the reaction and the occurrence of simply short-lived oscillations under batch conditions are very common and, in some cases, compromise the use of some of these systems. It is investigated in this paper the dynamic behavior of the bromate/hypophosphite/acetone/dual catalyst system, which has been sugested as an interesting alternative to circumvent those inconvenients. In this work, manganese and ferroin are employed as catalysts and the complete system (BrO3-/H2PO2-/acetone/Mn(II)-ferroin) is studied under batch conditions. Temporal symmetry breaking was studied in a reactor under agitation by means of simultaneous records of the potential changes of platinum and Ag/AgBr electrodes, both measured versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. Additionally, spatio-temporal formation of target patterns and spiral waves were obtained when the oscillating mixture was placed in a quasi two-dimensional reactor.

It is investigated in the present contribution the oscillatory co-electrodeposition of CuSn on a polycrystalline gold surface in the presence of Triton X-100 surfactant and citric acid as additive, in acidic media. The experiments were conducted under potentiostatic control and the system dynamics characterized in terms of the morphology and stability of the current oscillations. Besides modulations in the frequency and amplitude of the current oscillations, several patterned states were observed, including relaxation-like and mixed mode oscillations. The oscillations were found to be very robust and some time series presented regular motions up to about two hours.

We present in this work the influence of temperature on the dynamics of homogeneous chemical systems containing bromate and 1,4-cyclohexanedione (1,4-CHD) in acidic media. In particular, the following systems were studied: bromate/1,4-CHD/acid, bromate/1,4-CHD/ferroin/acid and bromate/1,4-CHD/trisbipyridine ruthenium/acid. Investigations were carried out by means of an electrochemical probe, at five temperatures between 5 and 45 °C. Activation energies (Ea) were estimated in different ways for the pre-oscillatory and oscillatory regimes. In any case, the Ea was found to depend on the catalyst, composition and initial concentrations. In addition, it was observed that ferroin and trisbipyridine ruthenium act as catalysts only during the transition between the induction period and oscillatory regime.

Spatiotemporal pattern formation in reaction-transport systems takes place spontaneously when the system is kept far from thermodynamic equilibrium. Targets, reaction fronts, waves, spirals, spots and stripes are some typical examples of selforganized structuring. In electrochemical systems, monitoring spatiotemporal patterns of potential in the solid/liquid interface can be done by the use of equally distributed microprobes located close to the working electrode. However, the physical size of each probe can limit the spatial resolution and alter mass transport properties. In contrast, the direct measurement of discrete electrodes does not suffer from this limitation and allows the accurate manipulation of the spatial coupling through changes in resistors connected to the electric circuit. In this paper, the development of an electrochemical setup for multichannel data acquisition with spatiotemporal resolution is described, especially to monitor low levels of currents usually observed in the electro-oxidation of small organic molecules.

Multilevel converters provide an attractive solution to bring the benefits of speed-controlled rotational movement to high-power applications. Therefore, multilevel inverters have attracted wide interest in both the academic community and in the industry for the past two decades. In this doctoral thesis, modulation methods suitable especially for series connected H-bridge multilevel inverters are discussed. A concept of duty cycle modulation is presented and its modification is proposed. These methods are compared with other well-known modulation schemes, such as space-vector pulse width modulation and carrier-based modulation schemes. The advantage of the modified duty-cycle modulation is its algorithmic simplicity. A similar mathematical formulation for the original duty cycle modulation is proposed. The modified duty cycle modulation is shown to produce well-formed phase-to-neutral voltages that have lower total harmonic distortion than the space-vector pulse width modulation and the duty cycle modulation. The space-vector-based solution and the duty cycle modulation, on the other hand, result in a better-quality line-to-line voltage and current waveform. The voltage of the DC links in the modules of the series-connected H-bridge inverter are shown to fluctuate while they are under load. The fluctuation causes inaccuracies in the voltage production, which may result in a failure of the flux estimator in the controller. An extension for upper-level modulation schemes, which changes the switching instants of the inverter so that the output voltage meets the reference voltage accurately regardless of the DC link voltages, is proposed. The method is shown to reduce the error to a very low level when a sufficient switching frequency is used. An appropriate way to organize the switching instants of the multilevel inverter is to make only one-level steps at a time. This causes restrictions on the dynamical features of the modulation schemes. The produced voltage vector cannot be rotated several tens of degrees in a single switching period without violating the above-mentioned one-level-step rule. The dynamical capabilities of multilevel inverters are analyzed in this doctoral thesis, and it is shown that the multilevel inverters are capable of operating even in dynamically demanding metal industry applications. In addition to the discussion on modulation schemes, an overvoltage in multilevel converter drives caused by cable reflection is addressed. The voltage reflection phenomenon in drives with long feeder cables causes premature insulation deterioration and also affects the commonmode voltage, which is one of the main reasons for bearing currents. Bearing currents, on the other hand, cause fluting in the bearings, which results in premature bearing failure. The reflection phenomenon is traditionally prevented by filtering, but in this thesis, a modulationbased filterless method to mitigate the overvoltage in multilevel drives is proposed. Moreover, the mitigation method can be implemented as an extension for upper-level modulation schemes. The method exploits the oscillations caused by two consecutive voltage edges so that the sum of the oscillations results in a mitigated peak of the overvoltage. The applicability of the method is verified by simulations together with experiments with a full-scale prototype.

The condensation rate has to be high in the safety pressure suppression pool systems of Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) in order to fulfill their safety function. The phenomena due to such a high direct contact condensation (DCC) rate turn out to be very challenging to be analysed either with experiments or numerical simulations. In this thesis, the suppression pool experiments carried out in the POOLEX facility of Lappeenranta University of Technology were simulated. Two different condensation modes were modelled by using the 2-phase CFD codes NEPTUNE CFD and TransAT. The DCC models applied were the typical ones to be used for separated flows in channels, and their applicability to the rapidly condensing flow in the condensation pool context had not been tested earlier. A low Reynolds number case was the first to be simulated. The POOLEX experiment STB-31 was operated near the conditions between the ’quasi-steady oscillatory interface condensation’ mode and the ’condensation within the blowdown pipe’ mode. The condensation models of Lakehal et al. and Coste & Lavi´eville predicted the condensation rate quite accurately, while the other tested ones overestimated it. It was possible to get the direct phase change solution to settle near to the measured values, but a very high resolution of calculation grid was needed. Secondly, a high Reynolds number case corresponding to the ’chugging’ mode was simulated. The POOLEX experiment STB-28 was chosen, because various standard and highspeed video samples of bubbles were recorded during it. In order to extract numerical information from the video material, a pattern recognition procedure was programmed. The bubble size distributions and the frequencies of chugging were calculated with this procedure. With the statistical data of the bubble sizes and temporal data of the bubble/jet appearance, it was possible to compare the condensation rates between the experiment and the CFD simulations. In the chugging simulations, a spherically curvilinear calculation grid at the blowdown pipe exit improved the convergence and decreased the required cell count. The compressible flow solver with complete steam-tables was beneficial for the numerical success of the simulations. The Hughes-Duffey model and, to some extent, the Coste & Lavi´eville model produced realistic chugging behavior. The initial level of the steam/water interface was an important factor to determine the initiation of the chugging. If the interface was initialized with a water level high enough inside the blowdown pipe, the vigorous penetration of a water plug into the pool created a turbulent wake which invoked the chugging that was self-sustaining. A 3D simulation with a suitable DCC model produced qualitatively very realistic shapes of the chugging bubbles and jets. The comparative FFT analysis of the bubble size data and the pool bottom pressure data gave useful information to distinguish the eigenmodes of chugging, bubbling, and pool structure oscillations.

The present study shows the development, simulation and actual implementation of a closed-loop controller based on fuzzy logic that is able to regulate and standardize the mass flow of a helical fertilizer applicator. The control algorithm was developed using MATLAB's Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. Both open and closed-loop simulations of the controller were performed in MATLAB's Simulink environment. The instantaneous deviation of the mass flow from the set point (SP), its derivative, the equipment´s translation velocity and acceleration were all used as input signals for the controller, whereas the voltage of the applicator's DC electric motor (DCEM) was driven by the controller as output signal. Calibration and validation of the rules and membership functions of the fuzzy logic were accomplished in the computer simulation phase, taking into account the system's response to SP changes. The mass flow variation coefficient, measured in experimental tests, ranged from 6.32 to 13.18%. The steady state error fell between -0.72 and 0.13g s-1 and the recorded average rise time of the system was 0.38 s. The implemented controller was able to both damp the oscillations in mass flow that are characteristic of helical fertilizer applicators, and to effectively respond to SP variations.

Tämä työ on tehty Fingrid Oyj:lle. Työn tavoitteena oli tutkia, miten reaaliaikaista PMU-mittaustietoa voidaan hyödyntää voimajärjestelmän valvonnassa. Voimajärjestelmän dynaamisia ilmiöitä ovat jännite- ja kulmastabiilius. Työssä tutkittiin voimajärjestelmän kulmastabiiliutta PSS/E-ohjelmalla simuloitujen mittaustulosten perusteella. Fouriermuunnoksen tulokset osoittavat, että huonoiten vaimeneva taajuuskomponentti on 0,3 Hz taajuus. Lisäksi tiedetään, että huonosti vaimeneva taajuuskomponentti rajoittaa siirtokapasiteettia. Voimajärjestelmän stabiiliutta voidaan esittää Wide Area Monitoring -järjestelmien (WAMS) avulla. WAMS perustuu Phasor Measurement -laitteen (PMU) reaaliaikaiseen mittaustekniikkaan. PMU -mittaustietoja on mahdollista tuoda käytönvalvontajärjestelmään erillisellä tiedonsiirtoprotokollalla. PMU-mittaustiedon hyödyntäminen käytönvalvontajärjestelmän toimintaaluenäytöllä mahdollistaa verkon tilan esittämisen reaaliajassa. Roottorin kulmastabiilius esitetään Fingridin käytönvalvontajärjestelmässä vaihekulmaerojen avulla ja työssä on esitetty, kuinka vaihekulmaeron arvolla on vaikutus tehonsiirtoon. Vaihekulmaeron arvo kuvaa vian jälkeisen tehoheilahtelun voimakkuutta. PMU-mittaustiedon esittäminen antaa operaattorille selkeämmän kuvan ylläpitää tehonsiirto turvallisella tasolla ja epästabiilin heilahtelun havainnoiminen vähentää suurhäiriön riskiä. Tulevaisuudessa siirtoverkon kehittyessä tarvitaan operaattorin käyttöön myös nopeita stabiilisuutta esittäviä työkaluja.

Transport properties of GaAs / δ – Mn / GaAs / InxGa1-xAs / GaAs structure with Mn δ – layer, which is separated from InxGa1-xAs quantum well (QW) by 3 nm thick GaAs spacer was investigated. This structure with high mobility was characterized by X-ray difractometry and reflectometry. Transport and electrical properties of the structure were measured by using Pulsed Magnetic Field System (PMFS). During investigation of the Shubnikov – de Haas and the Hall effects the main parameters of QW structure such as cyclotron mass, Fermi level, g – factor, Dingle temperature and concentration of holes were estimated. Obtained results show high quality of the prepared structure. However, anomalous Hall effect at temperatures 2.09 K, 3 K, 4.2 K is not clearly observed. Attempts to identify magnetic moment were made. For this purpose the polarity of the filed was changed to the opposite at each shot. As a result hysteresis loop was not observed in the magnetic field dependences of the anomalous Hall resistivity. This can be attributed to the imperfection of the experimental setup.

Investigation of galvanomagnetic effects in nanostructure GaAs/Mn/GaAs/In0.15Ga0.85As/ GaAs is presented. This nanostructure is classified as diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS). Temperature dependence of transverse magnetoresistivity of the sample was studied. The anomalous Hall effect was detected and subtracted from the total Hall component. Special attention was paid to the measurements of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, which exists only in the case of magnetic field aligned perpendicularly to the plane of the sample. This confirms two-dimensional character of the hole energy spectrum in the quantum well. Such important characteristics as cyclotron mass, the Fermi energy and the Dingle temperature were calculated, using experimental data of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The hole concentration and hole mobility in the quantum well also were estimated for the sample. At 4.2 K spin splitting of the maxima of transverse resistivity was observed and g-factor was calculated for that case. The values of the Dingle temperatures were obtained by two different approaches. From the comparison of these values it was concluded that the broadening of Landau levels in the investigated structure is mainly defined by the scattering of charge carriers on the defects of the crystal lattice

At the present work the bifurcational behaviour of the solutions of Rayleigh equation and corresponding spatially distributed system is being analysed. The conditions of oscillatory and monotonic loss of stability are obtained. In the case of oscillatory loss of stability, the analysis of linear spectral problem is being performed. For nonlinear problem, recurrent formulas for the general term of the asymptotic approximation of the self-oscillations are found, the stability of the periodic mode is analysed. Lyapunov-Schmidt method is being used for asymptotic approximation. The correlation between periodic solutions of ODE and PDE is being investigated. The influence of the diffusion on the frequency of self-oscillations is being analysed. Several numerical experiments are being performed in order to support theoretical findings.

In this thesis the bifurcational behavior of the solutions of Langford system is analysed. The equilibriums of the Langford system are found, and the stability of equilibriums is discussed. The conditions of loss of stability are found. The periodic solution of the system is approximated. We consider three types of boundary condition for Langford spatially distributed system: Neumann conditions, Dirichlet conditions and Neumann conditions with additional requirement of zero average. We apply the Lyapunov-Schmidt method to Langford spatially distributed system for asymptotic approximation of the periodic mode. We analyse the influence of the diffusion on the behavior of self-oscillations. As well in the present work we perform numerical experiments and compare it with the analytical results.
